I’ve been watching an anime called Tomo Is a Girl, and one of the protagonist’s best friends is Carol Olsten who embodies this trope. She also embodies a cloud cuckoolander. Oh! And her English and Japanese voice actor is the same person! Fun Fact!
@@SpectreBagels The spoiled sweet part or the cloud cuckoolander part? Because I could believe that the second is a facade (I’m only on episode 6) but she lives in a mansion and has more servants than she can keep track of but is still super nice and doesn’t try to rub it in. If rich but nice isn’t spoiled sweet I’m not sure what is.
@@jumpingspiderjesusfreak6219 Well kinda both? Except the sweet part. She isn't really spoiled but she isnt really an airhead or at least not to the degree she tends to come off as. Also being rich doesn't equate to being spoiled
I honestly like Charlotte's character mainly because of her genuine friendship with Tiana. She may be a spoiled rich girl who is a bit self-centered, but Charlotte still was friends with Tiana since they were kids. Charlotte even gave up her chance to marry a prince just for Tiana to be happy. Charlotte and Tiana's relationship is definitely one of the highlights of the film for me.
@@andreabanuelosavila2317 People who insist the La Bouffs had to have done more often ignore the historical context; they did more than most would even think of doing, and it's pretty clear they hold Tianna in high esteem. Also, people seem to be ignorant of the whole ethic that both Tianna aspires to (and which is what consistently set her back multiple times, and what others keep telling her to let go of) and which the La Bouffs circumnavigate by working within its doctrinal idiosyncracies, which is why they buy from her and hire her for the night (and clearly suggesting she got pretty plenty of money for it).
@@andreabanuelosavila2317 Fun fact actually because this takes place in New Orleans during the 1920’s, it was mostly populated by people of color so it was difficult to hold onto the racist ideals (not saying it still didn’t happen nor does that make the history of it any less sad) but I was very happy as a historian to see that they picked New Orleans ❤
I'm glad they didn't make her the stereotypical antagonist because Charlotte is great and I'm glad she exists. She's honestly my favorite character from the movie
The dress Charlotte gives Tiana is completely different from the style and color she always wears, so she probably bought it specifically for Tiana to give her as a gift at some point, she is also happy when Tiana receives the payment and says that now she will have her own restaurant, and of course, she helped Tiana at the ball without hesitation, someone else could have been afraid of getting dirty but Lottie didn't care.
I really hope the show sheds light on the blue dress. She has Eudora make her practically everything (at least when she was a child), so imagine if she made it and Charlotte came up with the design.
I genuinely thought Charlotte was a refreshing take given that she wasn’t a horrible person to Tianna- I actually had the thought that Charlotte and her dad might have even possibly offered to help her give her money to help with some of the dream of owning a restaurant: but of course, Tianna wanted to earn that money HERSELF, hence why Charlotte set it up as a “ok, you don’t want a gift, you can have it as a JOB.”
That’s what I was thinking. I could definitely see Charlotte and her dad trying to help pay for or even buy the restaurant for her but as you said Tiana would want to earn the money through working for it.
@@battybuddy she is an amazing friend. You can truely see that all she wanted for Tiana was to be happy. I also love seeing girly characters actually be portrayed as good people. I have always been girly and growing up and seeing girly girls portrayed as horrible people made me want to hide that part of me and characters like Charlotte are so important to see in media where girls who are into traditionally feminine things or are girly girls as a bad thing. Also Tiana and her relationship feels real as they feel more like sisters.
@@GamerMage2k-kl4iq honestly, I’m GLAD Charlotte wasn’t the typical “girl who acts nice but is secretly petty”. At her worst she’s just out of touch on a goofy level.
Why are there so many spoiled rich blonde girls in media? Charlotte is a breath of fresh air. For one thing her sheer energy and giddiness is almost infectious. And it’s so wholesome the kind of friendship she has with Tiana. She doesn’t discriminate against her despite the time period she’s in, she’s still a spoiled rich kid but she waves her money around in such nice ways like offering to pay for Tiana’s restaurant.
Cultural bias. Blonde for centuries was associated both with youth and innocence, but also with promiscuity. Traditionally, Eve is portrayed as blonde, Mary is portrayed as brunette. Over time this evolved into the "dumb blonde" stereotype, as well as the stereotype of blondes being superficial. There's a really great analysis of Sharpey from High School Musical that goes deeper into it.
I love that Charlotte's real goal wasn't to marry a prince but it was simply to be a princess. She would be overjoyed if she was bestowed that title. She's a really supportive friend. I love her being up in the clouds contrasting with Tiana's grounded perspective. She's fun to watch.
Charlotte is genuinely one of the nicest people. Watching the Princess and the Frog as a child, I didn't pick up on the fact that those men didn't sell her that building because of her race and her gender, I just thought they were being jerks. The movie was set in the 1920's and unfortunately, racism was a pretty big thing. So the fact that Charlotte (And her father) looked past that and befriended Tiana and treated her like a person, compared to other people who didn't, is really wonderful. It shows not everyone was a terrible person back then (Which they weren't, it was just unfortunate a majority were). The fact that she also left the prince to go and help Tiana was also sweet, showing she cared more about her friend than dancing with a prince. Also, not everyone likes accepting large amounts of money as a gift; so the fact Charlotte didn't give her a hand out and said "Hey, why don't you work at my party tonight and I'll pay you," was a really wonderful thing as well. I genuinely adored their friendship throughout the movie. On a side not, I REALLY hope Disney don't race swap her in the live action (Because her race is really important in this) or make her an antagonist
@@brianaschmidt910 What with the state of the movies they're producing now, I just have a pretty strong hunch they're going to make her either an antagonist or race swap her. I genuinely hope that the movie doesn't do that.
