I met Cardale Jones 11 days after they won the National Championship. I was managing a GameStop in a mall in Ohio, and in walked Cardale with some kids from a local high school team. He was super cool to everyone, posed for a picture with me, and anyone else who asked. I remember there was a guy who was special-needs and in a wheelchair. He got down on one knee and talked to him for a couple minutes and posed for a picture with the guy. When he left the store, other people were walking up to him, and it was the same deal. Smiles and photos and handshakes for everyone. He was a class act dude. I wish he would’ve had a better career in the NFL, but he had a hell of an 11 games with the Buckeyes.
This Buckeyes team will always be special to me. It was a paradigm shifter and the epitome of the “Next Man Up” mentality. It’s relevant today because so many players hit the transfer portal too soon.
I don't think there will ever be another championship team in college football with a better story than this one, and it is often forgotten about behind a multitude of championships by Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, and LSU. The first ever 4 team championship playoff was won by a third string QB who's first three college starts were the Big Ten Championship, Sugar Bowl against the undefeated #1 team in the country, and the National Championship game, yet the Buckeyes won the whole thing, and did so convincingly. It doesn't get any crazier than that!
Something not mentioned is that Ohio St. had to go through all 3 Heisman finalists that year. Melvin Gordon was the RB for Wisconsin, Amari Cooper was the WR for Alabama, and then the Heisman winner in Marcus Mariota.
I was there and that was an absolute epic play. But after Friday night, it's replaced by the 4th and 8 goalline stand strip sack scoop and score by Jack Sawyer. It....was....GLORIOUS!!! LET'S GO BUCKEYES!
I’ll never forget walking thru Kmart and everyone started going nuts when it was announced OSU made the playoffs when no one thought it would happen. So cool.
Several thoughts. JT Barrett's start against Navy was his first start in 2 years. Injured his senior year of high school, and redshirted his first year at OSU. 85 yards through the heart of the South. Minnesota was in 15 degrees, don't know the wind chill. A Wisconsin player years later confessed that when they saw how far Cardale could throw, they knew they were cooked. I wish I could remember names, they deserve to be, but just before half of the Bama game we had a halfback pass to the end zone, the receiver made a leaping grab right at the sideline, and SOMEHOW turned his foot sideways so that he landed inbounds with his foot parallelling the sideline by an inch! And as great as Zeke was, the defense having to defend Cardale's cannon of an arm (nickname- 12 gauge) helped make room for Zeke to run. That was an incredible, magical run. It's even more fun to win when you aren't expected to.
Man! I was in 8th grade watching these games on the couch with my dad. To be in the student section for those games must have been the time of your life!!
Favorite memory from this team has to be the win at Michigan State. It was not only a statement win that proved they were for real that season but they also got revenge for the BIG Ten Championship loss that occurred a year earlier against Michigan State.
^ this, not only a statement win but also the fact they were ranked 8th is what had brought us back up in the rankings to even have a shot at finishing in the top 6 by the end of the season to even be considered for the playoff. i think for me it was the 2OT win at penn st where i really started to feel some real life from the team, but the michigan state game is where the magic started.
That's who! I remember the play, but not the names. However did Michael Thomas, in the air, turn his foot sideways so that it paralleled sideline and stayed inbounds?
Yes the 2014 has to be a favorite , all the adversity that team went through.......losing to VT losing their 1string QB Braxton Miller , than JT Barrett lets not forget a team mate by the name of Kota Karageorge who died. Thankfully that team showed so much resilience and pride.........thats hard to beat .
Harry Miller and Ryan Day reminded me of Kota Karageorge (but sadly, not his name. I'm sorry). The way Ryan Day dealt with and protected Harry Miller during his emotional struggles of that season, told me all about Ryan Day that we needed to know. No coach is perfect on the field, but Ryan deserves our respect for what he did for Harry *off* the field.
I was 8 when we won it was about midnight I remember and we went outside and shot fireworks off to celebrate we pissed off our neighbors but it’s still one of my favorite memories
I had already conceded we weren’t making the playoff and my work Christmas Party was during the game but it was at a bar. So I was cool half-heartedly keeping an eye on it while I drank and mingled. I can’t explain how wild it was to see another 7pts on the board seemingly every single time I glanced up at the TV. I did end up watching the game in full a few days later and to this day that Wisconsin game is the most perfect football game I’ve ever seen Ohio State play.
