    Changing the flush valve seal on an American Standard Champion 4 toilet. It's a very simple fix.

    Thanks for this. It helped me replace the valve in mine. Mine was doing exactly what you described at the start of the video. Seems to have fixed my problem.

    Just installed a new champion 4 and found that it was leaking into the bowl. Couldn't be the gasket since it was new. Turns out it was the little black screw connector not being seated correctly between the notches. That should be the first check if your champion 4 is refilling constantly.

    Sir, the dome needs to be placed properly with the slot and raised section on the bottom to match, if not properly matched it will not seal properly. Also the small o-ring on the section that you screwed off should be changed at the same time. It will also cause a slow leak. It should be screwed in till you hear a click which places it in the slotted lock on the top.

    Julie Gilmore down below has the smart answer on how to stop this %$^&*() American Standard Champion 4, which I am renaming the American Standard Loser 4, from refilling itself every frigging night!!! The company fails to tell anybody that if the slots are not aligned on the two green plastic parts that sandwich the washer, the seal will not hold tight. You'd think one of the nation's largest toilet makers would be proactive enough to let consumers know how to fix their crappy design.

    • @MGN01
      @MGN01 6 років тому

      Michael Pollick I can empathize with you. I am tired of this effed up design. The seals will leak every year and I’ve bought the original ones from a professional plumbing store. AND I still get the ghost leaks too; straight into the drain. They need to not name his crap American; it’s a travesty.

    I did all this and it still 'ghost' leaks. It didn't make sense as I had another identical toilet which was installed at the same time and have not had this problem. Logic said it had to be something else. When I compared the workings of the two toilets, I noticed the 'problem' toilet had a wobble in the green cap, but the toilet without the problem was firmly seated. I took it apart again and noticed that the underside of the green cap has notches, so logic said they were for some purpose. I noticed that the unit to which the cap would sit had flanges on the inside. I lined up the notches, it didn't have a wobble, put the assemble together, and.....guess what?...yep, no longer leaking. Just turning the green cap until it 'pops' did not do the trick, but lining it up correctly to make sure it is seated BEFORE tightening the green cap screw made all the difference....and saved me about $30 and lots of aggravation.

    Just flip the ring. The contour creates a memory in the gasket and if you flip it, you have a solid seal again! it happens about 2-3 years even with a new one, So just flip it when it starts. I have done this with the same gasket now twice and every time it resolves the issue.

    L:ast June I became aware of a driping problem, I at first thought it was a leak in the wall for it sounded as if it was coming from the right of the toilet. after extenisive trouble trouble shooting I shut the vaule fptr the feed of the toilet and found the driping stoped. (at last I found my problems found) but it was just the begining, after replaceing the repair kit The water in the tank was getting lower and lower. i called American Standard and they sent me a total replacement kit. Problem was not repaired, I called American Standard and they sent me a total replace value , even with a new replacement asembly. water was still getting lower and lower. In frustration I shut off water value and found water level lowered to the top of the twist cap on top of cover of replacement kit. so I tighten the screw top again , same results water was still lowering , Out of frustation I wrapped the top O ring with 2 strips of Teflon tape and snuged wing nut. (Problem Solved.) FYI if water in your tank heeps gettig lower and lower , just add some teflon tape to wing nut and see what happens. Bet it fixes the problem. Mario

    Thanks for the video. The black screw on top snaps into place and can take a bit of force to loosen. After I removed my old gasket, I noticed that mine too had developed little bubbles or blisters in a couple spots. I just lanced the bubbles with a pin (going through one side of the bubble only, and lancing from the top surface that does not mate with the gray flange), then squirted out the water in the bubbles. I cleaned all the mating surfaces with tissue paper, then reassembled making sure to match up the tabs on the top/bottom green parts. The toilet was fixed at no cost within 5 minutes of watching this video!

    I have this same toilet and it leaks. I felt underneath the seal and it has a bump, I "think" that just maybe it was installed the wrong way, because it leaks at that point because the bump is facing downward which prevents a good seal. I REVERSED the seal so the 'bump is facing UP and this solved the problem! Hope this helps someone with the same problem. Thanks for showing how to disassemble the seal unit.

    Looks pretty simple to fix. Ours started off as a slow leak and now it's insane. Water Co threatened to shut our water off because of the drought. So we just keep the water off at all times and if we absolutely have to use the toilet we turn the water back on.Any hoot I'm going to buy the seal at HomeDepot. Anyone have a preference on brand or are they pretty much all the same as far as quality goes? We bought the toilet last year so I'm pretty upset that it already has an issue. Thank you in advance! :-)

    My house has one full bathroom and one half bathroom. In March of 2011 I had two American Standard toilets installed, one in each bathroom. Both simultaneously start leaking and refilling at about the same time. I can safely say that the lifespan of the original tank seal in 4.5 years. I have wiped down the seal several time but the leaking persists. Your video has been a great help. Thanks, and happy flushing/tank refilling.

    Reversing rubber seal is good idea. Works well.
    Flapper is clam-shell design. Ribs on one half and slots on the other. When you reassemble be sure ribs fit into slots.
    Clam halves are held together by center screw plug. It makes popping sound
    about every revolution as you tighten. Try 2 or 3 sets of pops. If ghost-flushing
    starts again, tighten some more to stop leaking. Use pliers if needed.

    What do I do if my screw off broke, so I went to Lowes and bought the entire new valve. The problem is within a week or so, the water started leaking through the washer and the toilet every fills up each time it happens.
    The new valve didn't come with a "screw on top". It's all one piece. So I can't even take the tank off again and replace the washer.

