Making an update here to address a handful of comments that I have been receiving on this video. What I am showing you in this video is specifically a workaround for the DJI Mini 4, DJI Air 3/3s, and ANY DJI Mavic 3/Classic/Pro/Cine line. If you own a DJI Mini SE/2/3/3 Pro or DJI Air 2/2s or Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom, then use software like Litchi/ Drone Deploy/ Drone Link/ Map Pilot Pro. These other options are either free or have a 1 time cost. There are no "lies" in this video, it is specifically aimed towards the newer DJI drones that have released that do not have compatibility with the other software that I just mentioned. I hope this clears up any confusion.
I have a DJI mini 4 drone with RC2 controller and I could not get the route map to load into my controller. I could not find a way to exit the DJI application, the icons you show in the video are not there on my unit, and no back button, I tried them all. I also tried to hook the controller up directly to a computer via USB-C as suggested by some and that does not work either. Any ideas on the RC2 controller to make this all work?
Actually there is no need to do a flight to get the basic waypoint mission (at least for the RC2 controller): 1) turn on the controller (no need to start your drone) 2) click on „connection guide“ 3) click on „camera view“ and from there just hit the waypoint mission symbol on the left side. Now change to the map view, click on two random spots on the map, and save your waypoint mission - that‘s it!. Another important thing: in your case you only have one waypoint mission (the one that you created). after a while you may have multiple waypoint missions, and that‘s the part where it get‘s tricky: now you have multiple folder with cryptic names in the waypoint folder, no reference to the name you gave for your waypoint mission! How to find the correct folder from here? Just check the creation date, and then you have it! Hope this helps for the people new to this process (I did this process multiple times, after a while you get used to deal with this strange folder structure 😉 )
@ no, he is actually getting out flying his drone, marking two spots to create his waypoint mission. The way I do it: sitting in my living room, turning on the controller (and only the controller, NOT the drone), and create the basic waypoint mission with the controller. No need to fly your drone to get this done
I have a mini 3 (not pro) with its rc (idk which on is it but it has its own screen), I can't find the "waypoints" item or button, anywhere, I've been searching it for days and can't find it. Could it be possible the remote is not the original or something?
Yes, you can even create entire waypoint missions this way before you even go out and turn on your drone. Then you just refine the missions when you actually fly them. Saves both time and battery.
A little tip I learnt using a free trail of drone deploy, when the trial runs out it’s only a restriction from imagine processing and on. You can still use the app functionality to plot the flight path, perform the flight path and capture the images, then You can use the images in reality capture.
Thanks. One thing - you can click on the first waypoint and tell it to start taking photos - that way you don't have to remember to press the start capture.
So... I want to weigh in... The flight mission plan site works very well. Highly recommend investing in the very small monthly fee to access more features and controls for your mission plan creation. I tested it. It does much of the same thing that Drone Deploy does except a bit more intuitive. Getting the mission to your controller is a bit more work, but once you get it there the mission is pretty easy. Once you've completed your mission you now need to find a good map generator.. This is significant because it's a viable way of getting around DJI's refusing to release the SDK for the Mavic 3 non enterprise drones..
Connecting the RC2 via USB-C to your computer will shortcut few steps. You can first go into the waypoint folder of the RC2 and copy the filename, you rename the one on your local drive, then copy and paste (override) your renamed .kmz file on the original controller's folder
With the RC-2 remote controller, I couldn’t display the home screen like I can on the MAVIC remote controller, so I’ll try connecting a USB cable to see if that works.
@@AIR3_AVIATOR Did it work for you? I am having trouble displaying the home screen as well. I also connected my RC-2 controller to my macbook pro but i don't see anything happening. My controller only chargers the battery.

