I hope that Captain Jack meets the new Doctor it would be so much fun to see him flirt with her and then she says no don't, in just that way. Then you see Jack slowly realize. Tho it would have to be farther in the future since John has aged. He still looks amazing but not how he did 14 years ago.

I think there’s still some time for Barrowman to appear in Dr Who again. Why the heck not? The character has been adrift and sad for long enough lol. There was also a Time Agent in the Rosa Parks episode last series. I feel it was underdeveloped and was screaming ‘to be continued’.

My dad watched Doctor Who way back in the 80's when Tom Baker was current. Years later, he started watching Torchwood with no idea that it was related to Doctor Who. After hearing the TARDIS noise at the end of this episode, he was like, "O m g."
Fast forward to 2010, he was watching the premier of Series 5 (The Eleventh Hour) and I asked him what he was watching. He just told me, "Sit down and watch... You'll probably enjoy it."
If it wasn't for this scene in Torchwood, my Doctor Who obsession would have never been.

I kind of wish they'd cross edited it to show Jack running for the Tardis at the beginning of Utopia.
It would've been nice, but the filming schedules wouldn't have worked out. Doctor Who series 3 would still have been filming for about 3 months after this episode aired, with the finale episodes filmed last.
There was a nice edited clip of both scenes together in the DVD extras of the series 3 DW boxset.
It's because the doctor was originally going to land in the hub hence the wind but for logistical reasons they shot it outside
I meant in this clip posted to UA-cam, I have no doubt there are logistical reasons it wasn't done in either of the actual shows.

It's so weird how Doctor Who had a kid-friendly spin off and an adult themed spin off. It feels like a universe where nothing is bound to ethics.

Owen trying to hold back tears and breaking down when Jack forgives him. After betraying him, shooting him and opening the rift, Jack knows why he done it. He still cares for him because he knows Owen better than Owen knows himself.
Seeing Owen break down shows how a tough exterior personality can always hide a man who cries
This show should have a comeback, especially as it was mentioned in the opening episode of series 12...come on Beeb get the Torchwood gang back together.
I dont think that would be a good idea right now. Back then the doctor was good, the stories were really well written and were enjoyable to watch. If they cant get the main show straight I think starting up a spin off would just divert resources they clearly arent managing well already.
@@feynmanwasagenius3482 possibly, but I do think that aside from the mention in the opening of the first episode, it would be nice to see Torchwood appear if only as a slight cameo as UNIT have regularly appeared in Who, not necessarily a whole new series but it'd be nice to see that the Torchwood lot were still around doesn't have to be the crew we already know...just a thought.

It’s a shame the Doctor didn’t actually land in the Hub in Utopia like it’s implied here. Or at least have this episode ending imply that the TARDIS landed outside.
If you watch the last shot panning over, you can see Jack sprinting across towards where it landed in utopia

Hmm... I suspect the TARDIS noise is just in Jack’s head. He uses his vortex manipulator to teleport up to the surface, hence his disappearance. But pops down when everyone has gone to get the hand.
Or it’s a continuity error. With a re-edit it could work. Just needs a second of Jack transmitting up to the surface.
@@stevemaggs6322 I don't think that the teleport works on his vortex mainpulator at this time. He probably went up the elevator type thing that takes up to the surface and uses the perception filter on the surface. It is seen in the first episode when Suzy tries to shot Gwen and Ihanto uses it in Children of Earth just prior to Jack's bomb exploding. It would explain how he got to the surface to find the Tardis without the rest of the team seeing him.
The elevator is where the TARDIS parks. Jack doesn't have a perception filter, it's just leftover residue from the TARDIS that gives that spot its perception filter properties. Nah. The Tardis was in front of the fountain, what you're seeing is moving AWAY from the fountain.

None of them are Jack, they're all the public and the footage has been sped up. The clip actually hints that the Tardis landed inside the hub, which makes zero sense but sure

@@TheDwarvenPeople That little discrepency between End of Days/ Utopia always fascinated me. When this first aired, it seemed as if the Tardis materialised in the hub then dematerialised pretty much instantly; implying that originally - on top of Gwen's line of notable conviction, 'something's taken him' - that the writers meant for The Doctor to pick Jack up.
The thing is that Jack only had to wait 10 years in the past to catch up with the right version of the Doctor

I love burn gorman’s performance in this scene. So much emotion with only one word of dialogue.
Owen had a hard time in this episode. He got fired, then he shot Jack.

Two continuity errors:
1) when Jack has left, you can still see the hand-jar sat on the desk despite in Utopia he has clearly taken it with him
2) when panning out, one would expect to see the recently-parked TARDIS by the water tower (though this can be explained by its either already gone or hasn’t quite materialised yet)
This was filmed ages before Utopia so they weren't fully sure of how they were gonna do it in Doctor Who.