They wouldn't race-swap Charlotte but I can see them making her extra-cringe or even an antagonist. Likely they will have Tianna rolling her eyes or giving her bitter comments. Which is yikes. And flies in the face of the spirit of the original movie. The beauty of their friendship is that they were real and good to oneanother in the midst of a world of racism, to see that worldly racism injected into that friendship would be heartbreaking.
@@dannybonsai7102 I can totally see that happening because they have a record of making nice characters assholes. If they do that it'll be spitting in the face of the relationship. Charlotte gave up on her dream of marrying a prince so Tiana could be happy. If they change that in the live action I'll be so mad
The bankers were definitely jerks, and most likely discriminatory. However if you look at the situation from a financial/economical perspective, as you would expect a banker to do, then their refusing the sale actually makes a lot of sense. See Tiana wants to open a high class restaurant, this was explained to the bankers who said it was beyond her ability. while they said it in a rude way, the reality is without prince naveen and charlotte the bankers are right. Tiana saved every penny just to buy the building, the renovations would have had to have been paid for almost entirely by naveen's parents and charlotte as it would have costed over 10 times what the building it self cost. but even not considering all of that, only about 5% of restaurants make it past the first year as they actually have to operate at a loss for that time period. and a high class restaurant lives off its connections. contracts with big name chefs and top of the line food providers, wine companies, and entertainment like very well known performers, all requiring MASSIVE down payments. as well having the reputation and publicity of being known as a high society hang out, Tana's cooking could be the best in the world and it wouldnt save her from bankruptcy. all this would be information the bankers would be fully aware of, so to the bankers it was a bad investment that would not have paid off, as they had told tiana, they were willing to sell her the building until a bigger company with more guaranteed financial means made a larger offer for it. the other offer was a much better financial investment for the bank, tiana's race and gender didnt have anything to do with that.
I think one element people don’t really think about is location. People see the 1920s south and just assume racism but New Orleans has long been a city where cultures mix. Being controlled by the French and the Spanish long before becoming part of the United States and being known a safe haven for those who might be hunted elsewhere such as runaway slaves. This mixing of groups resulted in to new cultures being born in the Cajun and Creole (yes they are different) who could be considered the earliest examples of the American mixing pot in action.
There's another addition that a lot of folks forget about how racism in the US developed differently depending on the location. There's an old saying concerning American Racism: In the north, blacks could go as high as they wanted, but had to remain AWAY, while in the South blacks could be as close, but couldn't go as high as they wanted. So, with that context in mind, Tiana and Charlotte being childhood friends is perfectly normal in many respects, the child of hired help playing and keeping an eye on the employer's child and even being friends wouldn't have raised many eyebrows. You also see this aspect in how the realtors refused to sell Tiana the property she wanted because of what she was, they were preventing a black woman from getting "uppity" by owning her own prominent business. That's the actual foreword thinking of the LaBuffs, that they were willing to help a black woman open her own prominent business.
@@peregry Hell, they already have, Tianna's mother is Charlotte's Dressmaker. And seeing how gracious Eli is with his wealth, he probably offered to pay her double what she would normally make.
@@erkko8027 You learn this so much differently, just scrolling through the comments and finding some fun facts that could be a very interesting thing to now. You learn something without expecting it, without looking for it, I think that way you're more likely to remember these things :0.
@@peregryThis. People forget that unmarried woman needed to be chaperoned as well. Tiana, with her father having died with a medal in war, and her mother being a high skilled Streamstress (which was a highly respected profession for woman of all classes), she would have been seen as an appropriate companion. There would still be a pretty big class divided, and some places she wouldn’t be allowed to go to.
There’s a lot of antagonistic female characters in Disney princess movies historically. When there isn’t a female villain, the main character has no female friends (Belle, Mulan, Jasmine) or the female friend character is mostly non existent (Pocahontas). So I’m glad Lottie was not only made a friend but also included more in the story. The movie clearly showed that Lottie cares for Tiana.
Most females are part of the hierarchy pyramid, outside the pyramid are the various shades of outskirters. (Most if not all disney princesses are outskirters) Then the only place I belong, a no-ranker. No one not even my outskirter mother, gma nor friends I had were like me. Willing to leave the tribe, to be ourselves. Pyramid ranked females have many friends, outskirters usually have smaller friend groups than pyramiders, no-rankers have close acquaintanceships but always in some part of their minds know that when push comes to shove their aquaintances - will ALL defend the pyramid sisterhood.🤭 Criticism? Accountability? QUESTIONING them/thier actions? They are deathly allergic to that. Yall label me closest to a tomboy. Even though I am just myself. 🤷♀️
To be fair, a lot of disney movies are based on old fairytales and folklores that were told to children to teach them lessons. And back when these stories were written, the mother was the solid foundation of a family (as the father was usually gone making the money), thus the best way to upend the story and 'rock the boat' was to make the mother a villainous character. That's why so many of those stories feature an evil mother or step-mother.
@@fatcat5817 Excuse me, how old are you? Your comment phrasing and words make it sound like you're in the range to be susceptible to the 'not like other girls' phase. There is no such pyramid or hierarchy. Each girl is the same in that they are uniquely different. You're a tomboy, great! However, you shouldn't group other girls into a stereotype pyramid. It is societal norms and those opinions that perpetuate girls into those stereotypes and others those that don't fit standard stereotypes. Even you are putting a label on yourself, a tomboy.
Charlotte is only halfway spoiled. She is given everything she wants but her father teaches her to treat others with respect regardless of their Socio-Economic Status.
I like what the movie did with Charlotte. She's a total airhead, and very much a product of her time and upbringing, but at the same time, she's not mean or spiteful. She's a good friend to Tiana which, given that this is set in the 1920's, their relationship would've been considered incredibly taboo. Even when it's revealed that Tiana is the one meant to be Naveen's princess, she's not jealous or spiteful. She supports her every step of the way.
