Calypso is one of these characters people use to say that Ody cheated on Penelope, when in reality in the Odyssey she trapped him against his will , to the point where the first time we saw the character of Odysseus he was WEEPING everyday I absolutely hate her btw if it wasn't clear enough 😅
Well to give her some leeway, this whole lovedeal comes from a curse placed upon her that forces her to fall in love with anyone who washes up on her island. It doesnt make things right but it does explain why things happened the way it did.
If my translation of the Odyssey is correct, it seems like he did go along with it willingly once at the end, but based off of context clues it wasn't really because he wanted to, it was because he knew she wasn't going to help him any other way (because when Hermes comes down to tell her to release him, she says that she will do the bare minimum to help him, and then Odysseus compliments her a bunch, sleeps with her and gets her to give him food for the journey and give him a friendly wind) so it was 7 years of sexual assault with one instance of actual cheating where it was more about survival tactics then actually wanting to sleep with her (again I don't know if my translation is even correct on this)
You know the trauma is bad when he doesn’t give a proper title and instead titles it like an apology video. Edit: this now only makes sense if you saw the premiere title 🤣
No, in Greek mythology, the gods cannot be killed by anything even other gods or God level threats. Typhon ripped out all of Zeus’s tendons and he was fine once they put him back together afterward.
And I believe that ares is known for being generally nice to women (unless I'm wrong) and they are siblings, two sides of the same coin. It's just to sad. Ima go cry now
@@whitenobeard i just love how even in classical greek stuff they are pictured fighting 99% of the time and then a few where they're just chilling. Like the one sculpture where they're literally just having a nice walk while eating.
@@LizaaFernando I mean I guess if we’re going from when she was born from Metis, then yes she’s probably older than the other second-generation Olympians. However, I was more referring to when she emerged from Zeus’ skull as her “birth”, making her younger than Ares.
The whole thing with God Games is that it ONLY involves the gods who had something to do with the Trojan war. Each of the gods involved supported either the assailing force or Troy, with specifically Apollo and Aphrodite supporting Troy. Ares and Athena even had a bit of a showdown in the middle of that war. EDIT: Poseidon was on the side of the Greeks in the war, but I'd imagine he's not present in God Games because of his already existing intense grudge towards Odysseus at this point. Athena would be extremely unlikely to be able to sway him, all things considered. Soooo unfortunately Hades is not involved here. It would've been fun to have him present for this, but it also makes sense that he's not there. Besides, if any of the gods are constantly working, it's Hades. Guy doesn't get a break.
Something I find kinda funny is how many viewers and even Ares are like "is she dead?" when literally in the previous song Calypso says goddesses can't die lol
Zeus can revoke another God's divinity. He's done it to Apollo and Poseidon before. So while "Goddesses can't die", if Zeus wills it, Athena will no longer be a goddess, and therefore can die.
@@Frostbite08with gods though while they can die while mortal, their souls just reform. They are truly immortal, they're only mortal in the sense of having no powers and being stuck in a human form. They still come back.
Hades does not make parte of the Olympus gods. the twelve gods in Olympus até Hermes, Deméter, Dyonisius, Apollo, Artemis, Athena, Ares, Perséfone , Poseidon Efestos, Aphrodite and Zeus
Zeus: *Hades! My daughter wants to free some poor Greek bastard from his punishment, wanna join in on this and give your own qualms as to why he SHOULDN’T be released?* Hades: Zeus. The constant oncoming of souls that I get on the average already takes up 80 percent of my time, and for the past SEVERAL YEARS! IT HAS BEEN YOUR DICKING AROUND, AND POSEIDONS TANTRUMS THAT HAS EARNED ME 10 TIMES THE AVERAGE SOUL COUNT, COMING INTO MY DOMAIN, WHICH EQUALS 10 TIMES THE PAPERWORK! So no. I don’t have time to sit around, twiddle my thumbs and play your little games up there on Olympus.” Zeus: *Well you’d better slow down, you’ll work yourself to death!*
I don't think it's meant to be that literal in the musical, it's just that Calypso triggered every ounce of odysseus's PTSD so he was hearing his friends singing in his head because he was having a mental breakdown
I like how when Zeus says "untie apprehensions that were placed on that greek," he was basically admitting every hardship oddyseus faced was an intentional ploy by the gods.
