Glad to see a video on the spring king. i have one of these. It works well for about 10 minutes then i lose volume. Every time. I stopped using it because of that. I'll be taking a look inside to see if mine has the same issues.
I think you can definitely hear the difference with the tank hooked up, even without it picking up room sound. But yeah the reverb drive is probably a bit under powered. Could be interesting territory for mods. I've seen a trick of using op-amps in parallel for more current capacity to drive a reverb tank. And someone could put in a daughter board with a voltage doubler. Or you could probably power the whole pedal with 18 or 24 volts with some minor modifications. It's really not bad as is though.
I paid 90 for my new one on Reverb. $119 shipped. I really like it. but it is HUGE. I wanted a real Spring Tank on the cheap. This did it. But I think it's a gateway drug. Now I want a Surfeybear.

You've got to pick your battles carefully. I won't touch SMT or digital pedals unless I'm preeeeetty sure it's just an issue of a bad jack or loose connection. It *is* possible to solder those miniaturized components, but it's not something I want to spend an evening doing. If it's something with full-size analog components, definitely dive in. Look for anything out of the ordinary, then grab a multimeter and make sure everything that should be connected *is* connected (and vice-versa) then if you still haven't found the problem, consult a schematic and literally trace the signal path. I've been able to revive pedals with burnt-out diodes, lifted traces, one time the only thing wrong was that a chip fell out of its socket.
Did you have any insight on why the volume is basically useless? I’ve heard it described as controlling the wet/dry mix but mine has no perceptible effect. I know you said it was “subtle” but it just doesn’t seem like that’s right
I must be a muttonhead. Your experiment @ 11:38 confused me; how can you get reverb out of the pedal if your guitar isn't going into the Input? Also, how much of the reverb is coming from the tank, or is it just there so you can bang on the enclosure (the extended clatter @ 5:00 is awesome)? Anyways, another great video! Ah, I probably didn't really spell that out. The sound coming out of the Peavey Classic 30 amp is enough to vibrate the spring tank, even though there's no signal coming into it. It's kind of like it's kicking the pedal, but with sound waves. I think the amount of reverb coming from the tank absent of there being sound in the room is fairly minimal. I contemplated modifying the pedal and cutting the output of the PT2399 to verify it, but I also wanted to make sure the pedal still worked when I was done. Thanks for watching, and great questions!
you can mod it to have controls for the repeats and speed of the delay, I did that to mine. there is smd pad soldering involved tho so be prepared for that.

I heard just a tad more of the actual tank reverberation in the mix with it maxed but you’re right, it doesn’t seem like it does much of anything
