My goodness, I've probably listened to this quintet a thousand times over but Tony Williams is absolutely devastating as a drummer.. And just when you may think he has only one style -- kinetic -- he reminds you that his skill set covers the entire dynamic range. He was just as profound with his touch on the ballads as he was on the firecrackers. What an incredible group they were and what otherworldly synergy they had.
Let's welcome Miles Davis and the Quintet...Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter...what a wonderful Thursday night, on and in and out driving cooker right from the start....
Thanks. These men, especially the less than world-famous ones, don't get nearly the respect they deserve. 95% of them never made enough money to feed their families from music alone. The Miles', Herbie's, Wayne's and Carter's of the world are rare. At least many of them are now receiving the praise they deserved then.
It maybe be considered an acquired taste but once you acquire the taste and have an understanding of what they are doing, you might never go back. Beautiful!
Forget about it. The greatest music in the history of mankind. This is the pinnacle of spontaneous human artistic achievement. And yes, Tony stands out. I'd argue he's the most prodigiously talented musician of the past 100 years.
Truly one the greatest group in modern jazz. Amazing how they can change tempos at a drop of hat and have you wondering how we got here!!!! What an amazing journey!!!!!
Jazz- at its higest form, is a musical conversation, with each artist offering arguments, discord, and compliment to the discussion. This piece, is a Ph.D dissertation. Seminal atonal work... A+.
Reading some of these comments brings me memories of my long lfe: I am 88 and I love these music masters since the middle forties! They make me feel that time never passed. Same feelings, same joy and excitment!
I believe that this performance is from later in the 60s. Wayne Shorter didn't join Miles band until 1964 and the tune is Agitation from the album "ESP" recorded in 1965. Possibly from a concert in Stockholm Oct. 31, 1967
Thanks to the people who got their butts out of a chair, produced and recorded this. And to those who share so much wonderful content on the net. There's no excuse for being ignorant these days. It's all there, and free!
I love the way these guys redefined the jazz quintet so that after 45 years, no real innovation has really happened since. Those albums, like Miles Smiles, are still amazingly fresh sounding. Herbie's comp licks at 2:00 AND 3:00 give me chills!
There is a great Columbia collection of Davis from this period (about 61 to 64) with mostly live tracks. It has the silly name, "Miles Davis Greatest Hits." Tracks include 7 Steps, All Blues, Someday My Prince, Walkin, My Funny V, ESP, Round Midnight, So What. Has Coltrane, Hancock, Carter & Williams, Shorter, et al. Really Great!
Herbies calm solo that crosses into the next tune is honestly amazing. What i really admire about these guys, is the fact the kept it going and just played music, they didnt have much small talk just played then fucked off, sick.
This is Agitation, from the LP "ESP". My favorite period of Miles is this quintet; there are 3 records as far as I know: ESP, Nefertiti, Filles de Kilimanjaro, all excellent and amazing. Herbie's record Maiden Voyage is good too. Unfortunately this video cuts out at the start of his solo...would love to see more!! (hint hint).
It's cool how such great musicians managed find each other and what they did collectively is simply epic. I wonder if we'll ever have another era like that?
I think I've made some of these Miles Quintet ytbs faves more than once. I don't care. Everytime I see/hear them, I'm so filled with awe and warmth. That line-up was some kind of magic. But it's also that they were some of the best and ballsiest of that time. They seem telepathic at times 'cause there so in the zone. I'll take 2 of what they had.
love this and anytin this group blessed - i am not a scholar of sounds but a lover thank you for posting this jewel ..my son will learn these dudes as so i will i
@TheViewFromSugarHill I totally agree. What these guys did is untouchable! Miles was going through a major evolution of jazz music. This is learning material for every musician and not material to be criticized...
The song is "Agitation", and is on the CD "E.S.P.", which was originally recorded on Columbia in January 1965. So the '63 date is almost certainly wrong - also because Shorter didn't join until '65. In his liner notes, Bill Belden sez this was the quintet's signature opener until '69. Incredible performance.
Look at those honey microphones! Look at that pianer...Neumann and Steinway are a blessing to our ears today if this is what we get to hear. Tony Williams. OMG. Is his mother in the front row?!
They deserve an introduction like in NFL games! running down the middle aisle hi-fivin and clappin and stuff. Top tenors of all time Wayne, Trane and Sonny!
This is marvellous! some comments here lend credence to the notion that, compared to what Trane & Ornette did in the '60's, what Miles accomplished with this brilliant quintet is still vastly under-appreciated...some are starting to catch on, however... thanks for this video!!!
This group was the first high-profile major label jazz ensemble to embrace some, but certainly not all, of the freer elements that had been introduced to jazz in the few years previous to this music. If one had been raised on bop and blues and rhythm changes, these open forms, free chromaticism and lick-free zones had a lot of appeal. This group did not rehearse, as they wanted their group playing to be of the moment. This aesthetic is now the dominant one is jazz. Find more of their music.MBB
Their later recordings where they stretched out a little more, are some of my faves. Dewey playin' from the heart with his harmon mute on the ballads, and "walkin' on eggshells" on the cookers. Young Tony playing post-bop drums like no one else has. Herbie cleverly layin' out with his left hand to open it up and play some unheard of lines. Ron anchoring the band with an iron fist. Wayne's tricky tunes forcing these heavies to really think about it. This band could do no wrong!
It makes me wonder what Miles told them right before they went out. Ron and Tony are just a hurricane of sound, while Herbie, Miles, and Wayne are completely chill. Very interesting combination.
Tony is drumming his balls off. Nice to see a young tony williams, also young herbie is sneaking in some herbie vibes. LOVE IT ❤️