Would it really be THAAAAT taboo? It's New Orleans, it has a long history of being Spanish, French and an American territory, it has influences and populations from wildly different places for hundreds of years, it's the main mixing pot of the US. By the 1920's America still had serious racial issues, but I'd say the New Orleans they probably were more accustomed to people of different races being friends.
It was still taboo even in Louisiana in that time period, yes, though less so than other places. It was still looked down on, but not as criticized.@@Overlord99762
I feel like Lottie is a brilliant character, because she's not only such a subversion of tropes (the rich girl=mean girl trope, the dumb blonde tropes, etc.), but she's also just a good solid balance to Tiana. She's high-octane bubbly energy where Tiana is serious to the point of sometimes almost seeming dour, gung-ho and always throwing herself forward where Tiana is restrained and almost afraid to reach too far, and yet there's never a sign that this is a negative between them. It's clear that Tiana cares for her as much as Lottie does for Tiana, and that it's not a clash of personalities. Sometimes Tiana needs Lottie to tell her to go and grab what she wants with both hands, and sometimes Lottie needs Tiana to tell her to slow down and focus, but it's never in a way that sets them at odds. And I especially love the idea of a female character in a Disney movie that has that enthusiastic golden retriever energy usually reserved for kid/animal sidekicks, who isn't a rival, and might be a little airheaded, but isn't _stupid._ Lottie's _flighty,_ and sometimes her energy gets ahead of her brain, but she's not actually a dumb blonde. She's a well-rounded, quirky, silly bundle of energy, and she's the best sort of "will do anything for my bestie, with all the enthusiasm" kind of friend.
Heartily agreed. She's allowed to be a real person, not merely a stereotype. Many characters from this story have that opportunity, and it gives a great deal of life to the themes in play. These aren't just writer self-inserts having a struggle session, shouting their grievances and traumas to the world, these are interesting characters who all learn from each other and their situations. That's how stories ought to work, and in many ways, it's the last Disney movie to get that sort of thing right.
@Cardinal_claw honestly having seen the Schaff video, since I do watch him occasionally. I think he views it that way because of her being blonde and wanting to be a princess. That's all I remember as points for that in the video. I'd have to watch it again. If anything she's stereotypical in a positive way. She's more the golden retriever blonde than the petty blonde stereotype. Positive stereotypes can still be hurtful though so I'd look at it from the lense of she's good hearted but a little goofy and that's what makes her so interesting
@@Its_Asteria Oof about that I kinda messed up with my comment. I went ahead and rewatched the 2000's ranking video and Schaff said that he only felt patrionized by Charlotte and her dad, feeling like Disney thought the audience would only be invested in the storyline if there was "nice white people" present A bit of an odd take imo but I completely misheard the comment, it has been a while since I watched any of his content
She might be spoiled and rich, but she is there for her friend. Different classes, never had an impact on their friendship. That's why she's so good and a breath of fresh air. We need more of her because not everyone who is well off needs to be an intolerable spoiled brat. If anything, the comparison between the rich and poor friendship is a good message, tells you it CAN be possible. It all depends on the upbringing which makes them, not the money.
One thing I also like is how you can tell Eli isn't just buying Lottie's love, there's clearly a really good and healthy relationship going on between the two of them as father and daughter, he just happens to also be able to spoil her rotten and happily does so. Lottie is just a breath of fresh air as a companion character especially for the archetype they were using with her. They also did a good job of keeping her antics charming and funny without letting her become obnoxious. She's JUST connected to reality enough to remain endearing and as you described it, in touch with her sense of wonder.
in light of the racism discussion, It makes me adore the characters even more, Charlotte as well as Tianna, Tianna's mother Eudora and Lotties father. I always felt the movie was grounded in real-world 1920s New Orleans, and certainly not a fantasy equality world, and in that framing, it was delightful to see these characters interactions. Carlotte struck me as, maybe naive, but genuine, she didn't throw money at Tianna or give her a job out of some guilt cos she's black, the two seemed to have a real bond of friendship, and Carlottes generosity is a reflection of her love for Tianna and for life in general, as well as infrugality. But she didn't nepotise her friend either, I think if Tianna was a bad cook things would be different, Lottie adored Tiannas cooking and wanted to show it to her party guests, Tianna earned that, like how mr LaBouff adored Eudora's dresses and commissioned them for Lottie which fostered the girls' relationship, maybe LaBouff and Eudora have experiences with racism but it was like they were ignoring it all and fostering an environment of genuineness and love among their children. Just my thought. We can point out some other characters, like the realtors fixating on "background" or Facilier being cynical or even vague bitterness about the world from some of Tianna's other friends, these are all very vague so the imagination runs wild, but in contrast to these are Tianna, Lottie, and their parents just living their best life and being real with each other.
People carrying bitterness about current(or past) race tensions keep trying to project that dynamic onto these characters, it would be most unfortunate if that resentment is present in any reboots or sequels.
I love Charlotte. First time I saw the movie, I was prepared for her to be antagonistic. I expected not to like her, because of tropes and stereotypes that she could easily have exemplified. That, instead, she is a loving and supportive friend with a heart as big as Big Daddy, and that her only real flaws are being a bit self involved and clueless, was so refreshing. She is one of the many reasons that this is my favorite Disney animated fairy tale.
I pray Charlotte and Naveen aren't robbed of their positive qualities in the show. I also hope Ralphie is retconned to be older to Charlotte can live out her dream as a princess.
