'The face of boe they called me'
That is the single best line ever said by captain jack
Why? I don't see that it would be any greater than if he'd said he was any other random minor character from the show. The line doesn't make any material difference to the plot, and it's not even moving, stirring or inspiring. It's a non-line if ever there was one, whose only purpose seems to be to make fans go "What did he say?". In other words, it seems to me it was just a deliberate bit of fan-service/mischief by Russell T Davies.
@@ftumschk you may be right but that little mischief made us all gasp
@@krishang7122 It surprised me, too, but it immediately struck me as a case of RTD getting Jack to refer to a past character just for the fun of it. It makes no sense dramatically.
@@ftumschk but at least for that few seconds it knocked you of your seat
And I think it was worth it
@@ftumschk it makes sense that Jack is the Face of Boe though. After all, he’s the one who told the Doctor you are not alone (YANA). That’s how the face of boe knew. Another interesting piece is that in the end of the world, Roses first adventure on the Tardis, the event that they watch is sponsored by the Face of Boe.
One of the most unexpected twists in Doctor Who History
Wow Crispy's here. Love your channel. I agree it's a wonderful twist.
I want a whole season with jack, and in the finale we see him become the face of bone, with the headless monks and everything
@@DoctorWhoHugh There’s a spin-off show called Torchwood, with Captain Jack as the main character. But I don’t think it shows him becoming the Face of Boe though.
@@WideMouth nah it doesn’t. Either in Doctor Who Series 13/14, or Torchwood Series 5 I really want to see Moffat’s script adapted

he’s the best doctor
He was really close to tears here
@@uwu_milkboyHe is actually my favourite.
Martha was the companion who in most of her time with the doctor had a major responsibility. Saved the doctor so many times. She was a very, incredibly strong companion. Just watch her episodes and see
Thought her acting was very bland honestly
@@goldvoltage9053 i get that, but also lets be honest, past the romance and crying, Rose could get pretty boring too?
_Russell recently confirmed - indisputably - that Jack really is the Face of Boe._

