You are so right about the fact that this lens produces a soft (not too sharp) diffused image, very cinematic, almost all the videos that i have seen on youtube, shot with this lens look very cinematic, almost ARRI cameras like. Picking this lens up for my a6400. Nice Video.

Great review! I just bought an 18-105mm for an incredible price of 250€ on eBay and now use it a lot with my ZV-E10. I completely agree with everything you said about the lens, but would like to emphasize one thing you only mentioned briefly: This lens has AWESOME stabilization. Its OSS is so much more effective than the OSS of the kit lens that I get even pretty stable handheld video footage at 105mm. It's even stable enough for relatively smooth walkaround footage at 18mm with OSS only. It has by far the best OSS of any lens I ever used, which really is a big deal with the ZV-E10 which doesn't have IBIS and crops in 45% for mediocre digital stabilization. For the ZV-E10, this lens is really a gamechanger, especially if you hate using a gimbal like me. I only wish it could weigh a bit less, but on the other hand I think that its weight contributes a lot to its stabilization as a heavier lens will be less affected by microjitters than the ultra lightweight kit lens.

Love this lens. Having the oss stabilization is great but the look this lens gives is why I love it! I wish it would work on my a7siii I just got but that camera won’t work with crop lenses in 4K because of the 12mp sensor
@@GeorgeFromBG actually I didn’t end up getting it haha. I went with the Tamron 17-70 f2.8 instead. There’s definitely less range but I liked the fact that the image is pretty sharp, the auto focus is relatively quick, and the f2.8 makes it a bit easier if it’s dark. I found it super helpful since I shoot mostly food videos at night and found the 2.8 is helpful when I’m too lazy to set up my lights haha
There is a big truth about the cinematic/soft rendering of this lens! Its the biggest reason i bought it 6 months ago for my a6000 and its pretty much my main lens. It reminds me the cinematic look of an IRIX Dragonfly 30mm 1.4 i had when i used DSLRs. For the build quality, no complaints! All metal, very nice looking and balances amazingly. And the constant f4, internal focusing and zooming makes this lens exceptional (actually i can't recall any other 6x zoom lens in the industry with all of those specs together). I found it at 519€ in a black Friday deal. For a Sony lens is really a bargain!!

You’re way to underrated man, this kind of content is pure gold, you gave a detailed overview of the specs while showing us a real life use and good god the images were so intense and cinematic! Also I was in Vallarta last spring break with some Canadian fellows and have a bunch of friends down there so you really got me on the location ❤

I'm re-thinking this lens now when other reviews derided it for being too soft. It seems you only evaluated it on its ability to autofocus. It is silly to deem a lens unusable just because it's focus hunting in low light--if I'm using a lens in low light I'm going to manually focus it.
Great review. I use a Sony a6400 with the 70-200 f2.8 and plan to use this lens with a Sony a6000 for close shots. I work professional basketball in Puerto Rico. I’ve been using a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 with the a6000 but the lack of stability is causing a little too much softness than I would like, so I expect this lens to do the job. Great video!!!
Awesome review. I know people hate the 16-50 kit lens, but it gives me great results, but it IS a pain to keep having to adjust aperture when zooming. Really annoying.. I also have the 55-210, which is also an awesome lens, but same issue. I also use the 35mm f1.8 OSS for low light, and that's an awesome lens overall, but I think I'm gonna suck it up and grab this lens. It seems much more convenient although... I'll probably have to buy a different gimbal. The Crane M2 works great with both the 16-50 and the 35mm, but I'm assuming this will be too big. Oh well... Whatever makes the best art wins. Thanks for such great insight. Helped a lot.
I still will use my kit lens for vlogging. It’s nice to have a 16 that’s stabilized. The 18-105 is a pretty awesome lens but it most likely won’t work on the M2 cause it’s probably too front heavy.

Thanks Paul! That’s all Mexico! Not much color grading in this video just the basic luma adjustments. This lens does have a bit of a warmer look to it though.
The zv-1 is very good for always having a camera on you. Having the active stabilization as well as a decent zoom the zv1 is great. Having the bigger camera sometimes is tough to deal with and awkward in some situations. My a6400 also doesn’t have any stabilization so a gimbal is sometimes necessary. The bigger camera and better lens choices ultimately will look better but the ease of the zv1 makes it a good choice
Great video and I’m now blaming you for my purchase of this lens :) could you please tell me what software you are using to colour grade your footage and photos? I’m going to be using this lens on my a6600 so I’m hoping the in body stabilisation plus the lens stabilisation will make a big difference compared to my sigma 16mm. I use Final Cut Pro for editing/color grading. In this video, I used standard color profile and really only adjusted my highlights and shadows and sometimes dropped my mids for contrast. On top of that the city of Puerto Vallarta just looks good on film especially at golden hour. This lens will be great on that a6600