Something that I see a lot of people missing all the way back in The Horse and The Infant is that Zeus explicitly states that “The gods will make (the kid) know (about Odys crimes against his family)” So even if Ody tried to raise the infant, or keep the truth from him, the gods will inform said infant, and probably enrage him like Aphrodite did to Acamas and Theseus. Even all the way back then, the gods were back Ody into corners.
god the wisdom saga has to be my absolute favorite so far As for why Zeus got pissed off at the end of God Games, my theory is that it’s partly because of how Athena approaches him. At the beginning of God Games, she approaches him with respect and reverence (“Father, God King, rarely do I ask for favors”). To which Zeus responds by answering her plea and having her fight to convince the others to release Odysseus. But then once she’s completed the entire game, she approaches Zeus with confidence and pride, no longer pleading to Zeus and instead demanding that he release Odysseus. (“I’ve played your game and won! Release him”). Athena’s pride here is why Zeus responds with a verse from thunder bringer, a song directly about pride crumbling beneath Zeus’s might. He sees her pride and demands as arrogance that cannot go unchecked (and tbh indirectly reminding Hera and the audience about his affairs by pointing out that unlike *some* people, Odysseus has been faithful probably did not help either). anyway banger saga great reactions can’t wait to be hurt again by the next saga 👍
I thought Zeus got pissed because Athena indirectly brought up Zeus’ infidelity. She reminded Hera of how broken their marriage was hence the “you dare to make me feel shame” line from Zeus. If a mortal like Odysseus can remain faithful to his wife when confronted by two Goddesses then it just shows how weak willed Zeus is in comparison.
@@jazlyn2929 it does seem like something Zeus would do, getting pissed over numerous things at the same time. It’s just funny how the most prideful God has the nerve to judge others for their pride. He’s the god of hypocrisy in all but name and title.
I feel like Zeus was pissed because the game was supposed to be rigged against Athena. Zeus is a sadistic bastard he knew where Odysseus was going. He specializes chose the gods who would either wouldn't care or have a personal vendetta against Ody. Apollo didn't care, Hephaestus didn't want to be there but he did care, it's why his argument was the most reasonable. Aphrodite, a goddess who had genuine anger against him for abandoning his mother. You get the point, the last resort was Hera, his wife, the goddess KNOWN for hating mortals and especially heroes. But Athena won, and Zeus lost, he's an sadistic egotistical maniac who just lost a game rigged in his favor. Of course he'd be pissed, even at his favorite daughter.
@@Silokkes FOR REALLL ITS SO FUNNY, i've watched over 15 reactions of the wisdom saga and relistened to the entire epic the musical playlist over 5 times while studying. I NEED MORE
27:14 Hades just wasn't involved in the Trojan war, all of the gods in God games were on the opposing side (with the exception of Hera) of Athena during the Trojan war
Yeah, the impression I got was that Zeus thought they'd still be holding far more of a grudge than they actually were. Apollo just shrugging and saying, "Yeah, okay, whatever, release him" did make me laugh, and it sort of set the tone for how little *any* of the other gods selected for the game seemed to care about this dumb challenge. Even Aphrodite didn't seem to want to bother arguing the point much.