We were already all sure of that
I mean it was obvious
@@user-bt1ge2ge9i during the watch along he said there goes the face of boe
This scene literally confirms it
First off "Face of Boe, they called me" is the best lore drop EVER. The look on Martha and the Doctor's faces!
But also "Agatha Christie! I'd love to meet Agatha Christie!" Just wait, Doctor.
I’m blown away by the fact that I am rewatching the series and I searched if Jack was the face of Boe and today this popped up.
IT WAS MEANT TO BE!
Wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff.
Imagine how the doctor felt in journeys end when rose said "She's Good" to Martha. Took the doctor ages to realise and rose got it straight away.
Because he was blinded by love for Rose. The thing is Unit didn't do Martha any favours but she's brilliant.
what was the doctor supposed to be realising?
@@sahilonpc9250 That something bad was going to happen.
@@sahilonpc9250 no that Martha Was a good and useful character. The doctor over looked her because he had just lost rose but as soon as he realised this,Martha had left.
@@LewieGamesumm he definitely knew. He trusted her to travel across the world to help him take down the Master. He also trusted her to protect and take care of his human self in the Family of blood
Frick rewatch her first episode when they are together in the hospital. He immediately saw how special she was and how good enough she was to be his companion.
He was just never in love with her and still getting over Rose. But even in his time of mourning, the doctor is careful with the friends he chooses.
Can confirm after the last special that Jack is definitely aging. Not sure at what rate, but definitely aging.
Lol. That’s cause the actor himself is ageing. They have to write that he is ageing so they don’t have to use sfx on him when he comes back again.
@@jonathanblake6130 I think everyone is aware of that Johnathan. But we’re talking within the context of the narrative.
They should do some special effect to make his head slowly get bigger and bigger every time we see him now
@@GGoAwayy In one of the audio-only plays Jack loses his head to the headless monks. So his head survives. And the face of boe is truly ancient.
@@jonathanblake6130 I think it’s VFX not SFX
0:55 "Boe" theme from Gridlock starts 30 seconds before the reveal!
Best part to me was the fact that there was no music before it
Man this music is just steeped in nostalgia for me. Murray Gold is one of the best music producers of all time. I don’t think he’s ever made a bad song?
Jack was the only companion until River Song that I felt was truly capable of being independent of the Doctor. He followed his own harder morals and didn't even have to stay on earth if he didn't want to.
What about Sarah Jane
Martha Jones was/is so underappreciated she went throw hell and racism in previous episodes and risk everything for the doctor at least she didn’t have a fate like rose, Donna, or Amy.
Martha will remain my favorite companion. She's the sharpest, smartest and an actual match for doctor. I will forever be sad how she's there for only a short period of time.
Martha was easily my favorite long-term companion during the post-Baker era... She was smart as hell and gorgeous. Give me an entire season of the Doctor joined by K-9, Captain Jack, and Martha and I'd die a happy nerd!
Yes one of my favourite too👍.
Can't recall her experiencing racism though? When was that?
@@ecurb10 I think they mean the actress
The only companion to get away unscathed and of her own volition, Rose stuck in a parallel universe, Donna had to lose her memories *SPOILERS* Wellllllll for a few decades at least !, Amy and Rory zapped by the weeping angels, Clara killed by a bird, bill potts killed by cybermen.
This was the golden age of Doctor who
Dc what anyone says this was the goat era of doctor who
Facts
Such a good series. Series 10 is my favourite, but seasons 3 to 5 is when the show peaked.
Series 3 was the only series I had on dvd (this was back in like 2008 when Netflix wasn’t really a thing and you could only watch it on dvds) and man for a few years I watched this series again and again and again. Just brings me so many memories, and oh god, the soundtrack! This is the best series of new who imo. So many good stories, shame it’s pretty underrated.
This was my childhood 2007 GOAT year for doctor who
@@anesseameer 100% It’ll never be as good again. We never realised how lucky we were back then :(
When Martha started "Time was-" I remembered when the Doctor said "Time was, one dalek could take over the planet."
Yes. Completely irrelevant. I know.
Might be intentional! Same message, about one person changing the world (for better or for worse.)
@@nightowl8477 since my original comment was so off topic, can I just say, whilst I'm still off topic, that a billion daleks are less dangerous than one.
Like a billion of them would fly around and get sucked back into the void or whatnot.
Whilst one of them rounds the corner and shoots the Doctor.
Dr who logic
@@genzu6388 Group mentality. They all just assume someone else will do it first so they don't shoot in case that will make it worse, which it so happens to do sometimes.
Plus, the way the Daleks arrive often make it easier to destroy them. A dalek ship exploding can kill them all, but a single flying dalek has nothing to be afraid of.
Room ... Shambles
I wish they did something with The Face of Boe in Revolution of the Daleks.
same because he mentioned where he was from again
He mentioned Rose Tyler
@@toainsully That moment feel so forced.
When the Dalek merged with his face, I thought for a moment that's how begins to look like the Face of Boe we know
Imagine how bad and pointless this scene would be if he wasn’t the Face of Boe, he’s Boe there’s no debate
he isn't, it makes no sense. For one thing the face of boe was pregnant at one point, he's also said to belong to the species Boekind which is completely different species. The face of boe also dies and we know Jack can't.
@@akaakaakaak5779 He’s from the 51st century, aliens would of existed on earth, he is bisexual, implying that an alien could be his parent that can be pregnant regardless of gender. You Are incredibly gullible, first, Moffatt and Russell confirmed Jack as Boe, and it was even admitted on screen. Get your brain checked, thank you.
@@DingleDangle66 also if you look at the face of boe's words when talking to the doctor calling him "old friends" when they only met 3 times and "you are not alone" which is a hint to the master yes but it also saying to the doctor your friends will always be with you even 400 years later you will still have friends that will stand with you to help save the universe cause he met the 13th's companions and saw how happy she was with them. It would make no sense for the face of boe to be someone completely different and not a fix point in time and space that saw the doctor lose those that he loved and cherished but gained more friends to always remind them that there are people out there who will stand with them forever ever after death. Also will jack never met 11th or 12th I am sure he herd his fair share of stories.
@@Srade2412 I also refuse to consider that Face of Boe is Jack, just because : if so, I can't admit (and above all, I can't understand) that Martha (and above all the Doctor) will have such big laughs at rhis revelation. They are coming back from New New York where they saw the death of Face of Boe ! If the Doctor realises that Face of Boe is his old friend Jack, I would imagine him shoked, sad, thinking of the passed times with Jack, but certainly not laughing this way !!! So if Russel says that Face of Boe is Jack, then there is a super lack of emotion in treating this moment. (hm, sorry for my English) .
@@emsicombs827 Captain Jack can't die and asks multiple times if the Doctor can fix his immortality. Knowing that Jack eventually becomes the Face of Boe after dying over and over for billions of years, it probably gave them relief that after so long he finally got a chance to die - while also saving New Earth. I don't think it devalues any of the emotion at all, in fact I think it probably heightens it knowing that he has a chance to rest.