@@FortoFight We're talking like 4-8 months, the script hadn't even been fully decided on yet for utopia and it just happens they changed their mind on some details after they filmed it on Torchwood.

I didn't think I'd ever say this but i miss Torchwood.
Our memories all those late nights on BBC Three; This was such a twist back in the day. Never saw it coming... At least I didn't but now I suppose it makes sense, The Rift fully opening probably drew The TARDIS to Cardiff and only made out to the Doctor that she needed to refuel. I know it was said in Moffat's era but The TARDIS may not take the doctor where he wants to go but she'll always take him where he needs to go.

This ending never quite matched up with the start of the ‘Eutopia’ Doc Who episode. The TARDIS is clearly supposed to be materializing inside the hub and not up on the street above as happens in Eutopia. The container with The Doctor’s hand in is also still in shot as the camera pans out, when it should have been strapped to Jack’s back. Considering the show-runner was the same for both shows, it always bugged me a little that the continuity went out the window a little. Great scenes both though!
I guess you've just gotta accept that minor continuity error as a result of series 3 not yet being completely finished at the time this episode was made. It's likely the production team didn't know exactly how the opening of Utopia would play out
That would mean the doctor randomly changes his stance on captain Jack for no reason and just decides to go get him one day (one of the only times he could fly the thing right if that were the case). I also feel like if they wanted it to show up down there they could have gotten it as the shows were all crossovers.
I love Owen's reaction. He's bracing himself for the worst and Jack forgiving him just causes all that hard exterior to melt away. It's so good
Barrowman and the whole torchwood cast are so underrated.
I was bummed out when this series came to an end. I'm still hoping that Captain Jack will make an appearance in Doctor Who again.

Boggles my mind, too. Chibnall should've just continued to do Torchwood related stuff, he was good at it.
If all three showrunners came back and brought back the spin-offs, I'd want Russell T Davies to work on Doctor Who, Chris Chibnall to work on Torchwood, and Steven Moffat to work on a continuation of the Sarah Jane Adventures, following the adventures of Luke, Clyde, Rani, and Sky.
We loved Torchwood and were so sad to see it end.
I remember New Years Day 2007 watching this and been super excited knowing the Doctor is coming and then in Series 3 it followed straight on.

Yeah, but they already didn't want to include the Doctor in TW because they feared it would make kids want to watch a show they're too young for, so that would have been even less likely to be greenlit unfortunately.

Lightwood Studios feel like the time for another crossover for torchwood and SJA has passed and class is kind of dead in the water on Tv, think it would’ve been smart to bring one or two characters into series 10 for an episode to keep it relevant but ah well

I loved this ending I got so excited when. I heard the TARDIS sounds I was hoping we'd see the Doctor but all the same this ending was brilliant and I know exactly what happened to Jack well we all found out later that year.

Well with RTD returning to D-W who knows.
You can see in the final shot that the container with the doctors hand in it was still there despite jack having taken it with him for utopia.
i was rewatching torchwood and just finished this episode, is really funny the way they all pose.
Also after so many years i JUST realized that torchwood is an anagram for doctor who and it blew my mind

They knew, but they thought even he wouldn't be able to survive what happened, and he'd been 'dead' for quite a while at that point.

He made bad experiences with telling people that he was immortal. Some of the people he loved ran away, others used him for experiments. Not telling anyone was safer and easier.
Eddie Bingham basically they only just found out he was immortal in this episode and when he sacrificed himself to defeat Abbadon, he and everyone else believed he wouldn’t survive it. Jack also didn’t really know how and why he was immortal and he didn’t know to what extent at the time so he preferred to keep it a secret as he wasn’t sure if it would ever run out

i would like to think the 9th doctor popped a visit to jack rather than it being 10 to fix the plot hole here of the tardis landing in the hub rather than outside. we could say it was 10 but in utopia, jack doesn't recognize 10's face, so it had to be another incarnation.
Well the hand was freaking out so it's clearly 10, I feel that it would have been better if the end scene was him picking up the jar then sprinting for the exit before showing the next shot of a copy and paste job from Utopia (even big blockbusters do that sort of copy/paste thing). Also I wonder how a conversation between Jack and Tosh would go immediately after Aliens In London given that a) it was Tosh's first appearance, b) she interacted with 9th Doctor - who I've realised probably had the shortest life of any of his regenerations - in the episode and c) she and Owen reference it as "Space pig" in Exit Wounds.
Jedi Spartan 38 this was filmed and released way before Utopia so they couldn’t have done that
Nivane H Recently Jack met the sixth doctor (which is set prior to this episode) and Torchwood have access to UNIT files (which would undoubtedly have recorded the Doctor’s other incarnations) so he’s aware of regeneration at this point
I wish they didn’t kill off this team. They all worked. I especially like how Eoin, who is played by an actor who’s doing lots of nerd roles or campy villains from what I can tell yet here he was the man who got the women. He wasn’t the typically good looking guy you’d expect for that role.
Once they killed them off and blew up the base the show was never the same for me.

