    Never underestimate the power of a minimalist drummer. Sometimes it's about the notes you don't play!

    • @newyorkslim2001
      @newyorkslim2001 Рік тому +4

      Man, you're so right. The drumming here is so integral to the musical sound -- not just banging noise. They're such an ensemble... drummer is part of every phrase.

    • @BennieWilll
      @BennieWilll Рік тому +1

      @@newyorkslim2001 It's a bad habit to just bang as loud and play as fast as you can. This is tight, controlled, and really unique beat. It sings. This is good drumming right here. He only needs one tom to get the job done.

      The best drummers serve the song, not their ego.

    I first saw the Aces in 1977, and that concert had a real impact on my life. The band performed all the music from the Stacked Deck album plus bunch of others. Yep, not only was the music excellent that evening, I also met a woman at the concert who would later become my wife. Still, after all these years and so much great music, ARA remains "amazing" and one of our favorite bands.

      Oh god , I was just that age and I loved the frog setting up on the wooden motorcycle, epic, totally epic, Sammy Kershaw made me mad he made their song popular , they should have enjoyed the status, most people think he coined the phrase in the song

    The guitarist on this video is Kelvin Holly. The original was Barry Byrd Burton which has since passed on. May he RIP. Barry Burton was the one who recorded the song in studio with The ARA band. Holly came into the picture long after in 1995 or so. But he is a darn good player too.

    I can't shake the memory anchor I have for this song. I was living in Gretna, and everyday I'd drive across the Huey P. Long into New Orleans, and this music transports me immediately to the mid 70s, when my young son and I would sing this at the top of our voices. What an amazing piece of music!!!!

    I thought they sounded great. Age is tough on everyone, performers and non-performers alike, but I heard the Aces live about 2 years ago, and I loved it. I am a singer, player and writer, now 64, and first met them back in the mid 1970s on a visit to Memphis to see my cousin who was working at Tanner at the time (he also played bass with Bobby Bare and sat in with these boys every now and then). This generation is fading fast, you better get it while you can (I would probably be considered one notch behind them, but not far). My cousin, who never had a day job, and lived and supported his family by writing songs and jingles, and playing or recording music in one form or another, around Memphis, every day of his life since he graduated from North Texas State with a Masters in Jazz Guitar, until the day he passed away last year.
    As far as this fool, until 2013 I felt no differences when comparing my 20 year old stage hog self, to my then 60 year old even more of a stage hog self, with my voice better than it was at 20 (I thought). But on St John's Day 2014 I got burned and spent 34 days in the Burn Center. About 9 months later I contracted Norovirus from a cruise ship, then two years after that I was diagnosed with both Rheumatoid Arthritis and Recurrent Gout, OUCH! I am screwed, RA does have effects on the voice, think Green Acres, Mr. Haney. BUT, for some, it comes and goes, and for me it does, to a great extent. So I still have some great days, then bad ones, then great ones, ABABABAB :0 ) I am grateful for the good ones, I try to record then, and I hope whoever chances to have their ear's bent on one of my bad days, can tolerate it a little, and pray that it turns to a good one quickly. And maybe give the Aces a little break too (but I am not a hater, and I like the original solo better too) hey are older than me.

    I cover this song, and after seeing this video, did a little research, as I had never heard any other tunes by them. They put out out 18 albums, but only this song ever made through here in Canada. I will have to look up some of the rest of their catalog. This tune is a classic, and I loved it the first time I heard it, took 40+ years to get around to adding it to my set list.
