I forgot to give a final update on the var adansonii top cut that I potted, basically it didn't put out any new leaves and slowly turned to a crisp lol 🫠
I was now about to ask about this one, Oh no!! Love these types of vids tho! Thank you for making it. Sorry you didnt have more success, hopefully you’ll be able to add these back to your collection soon🤞🙏.
Omg my heart hurt when you were cutting off those Florida beauty roots and snapped off that gorgeous leaf. I saw why you loved it, it was stunning! I love these videos that span a long time with updates and such. Thank you for your realness and honesty. ❤
damaged leaves are better than no leaves for propagation ! leave them for the energy they provide and remove them once the plant has made more healthy ones (if they bother you)
Just a tip…. If it is rooted don’t pull out the roots, just do a dead head, even cut the leaves. The rooted part will immediately activate the nodes and growth will happen more successfully. I’ve done dead heads with 100% rate of growth. It’s safer and more effective
So a stick with roots but no leaves has a better chance than a stick with no roots but a leave? Just wanted to check if I understood that right since I'm not that familiar with the different methods 😅
omg fern i've always been so jealous of your collection because my plants often suddenly start going downhill and die💀 so i appreciate the realness of this upload
What a roller coaster! All of the chopping and hopeful intentions were so satisfying. I’m glad that so many of the adansonii made it at least! Those variegated plants just like to break our hearts.
Thank you for your honesty. Love your channel!!! I am love seeing your journey!!!! If you love plants, you will experience good and bad thing!!! We all do!!! Take care sweetheart!!! Give your fur babies love, lol your partner too!!
Loved this video. I was holding my breath when I saw you chopping up all your planties but you inspired me to do the same with some of my plants that were not looking too happy. You hit the Jackpot with your Obliqua runner. They did so well. Hope you have success with your other cuttings. Love your propagation videos with updates. Thank you
Hi Fern! So happy to see this update. And that your Obliqua did so well! Seeing your old apartment was sweet too 🥹 I’m sorry you lost your Flordia Beauty and Variegated Adansonii. I bet you will get another Adansonii in the near future. I’m manifesting it for you 😊💚
Maybe I missed something, but somewhere around 23:20 you were planning to put 2 florida beauty cuttings with leaves in water. What became of those? And please, leave those healthy roots on...
Omg me watching you cut the roots off the adansonii 🫣🫣🫣 they are melt monsters if they don’t have aerial roots. Every prop I’ve ever tried has always rotted but I was recently able to air layer and chop up mine with a 100% success rate!
Agreed. Every time I tried something tropical in terracotta it did not do well. Moved them out and they perked up. I love terracotta but some plants do not.
Thank you for the extra time, admin and effort for this video. It’s really great to see progress (or struggles) over time in one video. Love the honesty. 🌱
fern! id love if you could make a dedicated video talking about what products you use for plants (i heard you mentioning using a few on this one and would love to hear more about them)
My theory is if leave the leaves on rather than going straight to wet stick then the cutting can pull nutrients and energy out of the leaf to convert to new growth, and eventually that leaf will die off anyway so even if it's ugly I leave it on.
This is one of those videos where you wish you could reach into the screen to give a hug. Thank you, Fern, for doing the regular updates, explaining as you went ... I learned a lot. P.S. Did I miss what happened w/the mixed cup of water props?
I live love LOVE the Japanese variegated adansonii. I live in the same city as you and am dying to get one of my own! Can you recommend a place to buy a small plant/cutting?
@@wildfern Reverted new growth doesn't mean that it won't pop out variegation at any point. (Just ask Kaylee Ellen) :) I kept watching and saw that you had such good results with your Obliqua! Plants that tend to send runners can be so hard to get growth from, in my experience, so lucky you!
Try tree fern fibre for propping in...I have had so much success with it, Bonus is that it just drops of the roots when you are ready to plant it out...not that you need to remove it!
i’m only at the beginning of this video but I can honestly say that I I think terra cotta is great to look at…..but I don’t think our plants do well in them. I find that plants need more water/moisture than we think
for the obliqua cutting in water - is it possible it didn't do anything bc it's already used up all it's growth points? it looked like the node had already pushed 2 different spots but not sure
Nooooo 😭 promise us that you'll never cut off healthy roots again lol pinky promise!! I was so sad for you to need to start over, but also sad for those perfect roots. There is something very satisfying about propagating plants that arent doing so well though.
Perlite is the only substrate that i can root node cuttings in lol everything else will root in anything for me, but node cuttings require perlite for me.
I chopped my variegated monstera too, it had serveral plants in the pot but stil everything died 🥲 I think it had thrips but I was too lazy to treat it better, lol.
Hi Fern I just love your content and been a fan for a couple years now. Thank you for all you do 💚💚💜💜. I have one suggestion/question for your props is have you tried Fluval Stratum to propagate? I use it now and it really works very well especially with challenging cuttings that just don't seem to do anything, it works wonders and I am not going back to anything else as I am amazed how well and fast it works. Thank you Fern for all you do and I am so happy for you and Shane on buying your first home congratulations!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜
A friend gave me a good size rooted adansonii cutting, it died. I bought a small one, it died. I bought a nice size one that appeared to be in perfect health, and watched it slowly decline. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I was able to save some cuttings from the last one, and they are doing good just in water, so perhaps it’s a watering/soil issue. I also potted a cutting from the first plant in a tiny pot, and it got lost among the bigger plants on one of my tables, so it dried out completely a few times and strangely enough, it’s still alive. Not really doing much, but alive. So maybe I need to ignore the plant more, or let it dry out completely before watering again.
I'm confused. The roots were dried up, so why not just put them in water, rehydrate them, and then repot the plant? I realize that once a plant has dehydrated to the point of no return, you're in a 'dry rot' situation, but those roots didn't look totally decimated to me.
Smh this is perfect. I sold the greater part of my collection off earlier this year but kept a few cuttings of course to regrow things. And as I sit here on day 🤷🏾♀️idk what of 100°+ temps and look at their non progress, plus the ones I accidentally overwatered because of the heat…..sigh
I have to repot my philodendron and monstera that I potted together to save space and keep away from my new kitten.. problem is its been outside and growing like a beast! Could be a 2 person job 😂😂😂 Thanks for inspiring me to be brave and prop the bippenifolium 👍💚
I have the opposite problem with my adonsonii, it grows mostly green leaves with barely any white. It started by growing 4 all white leaves then changed to almost solid green leaves. Confusing...
The length of stem on either side of nodes doesn’t really matter, but it is good to have as insurance in case there is rot. The energy is in the actual node and not so much in the stem ☺️ Obliqua will run to find better growing conditions, so they are pretty sensitive to underwatering and lack of nutrients etc
I personally don't like clay pots.I think they suck the life out of house plants. I think they(clay pots) are better for flowers. It's just my opinion.

