    Hi Steve,
This upcoming build of Trumpeters 1/200 scale Bismarck will in all likelihood eclipse all the other builds of this kit on UA-cam. Your craftsmanship is second to none.

Hi Steve, I'm so looking forward to following you on this build. I've dabbled on and off with modelling over the years and I bought this kit about ten years ago now, cost £205 then if I remember correctly. The plan was to save it for when I didn't need to work anymore and then get back into modelling. Well, I don't work anymore so I'm back into it and hopefully I'll get to a better standard than previously. The Bismark kit is still on the back burner for a bit while I do some other stuff from my small stash to get me going again. That book is already on its way to me after seeing it on Ron Calverley's channel. The Pontos kit scares the life out of me though! Take care my friend.

As a Bismarck aficionado, it's a nice change of pace to see a kit that depicts her paint scheme after the stripes were painted over. Nearly all kits have the stripes, which look nice, don't get me wrong, but are tough to paint on the superstructure. I've built the 1/700 kit, and have the 1/350 on my list of future projects. The 1/200 is a dream for now, lacking the space to build it.

Great news to hear that you recently started your Bismarck build. I have started some weeks ago. So I guess that I can learn a lot from you.
My plan is to build the ship in its very first configuration without camouflage.
But I am not shure what shades of grey I have to use.
From Blohm&Voss I got the information that their display model is RAL 9018 papyrus white (superstructure) and RAL 7000 light grey (hull) but I don' feel very comfortable with it because of the big contrast.
    Cheers

Great intro to what will be another stunning build. I am going off by memory here so might be getting mixed up, but I believe the yellow tops to the turrets were reapplied for the dash to the French coast as this would bring them into range of German occupied France's Luffewaffe. Apparently this wasn't very successful due to the bad weather and sea state hindering the paint sticking.

Good luck, looks like your life has been leading up to this build with all that intricate brass work. I read that, and not sure that it makes any real difference but the swastikas fore and aft were not painted over, but covered by a canvas presumably to be uncovered on her return to port. Indeed the underwater photographs of the wreck clearly show the swastikas on the decking. Looking forward to the unveiling in summer 2023.

Yes mark, I think you're right. It is hard to imagine that a meticulously researched and photographed (with artists rendering) book like R D Ballards The Discovery of the Bismark would get that wrong. Clearly shows her resting on the bottom emblazoned with the swastikas, the stern one truncated by the missing hull piece weakened by the torpedo strike. I was going to make this same comment.

Bismarck's War Diary entry (as "reconstructed" in July 1941 by the Kriegsmarine’s Office of Naval Operations (Seekriegsleitung)): 22nd May at 13:07... (Air raid) Alarm ended. Afterwards, by order of Fleet, the aircraft identification markings on the turrets and the national emblems [swastikas] on the forecastle and quarter [poop] deck are to be painted over. Ballard's book also states that the swastikas were painted over before leaving Norway (at page 177) but that the paint has been eroded by time and seawater.

Just for your information. I will be following this build closely. I built several versions which I sold many years ago.
There were no yellow turret tops during the "Battle of Denmark Strait." I settled this argument two decades ago through primary source testimony. I have excellent research on this period as I worked in a museum and acquired hand-written letters from the first gunnery officer of Bismarck who survived the sinking (Burkard von Mullenheim-Rechberg), and the pilot of the Catalina (Flying Boat) who found Bismarck location after the battle.
Both eye-witness testimony (now deceased) claimed the "turret-tops" were undoubtedly grey. Rechberg's actual words were (quote), "When I slid down turret "Dora" into the sea she was a beautiful grey." - referring to the turret tops. He also personally signed the letter and confirmed the claim.
Furthermore, the splinter camo was also hastily painted over as well (with thin paint), prior to battle, (due to the heavy fog in the seasonal region). The German navy never messed around whet it came to deception tactics. The "yellow" turret-top is a myth. Cheers ~ Boomer.

