Why is my bike seat so uncomfortable?

- This was an old video I did a while back for a different channel. I think it fits better here.
The most common bike fit complaint I hear is about seats. Some riders just assume that the pain they're experiencing is normal, and are surprised and relieved to know that it's not and there's something we can do to fix it.

Watched about 10 different UA-cam videos after experiencing saddle pain on my new bike. By far the most well explained and concise video I've seen. Thank you!
Agreed
Is your bootie happy now?
I could ride any bike as a kid and not have any problem. Yesterday I bought a bike after years of not having ridden one. Now my ass hurts lol
My ass hurts from cycling. Then an older women spanked my butt how awkward, but then it wss better. What do you think?
Same, I bought bmx, my cervix bones hurt, lol.
Same.. And I am just 21..used to ride endlessly as 15yr old
@@harshsinghbindra7471 I'm 23 and bought a bike over the weekend and rode my ass hurts I haven't ridden since I was 15
You have no idea how happy I am to watch this video. I ride for 30 miles a day and I am getting sores and discomfort all the time, I tried different fitting and different saddles. The interesting thing is when I ride with my hybrid bike I don't get this discomfort, its only in my road bike and the only conclusion I came with was it must be my handle bar position and your video just confirmed it scientifically. Most other videos I watched talked about saddle without mentioning handlebar.
I'm grateful for this information ... keep up the great channel!
One of the best explanations to saddle soreness that I can find. Thank you.
Thanks for the way in which you presented this video. Currently have fractured toes so not able to ride my bike at this time. But my toes won't stop me from figuring out why I had so much pain when riding. Will re-watch this video somewhere in the coming weeks and get a few photos taken so I can adjust certain things (learning is the key for me in many things, Learning nothing isn't an option, something new each day No matter what it is, benefits me immensely). Cheers
This video helped me solve the problem. I bought a wheel extender and IMMEDIATELY senced a big relief. Even the guy in the store was telling me it couldn't have anything with the pain in the butt. He was wrong. Thank you, SIR!
The best video illustrating all this...short and sweet and to the point, clear explanation. Thank you.
Thank you, at long last. I've found someone who can explain why I've been through no less than 9 saddles (with varying mild successes and failures). I began to think it was me expecting too much from a saddle. All this despite 2 bike fits which have always felt like they only cured some of my problem. I have researched loads and only your channel most recently and now seem to be getting the answers I've been searching for, all to do now is put it into practice, I hope!
And has that worked? It's a bit worrying that 2 bike fits, which should take into account your personal physiological set up, haven't solved it but a 5 minute video about generic set up might?
Finally, someone who knows what there talking about. I have been a cyclist for most of my life. The last 12 years I have struggled with blood in my urine after long rides. I think this video may help me. Thanks!
Extremely useful and competent.
The Explanation take into consideration Aspects that usually are not being taken into consideration.
Massimiliano Volpi thank you..
I have seen every video relating to seat position on you tube and this is just the real perfect one! Love the clear pelvic, spine and arms images you are using to represent the body and the different outcomes based on position; so clever. Very well done!!!
Great explanation of anatomy relative to bike. Never considered handlebar reach but makes sense.
+ATLUGABill thank you!
That has cleared alot up for me and simply explained with the use of your diagrams. Top notch thank you
When we sit in a chair in the normal position, we are not just resting on the pelvis, we are also resting on the back of the thighs, which distributes the the downward pressure of our upper-body's mass weight and spreads it out. When we are cycling, we can no longer distribute the downward mass pressure along our thighs, as our thighs have nothing to rest on...in fact, they are working very hard. The only other place where we can distribute some of the upper-body's downward mass pressure is at the handlebars, which is why our shoulders and arms and hands get fatigued.
However, the trick is to direct the downward mass pressure towards our legs in the most optimal way, thereby utilising gravity as well as our muscles to move us forward. Optimal sitting position would have our body's centre of gravity directly over the the centre of the pedal crank shaft which should, in theory, bring a near equalisation of pressure to the pelvis, shoulders, arms, and hands.
Needless to say, but the heavier one is, the more problematic seat discomfort might be. Losing weight will help a great deal.
Truly the best 👌 explanation of saddle soreness on UA-cam. Thank you & great job 👍
Wow! Truly insightful. Thank you for such a good job done here
Best on bike saddle theory Ive seen yet
Demystifyied a lot! Thanks.
God must have sent you! I've genuinely been looking for so long for decent information on this complex side of things and you are spot on in every single one of your videos!!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! Keep up the amazing work
Love the visual explanation!!
Best video I’ve seen in years!