@@thr6453 most people’s first lenses are the sigma 16mm and the Sony 18-105. I really like how the 18-105 is stabilized and has more versatility but the sigma 16 is a bit wider (better for vlogging) and is a 1.4 aperture which is better at night or low light.
Thank you for this review So as someone who is not new to vlogging I just sold my cannon power shot sx740 and I’m looking to buy something definitely more advanced. I’m thinking about grabbing the ze10 and this lens mainly because I’d like to do some videos doing try on hauls and product reviews where I’m going to need my whole body in the shot. And as clear as possible. Do you recommend this lens for videos of that nature ?
It’s a great set up but depending on how much room you have it could be a bit close at 18mm. I’d take a look at the Sony 10-18 which would definitely be wide enough for whole body shots. You can walk anywhere! love it...I have a Sony FX30 and this Sony lens 18-105mm f4...with enough light it looks great in your video...but I wonder how much better would the new sigma 18-50mm f2.8 would do? It's only 1 f stop brighter...I wish Sigma made the 18-35mm f1.8 for Sony E...! it would be massive I know but great for low light. You mentioned this lens produces softer images. Would you say it’s a noticeable difference when you are editing? In other words, do you feel you have to do more in post to get it looking sharp?
It’s not that it’s not sharp, it just has kind of a diffused look which I actually like better. It’s kinda more cinematic looking. And no, I don’t have to do anything more really in post to sharpen it.

To me it’s a very big difference. Its more stabilized, has a smoother look, better bokeh, better colors, way longer zoom. I’ve probably used my kit lens once since I bought this lens.

It’s a tough choice. The 16 is better for vlogging since it’s wider and low light from the 1.4 Aperture. But the 18-105 is way more versatile having that focal length. If you don’t have stabilization then the 18-105 is very nice to have since the lens is stabilized
Hey Kyle, Been following your tip and recommendations for ZV E10. When using the Sony 18 - 105 or Sigma 16, which tripod/ gimbal do you use? Do I need a Joby or can I get away with using the MT16? I’m concerned about the added weight. BTW I’m new to the Vlogg/Podcast world.
I’ve been using the Ulanzi mt-47 lately and I like this one better because it’s heavy duty and folds down small. When it’s extended it’s the same height as the joby 5K. I’ve been using it on my a7siii and sigma 24-70 as well with no issues. For the gimbal the crane m3 will work for both of these lenses but the weebill s will be a bit stronger for both of those lenses amzn.to/3Pmw5iC
I just bought the SonyFX30 - I am still doubting between the sigma 18-50mm 2.8f or the Sony 18-105mm 4f. I want to make documentary/cinematic/vlog style videos. Which one would you pick? Sony FX30 has IBIS but I don't know if that is sufficient or not
Both are sold lenses. The 18-105 would be a bit more versatile but not as good in low light. Antother lens to look at is the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 which also is a stabilized lens. You could also go with the sigma 24-70 which is a full frame lens, but would still be very good on that camera.
@@KyleWattsTV I think Ill go for the higher focal length, automatic zoom and build in stability for the sony. As a beginner propably easier to practise with and a better price then the Tamron.

Hi, I really want to buy the Sigma 30mm f / 1.4 but the only thing that prevents me is the lack of zoom. I just bought a camera, without a kit lens and saw a lot of people who said that starting a prime lens would limit me. My question to you is did you feel that the lack of zoom limited you that you started in photography and videoagraphy? I would love for you to answer (:
My first lenses were the sigma 16mm and 30mm. The 16 got used the most for vlogging and the 30 mostly got used for product photography. It didn’t take long for me to pick up the 18-105 and became kind of my go to lens
@@ZoharGoldMine there is sigma 18-50 2.8 lens that is super sharp and much brighter than kit and 18-105. tamron 17-70 2.8 is also great. sigma primes are sharp, bright and vivid but you are limited to either 16, 30 or 56mm . i have right now both sigma 16mm and 56mm prime (1.4), sigma 18-50 2.8, sony 18-135mm and imho, best all around lens would be sony 18-135mm for photography; for videos i'd go with sigma 16-50 2.8
It would be probably ok, usually you would want a lens that has more zoom range like a 200mm or higher. Depends I guess how far away you would need to be from your subject

