Why the Galactic Concordance Treaty Failed

  • The Galactic Concordance Treaty was flawed from its conception. It was too harsh in the wrong places and too lenient in other areas. The treaty also led to the demilitarization of the New Republic, which made the faction helpless when the First Order appeared.

Mon Mothma's problem was that she wanted to recreate the pacifistic demilitarized Galactic Republic. Even the rebellion's official name was "Alliance to restore THE republic" not A republic or to create a New Republic.
However she didn't realized that a) not everyone liked the Galactic Republic and b) that times have changed.

*[I originally posted this under another thread, but it seems appropriate here]*
The whole de-militarization thing was just _too overboard and unrealistic._
Not only was the Imperial remnant still a powerful force, but the Galaxy was still a chaotic and nasty place.
A ethical leader like Mon Mothma should have been concerned about the billions of 'people' still living in slavery and under threat of genocide in the hell hole that was outside the core systems.
Even if the First Order never arose the New Republic was making a _morally indefensible decision_ - like Superman sitting back and watching a school bus plunge over a cliff while he's having a picnic with Louis … " we're ok".
[Or to be more accurate, while half the school children get sold into sexual slavery and the other half get massacred for being the wrong ethnic group].
Assuming the Imperials kept their side of the bargain - a very naive view…, there were still a lot of bushfire wars and major pirate and crime gangs, and very evil (for want of a better word) governments out there.
And as a student of history (having lived through the most tumultuous recent part of it), she should have known that what allowed the Clone Wars to happen was the weakness and _lack of military authority_ of the Old Republic. If they had had a strong central Navy the Trade Federation would have never needed to be armed up and deputised as the local sheriff/military. And thus the CIS could never have arisen.
And a strong New Republic Military could not only have forced the Imperial remnants to unconditionally surrender, perhaps even getting justice for the leadership that had committed war crimes, but more importantly, they could have restored order and justice to the rest of the Galaxy.
Fast reaction forces take down pirates and slavers - what about the Wookies and the Trandosians? Just hope those big lizards have learnt their lesson and won't try again?
And then there's the Hutts, that lot need taking down, and you need a lot of big guns for that.
The sensible option would have been to mass produce fast Mon Cala cruisers to patrol the more lawless regions and steadily bring order _and peace_ to them. Mon Cala ships don't rule by fear of planetary bombardment, but they scare other ship's captains cause they are fast and incredibly hard to disable, so taking them down or getting away is a hard task. But they are not a gun aimed at your head like a ISD was, they are instead the perfect patrol ship.
As it was, the New Republic de-militarization abrogated all responsibility to *protect its citizens* and would have left a lot of them reminiscing about the old days under the Empire, when at least there was stability, if no freedom.
A bit like how you would miss the former Soviet Union if your Homeland was now embroiled in a brutal civil war and ethic cleansing.

@@casbot71 I think it would be not the best way to fight the Empire and force them to unconditional surrender. In legends it took more than a decade and in the end the peace was made NOT without conditions, but on fair terms. To subdude the Empire would have ment fighting them to the bitter end, and I bet that would have been also a fight of many years. Hard to believe that the New Republic would have the stamina to do so. I guess many people wanted peace and peace now, not send their loved ones to die in the cold space over some distant worlds on which great parts of the population even reject the "liberation" (since the Empire had quite support in the Core, I guess.
Peace through negotiation and on fair terms was not the worst option, but it had to be made with more common sense.

      What was the practical alternative?
Even most former rebels were sick of fighting, there were thousands of worlds that had entrenched former Imperial officials that would have taken years to dig out and trying to do so would have meant horrific ground fighting. That wouldn't help establish any kind of faith in a new government.

Some of the remnant escaped to the unknown region and surely after jakku, New Republic spies and New Republic intelligence must have picked up a surge of imperial forces escaping to that unknown space but couldn't do anything after the galactic concordance and the demilitarisation of the nr fleet gave the first order a swift blow in 34 aby after the nr had become selfish and weren't helping people who needed their help. Also during the time of the mandalorian they are a big joke as they can barely overthrow bounty hunters attacking their poorly demilitarized freighters and ships. Hence the reason as to why people consolidated with new republic veterans who had witnessed a totalitarian government fall only to see their own as no better if not worse off at times. They had fought for nothing knowing that the empire was still out there and could come back more powerful and diminish their tiresome work at being overwhelmed and still having the courage and hope for others to fight that very tyranny. Tis an unfortunate end as to why the nr failed. They didn't need to demilitarise. They could have gone to planets who need or don't need their help whilst maintaining a peaceful military government who cared about good and more so non violence that would inspire the millions to stand up for their own and not rely on a big ass military to save them. Hence the description through clone wars tv show