Holy moly!!! I was looking for some video out of frustration but accidentally learned how to actually properly sit on a bike. Unexpected but awesome!! 😁
Sure helped me out, i had a sore butt after only 10-13 miles. Now, I'll work on those adjustments you thought me. Thanks, keep riding. 👍
This is the best video I have ever watched to learn something. THANK YOU
I absolutely love the visual explanation a real masterpiece of effort put in to explain such intricate details thanks
Love the cutout slide demo. Very clear
I know I’m years later but dude! This is exactly what I needed
Even after many years few videos makes absolute sense. This would list top among them.
Thanks mate, brilliant explanation.
I just bought an exercise bike and I ordered a new seat this morning. I rode it for 5 minutes and it was too painful. I am 5’1”. This was extremely insightful! Thank you.
Wow, the visual says it all. Great job. 4 thumbs up...
Awesome video, brilliantly explained!
The best video ever, very nice and ergonomic
Hi whilst the lack of yellow and red is a good thing, the red line suggests another issue i.e. a greater degree of lateral movement left to right and forward and backward. Which in itself can lead to other issues away from the saddle (knee pain, hip pain etc).
wow. Amazing. These diagrams!! WOW! Thank you for this video. SO HELPFUL!
Wow.. impressed by the effort ❤️
Well done video 🙌🏼
Great job, way better than the others
the best video on the subject.
Very useful Thanks
woow just woow. kudos to you. Now i correctly understood. Many many thanks
that was excellent thankyou
Excelent explanation
Frank Netter was an unbelievably talented. I always take my copy to the doctor to improve communication. I call it the “shop manual.”
So if my coccyx hurts, which way do I adjust my bars? I use to do triathlons for a few years and never had the pain in my coccyx like this so I am not sure where the adjustments need to be made. Granted, it has been about ten years since my riding days and I recently bought a hybrid bike to do trails and hard pack riding. One ride on a paved trail hurt my tail bone so much it was hard to sit down. Thanks for the video, love the diagrams and illustrations. Keep doing what you do. Cheers.
Hi, how often do we have to cahnge the saddle in a route bike? thank you from Houston, TX
I think slouching in the chair all my life has helped my pelvic position to the positive.
Ah, the Netflix Flex.
The simple answer, one that the bike industry doesn't want folks to figure out is, not enough padding.
The primary market the bike industry focuses on, is racing, be it road or dirt, thus their agenda is lighter and lighter bikes and componentry.
The result being seats lack adequate padding and width.
My old school 26" XC bike has a quality Tioga 200mm wide gel comfort seat. It weights just under 500g. I just started doing 42km rides on an abandoned railway line that's been repurposed as a hiking and riding trial.
I also don't wear another scam product, padded pants (take one apart and see how useless the thin padding is on these grossly overpriced and needless things), and I feel zero discomfort.
This year I'm buying two variants of my Tioga, 155 and 175mm widths, to test saddle width while utilising the same amount of thick gel padding.
I don't compete, so a 500g saddle is not an issue..and even if I did compete, I doubt an extra 350g will severely hinder my performance. I can do a 3 day fast and drop 2kg is weight is an issue.
When you talk about saddle discomfort, does it includes chafing?
Within 15 minutes of riding a bike I was numb all the way up to my belly button. I couldn't put further pressure toward the back due to tailbone pain.
So creative
Thank you for the info. Just gotten back on a bike after 20yrs. Notice I am having hip discomfort which I assume is poor setup. It is a Schwinn hybrid from a big box store so I do not believe there is a whole lot of adjustment. Gonna keep fiddling with it anyway. At least I know why I am uncomfortable after several miles.
Thanks for that is very clear-Can I move my seat a bit forward then, would that have the same effect?txs
quite the sound track...
an employee at my local bike shop suggested that i should sit in such a way on the saddle that i leave a finger size gap of the saddle sticking out at the back.. i own a Selle dynamic. When i sit this way .. i feel my legs generate more power but at the same time i feel quite a bit of discomfort in the perineum. I always thought that one has to sit on a road bike seat like how one sits on a chair. Am i getting the right advice here? your advice would mean a lot. thanks
Is it possible having foot pain by using the wrong saddle ?
You are amazing. Thank you for the education. where are you located?
+Mario Javier thank you for watching. I'm in Grand Junction, Colorado
Sounds great but how exactly do you move your bars 😅😅
How can I figure out what the best position is for me? I don’t know my own body at all.
thanks. but why matching the bar Position instead of the saddle? if i am constantly moving back on the saddle, the first thing i would do is putting it more forward. of course only so much as the knee remains above the Pedal.
you're correct that at times we can get away with just moving the saddle forward. This can help to bring the seat where the hips are already trying to be, when we have plenty of room to move forward and still have the hips far enough back behind the feet.
