Setting up the Futaba GYA553 Gyro on T16IZ

- Due to the feedback on my video explaining how to setup the GYA553 Gyro on the T18SZ I have filmed a new video using the T16IZ. The T16IZ has a new Gyro Settings menu option that allows you to do ALL of the configuration directly from the transmitter. However you must plug a lead into the PBOX port on the gyro and connect it directly to your Transmitter or you will be unable to change the settings. I'm not an expert, this is the first gyro I have every used; hopefully it will help someone.

Here's the video to setting up the Futaba GYA553 Gyro on T18SZ - ua-cam.com/video/8zJ3dGlFKMo/v-deo.html
Matt I was able to make it Work and I was able to do everything in the radio Thank you for answering thank you for all your videos. They have been a great help.
Fantastic!
Great video! Tried to set it up with older video & gave up. This was easy peesy 👍👍👍👍 On my transmitter on the screen where the gyro is the settings was on screen 2. Wasn’t a big deal once I found it.
Amazing, so glad I’ve managed to help somebody. Yeah, the menu system on the Futaba is dynamic and can change depending on what you have selected for wing type, I believe. Probably why your “gyro settings” was on a second page. Glad you got it working. Thanks for watching. 👍🏽
Hi, I want to thank you for all your videos. I have been very helpful. I do have a one question I need to reverse the elevator, but when I go into the Gyro settings, it does not allow me to do you have any suggestions? Thank you very much
Is the option disabled? Or do you not see the option?
Yes, I see the option. Thank you very much for your help. Your videos are very helpful.
Great video. Did you do a video on setting up the gain on a dial so it’s adjustable during flight?
I haven’t yet but it is on my list to do!
Thank you for the video. It really helped me with my set my up of this s gyro
Awesome! That’s great to know.
Hi
Thank you for your video! It is of great help indeed!
Regarding dual rates, can I set up it normally on the radio, or with the gyro?
You’re welcome, thanks for watching.
Yes you can setup dual rates normally via the TX. I fly with 3 flight conditions which adjust all the rates. Works fine.
Awesome!!! Great content!! Well Done!! Thank You!!
Thank you. Hope it helped.
Hi Matt, I’ve been using the Gyro on a 16IZ with pretty much the same set up as you’ve demonstrated and it works just fine.
However, I’m curious on the gain setup option using either a three way switch or dial switch (C1-C5). Can you please shine some light on how to use this and why it could be useful? Maybe another scenario to make flying more beneficial or end in disaster 🤔
Hi. I’ve not yet setup the gain option to a switch or dial. I guess it would be useful to have it on a dial initially to work out how much gain you need/want. I can’t see why you would leave it permanently configured to a switch or a dial. I might be missing something.
I’m going to be putting one in another plane soon. I’ll record the install and also cover this as well.
I agree with you putting it on a dial switch rather than a toggle. I suppose they are treating it like a flight condition setup with off Normal & AVCS. It’s not so clear on the instructions which is why I’ll wait for your follow-up. Thanks for the swift response 👍🏼
Thanks for video, I was about to sell gyro. So it's ok to set endpoints in TX (ie elevators at 75% throws) or do you set this in gyro settings?
Also on other gyros on my jets I have the settings connected to flight modes so I can have my gyro gain on landing. Is that an issue?
Hi Michael, yes to both. You set your endpoints on the TX. However when you try the gyro on the ground you will notice you’re getting more movement than expected. I would therefore recommend setting your model up without the gyro first, then adding the gyro. I’m not sure why it behaves like this but seams fine in the air.
You should be able to adjust settings via flight modes. I’ve not actually tried that yet. I guess it may depend on the TX.
I’ve had quite a few people contact me due to struggling with the setup. I’ve also struggled myself which is why I created a few videos. I seam to learn something on each one!
I’ve been asked to create a video showing the recovery switch configuration. Which should level the aircraft when you activate it.
Two questions.
How do you know what axis each “gyro” is on the transmitter?
After you setup your SD switch for gyro off, normal gains, heading hold gains, did you have to connect the TX and RX together with the wire? Or does it put those settings in the gyro over the air?
Hi
Thanks for the questions. In regard to the axis unfortunately it’s not particularly clear on TX. In the video you can see the gyro gains are assigned to CH 6,7 and 8. It tells you in that screen if it is rudder, elevator or ailerons. This is in the SBUS section when you have the gyro plugged directly into the TX.
Then in functions you can see I assign those channels to GYRO, GYR2 and GYR3. That’s the only way you know unfortunately.
Re SD switch. No gyro settings are sent over the wire. You have to plug the less in each time, which is a shame.
Feel free to email me if you are getting stuck. Matt.Takhar AT gmail.com
Thank you, great explanation. So anytime you make a gain adjustment on the transmitter you need to connect the transmitter to the gyro with the wire?
I’ve not yet seen away to configuring the gains to a dial. I may be wrong but did just double check the manual again. It seams like an oversight if you can’t. I’ll have another read through later.
Hi Matt, Great review on this Gyro with the T-16IZ. Can you also do a follow up with how to do a software update on the GYA-553 using the Futaba CIU-3 USB Adapter?
Hi. I can look into that for you. I have two of these gyro’s now. I’ve not got hold of the adaptor. Give me a bit of time to sort. I’ll link it here when I’ve managed to do it.
That'll be good Matt. I currently use the GYA553 on it's defult settings with the 16IZ TX but was curious to know if buying the CIU-3 USB adapter is worth the investment.
On another note, I've just updated the T-16IZ to the latest update from Futaba (v5) which gives speech feedback on the switches for example Gear, Flap, Low rates, Nav Lights, etc. Excellent software update from Futaba which was long awaited !!
I think it was released Oct this year for those who do not know about it yet.
I’m going to create a video covering the software update and speech. Just trying to get hold of a TX 👍🏽
Looking forward to it 👍🏼
FYI. Just ordered the CIU-3 adaptor. Hopefully film the video at the weekend.
Can you tell me if this gyro can be used in a petrol engine?
Yes it should be fine. Just make sure it’s mounted securely
Can you still use all the channels on the rx? For example flap channel, air brakes etc? Thanks!
Hi, yes you can. Just plug them in directly to the RX and map using Functions on the TX 👍🏽
I notice that when you plug in the "program wire" to the back of transmitter your signal wire is going into ground side , the signal wire is at top on the back of the transmitter.? what we are experiencing is when the menu comes up for gyro config none of the items are highlighted only the green are is highlighted. hoping you can help with this?
Make sure the gyro is powered off when you plug it all in. The gyro/model will get its power from the TX. It should then enable all the settings. I'll be doing another video on this gyro soon (ish) and I'll make sure I cover this point.
I hooked up my GAY553 . The surfaces we’re going up & down at a very fast pace. Any ideas?
I’ve not seen that before. Are they moving by themselves or just super fast when you move the sticks?
If the gyro is not firmly mounted it will just shake itsself and the whole airplane kind of like feedback on a microphone. Try mounting it properly first.
Do you have the gyro fastened down?
@@jimmydewinter4573 I do on mine. Your right though they do need to be well attached.
Have they tried these gyros on turbine jets
Hi. I’ve not tried them but I’m sure others have. There is no reason why they shouldn’t work well.
Gyro needs v3.0 firmware otherwise you won't be able to change values via the transmitter
That’s good to know. I’ve done a video on updating the gyro firmware to 3.0, but not then tried it using this transmitter
