Thank you SO MUCH for the tip on getting the window crank pin out with a cloth/rag. Every other video said you need a pick/tool and I don’t have one. I popped that pin out in 5 seconds thanks to you!
4:42 the white O on the right handside under that bolt is actually an access hole for reaching that bolt. Just remove and you get sight line on the bolt. Got driver side handle installed quickly by watching your video.
"What's going to be really hard is that far bolt on the inside near the lock set of the handle". You aren't kidding, brother! It took me nearly 90 minutes to get the darn thing back in! In my defense, I have big hands & fat fingers. Thank you for the tutorial.
@@SpaceCableTV Fantastic video! I got the exact same color car but in 98. Got it brand new those 26 years ago. I've got the simple 2.4 5 speed with almost 400,000 miles. Love this little truck I was going to get into it right now but since I found your video I know I have to order that part first.. do me a favor and can you explain the trick on removing that little black door triangle that you had to glue on? That would be some good info to know before I have to start gluing mine on. Thanks for the video👍🏼
8:00 That warning to go easy on using the door handles, get ever more important as winter temperatures get to and below freezing. It was refreshing listening to your concise and complete delivery! (five stars out of five)
A little spray lube on the actual latch and they'll go easy on themselves. A light pull with a pinky finger will pop the door open. Unlubed, as I found out, the cheap latch is hard to open the door. A spritz or 2 of Howe's Lubricator or PB Blaster is all it takes znd door pop open easier than when they were brand new 😊
My driver side was hanging on by one of the plastic hinges for a few years, after a heat wave it finally broke off completely. This is a great demonstration and plan on getting this fixed this weekend
Even though I've had to replaced the door handle on the driver's side of my 1998 Toyota Tacoma twice, its been awhile since the last time. Thanks for the refresher tutorial; it was perfect.
My overall assessment of your video.......absolutely outstanding! Your pace, tone, calmness, clear instructions that are very easy to follow. I very much appreciate your time. Tomorrow will be my turn to attempt this operation. I have shared your video to many of my family, friends, Soldiers, and fellow car owners that want to do their own repairs. 😉👍🏻🙏🏻✝️🇺🇸🙏🏻✝️🇺🇸
relax, calm down, be careful, take your time. . . That ain't no lie. Thanks for posting this video. 1999 Toyota Tacoma. 336,000 miles. Seatbelts suck. Got any suggestions for that? LOL
My $12 aftermarket exterior handles in mu 99 Tacoma wouldn't open the doors when I replaced them... Not until i speayed lube all over the door latches (which haven't seen lube in 25 years. This is 2024 and it's a 1-owner- me). Now they work better than the day I bought the truck from the dealer. Thanks fer the vid. Helped a lot. 👍
Thanks for the info, there's a much easier way to get the back bolt by taking the round circle of tape off the round hole and use an extension, that's what it's for then put the tape back on.
Thanks for this helpful upload. My door knob is now fixed after a few months of being broken and once getting locked out with truck, air conditioner, radio. running. Got lucky and my back door window was not latched properly. Saved me!!! ;)
great video I also bought after market replacements as Toyota want to charge me 170 per handle yes that is correct 170 per handle, its to bad you dont car about your truck as they are and awesome vehicle.
Used your instructions and advise. I was able to change my driver side handle 2004 Tacoma with your awesome detailed instructions thanks very happy with results
thanks for the video i wanted to refresh my memory how to replace door handle on my 2000 tacoma. i already replaced the driver side about few couple years ago. yesterday my passenger side broke luckily i still have the replacement bought as a pair from amazon. and also already have the tool to remove the window handle i had about over 20 years used to fixed other vehicle i had before.
After replacing the driver side exterior handle it operated stiffly, so I used spray lubricant on the inside and outside of the latch, which improved the action considerably and has provided easy operation for several years with the cheap aftermarket handle. Now it’s time to do the passenger side and I’ll do the same lubricating.
Good vid I need the lock part lost it around 6 months been using it like that my handle also broke but still works from under neath so I still have a sort of lock haha unless some one digs they’re finger under there and prys it open like I do and it takes some time to not feel the small pain that comes from it lol
I’m not sure what i did wrong but now when I try to lock the door with the key I cannot lock it. I can lock the door from the inside and then unlock it with the key but I cannot lock the door with the key. The locking mechanism seems to be in place and the correct rods are hooked up. From looking at it it appears the lock itself does not have enough travel to lift the rod up and lock the door. I’m not sure how to fix this problem. Any idea?
Unfortunately nothing is popping out to me. I used a third party handle and it has recently become harder for me to lift the door lock, sounds like a similar issue.
Thank you for taking the time to post this. Changed mine out this past weekend after watching. It was a bear getting the door handle screw in on the lock-set side!
My door handle is fine with 28yrs of service. However, I can't unlock the door from the outside. Leaves to just leave it open, instead of going through the passenger side. Any ideas? The little plastic piece from the lock set might be broke?
The lock doesn’t seat perfect with the aftermarket handle. I had to modify the handle a bit to get this to work. Hopefully you got it fixed already seeing as this comment is almost a year old lol
I had the same problem. It’s the after market handle that’s the problem. The locking mechanism seat doesn’t fit exactly as a Toyota handle. I just lock it from the inside now hahaha
Awe you didn't show us how you were show how you were gonna show us how you were screw, some screws, or glue in that piece (trianglular plastic piece) you broke, thanks this info, my 96 t-100 jus went to hell, first the handle drives side gave out then the door glass broke and the passanger jus broke, omg😭😭😭😭😭 if it's not one thing or another.🤢😲😰😢😵, Thanks for sharing this with me, I will use this to do my next week hopefully weather let's up.✌️👍
It hurts my soul when he says that he doesn't care about the truck. I love my Tacomas. There are holes over those second screws that make it much easier to access them. When you put the window crank back on, sit in the truck like you would be riding down the road. Find a spot that is comfortable and not hitting you in the knee and snap it back in there. Youn can put it back on in any direction.
The $90 part would last another 15-20 years are you really saving by spending $15 every year and you have to do all the work over again. Just get a Toyota handle and be done with it. The Cheap handles are junk