Oh you know they are going to RUIN Charlotte... shes white ... and her dads ritch ... Definitely gonna make them like racist or some other really bad bullshit you know they are 😅 Just look at any pretty blonde white character that’s in a predominantly black show nowadays 😢
There could be another brother who couldn’t make it to the wedding. Or there’s a neighboring nation with some princes for her. Or who knows, maybe a princess ^_^
@@Nortarachanges That could be possible--though it'd be weird not to at least mention the other brother. Ralphie's existence was all for the pun of him being a child, which I'm sure Naveen would otherwise be an only child. Well- I voiced Charlotte and I can tell you that the writers/directors were very conscious to make sure she didn’t come across as a spoiled brat. It makes me so proud to hVe created what I think is a unique Disney princess!! Thanks for your take on her!!!❤❤
Yeah... I can totally see Charllote having a ton of dresses for Tiana on her closet that Tiana is too prideful to take or think its too much, but Lottie stills buys/have it made 'just in case'.
Lottie is one of my favorite Disney characters along with Anastasia after the Cinderella sequels Lottie willingly giving up her pursuit of naveen so Tiana can be happy made me smile and how I wish I had a friend like her growing up instead of being alone most of the time in school
I think it’s really challenging to write rich characters in media in a way that a general audience will accept. Typically, we see the tropes being a character that’s just really spoiled and ignorant of the world, their lack of understanding or empathy reflecting on how they treat others. Or they take the direction of a character that is extremely isolated and lonely. Their wealth being a sort of burden of expectation, distrust, and being misunderstood by others. I like the sincerity of Charlotte’s portrayal, where she is pretty spoiled and has a tendency to be self-centered, but these are natural flaws of the life she was born into. On the flip side, she is kind, charitable, and wants the best for those she cares about, so much so that she’ll forego her personal desires to support theirs. She isn’t written in a way that makes her unpleasantly out of touch, OR in a way that gives the impression that wealth is a burden on her. Because it’s not. Her family wealth gives her a happy, healthy life, but she isn’t written in a way that makes the audience resent her for it. She spreads that same happiness to others, whether she realizes the impact or not. We often view wealthy characters with a level of resentment when they express unhappiness, because in a primarily capitalist society, we often attribute happiness to the comfort of financial stability. But everyone is allowed to feel negative emotions, and I’m sure wealth does have a number of unpleasant consequences that prevent happiness, especially being born into wealth. Being out of touch isn’t always their fault, especially for a character like Charlotte. It can result in naïveté that makes you susceptible to manipulation. When that forces you to realize you often can’t trust the intentions of those around you, it would probably cause you to develop a level of general distrust and resentment for those that do not have your same level of financial stability. Because if they covet what you have and they do not, how likely is it that that the thoughts and opinions they outwardly express to you are sincere? I imagine it’s an easy environment to develop that cold, elitism mentality. Charlotte and Tiana make a cool contrast, because Tiana’s unwavering resolve to achieve her own dreams with her own hands makes her a friend that Charlotte would never have to question, and vice versa. I mean, if you think about it, Tiana’s longtime friendship could very well be the reason that Charlotte is as well-adjusted as she is.
Very true. A very wealthy person who expresses dissatisfaction with their life or unhappiness with their lot or circumstance of birth is quickly torn apart by the media and the public and I feel sorry for them.
There's definitely an ugly undercurrent of hate towards the rich/successful/smart in a lot of Hollywood writing. Lottie was allowed to be a real sort of person instead of a cliche to hate, and the story benefited greatly from that.
@@ProjectKhopeshI’ve seen it happen in real life too, where people who are viewed as successful cannot express dissatisfaction without being seen as ungrateful. Everyone should feel their feels.
@@noubu2794 Absolutely. If you’re familiar with the RWBY series, there is a quote they show at the beginning of the White trailer that I’ve always loved and that really stuck with me: “Everyone is entitled to their own sorrow, for the heart has no metrics or form of measure. And all of it… irreplaceable.” We are so quick to dismiss the feelings of others based on circumstance, or weigh one person’s emotional pain over another’s. The reality is that there is no way to measure an individual’s personal internal conflicts, so why attempt to compare and contrast? We feel what we feel for any number of reasons. That’s why prioritizing empathy is so important. Recognizing and trying to accept that everyone carries their own burdens and has their own hardships to face, even if we don’t see or understand them.
While Charlotte was extra and sometimes oblivious; she's sweet, kind, and willing to help Tiana. She's a true friend. Edit: I think she knows that she's wealthy, but it's not her personality.
“Spoiled sweet” is the perfect description for her! ❤ I love how she’s still high maintenance but she also wants to spoil Tiana even though Tiana prefers to earn things.
Charlotte had a lot of money but most importantly she didn't look down on her best friend she made sure that she treated her like a real friend should no matter how much money Charlotte had she gave her best friend the respect she deserves
It’s obvious that she’s loved for being a twist on the usual spoiled child cliche. With charlotte being a kind and understanding person especially with her bestie Tiana, but what I like the most about her is she’s easily one of the funniest characters to come out of Disney also, she’s so energetic and loud in the most endearing way mostly because of how her actress (Jennifer Cody) delivers her lines.
This is the type of spoiled child we love, she is spoiled but kind and loving. She never once had ill intention, and she help tiana up to her understanding.
You're absolutely right about why Lottie never just gave Tiana the money. Tiana would have been hurt by being offered what she would have seen as charity (even if Lottie would have considered it a much deserved gift). But Charlotte took her very first chance to give Tiana a job she would be amazing at /and/ overpay her so that her friend could have her dream and feel good about it.
I love that Charlotte didn’t push or force Tianna to accept any kind of money to help pay for the restaurant. And the only time we see Tianna get money from Charlotte is when she “pays” her best friend to cater her party. Charlotte knew that she would not just accept money. Not to mention. She probably commissioned the dress for Tianna to give as a gift.
