They really should make the Kali altar and shops spawn on the sides of the map on the drill level...

Egg, here's a tip for finding the Black Market.
The Black Market only spawns on 2-2, 2-3, and 2-4.
If there is a Moon Challenge on one of the above levels, then there will be no Black Market on that same level.

Vlad's Cape has some pretty great upsides, but I think the best thing about it is it's lack of downsides; it doesn't burn or explode. With any of the other back items, if you get _touched_ by fire, you're losing the item at the very least, and in most cases you're probably dead because you got blown to kingdom come. Vlad's Cape doesn't need to worry about any of that. It sticks with you even if you kill yourself (if you have the Ankh).

That drill was extremely cursed they really should make it so no shops or altars can spawn on it's path.
Man, I have to be honest I miss the Vulkania. Way cooler and it just makes me sad hearing you say it the other way now.
You don't need to use the drill, if you find a spike ball trap you can use that to burrow down, or use 6-7 bombs if necessary, so its nice to scope out the drills path and weigh the risks first, personally if i see any lava that's a no go for me, if I see kali or shop thats a no go.
As a side note if you use those crush traps at the bottom of the level, I typically go till about 2 minutes on the clock before finishing with bombs if I need to

3:58 This is why I don't get why grab button is the same as whip button. And why you need to crouch first either. The only reason I can think of is Derek wanting to cause these situations.
It drives me crazy because lb is never used either, it makes no sense that crouch + attack is pickup. The worst part is it's like the one key you can't rebind....

@@evanseifert8858 they could make a button specifically for grabbing, and make it have the crouch + grab animation if there is something to grab.

So about Yang - I have once dropped the log of an altar trap through his establishment, but it missed the turkey, and Yang did not aggro at all. It seems he does not care about the integrity of his roof.
Also, remember that with the spike pits like the one at 3:20 you can drop something from above to break the bone block, then just hop down. As spicy as it seems, the risk of missing the safe spot is really low

If the DING sounds and a shopkeeper dies, you are blamed and take +3 rooms of anger
Not that simple. If he does by spikes, lava or thorny vines, then you are blamed and get +5 floors. If you do damage to him but he lives, you get +2 floors I believe, might be 3. But if he dies to other traps, you don’t get blamed.
PROTIP : (at 2:12) if you push one of the blocks slightly inwards, then grab the idol the falling pillar will stop and not crush whatever shop or Kali altar below.
With monty before the quillback you have to place the bomb strategically on the corner! :)

Hey nl idk if you'll see this but if you do, in tidepool you can actually survive having the lava fall with enough bombs and ropes, which gives you space to make more mistakes later in the run. Using this trick i was able to make it further than i ever had, even past the sunken city(i wont spoil what comes next
Egg - you have definitely crushed yourself with those block, IN the stars challenge, multiple times. In Spelunky 2.
NL I have been wanting to let you find this out on your own but after today’s episode I think it’s necessary. When Monty is in a box, stand above him and carefully place the bomb above the top left or right block. This will always free him without damage.

I think the 5% discount is more than you give it credit for. It feels way stronger. I think it also cancels inflation, which stacks up quite a bit into the jungle. I could be wrong, but keeping a bomb box at 9500 at 2-3 when you can use your purchased supply to gather more gold. Buying shoes at any point makes idols simple, and unless you only get hired help or weapon shops, cleaning them out yields great results
Perhaps you are already aware, but you can always kind of get to dracula's lair by just bombing your way down on that level without using the drill. If I have a lot of bombs, I usually do it that way. With the TNT everywhere it usually only takes 6-8 bombs to get down there. Great for runs where you couldn't get the Udjat eye also.
NL makes me so mad because one minute he’s juggling a ghost pot when the ghost is already out, and the next he’s resource managing like a pro.
The Duality of Egg.
For idols in the dwelling with the pushable blocks you can move one partially under the log and it wont break through the floor.
The Big spiders stand no chance against your spike shoes you can always save a bomb while wearing them :)

Hey NL, couple of things. if you bomb at the bottom of 1-4 you only have to spend one bomb to get to the other side. if the shopkeepers kill themselves you're good, but you can't hurt them. You jumped on their heads a couple of times, that was part of the issue

Hey NL, to get Monty out of one of those "cage" formations like at 8:20, you can put a bomb on either of the top corners (has to be pretty precise) and it won't kill him.

if Quillback doesn't open the path to the side you want to go, you can just use one bomb on the bottom to get through from the other side by going through the room in the middle
NL a little tip if you have the Capala in Volcania (Vlad's castle) you can get 99 hp

Cheapest way to get to the other side if Quillback refuses to open the path you want is to bomb your way into the shortcut for 1 bomb.

NL, you can use bombs to drain lava away pretty easily.
Black market vs dracula's castle is not the difference between a jetpack and dracula's cape, it's the difference between a *potential* jetpack and a guaranteed dracula's cape. How often do you actually get a jetpack in the black market? Not every run.