But in many cases when we ask the question "Why am I sliding forward on the saddle?" or "Why do I have groin pain on the bike?", bar reach and drop are the major cause and many riders are at a point where if they move the saddle further forward they will be upsetting the balance of the hips/knee position relative to the feet. At best this might only affect the efficiency of the pedal stroke, but in many cases it has a real chance to worsen the balance on the seat itself and create worse saddle issues and potentially new handlebar/hand issues.
This is why I prefer to get the hips first into their optimal position relative to the feet (saddle high enough and aft enough) and then correctly set the handlebar position such that it's not negatively affecting the way the pelvis rests on the saddle
Thanks a lot for your answer! Very helpful
Thanks for the answer, but could you please shed some light on the best hip to feet position?
How do I find your explanation of knee pain and injury. I'm getting old (73) but swim 3 hours a week and try to walk 8,000 steps a day . So fairly fit. Bought a bike a few months back and within a month I couldn't walk. X-rays and sonograms said I had only sprained the knee, small holes in the ligaments but nothing torn. Doing all the exercises prescribed and have carefully set my bike to fit my body. Three months being careful.
Got on the bike yesterday and today I am once again an invalid. Exactly the same injury has flared up again.
Do you have a video showing how the knee works like this one on the Pelvis? I need to understand what's happening here.
Is your seat position high enough? Too low of a seat can destroy the knees.
so the solution is not to buy a new seat, which I just did, but to adjust the handlebar?
My question is this: How Do I know if it is correct before causing pain? My problem is, that it doesn't feel uncomfortable instantly. Only after I have started riding. Only then does my pelvis bone area in my crotch get sore, and then it's a poor experience thereafter and for the next 3 days my arse is sore no matter what it touches.
Sitting on the factory seat, it feels like no matter my position, it hurts in those spots. So I just received from Amazon a "Wide Seat" bike seat. It hasw more of a curved area where the buttocks go, and it still has the nose of the seat going between the legs in the crotch. It's wide, it seems cushy ( I haven't installed it yet) but as a test, I just put it on my chair and sat on it, and my pelvic bones are still pressed and still hurt. So what you are saying is it is not the seat but the handlebar? I understand but my butt doesn't.
Haven't sat on a bike in 20 years. I was trying to purchase one yesterday and all them shits was painful
So I sit in the middle of my bike shall I move my bars back
My butt was cramp from 3 hours cycling. An stranger older woman hit me on my butt, maybe 20 times, how awkward, but then it was better. What do you think ??
My bike seat feels like brick but 10x harder
I think I need a motorbike wide handlebar for my bike then....
Well thank you for why my ass hurts but now.... Show me some tutorial how can I changed it?
Let me know when you find a good video for that...in the same boat 😂
Very interesting but Annoying music distracts from content :)
Kiss industrial bike seat .p.s. offset.
Why would you put on such loud distracting music during the video? So unnecessary.
No, my saddle is just hard and narrow
Well change it to a wide thick padded badboy with a back rest. Best thing I ever did. Now when I'm on my ebike. It's like I'm on a moving couch. Super comfortable. Can ride 20 miles a day. And not feel sore.
it's a garbage design for a seat. It makes no sense.
Yeah. Let’s just rest the entire weight of your body on your taint.
@@spinningbackkick6021 that's pretty much what it feels like to use one, lol
Good old bike seat is the answer. The problem is a bad so-called modern design. Get one old fashion seat the problem is resolved forever.....
Nope. Wrong! It's not about you/your anatomy. It's about the bike, the seat. You're just not supposed to be riding a bike non stop for more than a few minutes, maximum 15 minutes at a time, and half the time you probably should be standing up, not sitting down. But they want you to ride dozens of miles, even hundreds of miles, or more on bumpy roads. That's the hype. Don't believe it. Solution: short bike trips, soft, cushioned saddle, the right kind of shock absorbers/suspension setup, front and rear, possibly. Do more with saddle shocks, too. Forget the long, painful bike tours. Only problems is you'll likely look like a nincompoop, on such a comfortable bike. You'll likely be the laughing stock of your town. But cycling engineers could hide such creature comforts if they wanted to and still keep bikes nice and light so you could ride a little longer before your butt starts to hurt.
I dont want a medecin class... i just want a simple answer. Disliked. No sub.
Just lowered my seat a few minutes ago after watching this video and the previous one. Huge difference from a few centimeters!!! :-o Thanks!