DJI MINI 4 PRO + RC2 - I am struggling to locate the waypoint folder on the RC2 file browser as this only shows the media library. When going over Settings/Storage the only accesible files are again from the media libraries but not Internal Storage. Without accessing the internal storage I cannot update the waypoints and initiate the planned flight from the KMZ generated on the waypointmap mission editor. My RC2 is latest update. Any thought on bypassing the situation?
I used to love using the Drone Harmony app with my Mavic Mini and Air2, the 3d models I could make were crazy........Its a sad day when you can get more functinality out of a Mavic Mini has then a Mavic 3
Finally, an all-in-one video describing the process. Thank you! One question, if the ground is not level, will the Capturing Reality software deal with that? For example, I set the altitude to 180 ft above the highest point of a housing development. The lower edge of the development is about 45 feet lower than that. Will the software still render a proportional 2D map?
Since I do not a response from the OP, I will tell you how I overcome this concern. You lose a little autonomy, because you have to monitor the flight a bit more. As the battery is getting closer 12%-15% you will need to know which waypoint your on. You have 2 options... 1. If your able to land the drone in the area your mapping and have easy access to that spot. 2. RTH and swap batteries, this will take more time away from actual mapping. Once back in the air, select the waypoint map and then select the waypoint to start from. It does not need to be the first waypoint. You will end up with some duplicate photos, but the rendering software will not be affected by it.
Dylan, I've appreciated your work for so long that I subscribed long ago...but I'm envious because so many people are giddy over this and I'm not. I'll sleep on it and give another shot tomorrow... Phenomenal sharing my guy!!!
If you hook up controller directly to a laptop, I believe you'll be able to copy over (and change name) from sd card to internal storage in the file explorer. Should be much easier.

OK, I've found the workaround for the RC2 not showing access to the files. I have a mac, so I use Android File Transfer, a free app, to get access to the files. You have to open the app up while the RC2 is connected to the mac. Navigate to the waypoint mission folder as Dylan showed. Drag and drop your new KMZ file INTO the dummy waypoint folder. It’s just cresting a DJI KMZ file, and it’s very limited but good for people to know. Map Pilot Pro can do this much much easier for the Mavic 3 Pro, Classic, Air 3, Air 3S and Mini 4. All you do is set to your aircraft in the settings whch will be for export only. I use my iPad to set it up and once you save it the map will be automatically placed in the DJI Fly app. There is no fussing to transfer the file or other stuff to get it into the Wayline Folder. I set up the plan on my iPad and it’s very, very easy. Enjoy.
What happens if the drone runs low on battery before completing the mission? For example, filming a 50+ acre farm. Will it RTH and start where it left off after inserting a new battery? Do you know if the mission needs to be broken into smaller sections?
that is a great question! I witnessed a crop duster do this - after a battery change the drone would go pack and continue spraying from where it left off.
I have a Air3S, bought dec ´24 with a RC2, In the slide down menu there´s only the hexagon symbol to press. BUT if you connect your RC2 direct to the PC with a usb cable, you´re able to to do same as explained in the video.
Interestingly my RC2 controller will not allow me to access the files folder. Can't even access the home screen for the Android OS. Looks like DJI may have locked this one down. I just updated the firmware before trying this so I am wondering if that is why it is different.
Brilliant video... I have a Mini 4 pro with the RC2 which always boots the DJI fly app. How do I get out.of that to the Android system behind it or should I pair my Mini 4 Pro to a RC -N1?
Wow! This is awesome! Thanks bro! Wish I knew about this before I came back from my holidays! This would have been great to capture some of the beach houses and bars! Liked & Subscribed! 🤘
Thanks for this info. I can't find a way to exit the dji fly app on the RC2. There's no home button, and I can't force stop the app because there's no "app management" menu in settings. Anyone have suggestions?