The most lethal jazz quintet! Excellent!
Don't forget about Ron carter! He is killin on this clip
Thanks. These men, especially the less than world-famous ones, don't get nearly the respect they deserve. 95% of them never made enough money to feed their families from music alone. The Miles', Herbie's, Wayne's and Carter's of the world are rare.

It maybe be considered an acquired taste but once you acquire the taste and have an understanding of what they are doing, you might never go back. Beautiful!
This is one of my favorite lineups of ALL time. Tony Williams is 17 years old man!!!!
I love this rhythm section so much. One of the greatest, that ability to open up and loosen up but never drop the tempo.
That ride cymbal! Wow
Tony William is so good, he's drumming is insane
Jeez guys, nothing like just jumping right into it huh?!
Went from silence to mind blowing in zero seconds flat.
Sick, sick groove.
Man Tony is KILLIN'!!!!!!!! He took it to a pinnacle. Just makes U feel good to be alive!!!
Tony Williams and Herbie Hancock young as hell in this performance - love it !
the dream team..what a lineup
One of the greatest rhythm sections of all time!!
Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams very young but already with the best : THE BOSS !
Jazz- at its higest form, is a musical conversation, with each artist offering arguments, discord, and compliment to the discussion. This piece, is a Ph.D dissertation. Seminal atonal work... A+.
This is my favorite quintet of all time. Simply awseome! RIP Miles.
and performed when they were so young. this says it all. inspiring
Reading some of these comments brings me memories of my long lfe: I am 88 and I love these music masters since the middle forties! They make me feel that time never passed. Same feelings, same joy and excitment!
Man Tony Williams was 17 in '63 - lovely stuff!
This is 1967
+TheGurner1 it's not 63, i think this is 1967... at least wayne shorter wasnt apart of this group until 64
Been listening to some Brazilian all night. I had to come here to clear my palette.
I think I I now have the strength to carry on.
one of the greatest quintets in its time!!!
Great memories... Thank you for sharing this.
😂
Don't forget Tony Williams!
No sé quién es Tony Williams. Sé que está increíblemente acompañado y que suenan increible!!
Tony Williams es el batero. El mas joven del quinteto. (Tal vez en el video tenga entre 19 y 22). Un gran fuerte abrazo.

indeed. guess Miles first full concert recorded on camera is Milan 11 Oct 1964
I love the little drum set but with such a full sound with the fluctuations and crazzy ride techniques!
Thanks to the people who got their butts out of a chair, produced and recorded this. And to those who share so much wonderful content on the net. There's no excuse for being ignorant these days. It's all there, and free!
Slumped over my desk, head in my arms, staring up at Wayne like a kid delighting in a story his grandfather's telling him.
Pure Genius! In my zen while in my chillax mode! Thank you to the poster of this great piece of ART!!!!!
Real they came from another world!!!!
not human, but directed straight to the heart!!
DAMN what a combination of great players!
This cannot be fifty years ago... this is the future!!!
I love the way these guys redefined the jazz quintet so that after 45 years, no real innovation has really happened since. Those albums, like Miles Smiles, are still amazingly fresh sounding. Herbie's comp licks at 2:00 AND 3:00 give me chills!
best rhythm section i can think of.
and they were so young, my god.
miles second great quintet
the sound is really awesome!
This is awesome! They all make such a statement.
This band was on a whole other level. Just humbling.
Almost 45 years ago and it still doesn't get much better than this. So much creativity, spontaneity and interaction. Wow.
An Absolute treat !!! Thank you so very much for posting.
just loving every second of this performance.
WOW!!!!!! Big Herbie fan!
Miles, Herbie and Tony Williams :0 WOW!
David Curtis Drumming

They deserve an introduction like in NFL games! running down the middle aisle hi-fivin and clappin and stuff. Top tenors of all time Wayne, Trane and Sonny!
Oh, my! Intense and wonderful!
Que chamos tan bellos, Wayne es apenas un carajito y ya tremendo virtuoso. Gracias a todos ellos estudié en Berklee.
Greatest rhythm section ever...
This might be the best thing I've ever seen on UA-cam. And obviously, that's saying a lot. It's not enough for me to say thanks.

When it cuts to half time it makes me feel cool. haha.
Chyba jeden z najlepszych składów Davisa
ridiculously awesome!
My favorite part is when Wayne pauses at 2:40....great improvising :)
This is marvellous! some comments here lend credence to the notion that, compared to what Trane & Ornette did in the '60's, what Miles accomplished with this brilliant quintet is still vastly under-appreciated...some are starting to catch on, however...

great sound quality for being live
WoW. Thanx 4 post moresco63.

absolutely great

Uhh, it's amazing they could play such cool, free & energetic music wearing those suits...
