Incredible start...do not forget degaussing cable lol...i forgot mine but scratching to think of how to mount a 0.5mm-0.8mm wire or rod to painted hull lol just slightly below boot top all the way along from below forward anchor💓💓💓
I'm looking forward to this build. I just recently discovered your channel and watched all of the Mosquito build videos. I learned more from those videos alone than any other UA-cam model series.
Delighted to see you starting this build Steve. I have my own Bismarck on the bench using the mk1 set. Mine has stalled a bit recently in favour of quicker builds so hoping your build will give me the inspiration and nudge I need to get going again with it. Your HMS Hood build series was absolutely fantastic and I am sure this one will be as well!
Great episode Steve. Been looking forward to your next ship build. I learn something from every one of your videos. Thanks for detailed explanations on how and what you are doing. Cheers!
Splendid start on this Steve - apologies for missing the premier - stuck in hospital and didn't get home until just before 9PM. At least you didn't get the issues that Nigel had with his Titanic, that hull was completely the wrong shape.
Looks like more perfection coming our way, your patience with the detail is incredible, you and other enthusiasts especially yourself help me a great deal as a renewed modeller I was an enthusiast some forty odd years ago hands do not work like they used to so any advice you give out is always gratefully received well done, Also could you say which plastic you use as it sticks well i like tried and tested saves costly mistakes it looks like 3mm White PVC Foam Sheet thanks again for the vids.
Found the hull improvements very interesting Steve thanks, I've Just received my Pontos set for this kit ,my god some of those parts are so small even in this scale ,I am going to need a bigger magnifier , Looking forward to the next episode,
This is going to be a beautiful and accurate build. Really looking forward to following this series. I have the same kit but I’m just going to build mine out of the box as time and finances won’t allow for much more.
An interesting and detailed start to the build. I watched a documentary a few days ago, James Cameron's Expedition Bismarck 2002 and there is some closeup footage of the Bismarck from the bow as it heads down the slipway. The vent in the hull you added is visible as is a good closeup of the bow taken head on. If you are interested it is good just for the black and white footage as well as showing the Bismarck as she is today. Looking forward to the next installment.
@@sandroiavazzo1112 From the James Cameron Expedition- Front view of the bow time frame 12:27-12:37, this shot has what looks like maybe a reinforcing plate or armour(?), there is a shot of the very bottom of the bow showing a circular plate time frame 12:42-12:37. The second reference I found is from the Movie "Sink The Bismarck" this clearly shows the two openings in the hull (Starboard side) time frame 1:00-1:01 this was found on You Tube and is clearer than the James Cameron shot of the same area.
Subject to correction, Bismark did not have that cut out in the bow. Only Tirpitz had it. If you google images Bismark in Drydock you can see two good photos of Bismark in a floating drydock. Further more please note that the anchor teardorps are too small in the kit. Keep it up great work.
Hi Chris thanks for the info I’ll check that out. at least it’s not a big deal to revert to the straight stem. Picked up about the teardrops I’ll look at those as well. 👍
Hard to believe a well-researched reference such as the one Steve is using could get that major detail wrong. Well picked up and kudos to our builder..."No worries, carry on."
Looks like this ship was fitted with sonar and/or a hydrophone system. The reinforcements on the hull are interesting. Makes you wonder what they added to her design.
Nice start, I like your docking keel solution less labour intensive than some I have seen. I think you have the A fraims for the pyrovain's in the pontos set, so you could ad the extended pyrovain mount and have a pyrovain suspended by wire. just a thought. Looking forward to more.
This is nice to see. I am good at building models. But I want to take it up a level. I am a machinists and work at a metal fab shop. So where you have been using plastic sheets I have been experimenting with metal in place of plastic.
Hi Steve, you mentioned brass mounting pedestals, will these be Pontos, great quality but o so expensive these days, not seen any alternatives other than a good lathe and a lot of patience. Kind regards David Porter
Hi Steve, wot a project! Exciting journey I‘m looking forward to follow! Because you are an experienced Pontos man I want to ask for your advice. Recently I got the Revell Tirpitz Platinum Edition, problem is, that the Pontos instructions are a complete mystery to me. You have any idea where to find Tipps&Tricks or How To…clips concerning Pontos? Or is learning by doing and trial & error the way I have to go? Cheers!
You’ve got it - trial and error is the thing: hopefully without a lot of the error bit. The instructions are difficult to follow. I’d suggest 1. study them and try to work out which steps to do when because the instructions are not really in any sort of sequence; and 2. find and download the instructions on line at the Pontos website so you can enlarge them. They’re fairly high resolution so easier to read than the paper provided in the set.
Great attention to detail Steve, as always. Really looking forward to this build. Would you consider the 1:200 scale yamato that's just been released someday?
I’ve never tried Chris but obviously the smaller the parts get the more care you need to take. Small parts generally hold together with CA glue anyway: I solder larger parts just for the strength it adds to the assembly.
Looking forward to this. Apologies if you have already covered this, but as you did with the Hood are you likely to be using 3d printed parts instead of some of the photoetch ?
@@TheModelShed Not 3d printed, but Veteran Models offer some combined plastic and PE kits for several of the smaller FLAK guns which might be worth looking at as possible alternatives to the Pontos PE versions.
I will begin to build the bismarck in January and I'm studying your videos of the build. And I have a question: What primer do you use for the hull ? And do you use it with the airbrush or as a spray out of a spray can ? Thank you
Hi Steve.. Another great build. Couple of questions…What was the purpose of the additional plating you are replicating on the bottom of the ship? And I have often seen you using your drill at a slow speed to start. Do you do this with your finger on the chuck, or, do you have a foot controller or similar? Cheers Geoff.
Hi Geoff I’ve no idea what the plates were but I’m just following the drawings. I slow the chuck with my finger - it’s an abuse of the motor I suppose but it’s survived for nearly 30 years 🤞
Hello Steve, Im sure that you have done research but i have not seen what you are doing here with these mods, i have a set of 1:100 full size....7 sheets approx 12 feet long German Drawings in German from Germany of the Bismarck drawn By F.W. Besch as she was in1941 showing none of this stuff, also not seen on the launching video on UA-cam, .......unless these are very late mods? I think I need to purchase a copy of the book you have and get up to date, anyway they look great.
I know Sandro I’m just going by the reference plans in the book. I think the plating on the underside is too far under to see on the launch video but you can see the shape of the slot in the bow although it is plated over at launch. I believe the author thinks that the sonar equipment was fitted back at B&V when the ship returned after shake down in the Baltic in Dec 40 along with the last radar and other equipment.
@@TheModelShedHi Steve, thanks for the reply, yes the 1:00 plans i have are very detailed why these mods were not added is a mystery, anyway if you need any assistance with mystery areas I maybe be able to help with the plans i have, i will take a photo of a page in these plans and post it in a Facebook Group i am in, i will let you know when.
What i like most about your builds is the attention to detail. People forget the hull underside.
Yes and this one is noticeable in profile as well Jerry - it’s looking good now I’ve had chance to prime it and do a bit of reworking
I am looking forward to your new build! Thanks to your video’s I finished the hood with the pontos set😊 greetings from the Netherlands
Thanks Pieter 👍
Hi Steve I think Trumpeter should consult you to.improve models . You brought this hobby to another dimension . Thanks, this is so refreshing ! JL

Great swastikas on ebay for the 1/200 scale very easy to apply and thin enough for deck planking to show through. Also 1/350 scale.
Great start for another fullfilling series of maritime build videos.
I hope so Ralf-Ingo 👍