How about a video on who uses the result of these maps...construction firms, developers, etc. And how do they use it, how do you market to them and make yourself known to them, etc.
I work for a drone survey company, among other things we make high resolution terrain maps for mining companies so they can work out volumes of rock above mineral ore bodies, this determines whether the mine will be open pit or underground tunnels.
@@killerjr1911 DJI can if you allow it, but it depends on how your system is set up, we use mainly large single rotor helicopters for survey they don't connect to the internet at all they use our own inhouse built autopilot system but we also use a couple of DJI drones a huge Flycart for heavy payload surveys and a Matrice for lidar, but we don't connect them to the internet and allow the data to be uploaded to the DJI server. But there is fairly high resolution (5m pixel size) satellite terrain data available from various companies for the whole world anyway, you can just download it, for instance the Japan Space agency (JAXA) has satellite terrain data of the entire planet available for download, 30m resolution is free to download, 5m you have to pay for, and there are various other companies providing similar products.
If I were to buy a drone for this purpose (or a 3D model rather) how would you go about needing to replace a battery through a flight if need be? I’m interested in getting a 3D model of 4-5 acres of land with ~80 feet of elevation change, so should I be concerned of the change in workflow if a battery change is needed? Would that impact the photos/photo-taking process/outcome?
Since I do not see a response from the OP, I will tell you how I overcome this concern. You lose a little autonomy, because you have to monitor the flight a bit more. What's the approximate maximum size of map that can be mapped using a battery in a Air 3S? Can the drone speed be doubled or tripled in order to cover more ground?
Yes, what he said! I had so much hope of finally being able to load a waypoint mission created externally but I stalled at this point. No access to files on the RC2 :(
been using my phantom 4pro for about 6 years. as of last week it is now out of commission, looking at the DJI Air 3 Fly More Combo or mini 4 pro, will it give me comparible 2D maps, also if I am use to using my ipad and using maps made easy, never used a controller with screen, and out of the 2 drones mentioned, your opinion. Thanks agian...
Having a hard time moving my kmz files into my rc2 controller as the menu/directories/folder structure are different to that of the Smart Controller. When I pull down the from the top to get out of the DJI Fly app and click on the top right corner icon and open the home screen I do not see a File icon - I do see a Storage icon which has an Internal storage and portable storage (my sdcard) and when I open it I only see the size and usage - I do not see the the kmz files that I copied to. So I'm stuck - can't go any further. What I'm I missing. Thanks!
Managed to upload the mapping images onto Reality Capture. having problems with it displaying the 3d image. Using windows 11 and it comes with the following message "Your CUDA driver version 0 is not supported by the CUDA runtime. Please update your NVIDIA display driver to the latest version" Any advice on how to deal with this would be greatly appreciated.
@BadwolfFPV Yeah, I bought Litchi and it's great. Haven't done the waypoints yet, but next season I will as that's what I got it for. My only major wish: That I could program it to auto land, wait for a predetermined time, then take-off again to a set altitude and broadcast and reconnect. That would rock. Not to mention being useful.
@@DylanGorman What do you mean they shouldn't? I agree they should leave it but they absolutely can. It's a very easy thing to patch, they literally just need a metadata file to store some kind of calculation from the checkpoints file, like distance or even how many waypoints there are. So don't be surprised if this is patched within the next set of updates.
@@simonwesterlund1 This tool has been availble for over 6 months, which is why I eluded to saying that it they shouldn't remove it. I don't control what DJI does or doesn't do with their own software unfortunately.
I have designed a flight over a 101 acre site to produce and ortho using the parameters you stated in this video. It is telling me the flight time will take over 6 hours. Does this sound correct?
I have a mini 4 pro . I can seem to get into the file system of the RC2 controller . I can see the SD card and new file to upload but can't seem to get to the area to load it into ???
hello im planing on using this, so amazing... I was wondering if I have a longer Mission that may require a change the battery of drone is there a way to continue the mission where it left off? should I do two separate waypoint missions? Thanks for this
That might be a question for the software that stitches the images together. It might support multiple folders or a way to combine or rename images into one folder. Since it’s only looking at images I’m guessing it’s just stitching them together and using the parallax differences to come up with the 3D interpretation.
These tools do not support interrupting / resuming missions w/battery changes; so you'll have to plan multiple missions to get the coverage then stitch together the resulting images. The stitcher doesn't really care how the images were acquired. If you regularly need missions of that length you're probably in the territory of more purpose-specific drones that have software that can handle multi-stage missions.
How did you fix the holes that appeared on the roof in the 3D model? I am generating a cesium model and I also get those holes for white color objects.
If I already use one of the 3rd party softwares for other drones I have can I just use one to export the kmz and do the same process of tricking the Dji fly app?
This is an AWESOME video. Very detailed and informative. I have a M3 w/Smart Controller and I’m a computer guy, so your step-by-step was on copying a file is spot on for me. Thanks and you have a new subscriber!
Do you have a step by step in writing on how to download and copy paste the file as I am having trouble following, does it work the same with the RC2 controller with mini 4 pro or only with the smart controllers?
Hi, thanks a lot for the video! I’m now trying to import the kmz file to the RC-N2 from my iPhone. But I don’t get where you find the file with the letters (08:58 minute)… Thanks
Awesome video, that's so cool! So to get nice 3d model all I would need to do is change the camera angle to -45'? Any other settings that need adjusting?
I have a DJI Mavic 3 CINE do you know a 3rd party app that I can do mapping speciffically with this drone? I am having issues finding one that works. thanks