I mean people keep saying this but it doesn't make sense? For one, ball gowns are something Charlotte enjoys, not Tiana, by Tiana's own admission she doesn't go out. So why buy something for a friend knowing full well this isn't their thing at all? Even her entire attitude when she was downtrodden at the ball, Tiana lost her chance at a restaurant and yet Charlotte kept insisting their dreams were finally coming true when really she was just talking about herself. And Tiana was very willing to take Charlotte's money anyway through Naveen. Like the whole premise of Naveen having to marry her so he can use her money to buy the restaurant just doesn't make sense if they really close friends like that. Like if she actually cared about Tiana's dreams she could have followed through any time before, with the dad even, as an investor that she could have been paying back through the restaurant. To be clear this isn't meant to be a bash on Charlotte, she's a great character and ultimately a good person, but I just think people are way overselling the friendship between Charlotte and Tiana.
Charlotte was a slap on the face on all the classic highschool romances who say "blonde. Rich. Pink. BAD" bc, well, being rich/spoiled doesnt make you a bad person, you can still receive and give love and empathy and respect to other people, so it made me really comfy, as a young pink-loving hyperfeminine girl, who was feeling demonized by all the mean girls type
I love how you just know Charlotte must have offered to pay for Tiana's restaurant many times over, but Tiana refuses to take the easy way out. So Lottie orders a ridiculous FIVE HUNDRED beignets so that Tiana can still get her wish, but feel like she earned it.
She is the kind of friend who is always going to be excited for you, happy for you, and willing to help. She’s a wonderful friend and she is probably the best part of the movie because she’s such a charming character.
I think tiana refusing her friends help because she thinks her and his father dreams should be founded by her sweat than a another persons gift is completely inline to her character and what happen in the story. Especially when she literally refused the antagonist making her wish real in an instant for said amulet.
Honestly, when it comes to historical implications, I think it would be fine to go at it with an honest perspective. Perhaps LaBouff family did in fact use slave labor back then and thus have all the money presently, but considering their current position, there's a likelihood that they would rather give that money back. The only reason they haven't yet is, well, that's just the current environment. Maybe they haven't considered what would they do with lower pay. Additionally, for how he treats his workers or whatnot, it's just as likely he has done a lot of investing and savings.
True, and don’t forget this movie takes place at least 35 years after slavery ended. The LaBuffs could have worked with the Underground Railroad. Plus (don’t kill me) not all slave owners were mustached twirling villains who treated their slaves with cruelty. Slavery is wrong but at the time it wasn’t seen as pure evil.

Personally, I found it to be a great middle-ground portrayal of real racism - because we usually see a black and white (no pun intended) spectrum of racism where either the characters are Klan members, using slurs, and totally irredeemable… or they’re NOT racist. Instead, Charlotte and Big Daddy are well-intentioned, friendly, and generous… but still benefit from the racist laws and segregation, and seem totally oblivious that there’s more than just their one black friend who could use extra money to get her restaurant. It’s nuanced, and people miss it because it’s never called to attention (and because it’s a side detail in a story about our main characters falling in love, trying to turn back into humans, growing as people, and avoiding the machinations of Dr Facilier, The Shadow Man)
I absolutely love Charlotte as a character! She's the ultimate example of a true friend, I mean she was definitely spoiled and had a temper but she genuinely cared about Tiana and was willing to do whatever she could to help her, Including sacrifice her own happiness just make her best friends dream come true, I mean If that isn't an act of true friendship then I don't know what is.
Charlotte is the only southern Belle who's worth shit, because she defy the nastiness that come from the creation of the idea. I just love the image of Charlotte being so openly a friend with Tiana and people being unable to give her shit for it.
I love the idea of Lottie not being racist being due to a mix of Eli own ideals and Lottie's obliviousness, I imagine that Lottie is constantly subjected to casual racism by other members of her social class and she just, doesn't understand why they are the way they are, she obviously know that it's bad, and she cut ties with those people, but she absolutely doesn't get racism, to the point that Lottie couldn't be racist even if she tried.

She's a bit of a ditzy rich girl, but as a friend she has a heart of gold (I mean that in a nice way obviously). She's a refreshing character cause they could have made her a rich and snobby villain but they didn't go that route.
OMG what you said about the dress brought me back at when my bestie didn’t wanted to go to prom cuz she couldn’t buy a dress so another friend and I (separately) got her a dress each one 😅 and in prom then she wore first my dress and then changed to the other friends dress , it reminded me of sleeping beauty fairies changing the color of Aurora's dress. All of this years and I still stand that by the dress I got her suit her better, but she looked pretty in both
I actually believe this theory but on the other hand, maybe Charlotte already bought the blue dress so she and Tiana could use it on occasions way before Prince Naveen's arrival in New Orleans? (besties needs to look fabulous and stunning on any occasions ofc)
My grandmother's family were friends with black people before and during the Great Depression BUT they were also poor people who worked alongside those black people cleaning houses and picking cotton, as well as doing other work on farms. I don't know that many wealthy white people from that time frame would have been as accepting. However, I could see Big Daddy being extra considerate toward Tiana and her mother because of her mother's abilities as a seamstress/designer. I'm a hobbyist seamstress and have dabbled in designing and constructing clothing from the ground up. It's hard work that takes a lot of skill and if you're off by just a little, you can end up with some...less than desirable results. Also factor in that New Orleans has a large population of Creole people and that could also have an effect. For anyone who doesn't know, in Louisiana, Creole people are those of French and African descent. And there were actually several wealthy Creole families in Louisiana. So it could be that Big Daddy knew some Creole folks and was thus more accepting of black people than the average white person of that time. I never really thought much of it, because for some reason it never clicked for me that it was the 20s even though that's the style of the clothing people are wearing lol
I loved Lottie from the start, she may be the spoiled blonde rich girl but she is not bad to anyone, she is like a child trapped in an adult body, waiting for her Prince Charming. And she is such a good friend to Tiana, never judging her for prefering to work hard to earn money instead of going out. She’s a great person
The whole movie is really amazing- because even the antagonist is likeable and the movie plays into stereotypes but gives them a new and refreshing twist without completly throwing the concept out the window
She’s always been one of my favorites for like side characters or whatever, she’s been shown multiple times in the movie that she’s actually the opposite of what you typically think of when it comes to rich girls, that her and her dads always been super kind to Tiana especially for the time period the movies set in, and I always thought she was kinda hot
Charlotte isn´t just a vain rich spoilled girl as she looks at first glance actually, she is a very wholesome complex character with an amazing unique charismatic personality traits and trully is a very good loyal worthy friend to Tiana so she - and her father actually too - are GOOD PERSONS regardless of the wealthiness and the apparent initial vainity looks on them. The movie was so cool about them so didn´t relied on stereotypes and easy cheap ways to present them even for secondary roles!!