It was less of a grudge due to the war and more of what their domains/roles actually play. It's actually baked into their verses and mythology. Apollo is light and culture(song), but he barely cares so long as Ody doesn't kill all the Sirens. So he lets him go. Hephaestus is often getting cheated on by Aphrodite even though they're married and he's the god of fire and blacksmiths, so as long as Ody is justified in choosing himself and he works to build back what he lost he's fine with releasing him. Aphrodite is goddess of love, in all forms. So her primary concern is Ody not doing enough to earn his way back after he failed once (Ody's mom jumped off a cliff in the Odyssey due to grief). So now that Ody is willing to kill his own people to get back to his home and is going to kill more to prove it then sure. Ares is a god of war and the not-so good parts of it. Diomedes (Who is just a man) stabbed him about it and lived in Troy. So all he cares about is bloodshed and Ody will certainly bring it. Hera is self explanatory. Many great heroes and gods cheat, but here, not him. Aphrodite is also the most serious out of them all. Whereas Apollo and Hephaestus just ask "why bother?" And Ares is just mocking Ody, she actively wants him to suffer and rot. She's only convinced because of the lengths Ody will go to. @@elkins4406
Yeah, it amused me when I first read the Iliad that it was basically a civil war between the gods, with humans as pawns. Hera, Athena, Hephaestus, and Hermes supported the Greeks. Poseidon, Apollo, Ares, Aphrodite, Artemis, Leto, and Xanthus supported the Trojans. Typical of Zeus, he f'ed around with both sides and wasn't faithful to either one, haha!
Something Interesting to note: God Games' Athena vs Aphrodite scene stars Teagan Earley, an artist known for writing the song series "Mother" against Janani K. Jha, whose name means "Mother" in Sanskrit
I'm literally only 15 seconds into the video but my first immediate thought is "Casper sounds way too happy and energetic for what is about to happen". I already feel sorry for you
I’m like… “Last I checked, goddesses can’t die”, but then I remember the Return of Jafar movie: “But you’d be surprised what you can live through”. So she’s probably not dead-dead, but badly injured nonetheless. Enough to make other gods doubt, despite knowing better.
Zeus is a creep, petty, childish, but not dumb. The fact that he sent Ody to a place any other Man would call Heaven is cunning! He know Calypso would never let him go becouse she longs for company. Personal Theorie: Zeus chose these Gods becouse he thought they couldnt be convinced. I dont know much about Hephastus, but Apollo, Aphrodite, Ares and Hera have all the reputation of beeing emotional, petty and vengaful. He thought they were all to stubborn to let Ody go, but Athena was smarter.
I think Hephastus' lines and grievance is so genius... No matter the version of his myth, he has been cast from Olympus, got handicapped for life and then had a not-so-good marriage (in the best interpretation) with the goddess who never really wanted him. He has been hurt immensely by his family, his cohort - that's what he can't quite forgive Odysseus for. And at last, it it Athena pointing out that he still has family who miss him and need him terribly that convinces him. Even if Hephastus can never truly forget his cohort's betrayal, he can't help but give in to this hope that at least this mortal can find love with his family.
Worth noting, Zeus did not "send" Odysseus there. He just happened to wash ashore and fell for her curse. Zeus is only involved because he's the king of the gods, he can force her to give Odysseus up. Calypso is the real jailer, she's the one who is keeping Odysseus trapped.
@@anyathepanther7977 i dont think poseidon had anything to do with that because im reading the odyssey rn and poseidon got pissed seeing ody popping up again (granted i havent finished the book yet but yeah)
1) Calypso the Goddess doesn't have a particular trait or association, but given her curse its safe to say shes the goddess of Stockholm Syndrome 2) The Danish christmas show was celebrating Caribbean Calypso. Its a style of music in the tropics associated with Island life. Calypso has spread from being just music to a culture.
The thing with Hades is that he isn’t considered an “Olympian” which is why I guess he wasn’t here but originally Jorge was gonna add him.(You should hear the clip for the instrumental it’s really good.). Other for that I think Poseidon wasn’t here for bias purposes(May be explained later). Yeah I love your reactions and analysis too keep up the good work ❤❤❤
Fun Fact: Hades was actually supposed to be in the song, and Jorge had an entire beat laid out for him (One of his shorts shows it, along with one for Hestia, Dionysus, Demeter and Artemis) but it had to be cut for time.
I kind of wish God Games had been a full saga on it's own instead of just one song. I'd have loved to have heard all the gods initially planned, and to have heard more from the ones that were included.
Oh gods, I was waiting for this! FOR YOU TO GO THROUGH THE SAME PAIN THAT JORGE PUTS US ALL THROUGH. I can tell just how much emotional damage is there just based on the title.