Yeah this has sort of convinced me that Volcana isn't worth it, at least if Derek doesn't move the shop/altar out of the drill's way
Hyup, NL even demonstrates the simpler and fairer version of the drill mechanic, the Dwelling's totem trap, earlier in the video when he catches that Yang is underneath and would be aggro'd. The fact that you need to leave the fate of your run up to RNG to get to bonus stuff through Volcana straight up throws that comparison vs the Jungle out the window.

If you have enough bombs you can bomb down to the entrance to Vlad's castle too. IIRC it takes about 8 bombs. Still a crappy situation, though.

NL both the black market and the drill in volcana can’t spawn on the same floor as the moon challenge. They also can’t spawn on 2-1, along with the salad sisters
I feel like a patch for the Volcano to make Kali / Shop NOT spawn below the drill would be a great step. Kinda blows to have your run shafted by something out of your control. Even if you scouted it to know they were down there, what are you going to do, just flush the run? Also, would using the freeze ray on the lava do anything to stop the drip of death?
When you freeze lava it gets rid of a drop of it to make a rock, so you could get rid of lava that way. It's more efficient with the power pack but you know, if you have that you probably would've gone to the jungle

@@JakeyTheMistakey He even calculated he would need to spend over 100k to break even and decided it was worth it. It would need to be 110k to make up for the 5500 Spiked Shoes. I don't think he's ever spent 110k on the Black Market.
@@carlwei yeah I noticed that. In my personal experience, if I get to the black market with over 100K, I usually get everything I want (jetpack or cape, bomb box, any shoes I might need etc.). I won’t go out of my way to get the discount but if a shop in dwelling has like, a bomb bag, bomb box, paste, and a parachute, I’ll spend the extra $1000 for the parachute to get the discount because at that point, why not?

Nl underrates volcana cuz he doesnt know how to play it imo. ice gun = super good, also shopkeepers always jump in lava = free gun. Plus, the reason why future NL would like volcana, no need for money means QUICKER runs

It's the climbing gloves, but this was a bug and was patched out in the most recent update.

"passing up one of every item in the game" black market typically has like a third of the items and you don't even afford all of those. NL's problem is both underrating the cape AND overrating black market.
Black market average yield is like, crown, 12 bombs, 1 or 2 items tops.
Volcana is harder, I don't disagree about that, but the yield is in fact better. You usually get a crate or two as well as the cape for that matter, and the cape itself is better than some bombs and 1-2 items generally. Mobility is king.
One or two items is a big understatement, NL's definitely had runs where he's bought three or four items plus bombs from the Black Market. There's also the bomb box from the Children of the Forest, which is usually equal or better than whatever you get in the crates on Vlad's Castle. I think it comes down to whether you think Vlad's Cape is worth four items plus bombs, and NL clearly doesn't think so.

Again, four items plus bombs is a pretty unrealistic scenario 90% of runs, I mean shit I went black market yesterday because I got a dwellings jetpack, I literally ONLY got bombs and ropes, because there were 3 power packs, 2 machetes, dog, and the two types of boots I already had in a few quantities. Boots that I also got on dwellings. I left that black market with 60k gold left because there was nothing worth buying after buying out the ropes and bombs.
For every run where you get 4 or more items, there's a run where you get literally no items you don't have. Yes, the bombs are valuable, but vlad's cape is generally worth more, if NL grabbed it pretty much ever and practiced with it he'd probably agree in time.
But yeah, we all know NL doesn't think it's worth it, even if he's wrong about it, we do all know his thoughts.
IMO he mostly just likes it so much because jungle's notably easier, which is valid, but I wish he wouldn't act like it's a better value play when it's mostly just that.
@@NearoC I still think that 1 or 2 items is an underestimation. Usually the Black Market has some good stuff, the chance that it doesn't is very small unless you've been extremely lucky with getting items earlier in the run.
I don't think that the plasma cannon is worth much since you have to drop it for the Qilin jar. So it mostly comes down to whether you think that Vlad's cape is better than the Black Market, and I don't think it is on most occasions. Anyway, it's not fair to call NL wrong for preferring the Jungle, as it's all up to personal preference.

Honestly, NL already has a disdain for Volcana (which I think results from him not knowing/being adept at handling lava) but the game is really not doing him or the viewers any favors when it gives you garbage seeds like that where an altar is broken and a shopkeeper is angered.
Valcana isn't that bad, but I don't blame NL for hating it when stuff like that happens pretty often to him haha.
Honestly, if Derek is already tweaking stuff like the Dwelling and Olmec, he should change the drill stage to never be above a shop or an altar.

I think the drill is fine as is. As someone who mainlines Volcana, the shopkeepers and altars are somewhat of a rarity and the lava itself is not a big problem when you get the hang of it. If anything, I rather see tweaks to the temple and tide pool before any change comes to the world 2 biomes.
