One note, I used your info today to replace that outside handle. Maybe there are different styles, but on my 2001 the inside handle had hooks that held it fast to the door. It took a little jiggling and a bit of force, but we got there. Don't ask about that clip on the outside handle lift rod. I monkeed around with it way too long before I realized the replacement handle had a new clip and I just broke the old one off. Thanks again for these videos.

So far I've been lucky with mine, but apparently it's a common problem. Hopefully you got an OEM version and not an aftermarket unit. I've heard the aftermarket versions fail much quicker.

Good tutorial man. I would mention to people that the handle needs to be slid forward towards the door hinge to come off of the metal door and pulled free though
On a 03 Tacoma, the inside door handle needs to be pushed towards the front of the vehicle to detach from the frame of the door. Otherwise, you will break clips on the inside handle.

Once the door panel is removed, is it possible to remove the area of cloth material on interior? I was hoping to reupholster that area with some leather instead of that old cloth.
I would assume so, they're typically a separate piece from the panel. I can't remember the backside of this panel, but in general they're usually held on with clips or melted over type rivets or both.
On my 2001 Tacoma that cloth covered part is built in to the main unit. I wanted to do the same. But I asked an upholstery guy and he said he could get it recovered.