Instead Britain and France were the main countries enforcing the treaty which lead to the the depression of the German economy. Ultimately the depression would allow a radical like Hitler to rise to promincance in German politics. Also the treaty of Versailles would lead to Japan and Italy feeling as though they were not appreciated for their help to the allies in WWI leading them to join Germany in WWII.

The new republic wanted a break from the previous governments so moving from the old capital and not having a massive military was a deliberate choice. @@JeffreyPiatt ya Except the entire inspiration for the New Order going to the Unknown Regions to rebuild is based on Nazi's going to Argentina after WW2. Which is adept since you know the Empire is inspired by the Nazis. Going by that logic the Sequels propose a situation like the nation of Argentina becoming a World Superpower thanks to Nazi defectors and the allies/Soviets all disarming unilaterally despite all the internal and international problems that would create even for a World without evil Nazi's as a threat. It would be like Argentina winning the Falkans War cause the UK just disarmed its entire fleet and refused to have the means of protecting itself. And in the middle of this Falkans War scenerio the nation of Argentina now led by Adolf Hilter (who escaped Berlin) leds the nation in invading the UK and conquering the rest of Europe once again.

I really, really don't like Woodrow Wilson, but I don't think you can lay the blame for Versailles and a resurgent Germany at his feet. Not even at Britain's. It was France. They were incredibly harsh on the Germans, and their occupation of the Ruhr was especially harsh, being a propaganda goldmine for the Nazis later on because of the misconduct of the vengeful French occupation forces. Then there was the reparations, which caused the iconic inflation crisis of Weimar Germany which caused a deep distrust of democracy itself in Germany, and allowed the Nazis to rise to power. Meanwhile Britain and the US were trying to lessen up the harshness of Versaille, and America even propping up the Weimar economy for a while until the Depression. Because of the lesson the Allies learned from Versailles, they made sure after WW2 to bring Germany into NATO and build it back up, to prevent another resurgence.

I remember reading that lots of the death on the French side during WW1 was due to incompetent General who were used to fighting old wars as well as them being very brutal toward their own troops, not necessary the skill of the other army.
I recalled hearing about a General who has his scouts executed because they order the stop of the army because they the enemy ready to Ambush the Army, the general then order his troop to march through the Ambush. I think the same general also had a Tribunal to tried his own solder who were wounded in battle, he would claim that many of the wounds was self inflicted by the soldier and have them imprisoned or executed them. He would also crucify his own soldier as cowards and deserter in front of the Trenches so enemy can shoot them. Lot of the stuff that happen later became the base for the movie Many Wars Ago.

So what will the treaty to end the First Order look like?
The best solution IMHO is "we agree to keep killing you, unless* you totally surrender".
*Only applies to troopers who were kidnapped as children, they get a get out of jail free card if they kill their superiors. That'll make maintaining cohesion difficult for the First Order remnants.
As for the New New Republic military - apparently it's a ad hoc group under the control of Lando Calrissian.

Completely correct. If she "simply" converted the military mostly... into a larger civilian police force, and integrated the rest into the local defenses..things would have gone differently; the FIRST ORDER, would less likely have formed -but even if they did, they wouldn't have been even half as powerful. When the DARK FLEET, first attacked, the responses to it, wouldn't have been so little, nearly too late. When it was located, at it's home base, it would have been decimated far more swiftly...with far fewer casualties.

    1) Le traité de Versailles wasn't the main economic problem in Germany, it was the Krach (We have the numbers, they could amply pay the reparation according to their budget) + no other entente nation would have signed peace with Germany and have footed the bill for it while their own lands and cities got destroyed 2) The Tsar failed because of his incompetence, putting that on Wilson's back is simply wrong 3) The guy created the first global international organisation centered on avoiding wars and instigated a worlwide interest in peace and equality. It ended up failing but was an honest try. Before jabbing at historical figures and international crisis make sure you study them thoroughly, rapid kitchen-counter analysis don't cut it in that field. That's why I like your content too, very interesting political analysis of the inner working of a galaxy far far away. Cheers and keep the content running.