I really liked Martha, she’s so under appreciated
While the dialogue is super clunky trying to get to the reveal it still does shock you greatly, such a good moment
Loved Martha Jones. One of my favorite companions.
i love this scene, their reactions and faces are amazing
I loved Martha with the doctor❤️😭
I love Cardiff! I traveled to this location a year ago before COVID spread, then got back to Australia. It was really nice being there though
The way I sum up each doctor who era:
Russell’s era felt very grounded and down to earth, made characters feel very relatable.
Moffats era embraced its sci fi nature and made it seem more alien and went deeper into doctor who’s history
Chibnall’s era is hard to explain for me as I haven’t really watched it as I’m not a fan of his writing but from what I’ve seen I guess he tries to make aliens relatable to humans
I think Russell got it spot on. He did fantastic sci-fi that also featured relatable characters.
@@charliedavidarnott1537 Agreed.
Russel was Sci Fi
Moffat was Sci Fantasy
Chibnall is Sci Bullshit
@@nivaneh1010 Russel was more soapy actually than just Sci Fi. It was very grounded and the characters were well fleshed out, you got a sense of their lives. Chibnall is fantastic. My favourite Doctor Who showrunner.
@@MovieMagic515 chibnall is a good writer my favourite thing he’s done is that Joshua episode on Torchwood but for some reason his work on Doctor Who just seems like a parody of the previous seasons
"You know? I am good!"
Some words we could all use *winks*
This is the Doctor Who I grew up with. As a kid my dad had downloaded random dr who episodes and I happened to grow up with mostly season 3, Martha is my favourite companion, probably out of nostalgia since she was written into a corner with the whole ‘i love the Doctor, he doesn’t love me back’ thing, which really undercut her character and agency, she was set up as a smart independent doctor and then mostly became the doting love interest, still, she’s fantastic. Freema Agyeman and David still had a great chemistry and to some this is the lower-rung of Tennant’s run and least favourite companion of the tenth, but idk, im glad i grew up with this series.
If you doubt that Jack is the Face of Boe, just consider that, after Billions of years of life, all he needed was The Face. The body withered away, and was discarded. He became something beyond human, something brilliant, something beautiful. Something completely new. The Face of Boe.❤❤❤
It would be good if they could explain how his face got so big with tentacles, I suppose billions of yrs of evolution, but then why would evolution take away his body? 🤔 so many questions 😂.
No shit

