- I've created another video on setting up the Futaba GYA553 gyro as I've had a lot of questions and people asking for help. In this video I will take you through my configuration using a model with two aileron servos, one elevator, one rudder. However I came across a rather frustrating issue, as a result of trying to resolve it I lost all of my model settings!

✅ NEW TO MY CHANNEL? ✅
Hi, I'm Matt when I’m not busy working my 'day job' in tech I like to spend time doing my main hobby which is all things related to radio controlled aircraft.
On this channel you will find videos of plane builds, , model shows, flights, crashes (hopefully not many) and tutorials.
🔸Please subscribe to my channel if any of these interest you!🔸

Thanks for the help on this gyro set up it most certainly helped me out. Possibly a bit of an answer on you channel 5/6 issue on which is gyro and aileron2, I am using the T14SG that does have the gyro function built in the radio and with it the gyro does indeed go channel 5 and the aileron2 goes on channel 6. I think that the instructions were written for this radio and when they came out with the 16 and 18 version radio they made the software on those the opposite way around but didn’t change their instructions.
Thank you for the feedback. I also really appreciate the note regarding the channels. I suspect you’re right. It did really throw me for a while. Thanks for letting us all know. 👍🏽
Another Great Video Matt. Well done 👍
Thanks for watching!
Hello Matt, great video. Can you make a video setting up the GYA553 with the Futaba DLPH and the new T26SZ?
Hi. Thanks for the feedback. I don’t have a DLPH2 at the moment. The description on them does say it’s compatible with the GYA553, however I suspect it’s not straight forward. I’ll do some research and see if I can get one.
Nice video. It's very detailed and informative.
Thanks Mark. Glad you found it useful. 👍🏽
When setting aileron2 on channel 6 and you had no aileron movement did you check and make sure the end points were not set to zero on that channel.
Hi. I don’t recall checking this. However they shouldn’t have been at zero as it was a new setup. Good thought though.
Thanks for the videos they have been very helpful. You mentioned (and this has happened to me) that with low rates engaged and the gyro on you still get full deflection of the control surfaces. Have you found a way around that? Most likely I would not have that combination engaged except maybe on a gusty windy day trying to land? Related question, I noticed you have the 18SZ and 16IZ radios which do you prefer? I have the 16SZ and am frustrated with the lack of support Futaba is giving in relation to the updates the 16IZ(s) are getting.
Hi Mike. I prefer the 16IZ, mainly because it has extra support for the gyro and like you said it’s getting more updates. Other than that, there’s not much in it to be honest.
In regard to the gyro always giving full deflection. We found out it only does this when the model is on the ground. As soon as it’s in the air it’s fine and works well. I’m not really sure why this is but I’ve spoken to a few people now who have noticed the same.
Gotta love when things don't match the damn directions....it's y I never used gyros because when I first started I had a hard time getting a gyro to work then to work properly and gave up...and I just never went back to trying to use one... I do however fly freestyle fpv drones too and they have situations like this when programming a lot... enough to ruin your day and make you question life choices 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣 it sure did that! I had to walk away for a few hours and just leave it! lol
What size laser is that by chance? I always thought it was 50cc class but with one elevator I think I was wrong
It’s the 74” Laser. It’s typically my go to model as it’s the first decent model I purchased when getting back into the hobby 4 years ago.
I thought I would throw the gyro in it just for fun. I also had an issue recently setting up one for a friend so wanted to see if mine was the same lol
Do you have any knowledge of how to make the GYA553 gyro work with the Newer DLPH-2, the instructions say don’t plug anything into the Gyro
Hi, no sorry I don’t at the moment.
@@MattTakharRC thank you for your response. I now have another question. I noticed in the GYA553 there’s a section that says holding power. What normally should it be set at and what exactly is it holding? Is this something I should set up?
You’re welcome. The Holding Power is basically the “strength” that the gyro uses to apply the correction.
Mine is currently on the default setting.
I found this which describes it in more detail.
The Holding Power function on the Futaba GYA553 gyro is designed to enhance the stability and control of RC aircraft, particularly helicopters, by providing a more consistent and precise heading hold. Here are the key purposes and benefits of the Holding Power function:
Improved Heading Hold: The Holding Power function helps maintain the aircraft's heading more accurately, reducing the tendency to drift over time. This is especially beneficial during maneuvers where maintaining a precise heading is crucial.
Enhanced Stability: By maintaining a stronger hold on the aircraft's orientation, the function contributes to overall flight stability. This makes the aircraft easier to control and less prone to sudden, unexpected movements.
Better Performance in Wind: The Holding Power function helps counteract the effects of wind and other external forces that can cause the aircraft to deviate from its intended path. This results in smoother, more stable flight even in less than ideal weather conditions.
Consistency in Repeated Maneuvers: For pilots performing repetitive maneuvers or aerobatics, the Holding Power function ensures that the aircraft responds in a consistent manner each time, which is essential for precision flying and practice.
Customizable Control: The GYA553 allows pilots to adjust the Holding Power settings to suit their flying style and the specific characteristics of their aircraft. This customization helps optimize the gyro’s performance for different flight conditions and preferences.
Overall, the Holding Power function on the Futaba GYA553 gyro is an important feature for achieving precise control and stability in RC aircraft, enhancing both performance and pilot confidence.
Which port could flaps use please?
Any spare port. However you may have to change the mode on your receive to use them. Mode D in Futaba. I’m about to film a video showing how to do this.
thanks. BTW, should Aileron2 have J1on the control setting?@@MattTakharRC
@@cymaz100 yes it should. Make sure you set the trim to
Yes, it is a new Gyro and I got it working now. I had to go through the whole initiation because I have a T 10j Futaba transmitter now the only thing that I can’t get right is the elevator I can’t seem to reverse it when the nose goes down the elevator goes down also and when the nose goes up the elevator goes up do you have any way to doing it?
Yes you will need to set the reverse for the elevator by going through the gyro menu. I’ve done this on mine. You will need to use the two tiny buttons on the gyro to access the menu. The paper instructions that come with the gyro show you how to get into the menu and access the reverse settings
Isn't that your imac plane? No gyro in imac in america.. idk bout the uk
Nope. None of my bigger stuff has gyros. I’ve still not flown IMAC as there’s only been two comps this year. Might have to be a goal for next year. Although I fancy learning how to rifle roll next 🤔
Is it possible to change the gyro gain while flying? Can I set the gyro gain channel on one of the potentiometers and fine-tune the gain while flying?
Yes you should be able to do that. I've not tried it myself but will try it (and film) next time round.
Hi, I have the same gyro And I was wondering if you could help me when I turn the dryer on the data as a solid red light I can’t get a Gyro to work please help
Hi. I’ve never seen that before. Is it plugged into the RX correctly? Was it a new gyro when you first tried it?
So, what you did; changing the wing type will erase everything, because now you are using 2 channels 2 servos to control each aileron individually, a totally different config.. To be able to make ch5 ch6 as per gyro manual, you have to move your AILERONS SERVOS to the right channel port on the Rx. that should solve the problem. hope I explained myself well enough. English is not my language.
Thanks. Yes understanding why changing Wing Type erases everything. Shame there isn't a better warning message though.
You can actually map you aileron channels in the Functions menu to save moving them to the same physical port - I think!