From Lottie’s princess costume and flirty pose in the movie poster, I was ready for her to be the villain. At the party when Tiana’s beignet table gets wrecked, I was anticipating her flying off the handle at Tiana, kicking her while she’s down for “ruining” her perfect party. I was not ready for Lottie bringing her own romance to a screeching halt to help her friend. 🥺
I loved the fact they gave us a rich beautiful girl who was not a “mean girl” and in the end was not bitter she didn’t get the prince!! I think it’s great that a girl with tons of advantages wants to help rather then take or humiliate ( which mindset I never understood except to give a story a villain). Good for this movie for finding a villain that was not the evil queen, wicked step mother, or demented witch with a grudge against the poor beautiful hard working heroine.
The most telling moment for me was when Tiana had fallen into the food at the party. Lottie had paid her to make beignets so that Naveen would like her. And while it's never explicitly said that all of them were trashed, my expectation when she saw the mess was that she would ask "what happened to the food!?" in panic that her plan was ruined and get angry at Tiana or at least go into a fit about the food. But instead, she showed her colors by being more concerned about Tiana that her own needs in that moment, which absolutely stunned me in the best way. She is very peppy, but she calms down in a serious moment and has her priorities straight.
Because she defiesthe stereotype that rich blonde heiress have to be evil. She is a true princess at heart because she's loyal, sweet, generous, friendly, kind and, above all, selfless.
5:13 This is probably my own headcannon but since Lottie was friends with Tiana since they were kids. My headcannon with the dress (specifically the one in the clip) is that maybe Lottie bought the dress somewhere (and likely knowing Tiana’s size or something) and was gonna give it to her as a birthday present but since Tiana’s outfit got messed up by the people who she bought the restaurant from she decided to give the present early.
Lottie is an underappreciated character for sure! An obviously spoiled girl who was still raised with good values, but can still be oblivious to the big picture. Like if she had heard the realters' comment to Tiana, she might have just taken it to mean Tiana's less-than-wealthy upbringing than anything race related. Sure, she would have ripped into them for just that, but the concept of racism would have had to be explained. But really, what cements her as a genuine person is how she's willing to toss aside what could be her one chance at fulfilling her lifelong dream for the sake of two people who are truly in love. Tiana cannot ask for a better friend than that.
I think people like her is that she may be spoiled but she is not the typical spoiled person who looks down on others but rather she is just more niave... the fact that supports her friend despite their different status, especially in the era is set in is why people like her.
I think Charlotte would have given the dress as a gift to Tiana to attend either her fairy tale wedding or for her opening night of the restaurant, a subtle way to show that Lottie is thinking of her friend always even if she can come off as ditzy
I need the first draft of the script for this movie, according to one of the concept artists originally tiana was named "Maddy" and was a chamber maid, prince Naveen was named prince "Henry" and Dr Facilier was named " Dr Duvalier " and as said by armand baltazar was a failed voodoo priest who turned to the dark art of "Hoodoo" , his lair was originally underground and carnival like, and his death scene apparently consisted of him burning in the LABEOUF mansion or his lair,or turning into a frog ang getting eaten by an aligator , Duvalier was also supposed to be preformed by Morgan freeman. Prince Naveen was originally white and named Henry, I have no further information other than he was British Tiana was originally a chamber maid for Charlotte (who was insecure and spoiled but bossy) Louis apparently was an accountant who wanted to be a trumpet playing "party animal" he was also good friends with Dr Duvalier and was double crossed by him and turned him into an alligator And Ray wasn't supposed to die . And there was also gonna be a battle between mama Odie and Dr Facilier and a bunch of frogs were supposed to rain down on the battle, Originally Dr "Duvalier" lead them there to eat them.
We also see more of Tiana’s friends at the restaurant. So it’s not like they spend all of their time together, just because they’re childhood friends. Maybe we even don’t see any of Charlottes friends at the party because she mentioned her black friend would be there.
When watching this for the first time, I was afraid she was gonna turn into like one of the step sisters in Cinderella. I’m glad she didn’t and became a lovable character.
Charlotte is just adorable at times. I want to hate her bc she is spoiled but I can't. She does TRY and help her friend but Tiana wants to do this on her own and not just have it handed to her
When I saw The Princess and the Frog for the first time, without knowing anything about the plot, I thought that Charlotte would become a rival for Tiana. Instead, it was quite the opposite, so I can't help but appreciate it.
I love her character. She is absolutely spoiled, self-centered, and has little grasp on reality, but that doesn’t mean she can’t also be a generous person and a good friend
It makes perfect sense for Charlotte to have a dress that perfectly fits and compliments Tiana. The only reason she needed was that she wanted to dress up with her best friend, likely because they did that as kids. Now imagine young Tiana getting fitted for a tea party at home with a dress Big Daddy paid for. You're welcome.
Charlotte is a great character. She's a good friend when it matters, even if she's absorbed in her own little world. She's not malicious, just blinded by her own concerns. That's relatable and realistic. Great video, thank you for sharing!