I miss you too
The "Thank You" and the look in the camera. Maronn'. 🤘
Even though that Doctor Tennant will never forget Martha Jones, a certain friend named Donna will come back as the last companion for Doctor Tennant.
Last regular companion anyway. His last companion period was her grandfather
I loved Martha Jones
In the years to come, face of boe / jack WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBED. I saw the actor John Chapman in the Ralph Lauren shop about 5 years ago in Glasgow. We know we'll all be looking forward to the coming doctor who series!!
Loved me some Martha Jones!!!
This was such a beautiful ending to Series 3, and best of all Cardiff Bay is one of the easiest filming locations to visit.
I can’t wait till the 60th Special I miss David soo much 😭
The look on Martha face is the same that was on Ryan's. Like when the companion gets in the TARDIS and looks soul-less, ya know it's over, poor Doctor
Brilliant moment. Love the music.
I'm really here to see the part at: 2:02 - 2:40
You can just see he's deep in thought here, almost certainly thinking about every time he met the face of Boe, connecting the dots, but mostly just really thinking about Jack's last words to him: "you are not alone"
The music just tells you everything, as soon as the shock of the reveal wears off, the reality of the life he inadvertently cursed Jack with starts to set in.
Most important moment in this scene, to me, is that look of longing on the Doctor's face as he hugs Martha. So much pain. Sadly, it was that pain that ultimately really called for Tennant's doctor to bow out. It just piled on the character. Too much.
I like how he did eventually meet Agatha Kristy
Is he the Face of Boe?
Bruh of course he is, whoever said he wasn’t 😂

@@akaakaakaak5779 maybe after so many years he evolved and possibly even started the boe race and outlived them all
Im glad you didnt put in the part where she comes back once more at the end. It is so so much better this way
Ah, those days when Doctor Who could drop a brilliant, unexpected reveal, the pace of story telling gave time for characters to just breathe and exist for a moment and goodbyes had pathos and emotion. I miss that.
Um the jadoon episode
"Ya know the little grey hair..."
Hahaha little do you know jack
That was the days when doctor who wis gud and fun tae watch I miss these days.
To me this is back then when this fandom wasn't so toxic and lethal.
Back then you could comment what ever you wished without toxic fans on your case.
The only person who can salute to the Doctor
Russell's stories really were the best.
to me, Martha's issue was one, being after Rose and two, the whole "i love the doctor" crap, why did they make such a strong, brilliant, diverse character so strung up on him. It really undermined who she was and what she did, which was frankly a bloody lot. Martha I salute you, you didnt get a fair deal due to seriously bad writing........
What I never understood in this episode is the Doctor and Marhta laughing so much when they realise that Jack is the Face of Boe : if I remember well, they are just coming back from New New York, where they saw Face of Boe diing. So, how can the Doctor laugh so pleasantly when he understands that in fact he saw the death of his dear old friend. Those big laughs are a real mystery for me, because in other moments, Russel (and others) produced real moments of deap emotion : it seems to me that this moment when Jack is mentioning this past, and this nickname, was an occasion for one of those moments.
i think it's more about seeing that their friend finds solace at the end of the day, and at some point in life. Jack kept prodding at dying since the beginning of the last two episodes, even going as far as to ask the Doctor if Rose could fix him ( when he found out that she was the one that bestowed him eternal life ) , but the Doctor kept being bearer of bad news and saying he can't do it. their light-hearted laughing is more about the odds of that. he is going to die, blissfully, doing the best of deeds too.
I remember this at the time . I think my jaw dropped open .
2:10 when Francine does a wee smile back makes me 😭.
i love doctor who. It is a part of me. Its one of those shows that can get me to tear up in seconds :)
My deceased sister, a definite Captain Jack fan, explained to me why Jack's not necessarily the Face of Boe and doggone it, I can't remember what her argument was :( but I'm sure it's a good one. She knew NuWho inside, outside and upside-down.

