What do you do in those moments? You shut the f up, you pay attention and execute the game plan.
No coach gonna be mad at players if they execute his plan and it doesn´t work.
To understand European coaches you need to understand European basketball first. There are less games in a season so every game matters. There is less space on the court and less time on the clock, also differenet defensive rules like no 3 sec in the paint on D, hand checking is still a common thing. Also full court ball pressure is common in Europe and in combination with less space it creates way more half court offense, so the coaches rely way more on Xs and Os then in the NBA. Fundamentals, timing, moving w/o a ball, ball movement is way more important than in the NBA.
    Hard Coaching = LOVE
When a coach takes it easy on you, he is setting you up for a hard time in life ahead
Don´t take the coach for granted that is constantly holding you accountable
Most coaches aren´t out to "get you", they´re out to "get you" to where you wanna be one day
There is a reason your coach is on you about being early, staying late, studying, doing extra,
taking care of your body and being a good person.
It´s because your coach loves you.
They see what you could be one day.
And if you can´t see that hard coaching is love, you´re blind
But some of those coaches are out of their minds. Yell what you want but don´t touch the players.

i remember as a 12 yo kid, we all found normal coaches yelling and cursing at us both during official competitions, games or even practice, you re here for the team and if the boss is unhappy, you just stare down and answer "yes sir" or "yes madame" and give your life on the next play ...there were also kinda collective punishement like end of practice free throws, we in line, one shot each, if someone misses everybody makes 20 push ups, nobody gets home until we all score in row ...i recall too once waving my finger after like my 7th block of the game, my coach ( a lady) got me out on the bench and gave me the bust-up of a lifetime in front of everybody ...in europe we re taught solid basics (like remembering over 20 offensive systems and almost the same amount of defensive systems at 14) but most of all respect and humility, no way to be as cocky as some very young players you have in america ...
it was france in the 90's and i know for sure we were soft compared to other european countries, especially east block ones

What you need to understand is that no player is greater than the team in Europe. And the coach is the head of the team. If players would disrespect them, they wouldn't play, and the fans would always support the coach. But if they lose, they'd blame the coach the most. So it's all in order, unlike in NBA.

it doesn't matter if you're losing by 3, 10, 20 pts or even winning by 10 pts, if you're not focused on the game, if you don't follow the plan and if you're not playing defence, you're going to get yelled at. And in this european basketball culture (mostly balkan) you know not to take it too personally. Most of the times when a player is yelled at the most then he is the most loved or believed in player by the coach. Coaches are more like army generels rather than managers!

So, funfact about european basketball, the team's president and GM are 110% trusting the coach they sign, the coach gets to kick players off the team and he is the one asking for the right players to come to the team. The basketball here is so complex, coaches have a HUGE role in the game and a big responsibility. He is No1, the players respect their coaches a lot. Also they have so good relations between them and the coaches are the ones who make the players play good. If the team isn't playing as good as they are supposed to play, the coach is the 1st one to be kicked out and coaches and players know it very well. So, totally different shit.

You gusy in the US don't get it. Every game is WAR. The players in our teams are our brothers. We the fans travel with the team to away games and cheer even if we lose when they leave everything on the floor. If the players don't give everything every game, they get chewed out. Here in Europe it's not the player who tells what to do, who to sign. It's the head coach. Even the Euroleague MVP can be put on the bench if he fucks the game up. And nobody will blame or fire the coach.

Coach Ioannidis was an Icon. Whenever he would be heard during the games he was always cussing like a sailor hence the straight on commercials in that clip. He basically cussed the people in the stands because they were morons. Zeliko is the best coach in Europe and the most decorated with 9 EuroLeague cups and 64 titles in total with various teams in Europe. He might say stuff and cuss at his players but all they love him because he makes them better players in the end and many under him managed to get to NBA later. My daughter plays football (or soccer for my Americans) as a GoalKeeper and she knows that if later goes to professional she will hear bad language and maybe towards her and she knows to let that get over her head and not take it personally. Same goes for those 7 foot men.

As a person who passed through all young team selections in Serbia all I can say this is normal.
In Serbian/Yugoslavian school of basketball coach is like army drill instructor. Only person next to your father who can and have absolute right to treat you like this.
To yell and scream at you, even slap the sense back into you in some critical moments.
There is no individualism in our basketball cultrure, its not about grandizing your self like in NBA.. Everything is dedicated to team play and winning.
And when coach draft something on that board... You better treat it like holy book otherwise, prepare to be roasted right there at the spot.
And I do understand how confusing that is to Americans but 2 points I want to make...
    a) Coach is a fatherly figure on the court for us
    b) Doesnt matter how big your contract is, coach is ALWAYS ABOVE your ass. (Check how Nikola Jokic a max contracter and global superstar treats our national coach when playing in national team) Silent as a grave and with a "Yes Ser" when play is called.

The reason that he yelled was, If you're winning you hold the ball you don't take any gamble. Even if it's open the best shooters in the nba only shoot Around 50% It's a chance out of two. So there's a universe where he miss it they get the timeout and have a chance to get back in the game. If you hold it either they foul and then You get the two free throws and they get less time or else they don't foul and you win the game.

21:12 Yes, he is mad because too much time was left. Saras as a player won a game (that decided who went to the semi-final of the Euroleage) where his team trailed by 5 with 6 seconds to go. In this case the opponents could draw a foul, put the first FT in and deliberately miss the second to get a long rebound and shoot for 3.

Its just the passion about the game and all of that - fighting spirit and giving it your all no lalala happy merry land - I always remember very very early on, when our team of like 10 year olds got together, our coach asked us if we want to play for fun or to win, and what that would mean - and we all chose to play to win, and thats why he gave us that heat - so that we could get better etc. Great times.

in order to comment these reactions on these coaches you must live in europe and must understand what was happening at that moment you cannot just watch this out of context and expect to understand, its not easy to understand and take just reaction.

In the NBA, players and fans are just watching classic cheap theater. Your fans come in their expensive clothes with bow ties. Your players don't even know what basketball really is. But in Europe, basketball means war. Fans and players go to the match to fight. So, NBA is just a cheap show. Europe is a real battlefield.

not to say thay aren't good coaches but i don't think you're a great coach if the only thing you can do is yell at them when they are playing bad, i'm familiar with EU football coaches and they scream too and you got to rally the troops (what most were doing) but you canjust sub players off, set some tactical change/give some advice to make the players link better, ... nd some of them are really angry just to be angry x)

This is coming from position that they run movements on training milion times. Then you come to the game and you dont know where to go or what to do,or your team is losing and bed decisions are made and so on. So,before this yelling, in the same game, i can assure you that there was effort to say this also in nicer way. No response, players acting like kids,again...same thing. Then father breaks loose, shoot up and fuck you. I am speaking now you dont talk, i brake it down for you, we know my system works, and this is how you playing? Basically same how we people sometimes act with Gods rules. But speaking of coaches, this is where thay gat position to do this insults, because they have a system that can bring you title. One person needs to be in charge, and in Europe its not player. i would not respect any player coming to USA, even if he was MJ. Fuck you MJ, coach has the final word, that type of thing.