Please let me tell you my story. I have been following these episodes for some time now. And I said: "Ok I will buy the PE Pontos set and try. But first I will see again the unboxing of the kit." So I came back to see the unboxing and WHAT??!!! I remember the first time I saw the unboxing of a black box, also Pontos, item # 66602, Bismarck Detail Up Set.
Now I am really confused, I saw another UA-cam channel? Because this is the only channel with this TITLE.
Now two questions: can you tell me the difference between the set you bought (the one you unboxed in this episode, item 27001), and the one with the black box, item 66602 Pontos?
and where can I buy in the US the one you got (item 27001)? I was going to buy the one in the black box (Item 66602)
    Thanks a lot.

      Now, which one to buy?
I found them both. The item 27001 is $ 80 more expensive than item 66600. Which one should I get? I would like to follow your videos in the build. I wonder if I get the 66600 I can still follow your videos for the building.

66600 and 66602 are rebranded Pontos sets under the “I love kits” name. However 66600 as quoted in you second message is for the titanic. 66602 is the basic Bismarck set whereas I’m using the advanced set with more PE. I got mine several years ago direct from Pontos so you’d have to do a web search for a current retailer maybe someone like BNA is Australia. The I love kits set 66602 is widely available.

When she was sunk she wore that swastika at least on the fore deck. When Dr. Ballard found her at her resting place there were remnants clearly visible. I'm not sure about the second one aft, you might look it up in the book written by Dr. Ballard. I might add that I am no friend of the nazi emblem, but for accuracy's sake you will have to put it on the fore deck.

@@TheModelShed as I recall the bow is more bulbous at the bottom. She had he bow changed after she was launched. When I bought the kit I was collecting books and information to add detail and authenticity and I found books that had photos of the bow and the shape was incorrect. It irritated me that the lower bow on the kit is in 2 pieces that are glued to the rest of the hull. Trumpeter could have easily fixed the tooling to correct the shape but in their usual haste to get the kit released they just passed it on. This is one of the things I hate about Trumpeter kits. They have ambitious release schedule and to get those kits out on time they skip things on the kits. They announce really interesting subjects but it’s almost expected that the builder will have to fix engineering mistakes. This is why I primarily have built kits from Tamiya, wing nut wings and the likes. They do their homework and put out a kit that’s as correct as they can be. Good luck on your build, adding the enormous amount of detail from the Pontos kit will be daunting. I hope you own an Optivisor,it made a big difference to me.

That book isn’t correct re the paint colours. Ludovick Kennedy (who was present at Bismarck’s last battle) described Bismarck as appearing “black” in colour, which made me scratch about, looking for the photographic evidence for that comment. Sadly, as there seems to be very little in the way of it, it’s difficult to say what the Port Side looked like at all but the Starboard Side was photographed more often and because of that, I can say the following: Both dark grey bow and stern patches (that foreshortened the hull image) were painted over. The bow area patch wasn’t completely painted out though, leaving an upright “finger” of the dark patch standing, just under the anchor area. The Baltic stripes were painted over but still showed through the paint job and some of the superstructure stripes were never painted over at all. Lastly, the stern “wave” had also been painted out.
On the Port Side, I don’t think that anybody can say with authority, just what markings were there on sailing? The Baltic Stripes had certainly gone but bow and stern patches (dark grey) may still have been in situ, along with the bow and stern waves.

Thanks Richard I’d be grateful if you could point me towards the references showing the partially repainted bow patch and the elements of superstructure stripes remaining in late May 41. I have access to photos confirming the removal of the stern patch and wave but the bow is low in the water after damage on 24/5 so the patch isn’t visible. At this point I can see no evidence of remaining superstructure stripes. obviously I want to get the model right so if you could mail me at the channel I’d appreciate it.

I don't want to pee on the party folks, but like all other warships of the time gun barrels were made of steel and I'm almost certain that the upper radio/com masts weren't made of brass either..
The rest of the kit looks great, but personally I think the brass guns and upper masts are more of a 'pimp up' than a 'detail up' .
What do you all think ?

I thought the Bismarck sank with the swastika on deck?

It did. I watched a documentary when they discovered the Bismarck they showed the stern part of which was missing but the remains of the swastika was still visible.

I’ll discuss my conclusion about this when I come to the deck installations Paul.