  • @MattEtAl

    Like others below, I was worried about breaking the cap off when unscrewing because it was very tight and seated between two raised notches. Turn the cap counter clockwise with a bit of force and it will come off without breaking. I removed the seal, noticed, like others below, blisters in the rubber seal. I had 2 blisters. I used a small needle to poke just the surface of the blister and out squirted a bit of water. I put the rubber seal back in place, aligned the top and bottom green plastic parts, screwed the cap on, and now the toilet is no longer leaking. I'm not sure how long this will last before I either have to buy a new seal or re-pop a few blisters, but the fix was about 5 minutes lid-off to lid-on and cost me nothing. So thanks for making the video and to all those who commented as well.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  9 років тому

      Yes, that is a great point. I didn't know the warranty, but when I called about replacing some other part that I had an issue with, they didn't even ask any questions besides how long ago did you buy it. I told them it was years ago, and they said, no problem....where can we send the part.
      With that, they earned a customer for life.

    This flapper is quite difficult to pop up.
    Well this vid was posted 5 yrs ago and our toilet is older than that, I'm guessing. I was an expert res plumber until '05 and never saw something this wide. Maybe I just don't remember. I certainly never remember working on it so maybe that's a testament to how good that system actually is. Ours hasn't leaked but the handle went south and cracked off after weeks of creaking and cracking sounds.
    Eeewwww...gate valve! LOL I need to find out how to get rid of that assembly and put a much easier flushing system in place-like a regular fluid master with regular flapper and regular Douglas valve.
    Thanks for the vid!

    How do you adjust the float mechanism in the American Champion so it does not keep running and it also starts running on it's own. The part that looks like a long screw will not turn right or left to shorten the distance on the flange needed to keep the toilet from continually filling.Thank you.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  9 років тому

      Janet Nowell The long screw should turn with the aid of a screwdriver. It does turn a little hard. I know that it is very difficult for me to turn with my fingers. This is how you adjust the float and should keep it from continually filling. If the unit starts filling on its own, then that means you are loosing water somewhere. Either through the flush valve seal or possibly between the connection between the tank and bowl. I had that issue on one of mine. I mis-seated the bowl and tank. This last possibility is something that I would check last.
      To check your flush valve seal, you can tank the tank cover off and listen for water dripping. You can also check to make sure the plastic nut that holds the flush valve seal is tight. I just messed with mine the other day and when I took it apart to look at it and then put it back together, I didn't turn it past the couple clicks and it was leaking by. I took it back apart, reseated it and made sure it was tight. Stopped leaking.
      Good luck and let me know if you have any issues.

    Bubbles form in the blue gasket. Over time it slowly absorbs water into the gasket material to form these bubbles. You can get a new gasket from manufacturer for free if you still have receipt. Use sharp point if scissors to pop bubbles and seal will work temporarily until you get a new one!

    I wonder if you have the same problem changing toilet seats on my American standard. You can't hardly change the bolt for the seat on the left side, because the casting is so thick and narrow. The right side is fine, but the left can turn into a 2 day project, and severe mental distress.

    I noticed water coming out of the bottom of the refill tube. Is that a leak which could be causing the problems.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  7 років тому

      The bottom, yes. Maybe the refill tube is broke?

    Amazon sells this replacement seal for around $5 (American Standard 7301111-0070A Flush Valve Seal Kit)

  • @00govan00

    the handle won't lift the upper part of the flush valve due to a combination of suction and head pressure. It is a lemon of horseshit design by a fleet of incompetent consultants and execs.

    Seems like a good toilet but it doesn't flush properly if the lever is released like any normal toilet. How do I adjust it or is this model meant to allow the flapper to immediately drop into place...?????

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  9 років тому

      +Bruce Little Hello Bruce. It is supposed to immediately drop into place. The trapway is much larger than the older toilets and with that, all of the water that you need to flush it rushes out very quickly. With the old ones, you needed that longer time to get all of the water out of the tank.

    • @MikeColburn
      @MikeColburn 9 років тому

      +WorkshopAddict I have the same issue. I have 2 of these toilets. One flushes no problem. The other one closes too fast and not enough water gets through. So you end up with 1/2 a flush. How do you adjust it to make it stay up longer.
      I have a 12 year old you can't seem to hold the handle down for 1 second to ensure everything goes down. I'm constantly haven't to go back and REFLUSH the toilet. The other one has no issues.

      @wdelgenio 8 років тому

      +Mike Colburn Try moving the chain's attachment point to the end of the flush lever. It should allow the valve to raise up higher and thus stay up longer. This is an educated guess, but it's what I would do in that situation.

    When I unscrewed the rod, it fell down and disappeared. I have no idea where it went. Do I need to remove the tank to find it? Or did it go all the way down into the sewer?

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  6 років тому

      Hard to say. Can you flush a good amount of toilet paper without it plugging? Test to see if the stick stops a flush.

    • @markpickering5680
      @markpickering5680 6 років тому

      I haven't had any trouble with flushing. I suppose it's long gone! American Standard told me that the flush valve is broken if the rod fell, so I will have to replace it anyway.

    Had this same problem and did the exact same thing. Toilet is still leaking. I can hear a slight drip if I stand right next to the tank. Any suggestions?

    • @littlemoo52
      @littlemoo52 9 років тому

      ***** not leaking to the outside of the tank. it was set over two years ago and never had a problem. i can hear the water drip inside the toilet tank. when i jiggle the handle to pull vacuum on the flapper it seats it differently and stops the drip.

      +Papa Bear Is it leaking? Or is the water level too high and going down the over flow? I had the same issue (out of the box), I had to lower the water level just slightly and it fixed it.
