@@WickedGamerCollector - You should cover this device too, Wicked. I'd like to know the hardware that's in this device as it seems to run quite nicely + uses RetroArch (apparently). A joystick upgrade would make a great video, too. Love your content & channel, bro 👍.
I'm normally "meh" on the Chinese handhelds you feature, but as soon as I saw the portability with the screw in joystick, the microswitches, and that it uses Retroarch, my interest picked up a lot. I'm sure it's good on TV but I like the idea of packing this in a bag and having a good joystick and buttons on the go. Tempted to make it a late Christmas present to myself. :)
Just be aware that the throw on the stick is a little far. I do mention this in the video but it is usable. Just don't expect a nice tight Sanwa or Semitsu feel. 👍
Turns out its getting better in a no time by now. We dont have to go back into the 90s. Even in 2016 this would have been Bloody impressive! Hats off for the review!
I have said it in the past and I'll say it again: Say what you want of this knockoff and the mediocre screen and mono sound but... This would have been my wildest and wettest dream when I was a teenager. Just imagine having this! The screen size, the joystick, the buttons, everything! Not even a game gear, lynx, nomad, or Turboexpress would have been a match for this.
Took the words right out of my mouth. lol. Something like this would be nice if you didn't want to use a full-size controller setup and just wanted to have a quick gaming session.
A13 has exact internals as the A12 except bigger buttons, slightly better screen. Whatever the A12 can run, A13 can run too. I prefer the A12 due to it's more arcade shape. These are fantastic system that runs Retroarch on CFW.
I like the shell, cool way to include a joystick. So used to poor hardware performance for emulation that this was a nice surprise, after a while you start to expect screen tear immediately lol. True, average arcade title is 320 pixels wide while NES/SNES is 256 so it's bound to be softer, and GB 160. Anyway pretty good.
I have really been enjoying live streaming from my A-12, if I didnt already have that I would purchase this one for sure! I use the "Retro-bit" Wireless Sega Saturn controller. Great little power-house of a console :) awesome review. When you get a "not supported" just restart system & all games should run fine. Had that happen a few times.
Thanks for the hint with the not supported stuff. This and the A12 are basically the same machine. Just this has a bigger screen and in my opinion, more Arcade like controls but it's not worth buying if you already have the equally as good A12.
Same. I love my a12 and already replaced the buttons and placed the Sakura mod sticker on it. I will buy the next version of this hopefully with a more vastly powerful cpu to emulate Naomi and model 2 hardware.
For the slowdown on Shock Troopers, I'm not sure about the original Arcade but the Wii Virtual Console port had slow down aswell and the version on the Neo Geo compilation disc for the Wii had some slow down as well
Even though it's a bit of a chunk vertically when folded down, I think I prefer how the A13 looks vs A12. The ability to fold it down would also help if you need to store the unit. I do think it would look better in a different color though.
Great review, as always. $99 shipped to the US is not a bad price for this. The fact that it runs RetroArch (pronounced Retro Ark, as in Archive,) is a plus.
It's funny how they always seem to nail this style of device. Everything tends to work well, has good HDMI output, and is decently powerful. It's a shame the same can't be said for most of their handheld devices. Regardless, this is pretty darn impressive! I hate that I now own two of the older models and now want to buy this one too lol.
This thing performs better then all Pandora Boxes folks !! Go and get one its even possible to play with your own Arcadestick on this device :-D My qanba q4raf works like a charm. Also there isnt any screentearing or lag which is awesome for arcade stuff !!
like others have said. the idea of a mini arcade cab that plays neo geo games was a impossible dream but now its 100% possible. so weird. but i want a console that can do that
Uh, interesting how Zero The Kamikaze Squirrel is Zero Style Special Attack Team (?), and not, "divine wind", or such. 1940's terminology. I get the feeling that Doom runs about as well on the real hardware... :)
I wish the aesthetics were a lot better. Honestly the pics of this and the A12 looked so cheap I didn't even investigate them. That is a LOT of red on the inside, especially because the NEO GEO arcade cabinet itself was mostly black on its front, with red and white around the controls and solid red on the outside of the cabinet. If the screen bezel plastic and the control panel were black, with red outer shells, and with a red and white striped metal faceplate for the controls like the RBG20 has it would go a LONG way to improving the look of this device. Change the button colors to match the Neo as well, particularly those red on red select buttons - oof that looks so cheap. That said, I think the actual device is AMAZING. The clamshell design with the detachable stick is an impressive innovation over the A12, and it helps it function like a regular game console, fitting well in an entertainment center and other similar spaces. In addition it help it be a more portable mini bartop, and makes the screen adjustable for different viewing angles. Two additional USB on the front would help solidify it as a perfect party portable, as the screen is large enough that four people with controllers could comfortable play something like Mario Kart 64 or TMNT, but not if someone is on the stick. You can split the usbs as it is, but 4 USB out of the box and with the option to connect to the font as well as the back would be great.
I know what you mean about the aesthetics of the system. It does look cheap. I think an all white model could look quite nice or black maybe with red highlights but yeah, as it is, it does look cheap. As I say in my video, this looks like a bento box. My wife honestly thought I'd ordered some take out.
21:36 - The NES runs every game in a resolution of 256x224. The PlayStation can do 640x480, but the majority of the games run in the exact same resolution as the NES, 256x224. Common resolutions for 4:3 arcade games are 256x224, 320x200, and 320x240. Capcom's CPS games run in a slightly higher res: 384x224. So the NES wasn't really lower resolution than most PS1 and arcade games, it's probably just that the NES emulator on this uses bilinear filtering and the MAME on it doesn't.
I rely love your videos on all these chines consoles but I must say that one thing all these consoles are bad at is having a good names. Anyway thanks for an awesome new video to enjoy.
Out of all the small systems you have reviewed which one would you recommend for the best all in one system? I have a mega drive mini PlayStation mini and neogeo mini at present , great video :)
Out of official consoles I'd choose the Mega Drive mini followed by the Astro City but out of these Chinese systems I'd say this is the best performing one by far.
What is your solution for the joystick from always unscrewing? Mine always gets loose when playing games particularly fighting games, its really annoying
Ah, for that I just stuck in some really strong glue for metals on to the base when screwing it in. The downside is the machine can no longer be closed.
I'm thinking about buying one. Can you add filters such as scanlines for the games? As it uses retroarch, I assume you can. Also, can you add your own games?
Yes, you can add your own game. I talk about this when showing the SNES dsp and special chip games. Scan lines and other filters you can probably add but I've not looked in to that.
Okay. I might as well mention it on here since this video encouraged me to mod the device to begin with. Sadly I do believe the power button has broken, and I'm not quite sure if it's the switch attached to the motherboard or if its the plastic pushbutton giving me issues. The pushbutton will not "lock" in place once pressed nor will it turn on the device unless pressed in extremely hard. Also, unfortunately the sd card fell out and broke in half. Now, I know you can buy the motherboard for the device separately on Aliexpress and that it supposedly comes preloaded with 9000 games but do I even need to do this? Would it solve anything or is there a simpler solution? Help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Yep, it's a modded case with a Pi 4B inside. I use it as a Tate Arcade system. I made a video about the mini Saturn case around November. It's not made for a Raspberry Pi at all, I just thought it would be cool to stick a pi in there. I need to make a modified side panel for it though. At the moment there's no left side on the case where the USB ports and hdmi out are located.