Is there an another program similar to Reality Capture that works with the Apple Mac Book computers that can be used to generate the free 3D renderings? Thanks
Ive done this before by just flying the "waypoints" manually. I.e. just flew round in a grid spamming the shutter button. My overlap probably wasnt perfect but the image that it pieced together after was pretty decent
The RC 2 Controller does not seem to have that home button feature anymore, it wont let you go into the main operating system anymore, Im looking for a work around, if anyone knows please message me, I really want to get the automated mapping part of next stage of drone piloting.
Thank you Dylan...I have been looking for a free way to do this. Question - How do you host the generated maps for viewing on a website or to share with clients?
Hello, thanks for the video. I just want to know if you have tried doing a mission where the drone lost connection to the RC and encountered an obstacle. Did it avoid the obstacle or stay hovering? If the drone stayed hovering, did it remain that way until the battery was low and needed to return home?
I have an old DJI 3 which seems to be near the end of its life and did this manually. What a pain, especially when it keeps losing connection and returning home. This is waaaay better. But my question-- how is the connection on the Mavic, and how far away does it let you get? If you lose signal, does it continue the waypoint mission?
Plug the controller into your PC with the USB-C cable, and _make sure the controller is turned on._ Your PC should recognize it and assign a drive location that you can access with your favorite file manager. My path is something like: This PC\DJI RC 2\Internal shared storage\Android\data\dji.go.v5\files\waypoint.
Maybe you could have mentioned the limitations of this approach, in particular the maximum number of waypoints (which forces you to only have each line edge, leading to the weird wavy flight). Also, those drones don't have a global shutter, so it's nice to remember that you'll have rolling shutter effects that may or may not be an issue depending on cases.
You suggest dronelink wont work with low end drones, works fine with my mini-2. Use it to take a series of shots, then load them all into WebODM, let the system crunch numbers for a while, and voila, really nice set of informative maps of the area we flew.
Seems DJI patched the Mini 4 Pro, against this function on the RC2 controller today. I am not able to get a home button when pulling down on screen. However, I can get to a File Manager to edit folder
im all in on that idea to start a business with this and I am wondering what PC/laptop would be suitable for those tasks? thx for the answer in advance

I have a Air3S, bought dec ´24 with a RC2, In the slide down menu there´s only the hexagon symbol to press. BUT if you connect your RC2 direct to the PC with a usb cable, you´re able to to do same as explained in the video.
I am connecting my usb cable to my mac but it is not recognizing the controller
@@garrettblackwell593 same here! I'm going to try a Windows PC and see if I have better luck!
You earned a sub, thank you.
I second this question

@@paulweston8184I don't have a home screen button
I am still trying to figure this out!
Thanks for posting this! that was super helpful!
That’s amazing I e got the air3s and wanted to do mapping but couldnt afford a more expensive drone I’ll be trying this thanks a lot 💪😎
Hello, hope you are doing great. Did you try it? Did it work? Thanks for your help.
solved a big problem for me!!! thank you.
Wow! This is awesome! Thanks bro! Wish I knew about this before I came back from my holidays! This would have been great to capture some of the beach houses and bars!

Well now you know! You should try it out in the future
Could this software work for a mini 3 pro? Or is there a limitation for that generation of drone?
Except for Mini 4, the Mini series drone do not support waypoint flying.
@@CodyCha you can create waypoints in mini 3 pro
@@Chloroo M3P only uses waypoints for Hyperlapse :(
Thanks for this info.
I can't find a way to exit the dji fly app on the RC2. There's no home button, and I can't force stop the app because there's no "app management" menu in settings. Anyone have suggestions?
Connecting the RC2 via USB-C to your computer will shortcut few steps. You can first go into the waypoint folder of the RC2 and copy the filename, you rename the one on your local drive, then copy and paste (override) your renamed .kmz file on the original controller's folder
@@davidebrambilla6566 where do I find this folder? Im plugged into the controller and all I see is the sd card and a bunch of flighlogs
Am I the only one suspicious of a Chinese drone company collecting geographical data?