Boy, I still remember this happening. Hearing that the Buckeyes won the National Championship was like Christmas morning for me, given that I was a huge Ohio St fan since I was a kid. To think that they're back in the Natty 10 years later. Time flies
An 8 team CFP wouldve been great that year and I think the CFP wouldve been: 1. Alabama vs 8. Michigan St. 2. Oregon vs 7. Mississippi St. 3. Florida St vs 6. TCU 4. Ohio State vs 5. Baylor A CFP with Mariota, Jameis, Boykin, Jones, and Prescott wouldve been a movie
I had just moved back to Ohio in August of 2014 after leaving in 1990. It was special to me because it was a crazy season and when playoff selection came, I said if the get in, I’m going to NOLA. I eventually did go to the Sugar Bowl and witnessed the single most joyous victory in my lifetime against BAMA. It was nuts and running into lifelong friends at the game and afterwards on Bourbon Street topped off the great memories
I didn't write off Ohio State. Right when I heard the news Braxton Miller was out, I told everyone. "Watch Ohio State win the national championship". They did, I had that much faith in my friend. 🥰🥰
if osu wins the natty that would be two 3 star recruited qbs to do so for osu. weird coincidence considering we really haven’t won sh*t with 5 and 4 star qbs
The Buckeyes have the spirit, heart and love for the Game. never surrender. The Great Woody Hayes quote : The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender: Go Bucks!!!
Favorite moment of 2014 season national championship game (January 2015 game) as a Florida Gators alumnus & fan....................when Buckeye QB Cardale Jones ran into Oregon 's nose tackle 320-lbs & 6'5" Alex Balducci, the largest, strongest defensive player on the Oregon Ducks defensive line, head first & trucked him.............pushing Balducci backwards 5 yards & then running over him. Balducci didn't know what hit him, but I'm pretty sure he thought it was a locomotive with pretty blue tweety birds circling overhead! 2nd favorite memory of that game? When Joey Bosa hunted down Oregon QB Marcus Mariota, that year's Heisman winner...............and took him down like a Lion takes down a gazelle! I'm a Gator...............but how can you NOT love those Buckeyes???
I remember this game. My extended family on my dad's side were all Oregon supporters (he's an Oregon native and made the mistake of supporting the Ducks over his alma mater that year, later saying that between the two schools in the state, he's more of a Beaver guy) and we were all going back and forth over who would win. I supported the Bucks over most of my extended family's pick of Oregon (grandma, several cousins, and my aunts and uncles). Felt great to have the last laugh in the end.
I remember this whole season to a tee! My favorite moments from that season were, us FINALLY taking out Alabama in a STATEMENT win, with Zeke running through them, and Cardale throwing dots, and also making a bet with my friend who is a Wisconsin fan, both of us in California at the time, and me just watching the BEATDOWN they gave the Badgers going 50-0
Cardale Jones was a true dual threat quarterback: Strong passing arm and the ability to run over would be tacklers as the game's announcers would describe him. Only played three games finishing 3-0 including winning the national Championship.
Beating Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship 59-0 was pretty cool. CBS did a highlight reel for both teams. The Wisconsin reel was less than a minute long. It started and ended with them running onto the field.
Crazy ass season, thought we was finished when starter went down then the back up started winning, thought hey be OK and then 2nd string guy went down and thought dam our season over for sure then he started slinging an winning it was crazy season. 3rd string dude had a cannon for an arm too
Braxton Miller had been the starting QB the previous 2 years before getting hurt, J.T Barrett as a freshman was legit before getting hurt, and then Cardale Jones did the unthinkable. then Braxton transferred to WR the next season, wish they utilized him a little more, but still awesome.
So many things about that season were unbelievable. That team just came together & played their tails off. Cardale was on his last breath with the coaching staff because of his comments about education & football.
I was at the Va Tech game. First series(?) we blitzed and JUST missed getting to the QB, and the receiver made a terrific catch! I turned to my wife and said that if Virginia Tech has to do that all day, we'll win. But they did, and we didn't. Re: East Carolina- sometimes it's hard not to be flat after a big upset victory.
Cardale playing so well led them to winning one National Title and losing one the next year. Urban tried the old Spurrier two QB system and it stunted the offense in 2015.
There's a video called Relive the Championship Season worth watching. It puts together clips and tells the story so well that should have been made into an actual movie. That being said, I'm a little nervous at how the nation has already decided that Ohio State will win against Notre Dame. Every player on ND is listening to this national disrespect now, quietly becoming more and more resolved. While OSU risks pulling a Rocky 3, where Stallone is barely training and being distracted by the hype, all while Mr. T is putting in the work.
