  • After testing around 300 cars at the Chasing Cars track, the facelifted 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance has recorded the quickest acceleration time of the lot. How quick? Watch on…
Priced from around $87,000, Tesla’s recently updated electric sedan is not only fast but a raft of updates have made the flagship dual-motor Performance version an all-round better machine to live with.
Tom Baker also puts the Tesla 3 Performance through the Chasing Cars range and efficiency test to judge its commuting and touring chops, revealing actual real-world urban and highway ranges.
And we breakdown all of the key changes to the interior and tech to judge whether the new facelift brings significant enough improvement in practicality and livability.

There’s a reason we didn’t test Track Mode. Tesla wouldn’t let us! It blocks Track Mode on Tesla press demo vehicles. We can’t evaluate something we can’t test. A shame, as it might be concealing a lot more fun for keen drivers. I’ve given you my straight opinion on everything we could, and did, test ourselves. -Tom

Appreciate the unavailability of track mode with the demo, though for example comparing the previous model 3 performance with track mode enabled (if you've had the pleasure), would have given you the opportunity to compare and make some informed commentary. Unfortuantely without the context, the latter part of the review comes across as a little incomplete / ill-informed, with comments on the soul and character of a high performance vehicle, without having tested the most performance oriented modes.
The rest of the review was great, but like others commenting, I was here to see a bit more, which unfortuantely wasn't possible with track mode unavailable for your demo vehicle.
Looking forward to your next M3P review with track mode (when Tesla release the chains)! 🔥

Why didn't you use the track mode?
Its not just for the track only. You can make it way more playful, and without turning off the controls, it even has a minimum esc mode.

I need to ask, as you were adamant in saying the M3P isn’t as fun, loose and enjoyable as things like a Mazda, Porsche and BMW, did you bother to put it in Track Mode? Tried this today with a friend. I’m waiting for one and he’s thinking about trading in his older 3P.
We both drive electric go-karts and came from fossil fuel cars-he had tuned Audis and I had tuned Volvos.
Back in 2017, I bought my first EV, a Model X. It felt too big, so I swapped it for a 3P in 2019.
Loved the 3P, but the old model was too noisy. After 80,500 fun kilometers and 4.5 years, I sold the 3P and got a 2023 Berlin YP. While the YP is practical, I missed the feeling of sitting low.
Now, I have to get this refreshed 3P Highland.
We discussed the car and were both surprised at how naturally we used the blinkers.
The low noise level and the quality of the adaptive dampers were impressive. The Hardware 4 cameras and seats were also great.
The styling looks "smart," and it’s clearly designed for better aerodynamics.
On brick roads, driving in sport mode and upping the speed gave a more "planted" feel than driving slower.
Acceleration felt slightly more oversteered than the older 3P, but it was still very easy to control. The steering wheel feels easy to turn even in sport mode.
If you want a more "lively" 3P, fitting square wheels/tires will yield more oversteer and even quicker acceleration times.
But the staggered wheels offer a safety net for regular people coming to an EV with supercar acceleration.
We saw no issues with our test car, it also had no noises on the inside.

Of course, the fact that this car allows one to tune in just about any amount of oversteer would seem to address this concern, but the reviewer goes on to say that would be inappropriate for the road. I have a 2019 Tesla Model 3 Performance with MountainPass Performance coilovers and 20” zero g wheels on Pirelli Pzeros. I was wondering if it was worth upgrading to the new Performance Model 3. I also have a modified BMW M3 with a manual transmission. The BMW is more fun to drive, but the Tesla is a better daily driver with gobs of power. The Tesla is also cheaper to own and operate. My wife has a Model Y Performance that we picked up 6 months ago.

Would love car reviewers to enter a destination in maps to show how road tripping works in a Tesla. I understand theyll navigate you from city to city and tell you were to stop and for how long - sometimes just a few of short 10-20 min stops to drive say between Syd-Melb

Yes, it is very easy. Usually Tesla navigation will tell you to charge at ~20% on the next stop, but it is much quicker to find charging at 5-10% instead.

      Better driving range..

Much better software and support in general.
      Better speaker system.
Faster charging system (11kw and 250kw) along with better infrastructure
      More storage\luggage space

      Heated seats for back row

Rattles in the dash. The air con cools your knees but not you face. The auto wipers are hopeless. Rattles are not covered under warranty after a year. It went back 5 times to the repair centre. So you think Porsches, Ferraris, Lambos, Bugattis etc should all be illegal? I agree, but only because most of them burn fuel in a completely inefficient combustion engine and spew toxic waste out, not because of speed!

It was reported that Tesla had 45,000 cars in excess production at the end of the quarter. Based on last year's annual sales this represents about 9 days inventory. Far below industry average. Legacy automakers are reporting exceeding 90 days inventory on popular models.

I had a Long Range 2021. Brilliant except it was falling apart after 30,000km. Both lower control arms replaced separately, radiator had a huge leak and the car had to be put on a flat bed truck, driver’s seat clicked back and forth under acceleration and braking, rear seats started to rattle and you could move them horizontally, glass roof made a huge cracking sound twice for no reason as though a branch from a tree had fallen on it. Rattles in the dash. The air con cools your knees but not you face. The auto wipers are hopeless. Rattles are not covered under warranty after a year. It went back 5 times to the repair centre. I loved the car for 5000km then it just fell apart. Never ever buying another $83k car from Tesla. The build quality is awful and you will regret buying it.
Oh yes, had a minor ding from someone hitting me in the rear bumper. Took 3 months to get fixed because Tesla is awful at getting the parts to the body shop.

Thats unlucky. I had a 2020 M3P and I had not one single complaint or issue about build quality. I went from an Audi SQ5 with an Exclusive Package build, to my M3P and I didn't miss the Audi at all. Now I am driving my 2024 M3P facelift and the build quality is even better. Tesla have really gone up regarding build. I am very happy with this bullet fast, comfortable ride. About 10 years ago I had a BMW M4 and that was a real PITA. I got rid of it after 18 months. Rattles that BMW could never fix and software that was appalling. Duds can happen in all brands.
