    They had a good number of hits in the 80’s, Russel Smith also wrote many hits for other artists. They had a real career and continued until Smiths death, so far from a Flash-in-the-pan.

    Man I was about 15 years old playing music daily with my uncle & his old buddy’s when driving home one night my uncle played me maybe there greatest hits album & hearing Russell’s voice was one of the best things I had stumbled across musically at that young age !! It was very similar to when I heard Levon Helm for the first time , there’s just nothing like that kind of singer…. & The Amazing rhythm Aces what a cool friggin name & Holds True!!!! Just a Great Band all the way around!! Now I’m 40 in 2022 & yes there are good bands still playing but there NOT THAT !!!

    • @daveberkheimer2166
      @daveberkheimer2166 6 місяців тому

      @@razorsharpe3371 You're absolutely right, there wasn't an ounce of ego in Byrd. The first time I met him was at a small custom session. I was the leader/rhythm guitarist on the session...... and imagine my surprise when Byrd shows up to play pedal steel. I had written the charts the night before from tapes that had been provided by the "artist". One of the slow songs was in 5/4, a thing you hardly see in rock let alone country. But it worked, and after all it was the artists song, so I wrote the chart as is. So the time comes around to do the song, I hand out the charts, Byrd looks at the chart, looks at me and says, "5/4?". Can't believe I'm doing a session with Byrd Burton. I say, "yep". He replies, "you have a tape?". I say, "yep". So we listen to a bit of the tape and all sudden Byrd says, "Well I'll be a son of a bitch! I've been playing all my life and I never ever recorded a country song in 5/4!!!"
      By the way, do you play fiddle? I used to know of a fiddle player named razor sharpe.... I think. God it was long ago....

      I didn't know Russell was gone, but you are correct . Remember "third rate romance " being played
      on the radio when it was new. A mixed bag on the radio then with hard rock, novelty songs , and
      things like this, which was great. Now ---- junk. An obscure band along with "Asleep at the wheel "
      which was also great.