@Guccimanny like what poop the bed in big games?? They do that every year... Ostate they lost, Big Ten title game they lost, pretty sure they lose v Notre Dame
#1 I'm an Ohio State fan my entire life. Grew up with Urban Meyer, went to school with him. Before he became the coach, I was bragging to my coworkers, who went to Penn State. That Urban would pick Ohio State over Penn State for the coaching position. Something nobody talks about of the championship team. The game in Happy Valley, where the referees blew the worst ever instant replay. Clearly 100% you could see the Ohio State interception against Penn State was trapped. Stevie wonder could probably even see it was trapped but yet the referees confirmed it was a good interception. That right there was the reason Ohio State even had a chance to play for the National Championship. Penn State lost by less than a touchdown. Ohio State prevented a possible Penn State touch down on that play. Ohio State ended up getting a touchdown on that play. All that being said, this is why I'm probably the only person in the United States who has the right to complain about terrible referee calls that hurt Ohio State, because I'm honest. I call it as I see it, whether it hurts my team or not. That being said, the next year the "Mr Roper" Referees in the Purdue game. They were playing to the crowd. They did more to hurt Ohio State against Purdue than the Boilermakers did. but I digress. Back to the video. 😁😁
This was definitely the best run in the playoff era and maybe ever until this year if they can complete the 2024/25 season with a Title. Tennessee S. E. C. Oregon Big10 champs Texas S. E. C. Notre Dame 13-1 independent I haven’t seen a 4 game stretch better by an Ohio State team.
you clearly don’t know what happened that year, they lost to virginia tech early on, braxton went down, and they werent supposed to be there. they weren’t supposed to beat bama with a 3rd string and weren’t supposed to beat oregon either
tough early loss against VT, Kosta Karageorge killing himself, clawing into the playoffs, 3rd string QB, taking down all 3 heisman finalists, downing the #1 team in round 1 how is that not a cinderella run?
Mike- Are you sure? Weren't all 4 of the first round games blowouts? NCAA basketball, nobody is arguing that the 69th team would have won the tournament, just that they deserved to be in. I think I favor 8 teams, but I'm sure we'll be going to 16 shortly. $$$
Bosa's sack of Penn State's QB by bulldozing the running back into him to win the game in OT that year is a vastly underrated play. The 2014 team was a buzzsaw. The Alabama game could have gotten ugly had Ohio State scored TDs instead of field goals in the early going. Sadly, the 2015 had the potential to be just as good - if not better - but played not to lose against Michigan State and paid the price. Had there been a 12-team playoff then, I would have liked Ohio State's chances to win it back-to-back.
What happened▬FACTS: Braxton Miller got hurt and JT had to take over at QB (JT is one of the BEST QB'S Thee Buckeyes have ever had - but that is for another video). The loss to Virginia Tech was because the offensive play calling kept calling for long passes even though VT had a deep Safety. That Safety intercepted JT's passes as easy as a fair catch. 2. JT got hurt in the Michigan game, the play calling kept having him run the ball instead of the halfbacks. SMH. 3. Enter Cardale Jones #12. His teammates already believed in him as they called him 12 gauge. He not only had a big arm, he also was a tough hard-to-tackle runner. After the Michigan game, a local middle school named Jones Middle school (in the same suburb where Jack Nicholas grew up) temporarily renamed their school "Cardale Jones Middle School". Cardale led Thee Buckeyes in the next three wins (Wisconsin, Alabama, Oregon) in majestic fashion and, because he was such a hot commodity then, probably would have been drafted in the 1st or 2nd round of the NFL Draft. Cardale opted to stay in school and the next season, when JT came back, he was back as a non-starter. If he had asked me, I would have told him to leave for the NFL when he was "hot" and then he could have paid for himself to finish school. But that was his decision, and he is doing OK, I hear. Of course, this was just a few years before NIL.. O - H ! !
@@INJURYCOMP Really! Drafted in the 4th round by the Bills. Was their 3rd string QB. Was cut by the Bills and picked up by the Chargers and placed on their practice squad before THEY cut him. Picked up by the Seahawks, placed on their practice squad and then THEY cut him as well. What was that you were saying?
It's funny this was posted 2 weeks ago. He asks, is this the greatest championship run ever? Not by a long shot! The best memorable runs the past 2 decades are both by Ohio State.
