    Thank you so much for posting this video. I'm taking my daughter fishing for her first time, and I've never used a bait caster. In fact, it's been over a decade since I've been fishing myself, and plenty I've forgotten. This video was tremendously helpful in getting prepped for what I hope to be a successful trip. Much love.

    Been watching your channel for a while.. I just set up my first baitcaster this morning.. before watching this. I had to use backing, as my spool didn't have any holes or anything.. I love your reasoning why you should or shouldn't use a leader though. Ive only been fishing for a few months now, and have used a leader, because that what I saw people do online. But your reasoning as to why you dont, makes perfect sense to me. Love you channel mate.

    always exciting to spool a baitcaster. a good tip i learnt wen spooling braid was if you had access to a boat or kayak, let the line out with a lure and after a certain length, wind in the lure using the water resistances to allow the braid to be properly set on the reel.

    The tatula is beautiful to use ! Love mine. Diawa stuff is probably the best i rekon.
    I use a fair amount of backing with 75m of 20lb J braid. That way i can spool 2 reels from 150m spool.60 or 70m is plenty for those reels.
    Those Fastach clips are the best ! A barra charter operator said if you dont tie directly to the lure , that clip was the only ones he recommends.
    Tie my leader with a FG knot. Done right they fly through the guides well.
    Cheers Robbie and take care mate !

    Or you can wrap a single layer of electrical tape around the spool and tie a braid line to it the same as you would mono. Electrical tape will prevent the braid from slipping on the spool but it's not always something you'll have with you when you're on the shore rigging up to fish. Also, sometimes leaders are used for reasons other than strength...if you're using a heavier weight braid main line, you may want a lighter-weight fluoro leader for fish that are line shy (such as steelhead) and for the invisibility in water. High-vis braid is visible to fish. Lighter-weight leader lines also may result in less tackle lost. If you're running a float on a baitcaster, you can throw the float and weights on the main line and tie your hook to the leader so you're only losing the hook in the event of a snag or break-off. Your float and weights will remain on the stronger main line if your lighter-weight leader breaks off.

    If you can remove the spool, tie a uni knot then twist the loop over the spool 3 times and cinch it down - braid directly on the reel and it'll never spin. With the new generation BFS reels the spools are way too shallow to have backing, you'd literally have room for 20m of braid. 😂 There's a good video on youtube to demonstrate it.

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  2 роки тому

  • @darylC_2306tiger1
    @darylC_2306tiger1 4 роки тому

    Hey Robbie another great vid, I never knew that you could thread the line through the holes in the spool,
    some good info right there, also on the fact that you don't use leader for you cod setup what about lighter bait cast setups do you do the same, I have worked out how to tie an fg knot without using tension but it is still a pain, surely catching lighter fish without a leader would not be such a problem?
    Cheers mate.

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  4 роки тому

      Thanks Darly. In all honesty, I have nevber in all my years of fishing had an issue cause by not using a leader. However in saying that, my biggest cod is 98cm, I have never hooked onto a 130cm fish of a life time either.
      I have seen so many peoples knots break or come undone because they haven't tied them properly. Meaning that their risk of losing a monster might not be any less than mine.
      It definitely is a personal choice, but I feel I would be doing an injustice to my followers by advising them not to use a leader.

      Set your drag so that it's 25-30% of your line's breaking strength. If you're using 30 lb braid for example, you want to set your drag to 7.5-10 lbs. You can use a fish scale and tie your line to the hook on the scale, then have someone hold the scale and adjust your drag so that it holds until you pull the amount of weight that will allow your drag to release line.

      Hey Nick, you're not hassling me at all mate.
      Fins is excellent line. J braid is too. I like them both.
      I tvink Fins is easier to use and less prone to tangling, but J braid is softer. Just my personal observations mate.

    I literally pulled all my braid off my spool yesterday and put a mono backing on because the braid was spinning on the spool, fixed it! Very important 😂

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  4 роки тому +1

      haha Sure is very important mate. If the spool is fluted you can tie straight to the spool, if it isn't then mono is a neccessity. LOL Even a but of duct tape will help.

    Cool vid but for a bait caster u do not need a 50 pound line on ur baitcaster no bass is bigger then 20 and u don’t need to use all of the line either unless u are salt water fishing and if u are u need a salt water bait caster

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  2 роки тому

      It's a good think I'm not fishing for bass. LOL
      I'm fishing for Murray cod, which can grow to well over 100lb.
      Most of the fish I catch are under 10lb. The heavy line isny always about the size if the fish, but the size of the snags that I hook. Lures are very expensive and with 50lb line I lose less lures. Haha

    How much line can you put on a bake casting real. Is there bike casting reels that have more line capacity? And can you catch like Cub or a bake casting rods are designed to only catching bait type fish like little fish Salmon trout rainbow trail Tommy's riding king George Whit is um the garfish That what a bait casting rod is designed for just for that type of fish or they can be used for bigger fish lights snapper and things like that.

      I just think for a baitcaster that much line weight seems over kill, use 15 pound here in florida and fish in some narly weeded stuff and still think that 15 pounds is a bit too much.

  • @Lachy1117
    @Lachy1117 Рік тому

    Why 50 pound thats like 20 something kgs on a baitcaster..

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  Рік тому

      A number of reasons. If I hook a monster cod my line is strong enough. When I get snagged I lose less lures with 50kg than I do with 30lb. I like to fish with a really tight drag. Lighter line is more likely to snap on the strike.

    there is no fish that will find it easier to cut through braid than flouoro, i have no clue what you're on about mate. fluoro is used for rock abrasion and visibility, it does not handle fish teeth well at all
