This tutorial has likely saved me hundreds of dollars in repair fees. I really appreciate you sharing in such a detailed way how to repair this popular problem.
I’ve got a 2004 Tacoma and you helped me out years ago and now I’ve found this tutorial again (as I bought a cheap replacement handle and they don’t always last) and I’m so very thankful.
I’m about to start another replacement today.
    Thank you Jason!!!

Jason, just a massive thank you from Albuquerque, New Mexico, on the clear guide on how to do this. Being a pretty a non-mechanical, non-garage kind of guy, I followed your instructions step by step and things went terrific for me fixing the driver's side handle on my 2003 Tacoma. You taught me about my truck, and you helped me to save some money and gave me some confidence I could do some upkeep on my vehicle myself. You helped me tremendously. Much appreciation.

Great video! Extremely detailed. I really liked how you showed the use of the shop rag to remove the clip for the window handle clip. I didn’t know that clip was even there and would have spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get that handle off. This video saved me time and money. Thank you for your knowledge and for uploading this video.

You are awesome! Your patience and details and camera work allowed me at 67 and a woman to change my door handle. My truck is a 2000 so slightly different but close enough. Toyota awesome design and easy to work on. Dude you made me feel proud and not frustrated thru the whole process. Your precise explanations about the clips and screws and rag tip on the window handle were awesome. You are awesome!

My neighbor wanted me to replace her door handle to her 90's Tacoma. She brought the handle that she got from Advance Auto or one of the other auto places. They charged her $70 for the handle. I thought that was high but looking on Amazon I found it for $8. Yes, that's right $8. Watched this video and put it in in about 30 minutes. Thank you for taking the time to post this video and saving my neighbor that money that she can really use this time of year.

Very good video. I could not have done the repair without it. My mechanic wanted $150, so I got the part ($11.98 online) and did it myself. There were only two things that gave me trouble. The first was removing the upper rod from the old door handle. The second was reinserting one of the bolts holding the door handle to the door--it was very difficult to get the first couple of threads going before being able to tighten it with the wrench. I guess my hands were about three sizes too large. The total time spent on those two things took longer than everything else combined. But as I said, great video, so thank you.

I have a 1999 Toyota Tacoma V6, no power windows or locking, and same principles. I did find a hole that helps get the far bolt out MUCH easier. I think it was designed for that. A little piece of plastic covered it. The aftermarket handle had a weird fit but I made it work.

Just an FYI, there's a black grommet that can be removed to give easier access to the inner bolt of the door handle. Pop off the grommet and you can use a longer extension to access the inner bolt instead of shoving the wrench inside. Hope this makes sense.

I just did this with inspiration from this video. I am the most inept mechanic known to man and I have ruined entire engines with do it yourself stupidity (please don't ask). I was dreading this even though I pretty much knew I couldn't do any damage to the motor, at least I assumed...and I didn't. I did this in a little over an hour.
There are a couple things that I would add to the conversation here:
I found a brand new mirror at my local junkyard. Brand new in the box for $35. Can I say it was original equipment as in an original Toyota part? No, of course not (brand was TYC), but it seems to be just fine for a 17 year old vehicle.
Also on the thicker of the 2 bars that attach to the new handle, the clip for the bigger one snapped, which I was concerned it might. I live in Phoenix and plastic becomes very brittle. Not to worry, my new handle had a brand new one already attached to it.
I also didn't have to unplug my speaker as I was able to just set the panel down on the ground leaning up against the door. Plenty of access to the door handle. No undue stress to the wiring.
Other than that one of the snaps that hold the panel on broke, but it is only one and it doesn't seem to rattle or anything. LOVE my 2001 Toyota Tacoma. 17 years and still going strong.
