    I am just getting into photography and picked up a Sony a6300 for a steal and got a great deal on this lens. I'm looking forward to using it in the same way you do, pretty much a hybrid situation with phots and video. Thanks for reassuring my purchase and for explaining the details of the lens, great video.

      @@gadgetsandtech Yes I did and love it! it's a great all around lens and it stays on the A6400 I have, my son takes most of the pictures and he prefers it over the other Sony lenses we have, he can't stop saying how impressed he is with it.. I have already recommend it to a few others that have Sony cameras.

    Great video! Currently I have A6400 with the sony 16-50 kit lens, and the sony 35mm f1.8 prime. I mostly shoot video so I think this lens will be a great addition for me. Especially with the oss and constant aperture

    Very nice review! This is my only lens for my a6000. Great all around glass with constant f4, internal focusing and zooming and all metal construction at great price. I like the image quality but it has its flaws under circumstances. For example, if you are using professional level lenses or primes you gonna notice the lack of sharpness when focusing to infinity (for example in landscape shots). Initially I thought that the AF was problematic but no. At any shot below 25 meters the sharpness is amazing, it even matches my other Zeiss or GM lenses. But when you need to focus at distant subjects or infinity the sharpness falls off immediately! In my opinion if you want the best quality use this lens for portraits or car photography.

    Thanks, great review! Sony 18-105mm f4 vs Sony 16-55mm f2.8 - which lens would you recommend if you could only have one lens?

    • @gadgetsandtech
      @gadgetsandtech  4 роки тому +1

      I haven't got the Sony 16-55mm f2.8 but as far as I know it is obviously faster (f2.8) and also the image quality is better than Sony 18-105mm f4. Also the sharpness is greater which makes sense when it is much more expensive and has less zooming range. I wouldn't say no to own a Sony 16-55mm 2.8 but I already cover a lot of that range with my prime lenses, Sigma 16mm f1.4, Sigma 30mm f1.4 and Sigma 56mm f1.4 so I couldn't justify the 16-55mm f2.8 for now.
      I also find the Sony 16-55mm f2.8 a bit too expensive. Together with eg Sony a6600 it costs almost as much as a Sony a7iii with the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 for full frame.

      Thank you! I’m happy that you found it helpful! Since I made this review Sony has released the 16-55 f2.8 and Tamron has released the 17-70 f2.8 which are both interesting. The Tamron 17-70 f2.8 also has image stabilization so it’s a lens I would recommend looking into if you need a versatile zoom lens.

      The Sony 18-105 f4 is just great for video! I must mention though, that since I made this video Tamron has released the 17-70 f2.8 which seems like an excellent lens too. It can be an alternative if you need a wider aperture.

      @@gadgetsandtech I zipped right out and found the 18-105 on sale after commenting. But will keep an eye out for the Tamron if this one doesn't satisfy, or if I find myself in inclement lighting more often. So far the 18 to 105 has excelled, just walking around doing test shots. The triple threat of IBIS, OSS, and the rsc2 keeps it rocksteady at the long end. Playing with compression and bokeh from across a parking lot is way too much fun 😁

    Hello 👋🏽
    Would you recommend this lens over the sigma 16?
    I’m a comedian and I record my comedy shows and comedy skits etc...so I need a lens that’s great in low light 💡 and ultra wide.

    • @gadgetsandtech
      @gadgetsandtech  3 роки тому +1

      Spontaneously it sounds like the Sigma 16mm is best for you (if you don’t need the zoom). It’s both wider and has better low light performance. If you need to zoom you can also check out the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 or the Sony 16-55mm f2.8 which both are better in low light than the 18-105 f4. I’d say the main reason to buy the 18-105mm f4 is the wide zooming range which makes it extremely versatile, and internal focus (great for gimbal). F4 is not great in low light.

      I’m traveling right now without that lens, but I will look it up when I get back home. I haven’t noticed it, but since 18-105 has stabilization it must have moving parts inside. Does your stabilization work properly?

      @the.alexander 2 роки тому

      @@gadgetsandtech Hi! It does work. I accidentally dropped the lens and since that I noticed that movement which I don’t know if was already there or the shock caused an internal damage. However, it works fine. The movement stops it the lens is attached and I turn the camera on.

    What other lenses did you consider before buying the Sony 18-105mm f/4?

    • @gadgetsandtech
      @gadgetsandtech  4 роки тому +2

      For me personally I was comparing the Zeiss 16-70mm vs Sony 18-105mm. I went for the Sony 18-105mm because it is cheaper and has covers a wider zoom range. I know many other photographers prefer the sony 18-135mm because it's even cheaper and even longer zoom, but for me the variable maximum aperture was a dealbreaker. It's better for photography, and not quite as good for videography.
      If you have a bigger budget, I would suggest comparing the Sony 16-55mm f2.8 vs 18-105mm f4. It has better image quality and a faster aperture. It is more expensive though. Almost double the price.

      @@Amalia45 The Sony 16-55 f2.8 is faster and sharper, but also more expensive. The sony 18-105mm f4 has a wider zoom range, is more budget friendly and is also sharp so I went for the sony 18-105mm f4.

      I can use lens compensation with my combination of Sony a6000 paired with sony 18-105 f4. It's under tab 2 page 5. I can think of two reasons that can prohibit this. Firstly it only works on jpg, for RAW you can correct your files in post. Secondly the cameras firmware can be old. I have sony a6000 firmware version 3.21 and lens firmware version 0.4

    • @gadgetsandtech
      @gadgetsandtech  4 роки тому +1

      For video I actually find the power zoom better than a regular zoom. And for video I also control it with the button and not the ring, to get even more consistent zooming.
      For photography I believe you will get used to it. Do you own the Sony 16-50mm power zoom kit lens? How does the power zoom work for you on that lens? Or maybe you can go into a physical camera store and try the 18-105mm f4 first, to get an idea of how the power zoom actually feels.

    • @gadgetsandtech
      @gadgetsandtech  4 роки тому +1

      I prefer an extra stop. It will be both faster and also shorter depth of field. The downside is that the tamron 17-70 2.8 is extending while zooming so if you use a gimbal you might have to rebalance it for different focal lengths. Extending barrels will eventually suck in dust too. It boil downs to what other lenses you own. I have the sigma trio of primes to use in low light and short depth of field. Otherwise those the fast aperture of the tamron would be even more valuable too me.

    • @shuttlebadminton24
      @shuttlebadminton24 3 роки тому

      In my country, the price of tamron is double the sony. If you are not limited by the price and extending barrel then go for tamron. I wish to have tamron as I don't video and it would be a great one lens that can be carried on travelling.