Calling any Ohio State team a Cinderella is crazy work. Did the team have its doubters, of course. Just because many had no faith in them, doesn’t make them a Cinderella, imo.
Yes, the Inaugural CFP was The Best. Imagine a repeat next week? (Jan 20, 2025! You just can’t fight a hungry lion. The won’t stop until they get the championship! 🎉
Lineman is not the same as QB, but how about being down 3 starting linemen, 2 of them All Americans, and one the Rimington Award winner. Maybe Justin Frye is a whole lot better than we give him credit for. Now if only the 4 & 5 star OL recruits could see that.
That year it should’ve been: Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State, and Baylor (since they beat TCU) Florida State should’ve never been in and were struggling all year TCU was dominant but losing to Baylor hurts them, otherwise, they would’ve been in over Ohio State
Everyone loves “head to head” until it comes to Baylor vs TCU. I never hear anyone argue it should be Baylor. Always TCU over OSU. Also I think FSU should’ve been left out. They had a worse regular season than the 2023 team that was left out
Yeah it was so obvious all season they didn't really belong. But they still had Jameis and an undefeated defending champ wasn't going to be left out. They'd just be another one of the bye teams that got blown TF out of the playoffs this year in a 12 team format
Over Braxton, the 2 time Silver Football Award winner as the Big Ten's MVP? Over JT, OSU's all time winningest QB? Cardale is the stuff of which legends are made, and his performances in those 3 games were magnificent. He answered the call, absolutely. But I have to trust the coaches who see the players every day as a better judge of who should be starting and who should be backup. Now, if you want to discuss the next year, when Urban had an impossible dilemma as to who to start, and totally fumbled it by NOT making a decision and then sticking to it....
I would like to know why 12guage was a backup that man was a starter QB and way overlooked these coachs can't judge worth a shit but they get paid millions they should be glad Jones didnt transfer
JT Barrett, compared to Cardale Jones, was the better player if we're talking about consistency. I think JT might have even been the better QB in terms of upside, too. To be fair, I don't think the offensive coaching staff did any favors to JT or Cardale in that 2015. When we finally settled with JT the team took off to a new level. 12 gauge was the guy we needed for the 2014 postseason run, and he handled the pressure of that situation very well-- but at the end of the day, JT was just the better, more consistent QB.
@@baractusobamiuscaesar5540JT did not have the arm or size as much though. Better runner and maybe little more accurate, but Jones probably had more potential.

This Buckeyes team will always be special to me. It was a paradigm shifter and the epitome of the “Next Man Up” mentality. It’s relevant today because so many players hit the transfer portal too soon.

but Penn state never did anything like this what does it have to do with anythibg
@Guccimanny like what poop the bed in big games?? They do that every year... Ostate they lost, Big Ten title game they lost, pretty sure they lose v Notre Dame
@@matthewmayle07112016 was last time, but anything can happen this year.
When zeike run that 80+yard run threw the bama defence😮
Cardale !! Season was amazing 1:45
Bucks doubled up the score on Oregon with FOUR turnovers (4-1 margin). That is insane.
3:49 you missed an important storyline of the Walk on that was friends with Zek that self deleted before the ❌ichigan game
Cardale Jones = the best
This was definitely the best run in the playoff era and maybe ever until this year if they can complete the 2024/25 season with a Title.
Tennessee S. E. C.
Oregon Big10 champs
Texas S. E. C.
Notre Dame 13-1 independent
I haven’t seen a 4 game stretch better by an Ohio State team.
Bosa using the Penn St RB to sack the QB to end the game....that was unbelievable
I was at that national cha,p game. one of the best experiences of my life. In my opinion the controversy should be letting FSU in over TCU.
Elliot 85 yard touchdown run
Calling OSU a Cinderella team is wild.
you clearly don’t know what happened that year, they lost to virginia tech early on, braxton went down, and they werent supposed to be there. they weren’t supposed to beat bama with a 3rd string and weren’t supposed to beat oregon either
tough early loss against VT, Kosta Karageorge killing himself, clawing into the playoffs, 3rd string QB, taking down all 3 heisman finalists, downing the #1 team in round 1 how is that not a cinderella run?
