    Taken on 9/3/21.
    Video of a ride on Montauk Train 2798, a.k.a the Cannonball, on its entire route from Penn Station to Montauk. The Cannonball is a seasonal Friday express service to/from the Hamptons and Montauk. This train is geared towards (and attracts) affluent residents from New York City going towards seaside communities in the Hamptons. A total of 115.8 mi (186.4 km) from end to end, taking this train offers the longest single ride in the LIRR system. It also offers the longest express segment, at 74.3 miles between Penn Station and Westhampton, its following stop.
    This train takes longer than its Thursday counterpart by 10 minutes because it requires 2 stops to accommodate all passengers, as the platforms at all the Hamptons stops (and Montauk) can only hold 6 cars at a time. The Thursday train is typically a 6-car train instead of a 12-car train.
    Here's the trip rundown:

    2:43:29 - 2:43:39 Lead Engine 501 with the Cannonball logo stationed at Montauk after completing its 2 hour 46 minute trip
    2:43:39 - 2:44:08 Cannonball train departing Montauk out of service
    The Cannonball begins underneath the busy streets of Manhattan in NYC, then travels across the East River into Queens. After exiting the tunnel in Long Island City, the entire trip is either above ground, at-grade, or open-cut. It passes through the heart of the LIRR system in Jamaica, and heads southward into suburban Long Island. The train breezes through the south shore of Nassau County, and into Suffolk County, making its way through less developed, mainly residential neighborhoods with small downtown areas.
    After entering Suffolk County, the service (along with the Montauk Branch) operates through less developed towns and villages, a stark contrast from the view once leaving the tunnel portal heading into Queens. For large segments through central Suffolk County, the train passes along trees, parks, and wildlife areas. Its segment on the South Fork of Long Island contains some of the most remote and wealthiest areas on the system. The Montauk Branch also becomes predominantly single tracked east of Patchogue station (with some sidings between Patchogue and Montauk).
    The Cannonball train for the 2021 season differs in several ways from service provided in 2019 and prior years. For the 2021 season, the eastbound train consists of 8-11 cars (instead of 12 cars), with one diesel engine on each end. The Hamptons Reserve service is not available for this train, and trains charge off-peak fares ($22.25 vs the typical $30.50 fare). Also, the Sunday return trip from Montauk to Penn Station is not provided. The Cannonball was suspended entirely in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

    I rode the LIRR so much as a kid. When I was a young teen I would take the train to my grandparents all the time. Or to this girls house I was dating. A lot of times I had the same conductor since I took the same train most of the time.one time I had a few bags with me because I was going from my grandparents to the airport to Cincinnati.he asked where I was going and I told him and he said I was on the wrong train joking about this train not stopping in Cincinnati. After that every time I took that train he would walk but me and yell out next stop Cincinnati! People would all look so confused haha.. good times. I was like 13 and felt so free and like an adult riding the train all over the island.

    Curiously, does the train switch from electric to diesel right after leaving the tunnel or does it do that after passing Babylon station, since it ran through the Babylon branch instead of via the main line and the Central branch?

    • @NYCTA1

      From what I've read regarding this, they only operate on third rail power until leaving the tunnel. Apparently the electric mode on those locomotives aren't too efficient to operate on.

    I wish you would have angled the camera forward just a bit so things didn’t just rush buy. It would have ‘slowed down’ the scenery going buy and made it easier to watch. Especially things in the foreground. Try it next time, you will notice a big difference. Just a suggestion and an opinion, do what you want obviously, it’s your video. My cousin works for a production company that has worked on some big movies, some music videos in atlanta and a lot of commercials.she told me that once and that it makes for a much better viewing experience for people.

    • @NYCTA1
      @NYCTA1  2 роки тому +1

      Sure, any recommendation is welcome. Unfortunately the train that day was too packed for me to have enough space to easily move around and do what you suggest without bothering anyone (someone was sitting next to me for most of the ride), there are some segments where I do try that out (approaching Jamaica and past East Hampton).
      I have done that in more recent videos, with the main issue being the light and reflection on sunny days. Although I have been looking at ways to counteract that.
