Gene and Buddy both said that Chick Webb was the greatest drummer. Sadly, there are no known videos of Webb and because of his many physical ailments from birth, died at a very young age. I never heard anything negative about him and he was responsible for hiring Ella Fitzgerald on her first job. When he died, he left her his orchestra to lead. If only I had a time machine to see all the greats from the greatest years of drumming.

I had the great time to listen to and go to see Rich and Krupa with my father. My father put his records on and I got to see my father and mother dance in the den.

To me it’s not so much as who can play better between these two because we all know who that is, it’s more who has more class, style, it’s a no brainer, Gene.

Krupa ATTACKS the drums…Buddy Rich SLIDES into them. Both are awesome but I liked Gene Krupa better.

Gene and Buddy were to totally different styles. Gene more laid back and stylish. Buddy like a cross between a tropical storm and a tornado.

I was a Buddy Rich fan and wannabe for many years. But sorry to admit I was more of a Gene Krupa drummer. Slow as molasses compared to Buddy!

It's funny. Gene's rhythm and joy make me want to get up and dance. He drummed from his heart. Buddy's drumming is more cerebral: technically perfect, but you're not inspired to even tap your toe. You only want to watch and say, "Wow." Gene is having fun. Buddy is clearly working. I've been a drummer for 60 years. Like John Bonham and Keith Moon, I'm a Gene Krupa fan. (Plus, he invented the drum kit!)