@@hellohelie yes this lens is one of those all around lenses that is very versatile focal range wise. It’s not the best at dark but still usable. My kit when traveling was the a6400 with the 18-105 and the sigma 16mm (mostly for night time because it’s a 1.4 aperture so it’s very good in low light)
Hello Kyle. I have the same "pack", 6400+18-105, and when i'm shooting video, and applying some zoom, the lens struggles to focus, wich can ruin my videos. Did you have some kind of issue like this? I don't know what to do, since i love the lens and the camera...
I haven’t really had that issue. I have my focus mode set to wide and my metering set to multi. Maybe try those settings out of you have something set different
Freewell is by far the best budget VND filter amzn.to/3aneLHS And K&F concepts would be next best amzn.to/3FxRD7Z but I would spend a bit more and go freewell.
If you plan on using it in low light I’d go with the tamron. If you need more then 70mm on your zoom side go with the sony 18-105. But both lenses are great
Both are great. The Sony has more zoom and works better on a gimbal since the zoom states internal, but the tamron is a 2.8 aperture so it will do better in darker situations. Both are stabilized but I personally like the Sony lens better but that’s mostly because I like the look that it gives and I like that it works well on a gimbal. Also the power zoom works with the gimbal as well. Either one though is a solid choice for the aps-c line
Almost all my talking head shots in my studio is the sigma 16 with the a6400. If you’re moving around with it though it gets a bit shaky cause there’s no stabilization in the lens or the a6400 body

All depends on the gimbal. You would need to have one with a zoom control for it to work. The lens it self will basically balance the same at any of the focal lengths because the zoom function is inside the lens and the lens doesn’t extend out when it zooms

Yea, I’d say in the apsc line this is probably the best stabilization

That has to do with the shutter speed of the camera not syncing with the lights. Usually happens more with 120fps.

So as someone who is not new to vlogging I just sold my cannon power shot sx740 and I’m looking to buy something definitely more advanced. I’m thinking about grabbing the ze10 and this lens mainly because I’d like to do some videos doing try on hauls and product reviews where I’m going to need my whole body in the shot. And as clear as possible. Do you recommend this lens for videos of that nature ?
It’s a great set up but depending on how much room you have it could be a bit close at 18mm. I’d take a look at the Sony 10-18 which would definitely be wide enough for whole body shots. But definitely the 18-105 is a great lens for all around versatility.

You can walk anywhere! love it...I have a Sony FX30 and this Sony lens 18-105mm f4...with enough light it looks great in your video...but I wonder how much better would the new sigma 18-50mm f2.8 would do? It's only 1 f stop brighter...I wish Sigma made the 18-35mm f1.8 for Sony E...! it would be massive I know but great for low light. I have the Sigma 16mm for gimbal work and also the 30mm f1.4...maybe all i need for now-do you still use your lens in darker conditions? Nice sunsets in Puerto Vallarta!
Also check out the tamron 17-70mm f2.8 lens. I recently did a video with that lens in NYC and it was a really great lens.

You mentioned this lens produces softer images. Would you say it’s a noticeable difference when you are editing? In other words, do you feel you have to do more in post to get it looking sharp?
It’s not that it’s not sharp, it just has kind of a diffused look which I actually like better. It’s kinda more cinematic looking. And no, I don’t have to do anything more really in post to sharpen it.
Can you use the C1 button then Wheel to Zoom?
I guess if you set it up that way in the custom dial menu. Not sure how fast it will zoom doing that though
What could probably be your suggestion for the zve10 lens good and cheap for lowlight, Sir?
All of the sigma trio prime lenses are great since they are a f1.4 but if you need a zoom lens I’d check out the sigma 18-50 f2.8

Been thinking about picking up this lens for a while but just not sure it would be that big of an upgrade over my 16-50 kit lens. What are your thoughts on the 18-105 vs the 16-50 kit?

To me it’s a very big difference. Its more stabilized, has a smoother look, better bokeh, better colors, way longer zoom. I’ve probably used my kit lens once since I bought this lens.

Debating on this lens or the sigma 16!
It’s a tough choice. The 16 is better for vlogging since it’s wider and low light from the 1.4 Aperture. But the 18-105 is way more versatile having that focal length. If you don’t have stabilization then the 18-105 is very nice to have since the lens is stabilized

Been following your tip and recommendations for ZV E10. When using the Sony 18 - 105 or Sigma 16, which tripod/ gimbal do you use?
Do I need a Joby or can I get away with using the MT16? I’m concerned about the added weight. BTW I’m new to the Vlogg/Podcast world.
I’ve been using the Ulanzi mt-47 lately and I like this one better because it’s heavy duty and folds down small. When it’s extended it’s the same height as the joby 5K. I’ve been using it on my a7siii and sigma 24-70 as well with no issues. For the gimbal the crane m3 will work for both of these lenses but the weebill s will be a bit stronger for both of those lenses

