How hollow do you need to make the sculptures? Are you filling the mold 75%? Or less? How solid/hollow should I aim to make my casts? Does your rotational technique work if you fill the mold completely? Your videos are absolutely fantastic. Thank you so much!
For what it's worth, I have filled small divots in a final casting by wetting the area and then applying a little fresh plaster with a watercolor paintbrush. Nice work, J.B..!!
Amazing work. Can you comment on what you made the hardshell out of and your process of making it? (ie. was it fiberglass reinforced plaster or something else)
Most excellent instructional video ! Just finishing a rather complicated 45 inch tall Indian sculpture and you gave me the confidence I needed . Where do I purchase a John Burns T-shirt ? Thank You for sharing your skills .
Molds are great! I like to think of them as a security backup plan. But with them we can make multiples to save work effort, sell or gift to others. I'm glad I could help. Thanks for watching friend!
Okay so I got into resin 3D printing a year ago. I got decent at printing and painting resin statues. Do you have any good mold making video content? I am talking content specific to casting statue pieces. Not full statues. Mainly because my stuff needs to survive shipping. I will install magnets and all that post process.
Its all the same process. But I do have a molding video where I make up several molds in one sitting. There's another video that shows how to cut it where to cut the arms off for assembly later. Check my video play lists. There's only about 40 videos anyway. You'll find them
That's correct. Just hydrostone and water. 3:1 respectively or 100 parts powder to 33 parts water. Have fun and wear gloves because it can seriously dry out your hands after a few batches, sometimes burns.
Hello, really nice jobs and chanel, with a lots of explanations and knowledge sharing. I m wondering if you can recycle the product you use ? plaster, silicon etc... . Also, do you always need to make your creation in plaster? You can't glaze it and put in an hoven ? I m begining sculpture, so I m wondering
Thanks for watching my content. I hope it creates a more enjoyable sculpting experience. Unfortunately, plaster cannot be recycled for reuse, neither can silicone. I like plaster/hydrostone casts, but you can also cast resin/plastics in silicone molds. If you want to glaze your pieces and fire them in a kiln, you'll want to study slip cast molds made of pottery plaster. Good luck with your projects and take your time to learn your subject matter. It'll make all the difference. ☘️
Hi Zach. The short answer is no. I only use mold release with silicone when there is silica in the model (i.e. glass, ceramic, other silicone compounds, etc). Then I usually use a thin layer of Vaseline. Cheers
Hi Stephen! Yes, periodically I cast resins. If you saw the sneak peak at the end of this video, you saw my latest sculpture. When that one is molded, I will be casting it in bonded marble (resin and marble powder).
Unfortunately, my roto-castor has a max mold dimension of 16". But I'll be happy to make a video on it. It's not perfected yet because I need an AC 12V 2.5A convertor.... I think! :) It should still work manually if one has the patience for it.
Thanks Romain! I am using a typical hydrostone plaster from a ceramics supply store. Be aware this is much harder than traditional "pottery" plaster and tends to set very quickly when it kicks. This make lead to a very uneven coating inside. Be patient with your casting experience. I like to think about the inside of the mold while I'm rotating the slurry. I feel it helps me subconsciously rotate it more intuitively. Thanks for watching my videos ☺️👍
@@JonBurnsFineArt I did try it. After a few days of curing time I used diamond abrasive pads I used diamond abrasive pads I use to clean and polish granite and marble. Starting with 50 grit and then progressing to 3000 I was able to achieve and semi-gloss finish over the entire surface. I was satisfied. This piece was a plinth/base for a wooden sculpture so it was a large cube with all flat surfaces. I doubt if I could do the same on a more sculptural piece. Thanks for answering my question.
Hi Judith! These pinholes were so small the paint went right over it no problem. Hydrostone on top of hydrostone I don't believe is the best answer. When it comes out if the mold there is a type of eggshell quality to the casting. You'll know what I mean if you've tried to clean up seam lines. Try using modeling paste. It glides over, easy to rub down with a Brillo pad before full cure and can be painted over. I show the product in the video link below. Best of luck! -Jon ua-cam.com/video/dl3aT-i8O-U/v-deo.html
I would not use a vacuum. I've made countless wax castings from silicone molds for bronzes. You want outward pressure from the inside of the mold. A vacuum would implode the interior. Not favorable. Not at all.
This is the final video for this project. I built this clock and set the sculpture on the top. The boy's leg was designed to hang over the great wheel and adds a nice dynamic I think. ua-cam.com/video/F9WasErig0U/v-deo.html Thanks for your gracious comment. I’m preparing for my first mold. Thanks for doing what you do it will really help

Well done
Beautiful work!
Thank you!
Passing on knowledge is a true path to immortality.
Thank you
That's right. The stove will not produce heat until it has been filled with wood. Thank you for your kind words.
Thanks, very informative and professional

Love it. Once I come out of this covid lockdown crisis I will try and support you financially. Thank you for your great videos
Good job, unique contents and tips, thanks

You're most welcome! When you're pouring, just remember "quiet plaster". It helps reduce bubbles. Best of luck 🤞
“Horse gelatin” has! Love it, thanks for the tutorial needed this!
hey man love these videos, i have a Ganesha idol that i sculpted of which i want to make a mould of, these videos will help me thanks so much... !!

do you use a release agent on the silicone?

Pretty good 👏👏👏👌👌👌
Wow nice
Beautiful series with excellant explanations around your process. Looking forward to watching more!

Where do you get your bonded marble? Do you formulate it yourself?
Great job,
Thank you for this amazing content
I'm wondering since I could not find it in your description, what plaster are you using exactly ?
Thanks Romain! I am using a typical hydrostone plaster from a ceramics supply store. Be aware this is much harder than traditional "pottery" plaster and tends to set very quickly when it kicks. This make lead to a very uneven coating inside. Be patient with your casting experience.

Would it be possible to cast it solid with this type of material if you wanted@@JonBurnsFineArt
After curing can you wet sand and then polish hydrostone to achieve a higher gloss finish? Thank you.
I wouldn't try that on a good piece. I don't think that can be done without a acrylic finish or something like it.

how do you stop bubbles in the plaster?
Can the pinholes be patched with additional hydrostone? Will it adhere?

Thank you, Jon. I will try the modelling paste. Thank you for your generous sharing of your knowledge. Your work is beautiful.
Can this kind of mold be used with slip casting stoneware clay? or is the silicone not condusive to the silicone mold?
That's correct 💯. The nature of slip works by pulling water out of the deflaculated clay into the plaster mold.
Nice work. If you listen to videos of his son Jiri they pronounced their name Mew-SHAH in the French way. Impress your art friends.
With a Silicone lined plaster mold, can you use a vaccum? I'm studying to make wax molds for metal casting.
I would not use a vacuum. I've made countless wax castings from silicone molds for bronzes. You want outward pressure from the inside of the mold. A vacuum would implode the interior. Not favorable. Not at all.