So in love in paradise calypso quotes “Ody get away from the ledge” Mimicking the “Ody we’re never gonna get to make it home” She also quotes “I’ll stay inside your heart” that’s from “I’ll stay in your heart” from odys mom And yep, finally “stay in my open arms”
Coming from Mortius to You Casper and seeing how broken he was(I seriously hope hes okay now) I hope this doesn't break you as bad I dont think little old me can survive two emotional journeys
Omg I didn’t notice that in Apollos verse Athena sings the melody of different beast!!!! It’s genius bc Apollo was talking about how Odysseus and his crew killed the sirens, which is what happens during that song. 😮
Calypso is the daughter of Atlas, a titan, and doesn’t have a specific purpose. She keeps Odysseus trapped on her island by enchanting him with her singing, but is eventually told to release him after Athena convinces Zeus. (I had confused mythology with Riordan’s work, so I fixed it.)
i think the curse part is from a fictional book and not the "real" mythology, someone corrected me on it a while ago. Then again, myth is seldom set in stone, so somewhere, someplace, that is probably "true".
The curse is from Percy Jackson. So if he's going purely off the odyssey then there's no curse. At the end of the day, I'm not Jorge so I can't say for certain if this version is or isn't cursed
God Games is so good, I love it. Apollo only caring about the sirens singing makes sense as he’s a god of music. Hephaestus caring about the sacrifice of Odysseus’s men makes sense since he forged a strong bond with the nymphs who raised him. He is also very loyal to both Zeus and Hera (in some versions being thrown off a cliff when Zeus and Hera were fighting as he tried to protect his mother). Aphrodite caring about motherly love makes sense since she is the Goddess of Love. She is also a mother of four children with Ares that she cares deeply about. So her being pissed off by the tragic death of Odysseus’s mom (it was by suicide btw. She let herself drown) makes sense. Ares, the God of War and Patron God of Sparta being mad about Odysseus’s men dying by Scylla makes sense. Greek military really cared about their comrades, so not only was Odysseus a coward in his eyes but he betrayed his own men (a big no-no in Greek society, especially in Sparta). And Hera, you know lol. Btw Hades isn’t involved because he isn’t a Olympic God lol. The Olympians are: Zeus, Hera, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Ares, Demeter, Poseidon, and Hestia or Dionysus. Anyways, I love you Hades singing!! That was so fun and good!!!
Mr Jalapeño needs to pay for our therapy from the amount of trauma he caused us with this saga 😭 He is a gods damn musical genius, you would have mistaken him for being Apollo in disguise
Sad fact: the creator confirmed the first hit Polites took only *injured* him but it’s the second one that landed the killing blow so if he was saved somehow then Polites probably would’ve lasted longer but everyone except Polyphemus went into the freeze response which led to Polyphemus giving the killing blow
The way I overcome the atrocities of Greek gods is by understanding them as symbolic personifications of natural phenomena. How the Greeks saw it. Calypso was a minor ocean goddess and possibly fertility goddess. Ody spent seven years on an island with Calypso. That is to say, he spent seven years surviving on the fruits of an abandoned island in the ocean, physically well, but lost from all civilization. This until "Athena" (The Wit) allowed him to escape
Someone has amazing foresight or is familiar with Ancient Greek works lol many of the Titans and sometimes Olympians were viewed as forces of nature or representations of human emotion. Calypso could’ve easily been viewed by many Greeks as a metaphor to whether paradise is enough to give up your excruciating journey to get home. ❤
I just see them as people with incredible power. It's very much in human nature to act as they do if you have the power and immortality that they do. Nobody is immune to that.
I'm sure somebody must have said in premiere chat / patreon, but Calypso said Ody talks in his sleep, and then echoes back to him all of his trauma whilst he's on the ledge (Ody, Stay inside your heart, Open arms)
Oh my god Casper since you're simping for Aphrodite, the singer that voices her Janani K. Jha has amazing solo music and she just put out a new song Gladiators that is phenomenal and also has Jorge in the videospot, you should totally check it out!