i dont understand why you cut the roots at the begining? wont that give them more chance of surviving?

I love how you tortured your adansonii. It was like, "you are going to die anyway, let me just do this first."🤣 I love you, Fern!
As much as I love a full beautiful plant, nothing compares to propagating a tiny node and growing a new baby plant 🥹
That Peru runner would have me so happy! That’s like ten new plants there! And that adansonii! I’d love to have one of those!
Why would you cut off healthy roots???
This is what I needed. I've had similar things happen to expensive plants and I felt so bad. Thanks for the honesty. 💚
omg fern i've always been so jealous of your collection because my plants often suddenly start going downhill and die💀 so i appreciate the realness of this upload
Hello 🎉
i agree, i went on vcation and left the watering to my sister 😭😭😭 did no go well. I'm still fixing them
I love that you showed us multiple updates on the prop progress in the video! It was also like a hair growing progression video too 😂

Thank you for being so raw with us fern! This single attribute will contribute to your success!

I really enjoyed this long prop update!!!! Can you tell me where you buy those clear flat-ish moss poles?
This must have taken so much work to put this video together! Worth it though... Loved to watch that
Why did you take the leaves off of the cuttings for the Florida beauty? Aren't they more likely to root with the leaf attached?
I prefer to grow my wet sticks leafless - you can do either though :)
oooh noooo! same thing happened with my Florida beauty....so we chopped and thankfully she came back..

Although then you need a taller/deeper prop box to accommodate the leaves
agreed, and with the Flo beauty she had lots of roots to work with, chopping them off I think was a mistake

Love the video with the updates included! ❤
Theater girly?? With those bent wig pins holding down the obliqua runner. 😊
I have had multiple varigated Adansonii and honestly, I have just given up with them and will admire from afar x
My variegated adansonii reverted to all green. I chopped it, grew well but only put out green
YES... Perfect start to my day! Coffee, Plant's, and Fern😊
Hello
Maybe switch from the clay pots?

Such a good vídeo! So exciting!
I spent so much money on Florida beauties and every one went solid green. I am so done on this plant. Enjoying my Florida greens.😂😊❤
they can be so frustrating 😩
Why did you remove all of the roots that were still good? 😓
to wet stick prop 💚 didn't matter anyways since all the cuttings grew reverted :(

Sorry if you had already talked about this, but do you usually boil the moss before using it?
She does reuse ♻️ everything she is able to :)
Not when it is new you can just wet it. If it has been previously used it is best to boil it before reusing it to remove any bacteria or bugs.
Apparently if you cut back to a half moon leaf you tend to get the next leaf all white. Need to cut back to a less variegated leaf
Do you have update on these florida beauty?
They all stayed reverted and wouldn’t grow. Not a happy ending lol.
The sound of you playing with the perlite ☺️