Cardale "I didn't come here to play school" Jones
4: Ohio State in the championship against Oregon
12: Ohio State in the Rose Bowl against Oregon
For sure the greatest cfp run ever. And the buckeyes have a chance to actually have a greater one this year lol
The fan getting Body Slammed at the UC game
This Buckeye team prevailed through all kinds of adversity. Not forgetting the death of their teammate, Kosta Karageorge. RIP, sir.
The Buckeyes saved college football with that win in 2014. A decade later. The Buckeyes again, show the playoff expansion is the right choice.
Had there been a 12-team playoff then, I would have liked Ohio State's chances to win it back-to-back.
urban meyer looks like the animated nickelodeon character, doug
I always say that part of Jones' success was that no one had any film on him. I'll take it, happy we won, just sayin' 😊
Buckeye fan here also 2025 is the year😮😅
Ohio state owns Oregon
85 yards through the heart of the South
Steve Miller is my cousin.... I went crazy when he caught that Pick 6
Only game i went to that year was the VT game.....lol
He was not a NFL caliber QB. No matter when he came out.
@@eudymaverickmentor Yes he was. Strong arm, accurate passer, read defenses, and could run when needed.
Football is a team sport and the quality of a team is more important than the ability of the quarterback.
Lets not forget Kosta Karageorge who went missing right before the Michigan game and unfortunately had committed suicide
My favorite moment is when they beat the cincinnati bearcats that season.
Cardale Jones Cardale Jones Cardale Jones
Calling any Ohio State team a Cinderella is crazy work.
Did the team have its doubters, of course. Just because many had no faith in them, doesn’t make them a Cinderella, imo.
OSU was selected because the CFP committee thought bama would have a sure in opportunity to the natty. They thought wrong!
It’s crazy Dey let in osu wit a 3rd string but not fsu wen dey lost there 1st string😂😂
Did you see how they performed in the Big Ten championship with said third string
When SilverBullitts beat bama and Oregon that was Historical and funny nobody gave them a chance GOBUCKS
Yes, the Inaugural CFP was The Best. Imagine a repeat next week? (Jan 20, 2025! You just can’t fight a hungry lion. The won’t stop until they get the championship! 🎉
Cardale! Cardale! Cardale!
Winning a championship with a third string quarterback with no game experience? What would even come close to that?
Lineman is not the same as QB, but how about being down 3 starting linemen, 2 of them All Americans, and one the Rimington Award winner. Maybe Justin Frye is a whole lot better than we give him credit for. Now if only the 4 & 5 star OL recruits could see that.
Ohio state buckeye was a Cinderella team? You must be smoking something
That year it should’ve been: Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State, and Baylor (since they beat TCU)
Florida State should’ve never been in and were struggling all year
TCU was dominant but losing to Baylor hurts them, otherwise, they would’ve been in over Ohio State
FSU was undefeated and the defending champs though.
Everyone loves “head to head” until it comes to Baylor vs TCU. I never hear anyone argue it should be Baylor. Always TCU over OSU. Also I think FSU should’ve been left out. They had a worse regular season than the 2023 team that was left out
They were never gonna leave the unbeaten defending national champs out lol.
Not the same team at all and ball knowers know that. Committee is way too PC for my liking. Ball dont lie. 59-20 dont lie
@@RadicallyOptimistic Oh I know, but at the time, there is no good justification to leave them out. Even now there isn't lol.
Yeah it was so obvious all season they didn't really belong. But they still had Jameis and an undefeated defending champ wasn't going to be left out.
They'd just be another one of the bye teams that got blown TF out of the playoffs this year in a 12 team format
O-H-I-O
12guage should have been a starter not 3rd string
Over Braxton, the 2 time Silver Football Award winner as the Big Ten's MVP? Over JT, OSU's all time winningest QB? Cardale is the stuff of which legends are made, and his performances in those 3 games were magnificent. He answered the call, absolutely. But I have to trust the coaches who see the players every day as a better judge of who should be starting and who should be backup. Now, if you want to discuss the next year, when Urban had an impossible dilemma as to who to start, and totally fumbled it by NOT making a decision and then sticking to it....
Facts
Virginia tech the real national champions
the #4 ranked OHIO STATE team is NOT a cinderella. Doesnt matter who the quarterback is. Youre embarassing
12-1 and #5 in the country big ten title, is not a Cinderella team LOL.
Then they benched him in 2015 for JT and we lost to MSU. Cardale was better for that team against better teams I think.
@@baractusobamiuscaesar5540JT did not have the arm or size as much though. Better runner and maybe little more accurate, but Jones probably had more potential.