Okay so calypso says "stay in my open arms." It is my belief this was intentional on her part. In 7 years they must have had atleast one conversation about polites. So I think that was her way of getting ody away from the ledge by trying to remind him of better times somehow unaware that would actually trigger him.
Considering Odysseus says “you don’t know what I’ve gone through/sacrificed” it is entirely possible (and likely honestly) he’s never brought it up to her
I don't really remember if it was canon but i kind of remember the fact that Odysseus used to talk when he slept, so maybe she heard that while he slept or something
18:39 apparently Hades WAS in a draft version of God Games and had similar instrumentation as Ty...Tieres... The Blind Prophet but with more emphasis on the synths
I think it's interesting that "Ody" wasn't used until Eure betrayed him, and now Calypso uses it. Also, I don't think Hades gives a flip about a mortal man's life one way or the other.
Janani K. jha as Aphrodite is so absolutely brilliant casting on Jorge's part. She already writes songs inspired by mythology AND her voice is incredible for the role of the goddess of love.

Calypso is one of these characters people use to say that Ody cheated on Penelope, when in reality in the Odyssey she trapped him against his will , to the point where the first time we saw the character of Odysseus he was WEEPING everyday
I absolutely hate her btw if it wasn't clear enough 😅
Well to give her some leeway, this whole lovedeal comes from a curse placed upon her that forces her to fall in love with anyone who washes up on her island. It doesnt make things right but it does explain why things happened the way it did.
@@DevinDoingstuff she's not cursed in the odyssey!
@@DevinDoingstuffthat comes from Percy Jackson
If my translation of the Odyssey is correct, it seems like he did go along with it willingly once at the end, but based off of context clues it wasn't really because he wanted to, it was because he knew she wasn't going to help him any other way (because when Hermes comes down to tell her to release him, she says that she will do the bare minimum to help him, and then Odysseus compliments her a bunch, sleeps with her and gets her to give him food for the journey and give him a friendly wind) so it was 7 years of sexual assault with one instance of actual cheating where it was more about survival tactics then actually wanting to sleep with her (again I don't know if my translation is even correct on this)
To be fair she was raised by Atlas, and he wasn't particularly a wonderful parent.

Persephone isn't one of the 12 either, Hestia is.

Zeus: *Well you’d better slow down, you’ll work yourself to death!*
An interesting fact, Calypso's island is canonically on the verge of the Underworld, which is why I think Ody heard the screams of the dead
Something that I see a lot of people missing all the way back in The Horse and The Infant is that Zeus explicitly states that “The gods will make (the kid) know (about Odys crimes against his family)”
So even if Ody tried to raise the infant, or keep the truth from him, the gods will inform said infant, and probably enrage him like Aphrodite did to Acamas and Theseus.
Even all the way back then, the gods were back Ody into corners.
god the wisdom saga has to be my absolute favorite so far
As for why Zeus got pissed off at the end of God Games, my theory is that it’s partly because of how Athena approaches him.
@@zenithstrikerz1720 could absolutely be the case too! Might not be just one reason or another but multiple things that pissed Zeus off
@@jazlyn2929 it does seem like something Zeus would do, getting pissed over numerous things at the same time.

Athena watching this shit: …What’s her Twitter.

It is canonical fact from the Odyssey poem that Poseidon is on some festival in Ephiopia at the moment. 😄
I’m like… “Last I checked, goddesses can’t die”, but then I remember the Return of Jafar movie: “But you’d be surprised what you can live through”.
So she’s probably not dead-dead, but badly injured nonetheless. Enough to make other gods doubt, despite knowing better.
The, "WHERE IS HADES?!?!" sent me 😂
Zeus is a creep, petty, childish, but not dumb.

Yes, many judge her badly for holding Odysseus prisoner, but she herself is a prisoner, destined to remain forever alone, a rather tragic fate.
Calypso, like many, is just another tragic soul cursed by the Gods.
i think the curse part is from a fictional book and not the "real" mythology, someone corrected me on it a while ago.
@@Nisselakthat doesn’t excuse her disgusting actions tho

The pure, unbridled joy as this man screamed "LUKE HOLT!!!!" :D Was everything.