I just bought the SonyFX30 - I am still doubting between the sigma 18-50mm 2.8f or the Sony 18-105mm 4f. I want to make documentary/cinematic/vlog style videos. Which one would you pick? Sony FX30 has IBIS but I don't know if that is sufficient or not
Both are sold lenses. The 18-105 would be a bit more versatile but not as good in low light. Antother lens to look at is the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 which also is a stabilized lens. You could also go with the sigma 24-70 which is a full frame lens, but would still be very good on that camera.
@@KyleWattsTV I think Ill go for the higher focal length, automatic zoom and build in stability for the sony. As a beginner propably easier to practise with and a better price then the Tamron.
Great review. I have zve10. With kit lens . Cant decide on this or the sigma 16 or sony 11 (expensive). Pretty much filming and vlogging holidays, blogs, building work etc. Have a go pro for stuff, but this looks a good all rounder. Can it be used at 18 then run in catalyst browse ok? Thx
The sigma 16mm is also one of those “gotta have” lenses for the apsc Sony cameras. It was my first lens.

Hi, I really want to buy the Sigma 30mm f / 1.4 but the only thing that prevents me is the lack of zoom. I just bought a camera, without a kit lens and saw a lot of people who said that starting a prime lens would limit me.
My question to you is did you feel that the lack of zoom limited you that you started in photography and videoagraphy?

My first lenses were the sigma 16mm and 30mm. The 16 got used the most for vlogging and the 30 mostly got used for product photography. It didn’t take long for me to pick up the 18-105 and became kind of my go to lens

I mainly want to shoot street photography, portraits and a bit of landscape.
@@ZoharGoldMine there is sigma 18-50 2.8 lens that is super sharp and much brighter than kit and 18-105. tamron 17-70 2.8 is also great. sigma primes are sharp, bright and vivid but you are limited to either 16, 30 or 56mm . i have right now both sigma 16mm and 56mm prime (1.4), sigma 18-50 2.8, sony 18-135mm and imho, best all around lens would be sony 18-135mm for photography; for videos i'd go with sigma 16-50 2.8

It would be probably ok, usually you would want a lens that has more zoom range like a 200mm or higher. Depends I guess how far away you would need to be from your subject
The stabilization looks good. Do we need a gimbal for sure or the Joby gorilla pod can be enough? (with a6600)
I wouldn’t say need. Especially since the a6600 has in body stabilization, the one I was using (a6400) doesn’t. But gimbals are nice to have

@@hellohelie yes this lens is one of those all around lenses that is very versatile focal range wise. It’s not the best at dark but still usable. My kit when traveling was the a6400 with the 18-105 and the sigma 16mm (mostly for night time because it’s a 1.4 aperture so it’s very good in low light)
Hello Kyle. I have the same "pack", 6400+18-105, and when i'm shooting video, and applying some zoom, the lens struggles to focus, wich can ruin my videos. Did you have some kind of issue like this? I don't know what to do, since i love the lens and the camera...
I haven’t really had that issue. I have my focus mode set to wide and my metering set to multi. Maybe try those settings out of you have something set different

Do you suggest this over Tamron 17-70mm? I was looking for one overall lens for a6400.
If you plan on using it in low light I’d go with the tamron. If you need more then 70mm on your zoom side go with the sony 18-105. But both lenses are great
Super confused with the 2 lens also☹️ but the range of Sony is also super good for travel right? The tamron can’t give it at 70mm
@@lengdelagua that's right. I went with Tamron 17-70 but I think Sony is also good. Tamron is better in low light comparitively. But it's bit heavy 😀

18-105 vs tamron 17-70 which one is better.
Both are great. The Sony has more zoom and works better on a gimbal since the zoom states internal, but the tamron is a 2.8 aperture so it will do better in darker situations. Both are stabilized but I personally like the Sony lens better but that’s mostly because I like the look that it gives and I like that it works well on a gimbal. Also the power zoom works with the gimbal as well. Either one though is a solid choice for the aps-c line

I would like to see if the quality is much better on sigma 16mm 1.4 than when you shoot on 18mm with this zoom except the aperture ?
Almost all my talking head shots in my studio is the sigma 16 with the a6400. If you’re moving around with it though it gets a bit shaky cause there’s no stabilization in the lens or the a6400 body

Just added the clip into my editing timeline and it upscales to 4K, but it’s still a 1080 clip

Yes. It’s the before and after using Lightroom to edit the photos

Yes. I don’t think they have a 72mm.
How well does it zoom on a gimbal? Can you control the zoom from the gimbal while recording?
All depends on the gimbal. You would need to have one with a zoom control for it to work. The lens it self will basically balance the same at any of the focal lengths because the zoom function is inside the lens and the lens doesn’t extend out when it zooms