My favourite series is 5, of Doctor who. Followed closely by 4, 3, 9. Series 3 is massively boosted for me by this ending. How I live Torchwood

Seeing the team together like this almost makes me cry too, Owen, Tosh, Ianto, heroes to the end, & Gwen, the lone non immortal survivor, defending the earth whilst raising kids, & Jack being, well, Jack! Also, time to REMOVE John Barrowman from the BBC blacklist, he did nothing wrong and is one of the BEST NuWho characters ever.

I hope that's not an official 'never again' because the show really found its stride with Miracle Day. I'd love to see what the two immortals fight next alongside Gwen and Rhys.

Yoruichi The Extra Terrestrial if they’re factoring in Big Finish continuity then the Torchwood team were forced to go on the run after the events of series 6 and are now in hiding
Nobody talks about how they mentioned The Doctor in series 1. The thing about the spin offs is that The Doctor is sort of like an over-arching presence to everyone.
In Sarah Jane Adventures, Sarah would talk about the Doctor often, and of course The Doctor appeared twice.
In Class, no mention of him was given until the Tardis showed up in a flashback, and then appeared at the end of the first episode.
However, in Torchwood, Jack never mentioned the Doctor at the start. When he tells Gwen about his immortality, he mentions he’s looking for the right kind of Doctor. Then we see the hand in the jar, which he has some strange attachment to. Then in this clip, he mentions the right Doctor again, before the Tardis actually appears.
When you hear that sound of the Tardis it's the Doctor.
i’m not seeing enough people talk about owen and jack moment. i don’t know if it’s intentional and i have not faith but to me that moment is very reminiscent of how people portray jesus forgiving simon/peter. also owen breaking down always pulls on my heart strings. you can hear every regret he’s ever had coming out because someone finally made him feel like he deserves to be forgiven
What would Suzy Costello’s reaction have been in this scene I’m thinking. Poor Suzy got a bit of a raw deal with this one.
Always annoyed me that in Torchwood it materialised in the hub and in Doctor Who on the streets of Cardiff bay but I think it was just a production error

Im just curious 2 things. 1, they made seem like there is only 1 way in to torchwood and they said they didn't see him leave. either the tardis showed inside torchwood and took jack or jack used another way out. 2 its been shown that characters can hear the tardis from a good distance away, so this seems to lead to jack running outside while the tardis is recharging and jumping on just before it takes off. Leading to the tardis going to the end of the time and the meeting of the master. Also now that I think of it the tardis doesn't like jack cause he's a fixed point in time so unlikely it would show inside torchwood.

The police boot in Dr. Who is an incredible invention. The simple and truly boot ID a powerful space-time machine. The modern & spacious interior and central intelligent consolé that is the brain of the shop is impresing when is working in it's process, and the engine sound and yelow lights when boot ID desapearing is si impresive as well. Very avanced idea for the time that was broadcasted in TV.

So how did the office get messed up at the end? Did the TARDIS pop in for a brief second casting the papers about or was it Jack's vortex? I do not recall the teleporter causing many distortions or wind in other episodes.

This was made ages before Utopia, so they ended up changing how Jack enters the Tardis later on in Doctor Who.

There's literally no proof for this and it's entirely my own head-canon, but I wonder if the TARDIS *did* land inside the Hub from the Doctor's future, and told Jack to get to the surface so he could encounter the 10th Doctor. Or hell, even that the Utopia opening happened while Jack was still dead after Abaddon, and the Doctor took him back so he could catch the 10th Doctor while he was there

There is just one thing I never understood in this episode: in Doctor Who, the Doctor landed in the streer above them, so maybe he was near enough to maje Jack hear the TARDIS' noise, it could even explain the papers flying around, even if the TARDIS is not directly in the room, but how the hell can it explain Jack's sudden "disappearing". As we know, the Doctor didn't want him in the TARDIS, so he didn't pick him up inside Torchwood HQ, we know Captain Jack's vortex manipulator is break down, so he could only get off the HQ by the two exits, but he would have been seen by his team. If he get off by the roof lift, he would have been seen by Gwen, otherwise, if he get off by the bay, he would have been seen by Ianto, Owen and Tosh, so BBC added this "disappearing" to make it mire dramatic but for my money I think this is a plothole that possibly can't be explained