@dr103 no it isn’t

Thank you from France.
Oui !!!
I'm glad Russell T Davies confirmed Jack to be the Face Of Boe.
Don't believe me? The scene literally IMPLIES it to be true ending on a high note (one of Russell T Davies famous show don't tell techniques), Literally search it up because it says it and read the articles. Plus Jacks character is shaped towards him becoming Boe.
So *PLEASE.* While Chibnall is going through this pointless retcon/add pointless things to the character phase, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ALTER JACKS. People like it better when we're positive this is how Jack will turn out. Chibnall. I know you did episodes for Torchwood BUT THAT DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO ALTER YET ANOTHER CHARACTER TO PLEASE YOUR FETISHES AND FANFICTION!!!
I wish they would bring back torchwood
The old Torchwood, not the garbage they turned it into calling it seasons 3 and 4.
If they don't want an "official" Torchwood with those "we're in charge here"-badges anymore, that's fine with me -- I'm sure Jack can talk his way into scenarios just like the Doctor would, and I'm assuming the Doctor won't take away psychic paper from him either.
And then, not everything needs to be a huge threat -- taking Gwens suggestion "you could do more to help" might also be something they could just stumble into at times, with no aliens at all, or aliens that aren't a threat, or aliens that need help.
@@Syndur I agree it got too much at the end like Rex can’t die so that mixes things up to much
What's funny about this is that John Barrowman's hair is really gray. I had no idea he dyed it lol.
The biggest plot twist I didn’t see coming
SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME I JUST WATCHED THIS AND MY JAW WAS ON THE FLOOR!!!!! I CANT...MY EMOTIONS MY BRAIN IS EXPLODED THIS IS CRAZY AWSOME THAT JACK IS THE FACE OF BO AND HE SET OFF THE EVENTS OF THE FINALE. I don’t know how I NEVER caught this. This whole scene went right over my head. 🤯
we all had the same reaction the Doctor and Martha had when Jack said that he used to be called the Face of Boe
I can't believe I existed when this was made (2007) and existed when this was posted! (2021)
I like to think that at some point Jack figured out how to reverse whatever the Doctor did to the vortex manipulator.
I need some more torchwood, I don’t know how many times I can re-watch torchwood
Jack was there in the scene in Utopia when 10 found out who Yana really was towards the end, and Martha mentioned the Face of Boe telling him he’s not alone. I’m surprised this never gets brought up, cause my argument for it was that Jack, who is notoriously a self-admitted conman, heard Martha talk about him to 10, and was just making it up to play around with the Doctor a bit
The acting, the scripts, the characters, the music were all in perfect sync. Have a look at what happened to it in the last few years in particular, not just Chibnall but Moffat ruined the show too. Standard of scripts were bin worthy. This was truly the golden age
HEEEEEE'S BAAAAAACK!

During the scene with Amy and focus child where the headless monks attacked them originally Jack was supposed to be here and get beheaded by a monk making him the face of boe
back when the show was watchable
From what I remember about the face of Boe, ending up like that is a fate worse than death.
Cheeky bastard definitely knew what he did there after martha mentioned the face of boe in front of him
I miss Torchwood. Gotta love seeing the water tower of the hub and Roald Dahl Plass as it reminds you of what it once was 🙂

My 13 year old brain could not handle this scene
Apparently, those were the actual reactions of the actors when they realized Jack was the face of Boe
It wasn't in the script
Hey wait a minute, back in "Utopia" upon discovering Professor Yana is a Time Lord (but before they discover he's the Master), Martha mentions to the Doctor the Face of Boe's dying words right in front of Jack. Yet he didn't even say anything. Could've said "Face of Boe? Huh, what a coincidence. That was my nickname when I was signed up for the time agency. But clearly a time and a place to talk about that right now.". Guess he was just saving it up for this moment despite having to wait a whole year in the year that never was.

If Jack is the face of boe, it makes sense. When the face of boe dies he says he's the last of his kind, which makes sense because no other humans were around when he died I'm pretty sure. I could be wrong, I haven't watched this show in a while. It also makes sense if Jack isn't the face of boe, it's totally within his personality to say something like this just to mess with the doctor.
Jack is the only one the doctor doesn’t tell off for saluting him