Loving each other as besties, being supportive of each other, treating each other like good friends would. All that, and not need to confront every issue of the time to address some modern, inflammatory point... it's what makes this movie amazing! Kids just need to see people of all backgrounds acting like this to change the world. Make it a normal thing.
tbh i totally adore her because she talks as much as i do (except i only have that energy around people I consider really close to me) and she's really spoiled but a good friend. so i'm glad there are other people who like her as much as i do.
Ngl the first time I saw the movie I thought they'd make her the insufferable antagonist. And instead they made this lovely supportive friend and I love it 😍
She is rich, and spoiled, and self-centred. But she's really nice. She's a good person and a good friend. That's why we love her. Especially because a lot of us expected her to be the exact opposite.
Lottie even has a moment when she actually works as a great hommage reminder of a very different genre and great movie on their own, Brian De Palma´s "Carrie" adaptation on the horror novel by Stephen King right on the iconic scene when the girl unleashes her telekinetic powers agains all the school people - both teachers and students - right after a very hardcore dirty and nasty humilliating moment at her at the homecoming night party ball, which for a moment actually Lottie looks very alike when in her anxiety, her makeup runs down and well she looks a lot as Carrie back then at the middle 70s horror movie!!
I think, she's one of the best well thought out characters in Disney and I love this movie. It's so highly underrated! More Disney movies should be about healthy relationships
Who's your favorite Spoiled Sweet character?
I did like Chloe alot and I like Momo from MHA. But other than her I can't really recall too many that are that specific archetype. Not that I haven't seen them just than none come to mind that haven't been around for the past 8 years
I’ve been watching an anime called Tomo Is a Girl, and one of the protagonist’s best friends is Carol Olsten who embodies this trope. She also embodies a cloud cuckoolander. Oh! And her English and Japanese voice actor is the same person! Fun Fact!
@@jumpingspiderjesusfreak6219 Well it seems more Carol puts on a facade more than that's her actual personality. Like she plays up certain aspects
Me and my mom we’re surprised by that friendship, I mean if you consider the time period and social context the film is set on.

If Lottie does find her own love twenty bucks which was a lot back then says she pay to have her wedding at Tiana restaurant
@@simsgirlgem Oh Lottie would definitely have the wedding, or at least the reception, at Tiana's Palace.
My assumption was she'd ordered the dress for Tiana at some point to give to her for the opening of her restaurant, it just didn't go that way.
@@simsgirlgemAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH THAT'S SO FUCKING SWEET BRO 😢😢😢❤❤❤
@@CourtneyMaria2 Charlotte in the end was happy to see a fairy tale coming true, even if it wasn’t HERS.
I know right???? I wouldn't be surprised if that did at some point in time happen considering what we know about their personalities and charization!
Not just that she understands the word no and will gladly listen to her friends

Well, stella from winx club have a lot of the same as lottie, with the pkus she have no problem into date a commoner like brandon.
Agreed and I love that she will help tianna no matter what
Charlotte is genuinely one of the nicest people.
Omg they would do that wouldn't they!? 🤬
Ooh, Man i love finding these type of comments and learn about history

It is societal norms and those opinions that perpetuate girls into those stereotypes and others those that don't fit standard stereotypes. Even you are putting a label on yourself, a tomboy.
@fatcat5817 Gurl are you okay
It was still looked down on, but not as criticized.@@Overlord99762
and you can bet she threatened to put her boots up his ass if he broke her friends heart
In New Orleans? Hell Naw
These two comments here. 👍
I'm so sad we never got a TV show based on the aftermath of the movie. I dunno, have the croc go around 1920s New Orleans with the band or something.
Will never get over how Schaff Productions called Charlotte a white stereotype. I'd kill for a friend like her honestly

She's basically the definition of a golden retriever energy girl and she's supposed to be a stereotype?? Of what being a sweetheart??😂

Oof about that
I kinda messed up with my comment. I went ahead and rewatched the 2000's ranking video and Schaff said that he only felt patrionized by Charlotte and her dad, feeling like Disney thought the audience would only be invested in the storyline if there was "nice white people" present
A bit of an odd take imo but I completely misheard the comment, it has been a while since I watched any of his content
@@willieboi.Schaff is pretty left leaning, so that might have influenced that really odd opinion.
Very true and I wonder what will happen in the Disney plus series tianna

Just look at any pretty blonde white character that’s in a predominantly black show nowadays 😢
Just make Ralphie look younger but make him older you can make it a running gag or something
@@namkia205you can retcon physical appearance, but when you retcon actual dialogue, “i’m 6 and a half!” it’s too far 😂
Lottie finding a prince from another nation and helping it become an ally for Maldonia would be neat, though!
Well- I voiced Charlotte and I can tell you that the writers/directors were very conscious to make sure she didn’t come across as a spoiled brat. It makes me so proud to hVe created what I think is a unique Disney princess!! Thanks for your take on her!!!❤❤
OMG You're actually legit!! Props to your amazing voice acting mam!!! She's so lively that's she's endearing 😭👏🎉🎉🎉
You voiced an amazing character! She's one of the best!😊
Lottie is Dolly Parton to Tiana's Whitney Houston
Oh yeah, Anastasia is now a Disney princess. Forgot about that
@@luckluca8982 wasn’t talking about that Anastasia I was talking about Cinderella step sister
If you’re familiar with the RWBY series, there is a quote they show at the beginning of the White trailer that I’ve always loved and that really stuck with me:
“Everyone is entitled to their own sorrow, for the heart has no metrics or form of measure. And all of it… irreplaceable.”
We are so quick to dismiss the feelings of others based on circumstance, or weigh one person’s emotional pain over another’s.
She is the name codifier
She honestly she one of my favorite characters.
