Turning an IKEA Dresser into an Industrial Steam Punk Trunk | IKEA HACK

- I took this basic pine IKEA Dresser and completely made it over to look like an antique steamer trunk. Pottery Barn has one that I used as a model but I put my own special spin on it using readily available supplies.
I applied upholstery fabric to the dresser and drawers and then painted it black with my DIY All-In-One Paint. Trim was cut to resemble the strapping and side pieces on a steamer trunk.

It was a lot of work getting the fabric on and painted and all the wood and tacks…but what an outcome!! Beautiful! I do like the aged look too! Great job and I love your videos. Sometimes I look at your before and think there’s no way this is going to look better and then you pull it off!

Great dresser hack. I shall use some of your tips on my furniture that needs to be spruced up.
That was really cool! I have no idea about Pottery Barn and what their furniture looks like. But if you were going for a Steamer Trunk look you got it. A lot of work there but appreciated seeing all the steps.

The edges if the piece look a little too crisp to be old. You could use a piece of 2 x 4 held up against the sharp corners and hit the block with a hammer to round those out a little bit. It would look like it had been used and shipped around a lot. A few "fly specks" wouldn't hurt either. It is beautiful, and I think I am going to do this. I would think a half gallon of cheap carpenter's glue would work as well as the modge podge. Right? Thanks again, you are amazing.

It turned out so nice. Yes, it looks like an extremely expensive piece! Being a mom of boys though, I cringed at a textured top! LOL I envision everything spilled on it that is sticky from candle wax to Kool-Aid.

Great idea and outcome. A really good re imagining whilst staying true to its ikeaness.
Have a look at your mitre saw. It's cutting a whisker over 90 deg. If you cut a fraction under instead of over, mitres will meet at the tips and be easier to fill. There's a little screw you can adjust...
Would love to know if the mod podge holds on the finished surface longer term I've never used the stuff myself.

The wood color made such a difference. While my impulse was that something was missing, upon your darkening trim, I think you were correct the first time. Lovely in either case.

This is a real duplicate of your inspiration piece! You put on so much effort but the result is excellent! Beautiful! I think that you could have used upholstery nail pins of another color, instead of gold, maybe brass like ones, and you would have skipped the glassing part. Thank you so much for sharing all these tips and for being so explicative about the process of your work!
I agree that I should have used different tacks. I was not planning on putting the glaze. I also could have saved money by NOT getting brass corners. Again- I was not planning on painting them black.

It could have used some distressing, scratches, dents, chipped surface. All in all it looks good.
It would have helped if you had quickly sanded the cabinet so the glue stuck better
hmmmm... did not think of that. The glue seemed to stick quite well though. I kept this for myself and I am looking forward to seeing how it holds up. I'd like to find a better glue than Mod Podge for adhering material to a piece of furniture.

You could probably save a lot of work by using grass cloth wallpaper instead of fabric.
The fabric was only $5 a yard and I used about 2 1/2 yards. Grass wall paper is super expensive. I have enough fabric left over to do another dresser. I saw one where they left the fabric the same color and painted the dresser tan. It looked really cool. Or.. perhaps put is on the drawers of a desk and paint the desk tan. So many possibilities!
You are very patient, I wonder how many hours you spend on this dresser...
hmmmm.... Let's see..... probably about 8 hours in total. I actually entered in the Makers Challenge contest on Instagram. So, fingers crossed!
Would I take it correctly that the Mod Podge was still wet when you pulled up the edge of the fabric to add more?
I would personally have thought to use rubber cement. It would still be possible to later Mod Podge over the top for the sake of stiffening the fabric, but it wouldn't be vulnerable to coming loose with moisture.
(Rechecked the video. It wasn't wet.)
It looks pretty, but if I was wanting to imitate a $2000 furniture item, it would be a shame for the fabric to fall off. Hope it holds up fine. It might still be possible to use rubber cement afterwards if you do get a peeling problem -- removing the Mod Podge residue from the underlying finished wood, letting it dry, then doing the rubber cement thing on the fabric and the finished wood, being careful about laying the fabric back down because it will grab at once. Beginning on one side to the middle and finishing up on the other side would be the friendliest thing to keeping the alignment, I think. Again, if it proves necessary.
hmmm.... never thought of rubber cement. I will have to test that some day. Don't they use rubber cement to secure veneer to wood? The fabric was still wet when I added more mod podge. I had only partially dried.
