Washington was the humble man who led the republic in it's time of need. He was the calm steady hand who took only the power needed to ensure the protection of the States. I really liked the politics of the prequel era and to see how palpatine manipulated the entire senate. I really enjoyed the expansions on how the Senate worked. A really interesting read would be palpatine's revisions to Machiavelli's "The Princes", seeing how palpatine would look at that book and his suggestions on gaining and securing power in a more Democratic society that 16th century Italy. Palpatine's patience really helped him perform salami tactics, where you never make any large moves. You take, what seems logical and inconsequential steps towards your ultimate goal. All while your opponents don't exactly know what you are doing or how to stop you until it is too late.

He's a lot like Joseph Stalin.
Stalin, unlike other dictators such as Hitler, Mussolini or Lenin wasn't a good speaker. He didn't make loud gravitas speeches, instead he was silent.
Stalin was a very good listener, and knew how to play people. It's ultimately how he became head of state, he used his bureaucratic office to give his allies power while also making his rivals seem incompetent.
Ultimately through this, he was able to gain uncontested authority over the nation.

    One thing:
The Galactic Republic DID have checks and balances.
The senate debated and passed laws, they also elected the Chancellor. The senate also had control of the Jedi Order, and could order them to investigate crimes.
The chancellor had the veto power and could be elected twice (5 year terms)
War powers rested with the Senate as per the Ruusan reformations.
The judicial department investigated, prosecuted, and punished crimes in collaboration with the Jedi Order.
However, palpatine gamed the system by fabricating the Clone Wars. Feeding on the Galaxy’s fear of someone suddenly having a huge army at their disposal after 1,000 years of no major military engagements.

This past semester, I took a class on the American Revolution and Constitution and in drafting our current constitution, one version (the New Jersey Plan) allowed for the removal of the President of the United States from office by Congress from the application of a majority of state governors as a proposed check. The empire sold the story that he was still loyal to the Jedi during the war and that they orchestrated the war to take control of the senate. The clone wars was a distraction so they could gain control of the military assassinate Palpatine and arrest all opposition. Basically blaming the Jedi and Dooku for everything he did ruining his name

In legends continuity wasn’t one of Palpatine’s main reasons for creating the Empire was to combat the Yuuzhan Vong if so then in a way you could argue Palpatine was trying to save the galaxy though obviously that’s not exactly how he saw it I do know the New Republic was extremely unprepared for the threat and had nearly lost before a sentient planet intervened if I’m wrong please feel free to correct me as I never really read the comics or books on the topic of this video however I’d say the reason the senate couldn’t remove his power is bc he was the senate
Sidenote: Why rename the Alliance the New Republic I mean the Empire was once the Republic wouldn’t the Alliance consider the fact that naming their government the New Republic would only make the citizens rebel out of fear that the New Republic would just become another Empire a New Empire so to speak the Galactic Alliance sounds better anyways

    • @ZoeMalDoran
      @ZoeMalDoran 3 роки тому +1

We know Palpatine was working towards the Sith plan (destroy the Jedi and rule the galaxy) long before he found out about the Yuuzhan Vong. When he did find out, they became something he could point at as "Yeah, this is why we need the Empire", as was the case when he needed to convince Thrawn to destroy Outbound Flight, but Palpatine would have done almost exactly the same things if the Vong weren't coming because the endgame was always the Sith's revenge... followed by him getting immortality.
Thrawn's primary goal was always to keep the Chiss safe. In his mind, that eventually necessitated a central galactic authority that knew what it was doing in order to defeat the Vong with as few Chiss casualties as possible, hence creating the Empire of the Hand, trying to rally the Empire 5 years after Endor, and so on.
In-universe, the jury is out on whether Palpatine had genuinely created the Empire to fight the Vong. Some believe that was the reason, others feel that the Empire would have lost anyway because they couldn't even beat the Rebellion, and forming the Empire was solely for Palpatine's benefit.
Now, as for the re-name. The formal name for the Rebel Alliance was always (in universe at least) "The Alliance to Restore the Republic" after the various factions came together with the Corellian Treaty. Their reasoning was that the Empire was illegitimate and that they should be bringing the Republic back. If memory serves, after Endor they became the Alliance of Free Planets, then finally the New Republic after they liberated Coruscant... and then the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances after Cal Omas was elected.

I'm pretty sure Queen Padme could move for a vote of no-confidence because Naboo was part of the Republic senate, and as Palps was the acting senator at the time, basically there with the blessing of the Naboo ruler. So anything Padme says or does in that regard if Palps is present is probably treated as if Palpatine himself had made the proposal for a vote of no-confidence, with the idea being as Naboo's representative and voice in the senate Palpatine basically is just the monarch/governments voice while they are not present themselves, but when they are present anything they said is given the same weight and respect as if Palpatine said it. So...that's how I think they could dew it.
