A dc treadmill motor and a variable speed controller is a nice mod and a donor treadmill can usually be found curbside or craigslist for next to nothing and gives you the versatility of cutting almost anything at any speed! I did this to all of my equipment and love it!

I've got to cut solid round and square stock for turning and some milling projects, so I need to slow 'er down quite a bit mor than this. I was hoping to see a jack-shaft setup. Buying new for all the parts for a jack-shaft setup may exceed the cost of a HF portable metal bandsaw, IDK.

Keep me honest on these calculations: Assume a typical wood cutting bandsaw moves the blade at about 2400 fpm. You want around 300 fpm or preferably a little less for metal. So, replacing a 5" pulley with a 10.25" results in a reduction of fpm to 5/10.5*2400=1170. This is still way too fast. What most guys do is introduce an intermediate jackshaft with an additional reduction of about 2.5/10. That would result in a final fpm of about 292. I believe that would be acceptable for most applications. If you don't make that change, you'll just chew-up your new blade in a relatively short time with excessive heat build up from too high of a cutting speed. And I like SAMRODIAN's idea of a few shim washers instead of a new belt.

You can tell just by looking at how fast the wheels are spinning in the video, it's way too fast...
I wonder though. As long as the steel is very thin, maybe you can still cut a fair amount even with a dull blade. Kinda like how you can cut 3/4" wood with a 3 tpi blade even when it gets super dull. It's when you go to cut something thicker that you notice how dull it is.

I mean, with a similar blade, my metal cutting saw at 450 fpm will not cut 1/8" hot rolled even half that fast. But I can also cut 1/4" steel and stainless bolts without changing the blade. I wonder if either of those things would reveal the shortcoming of cutting steel at this high of a speed.

I'm not real big on safety but I wouldn't run a band saw without the covers.

    Way too fast yet.
Need a jack shaft so that you can introduce another large pulley which will slow it down to about where it needs to be.

Why would you chance running it without the GUARD ,it's a NO NO NO

If you have got the drive belt that tight and we're talking about getting a longer belt, stop and think, go buy yourself some washers and loosen the motor and put enough washers under the motor mounting until you can get the belt on and off easily. When the belt stretches, and it will. Just remove a couple of washers from one end and it will tighten it up again.

Your comment is constructive and helpful but the “stop and think” part just makes you sound rude and kind of ruins the whole thing.

That's still much to fast for a metal cutting bandsaw. Realistically you want it to be in the 200 fpm range.

The reality is the teeth per minute is more important so you can use a skip tooth blade to dramatically reduce it as well

@@jmgraydz not the greatest solution. for most metals a 24TPI blade works best so youd have to deal with rpm reduction by at least 4x

I was expecting to see some blood ad a trip to hospital or morgue after seeing the cover not being put on.

much speed showing on video. some another youtube video man look saw book for metal showing 58.3 rpm.