You are welcome brother.
About an hour with not so big hands, aftermarket handle did not want to hold lock so had to put that in after handle inside door.
Great video.

Just did mine for the second time referencing this video for my 1999 Tacoma. Went a lot smoother this time

The door handle had me stumped. I’ve never seen that before. Thanks for the video!!
I will be Doing it tommorow . Thanks broham! I personally bought OEM because I do not want to have to do it again..ever. Cheers
All the handles to my Tacoma finally broke lol thanks for the walkthrough you’re a good man 👍🏻
You can also get metal handles on amazon

Noticed that but the video got me through. Thanks!
this should be the pinned comment.

hell yeah bro thanx a bunch man this really really helped me a lot thanx again
Excellent instruction with calmness. lol. I did it! Thank you!
Really helpful, thanks 👍
Thank you so much for the info it helped me a lot on my new truck that just broke
I got the metal handle one, but I did reuse the original plastic part that hang on the metal wire.
There's an access hole on the door to get to the bolt by the lock cylinder off.
Thank you for taking the time to make this!
You're welcome Ben.
Awesome video
Thanks. Will give it a go!
Very helpful thank you
While I was in there I lubed lock and handle mechanism. Locks were hard to open
Thank you very much you’re very helpful
You are welcome.
It really helpfull!!! Thanks a lot !!
You're welcome, glad to help.
Can a door vapor barrier be bought somewhere?
Yours is in pieces so is it not critical?
I do care about it for my truck.
Thanks for the video it help me very much
My original driver's side door handle broke after 24 years. Just bought an original toyota handle for $100. Hopefully it will last 20+ years?
That's definitely the dream.
Next time buy one from o'reilly's. $25 lifetime warranty.

Ugh some how I can’t lock my door with the key from the outside minor inconvenience is gonna be left that way! Great video ima subscribe
I had the same problem. It’s the after market handle that’s the problem. The locking mechanism seat doesn’t fit exactly as a Toyota handle. I just lock it from the inside now hahaha
I had that problem.. I made a copy of my ignition key and by chance, I tried it in the bad door lock and it worked. You never know, I guess.
FYI, the horseshoe pin is actually called a circlip.
Ur wild bro
What do I do if I cannot open the door?
Use a slim jim to pop open the door handle. That'll work if your linkages are still working.
Thanks for skipping the most complicated part
I know right!
Tanks!
link for the part?
I bought off eBay a while ago, but I just checked on Amazon and if you search your model and year with "door handle," there are plenty to choose from.
This guy doesn’t really care about his truck and is okay with breaking parts. Which happened to me to.
It's all part of the game.

New door handle is $130.00 from the dealer
Go to a parts yard or try and find some locally through a wrecked 4 runner or Tacoma. Got all 4 oem door handles, parts and linkage for 30$
