We have green space behind our lot that is all poplars, so as you can imagine, we get major suckering in beds and the lawn. We don’t want the main trees to die. Will applications on the suckers cause the mother trees to die. Zone 3 🇨🇦🍁👏
Alot of trees will sucker at the base of the tree but poplar ans aspen will send out runners to try and survive of course they grow fast so thats why their planted but their root system is a nightmare. I have a few more of them to take down arrgh.
Thank you very much for this! I have this problem, but the original tree is still living. The roots originate from a flowering cherry/plum in my neighbours yard. It’s likely 60 years old. The tree roots have completely taken over my large front garden bed. I have been digging them and the little sucker trees out steadily for a month and still keep finding more. Some are frighteningly large (6” in diameter) and run upwards of 15 to 20 metres from the tree. I’ve considered using Roundup on the roots in my garden I can’t remove, but am concerned about killing my neighbour’s tree. I have discussed this with my neighbour. He said it wouldn’t break his heart if the cherry/plum tree died as a result. Do you know if treating the roots in my yard will affect the originating tree? Many thanks.