Mostly because she makes me laugh.
She gives me Dolly Parton feels. Just as sweet and southern belle 🎉
I absolutely love Charlotte! She was so crazy, Bubbly, and loud. I hope she finds her true love one day. She deserves someone special!
Charlotte is one of the best best friend characters ever 💖 She's spoiled as hell, but so sweet, and so there for Tiana.
Maybe his "bad habit" of overpaying is his subtle way of giving back, and he seems to have passed that habit on to his daughter.
@@MrSophireYES! THANK YOU! SOMEONE FINALLY SAYS IT!
also if u wanna find an interesting reference involving the ideals of different slave owners and industrialists before and during the Cival War, check out the original North and South series, with Patrick Swayze as Orie Maine
It’s nuanced, and people miss it because it’s never called to attention (and because it’s a side detail in a story about our main characters falling in love, trying to turn back into humans, growing as people, and avoiding the machinations of Dr Facilier, The Shadow Man)
@@MrSophire Sir, I'm going to need your Twitter handle to report your wrongthink.
@@hasturthekinginyellow5003 not subjected to it, but I imagine she definitely see it, which most likely make her uncomfortable because her best friend is a black woman.
@@fandemusique4693 sorry English isn't my first language, I didn't meant that Lottie was the victim of the casual racism, I meant to say that she is just there when other high society people are being casually racist.

One of my cats is named after her. I meant it to be Lottie, but Charlotte fit her personality better. The other cat is named Tiana.

Aww I love that
Oh my god that's adorable
Wealth doesn’t define who you are as an individual, your actions do. Decent Rich people exist. Terrible Rich people exist too. At the same time, both decent and terrible poor people exist as well.
She's a bit of a ditzy rich girl, but as a friend she has a heart of gold (I mean that in a nice way obviously). She's a refreshing character cause they could have made her a rich and snobby villain but they didn't go that route.
8:53 I love that scene! lol If defines the expression "It's not *what* you know, it's *who* you know."
All of this years and I still stand that by the dress I got her suit her better, but she looked pretty in both
I have a theory about the blue dress, what if it was originally got to be a present to Tiana for the grand opening of her restaurant?
Why wouldn't Charlotte want to make her best friend a princess like she wants to be too? They can be Princesses together! Best friends goals!
Nothing Lottie did was coincidence. She knows her friend well, and played a very good supporting role for Tiana.
Totally expected her to be a villain. Was very happy she was not.
5:13
This is probably my own headcannon but since Lottie was friends with Tiana since they were kids.
3:28 "I am sweating like a sinner in the church" 😂😂😂
This is probably my favorite recent Disney movie. It just feels like a classic Disney movie while being something new
I hope Charlotte gets the happily ever after she deserves.
True friendship between girls is something you rarely see in movies.
Prince Naveen was originally white and named Henry, I have no further information other than he was British
Tiana was originally a chamber maid for Charlotte (who was insecure and spoiled but bossy)
Louis apparently was an accountant who wanted to be a trumpet playing "party animal" he was also good friends with Dr Duvalier and was double crossed by him and turned him into an alligator
And Ray wasn't supposed to die .
And there was also gonna be a battle between mama Odie and Dr Facilier and a bunch of frogs were supposed to rain down on the battle,
Originally Dr "Duvalier" lead them there to eat them.
We also see more of Tiana’s friends at the restaurant. So it’s not like they spend all of their time together, just because they’re childhood friends. Maybe we even don’t see any of Charlottes friends at the party because she mentioned her black friend would be there.
She's the highlight of the movie, for me.
I want more characters like her. Maybe spoiled but a very kind or sweet character.
When watching this for the first time, I was afraid she was gonna turn into like one of the step sisters in Cinderella. I’m glad she didn’t and became a lovable character.
She was always a great part of Princess and the Frog, glad folks are speaking of it!

And I love Yuno and Lottie 💕💕💕 the best characthers
She is great such a likable character but another spoiled but sweet character I adore is Mouscedes King
She is the perfect example that you can be spoiled without being a brat.😍😍😍
I love her character. She is absolutely spoiled, self-centered, and has little grasp on reality, but that doesn’t mean she can’t also be a generous person and a good friend
She is a very cute character. She kinda reminds me of Bianca from Pokemon Black and White!
Who by the way is a walking/running disaster!!
I have been looking for a video like this for months! Finally someone who does a dive on why she's such a great character
0:56 Where my Archie Comics kins at? Absolute icon 💅🏽✨
Modern Disney would have made her the twist villain.
so true lol
Charlotte is a great character. She's a good friend when it matters, even if she's absorbed in her own little world. She's not malicious, just blinded by her own concerns. That's relatable and realistic. Great video, thank you for sharing!
For a male counterpart to the rich sweet type would be Richie Rich.
Lotte only wears pink. She pulls out a blue dress for Tiana. Lotte is an extremely sweet female. It's a breath of fresh air.
I was actually really glad they subverted our expectations with Charlotte. She ends up a sweetheart and a good friend.
Underrated movie. I like it more as time goes on.
And instead they made this lovely supportive friend and I love it 😍
Charlotte gives a lot of charm for the movie and she's my IDOL, she's an genuine caring friend and that's something i'll always love about her
Lottie is friendship goals, lottie and tiannas friendship mentioned in this made me appreciate this movie a lot more
You know that modern disney wouldve made her a twist villain for no reason
She is rich, and spoiled, and self-centred. But she's really nice. She's a good person and a good friend. That's why we love her. Especially because a lot of us expected her to be the exact opposite.
Richie Rich was(obviously) a rich character, but he was generous and charitable, so much so he was nicknamed “The poor little rich boy.”
Lottie is one of the best Disney characters along with Timothy
I absolutely love Lottie. She is nothing but a sweetheart.