It seemed like they wanted to reduce the Empire remnant to a vassel state. Reduce the ablity to govern and defend themselves so then they had to rely on the New Republic as they couldn't deploy their own troopers. Also what was to stop the new Republic reducing the EMpires orders in their own section of space? It's like they were going to slowly throttle the Empire but making sure it had no choice but to join. Problem here was Mothma was too rigid in her vision it seems and not able to be flexible. If any thing the new Republic just seemed to reinstate the old status quo. I'm just wondering if there are any more Imperial holdouts. Like ones in the core world that accepted the concordence but have dropped some of Palpetines views for different ones? It would be sad to see the Empire snuffed out.

Rian Johnson was fully aware in order to save Phasma from Force awakens and put her in Last Jedi is to have her own book and comic. He could've consulted with the writers of the Phasma books(like he did with Claudia Gray) and erase DJ entirely and Make Phasma Finn's Devil Shoulder while she in her bounty hunter Disguise. The Live Free and Don't Join ideology can works perfectly coming from her. Because she did all these selfish actions, including betraying her allies to survive.

Rather than vision she seemed like a dangerous deluded person, like I wonder how she was able to lead the rebel alliance, she does not seem full use of her mental capabilities. I mean the moment she suggested those things I could literally see a military coup happening (Or not cause people seem to share her vision and moral) I mean I understand the idea of peace and all. But when someone see the Imperial Remmant not comming to surrender. Someone should have said (And I think Leia did) "Hey guys, maybe this is not the right time to disarm?"

Wellllll....technically, it wasn't Wilson's treaty at Versailles; Wilson is on record as wanting more lenient terms for the Germans, while France and the others--having been more directly affected than America--wanted Germany to pay. Wilson became ill shortly after arriving and it's suspected he came down with the (badly named) Spanish Flu, the pandemic of his day. Since the flu epidemic of 1918-1919 killed mostly *younger* victims, Wilson did recover so he could return to the peace talks, but by all reports he was basically exhausted and seemed not quite "there." Since survivors of the 1918 flu reported sleep disturbances, depression, mental distraction, dizziness, and difficulties coping at work, it's believed now that Wilson was suffering from these after effects (particularly the mental distraction) and that France and Britain took advantage of this. French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau told Wilson: "America is far away, protected by the ocean. Not even Napoleon himself could touch England. You are both sheltered; we are not." France had been the country most physically scarred by the war and they wanted STEEP reparations. And the British wartime coalition was re-elected with a policy of squeezing the German "'til the pips squeak." Though in private Lloyd George opposed revenge and attempted to compromise between Clemenceau's demands and the Wilson's Fourteen Points, and he wanted terms of reparation that would not cripple the German economy, so that Germany would remain a viable economic power and trading partner, and maintain a European balance of power to thwart a French attempt to establish itself as the dominant European power (a revived Germany would be a counterweight to France and a deterrent to Bolshevik Russia), in the end by arguing that British war pensions and widows' allowances should be included in the German reparation sum, Lloyd George ensured that a *large* amount would go to the British Empire.

For the record Woodrow Wilson was not responsible for the Treaty of Versailles. That was Europe as a whole and specifically Prime Minister Clemenseue who wanted to make Germany a "nation of potato farmers". England and the US were more for a light hand but France had her way. Alot of it not only had to do with resentment of the first world war which actually was more the Hapsburg Dynasty's fault than Germany, but also resentment for the loss of the Franco-Prussian war which was responsible for the unification of Germany. Woodrow Wilson actually signed a different treaty with Germany which was way more lenient. Not say he wasnt a flawed president, in fact I despise him, but rather he really didn't have a lot of say in global affairs despite his speeches on the "rights of nation's self determination".

Because the New Republic didn't have resources to maintain control over all the Empire and would have to supress dozens of pro-imperial uprisings (which would go against the whole idea behind the Alliance).
Not even mentioning that full annexation would mean disbanding *all* existing military forces, administration, law enforcement etc.
Best case scenario would be billions of jobless men and women, whose only skills involve warfare, turning the galaxy into a playground for numerous pro-imperial terrorist cells, raider gangs and mercenary groups.
In worst case scenario the remaining military forces would realise that their fatherland is going to perish and they will be left without a job, home, or purpose, turning an enemy ready to surrender into an enemy ready to fight to the death