Looks so easy, Great video Thanks man.
@ I sincerely appreciate the response! Thank you!
What would you send to the client? What software do they need to use it and take measurements etc off it?
What's the approximate maximum size of map that can be mapped using a battery in a Air 3S? Can the drone speed be doubled or tripled in order to cover more ground?
My RC 2 does not have a home button in android.
Thanks!
That is where I ended my first attempt as well.
Does this work with a DJI mini-2?
How can you make it consumable/shareable? Format and methods.
Do us Mini 2 SE owners have any similar opportunities to use waypoints and to make similar models?
I would also like to know the answer to this question
No. Only the newer drones which support the DJI Waypoints in the Fly app.
Do you think the DJI Flip will get compatibility with the Jay's app?
Managed to upload the mapping images onto Reality Capture. having problems with it displaying the 3d image. Using windows 11 and it comes with the following message "Your CUDA driver version 0 is not supported by the CUDA runtime. Please update your NVIDIA display driver to the latest version" Any advice on how to deal with this would be greatly appreciated.
Does anything work with the 3se mini?
RC2, when I try to enter android system. It won't let me view any files. Only displays how much storage is left..
Awesome! Hopefully DJI doesnt patch the work around, super excited to try this today
They shouldn’t so your all good to go!
theres litchi if they do, if your model is supported
@BadwolfFPV Yeah, I bought Litchi and it's great. Haven't done the waypoints yet, but next season I will as that's what I got it for.
My only major wish:
That I could program it to auto land, wait for a predetermined time, then take-off again to a set altitude and broadcast and reconnect.

Can you make this with a set up that is not GPS taged . for ex if its done indoors ? lets say on a factory floor , and use it in RealityCapture
Thank you for making this and pointing me in game 👍🏻🥳
Incredible! Thanx for this video .

Great video! Thanks... I love learning new things. New sub!
What speed do you lock your drone at since the consumer drones have rolling shutter ?
Do you have a step by step in writing on how to download and copy paste the file as I am having trouble following, does it work the same with the RC2 controller with mini 4 pro or only with the smart controllers?
Hi, thanks a lot for the video! I’m now trying to import the kmz file to the RC-N2 from my iPhone. But I don’t get where you find the file with the letters (08:58 minute)… Thanks
Thanks Dylan. I’m grateful for you sharing this knowledge. Lots of information. I look forward to having the time to check it out.
Awesome video, that's so cool! So to get nice 3d model all I would need to do is change the camera angle to -45'? Any other settings that need adjusting?
Is there any alternative to reality capture? I have a laptop that doesn’t have a nvidia gpu.

Is there an another program similar to Reality Capture that works with the Apple Mac Book computers that can be used to generate the free 3D renderings? Thanks
Same question here - I have OSX and Linux machines, no windows…. GREAT VIDEO!!
Ive done this before by just flying the "waypoints" manually. I.e. just flew round in a grid spamming the shutter button. My overlap probably wasnt perfect but the image that it pieced together after was pretty decent
How do I access the main home screen on the RC2?
The RC 2 Controller does not seem to have that home button feature anymore, it wont let you go into the main operating system anymore, Im looking for a work around, if anyone knows please message me, I really want to get the automated mapping part of next stage of drone piloting.
Thank you Dylan...I have been looking for a free way to do this.
Question - How do you host the generated maps for viewing on a website or to share with clients?
Perfect! Just ordered an Air 3s and this popped up in my feed!
Hello, thanks for the video. I just want to know if you have tried doing a mission where the drone lost connection to the RC and encountered an obstacle. Did it avoid the obstacle or stay hovering? If the drone stayed hovering, did it remain that way until the battery was low and needed to return home?
What abou taking an additional set of pictures but with gimbal at -45°? Or maybe less inclination?
im flying my drone a mavic 3 classic with my smartphone, what is the process to upload the flight plan
This was excellent! I will try this later in the week on my DJI AIR 3. I will let you know my results. Much appreciated, safe flights!
Unable to see internal storage on RC2, mini 4 pro how to view it
same here. RC2 with air3. @dylongorman, please show us how.
I’m glad I kept my Mavic Pro.
Me too.
10:26 how do you restore original dji file if you want to use waypoints on controller?
You suggest dronelink wont work with low end drones, works fine with my mini-2. Use it to take a series of shots, then load them all into WebODM, let the system crunch numbers for a while, and voila, really nice set of informative maps of the area we flew.
he said the opposite.
Seems DJI patched the Mini 4 Pro, against this function on the RC2 controller today. I am not able to get a home button when pulling down on screen. However, I can get to a File Manager to edit folder
GREAT Video! Well produced.
im all in on that idea to start a business with this and I am wondering what PC/laptop would be suitable for those tasks? thx for the answer in advance
this doesnt work on DJ RC (RM 330). Cant access the file browser (the home icon is missing)
The files you end up, are they useful or usable to architects, landscape architects, planners, etc? Or are they just cool. Many thanks for the tutorial!
They can be! You just need more data which can be gathered manually or with more overlap on the mission planning
Will this work with the DJI Mavic Pro?
