Imagine if you had to change out a light bulb by shutting off the breaker, climbing in the attic, pulling out the can, un-wiring it, coming back down, unscrewing the bulb, replacing it, going back up to the attic, putting it all back together and then turning the power back on.

DIY-ERS READ THIS! I just replaced my element without pulling the dishwasher, I just snaked my arm in there, unplugged the wires and swapped everything out by feel/limited visibility. The nuts are just nice and hand tight, no tools were required on mine. I have a couple pans under the washer now to be sure I’m not getting any drips before closing everything up.

Same , tight fit and done by feel but got it done without all the mess. Basically the same skills when you’re working on a car and have to start a fastener by hand with your arm jammed down in some tight space

This is a great tutorial. Not necessary to completely uninstall the dishwasher feeds, if enough slack has been left for tilting it back into the space. Killing the power is definitely a good idea though.

Recommend changing the order of the steps to turn water back on, check for leaks, then reinstall the cover panel. May even want to run a cycle and check for leaks before putting the cover panel back on.

Anyone watching this video, if you don't want to pull out the dishwasher and you have big arms like me, you can take out the sump for underneath access which is pretty easy. If you don't know how, look up the video from repair clinic titled "whirlpool replace pump and motor assembly". Once you pull out the assembly, you can very easily access the element retaining nuts without needing to pull out the dishwasher itself. Personally I found this much easier because my dishwasher wasn't installed with mounting brackets (I lost them) so pulling it out is a real pain.

Thanks for a very detail video. But i have a suggesstion for others because i got into this. Before you unhook wires and pipes check by pulling little because i had plenty of cable and pipes but since i followed this video i unhooked everything and it was hard to put it back specially water supply pipe which is the most hactic after a lot of spill. But still thank you for showing us to save 100’s of dollars. I changed it in 45$

Great suggestion-I did have leeway on my drain line and supply line, but not my electrical. Saved a lot of time, but still got a puddle when I tipped over the dishwasher-easier to wipe up on the kitchen floor than under the sink/washer.

Perfect video for what I needed to do. Specific instructions on tightening the nuts would be good, i.e. hand tighten, then use a wrench to do a 1/2 turn to create a waterproof seal without over-tightening. Thanks!

*** MAY HAVE TO RUN DIAGNOSTICS CYCLE TO RESET THE CONTROL ***
My dishwasher stopped cleaning and drying the dishes a week or so ago. I was able to find a burned out spot in the heating element, so ordered a replacement and followed this video to replace it. Great video, I found it very helpful and it made the replacement very easy.
Afterwards, I was still having trouble. No heat. I did some further investigation and ended up replacing the thermostat too, even though it tested fine and seemed quite coincidental for it to be out as well. Still, no heat...so I kept digging, and ended up having to run a diagnostics cycle on my machine to reset the heating control, and afterwards it is working properly.
I wanted to put this in a comment in case anyone else runs into a similar issue. I had to review the schematics, which were attached to the inside of the lower access panel, for instructions on how to run the diagnostic test.

    • @peteclark9881
      @peteclark9881 5 років тому +1

Had the exact same issue, burned out spot in the element, replaced and still wouldn't work. Ran the diagnostic test and got it heating again. Thanks!

Thank you!! You just save me money. I had to fix the pump and I guess while I did that and unplugged the dishwasher I didn't notice that the heating element wasn't working. So I thought I had to fix that now. After I saw your comment I did that diagnostic test and it just started working. So I didn't need to change anything. Thank you so much.

This video was very helpful, although I would caution that this process wound up being a much bigger hassle than I expected and at one point I was ready to give up and buy a new dishwasher. One suggestion I would make to make things easier is to try and pull the dishwasher out from under the counter before disconnecting the water and electric. My water pipe was really fiddly to disconnect when still under the counter and took a while to undo. I had plenty of leeway on both the water pipe and electric wiring so after I had installed the element, I raised the dishwasher up on blocks and then connected everything back up before lowering the unit and pushing back into place. All said and done it took me around 4 hours. Oh, and make sure your shut off valves work before you attempt this…

For repair clinic:Very well done video. Had no idea where to start until I stumbled on this. Thanks!
Some notes to make repair even easier for your viewers:1) it is **a lot** easier to disconnect water under the sink rather than at the unit. 2) my unit was installed with a wall plug. if there is enough play in wiring and plumbing hoses as was the case with mine, just slide the unit out and unplug from the wall. No need to mess with wiring, nuts, strain relief etc..
##For the manufacturer(s)##: could probably have made this unit a tad more serviceable and not require it to be pulled out to replace a heating element that is visible and easily accessed in situ....but maybe the element could have been made better so as not to crack and need replacement or service 😉

    Hi, quick question -
I need to replace the heating element on my dishwasher. The replacement part comes with two standard metal nuts to screw into the bottom of the dishwasher (reference 2:16 in the video). The plastic terminal nuts that were already on the dishwasher will not screw onto the new heating element threads, leaving what would have been covered by the old nuts exposed. My question is, how important is having the the plastic nuts over where the wires plug into? Is it a fire hazard if I use the metal nuts provided with the replacement heating element, since the terminals would be exposed? Thanks

I normally set my dishwasher to one hour fast mode and no need to dry as I ear dry it or wipe it with a microfiber but i noticed The other day when I open the dishwasher to add more stuff into the machine that the heating element ring is not fully lit only a portion say 1/4 of the ring is lit so does this mean it’s broken and needs to be replaced....The machine is not heavily used it’s only probably less than two years old

You really don't need to do all the brain surgery stuff in this video if you have slack enough on your water feed, drain line and electrical. Just pull the dishwasher out and lay it on it's back, unscrew the element, pop it out and put the new one on. Then keep the unit out and run a test run. Put a piece of paper towel underneath to verify no leaks. Then slap it back in. Done. Aside from running the wash cycle, 15 minutes to remove, 15 minutes to put it back.

This is in the wrong order you have to raise the feet and turn the two screws on the top of the dishwasher and pull it out of the cabinet before you can get to the wiring, and you should have enough play in it anyway that you could pull this out of the cabinet turn it on its side and work on it I have replaced the pump twice. I turn off the circuit breaker but I don't have to unhook any wires or hoses to pull it out of the cabinet and lay it on its side. Hell that's how you put all that stuff on in the first place., was outside the cabinet

QUESTION: this was easy enough to follow, and I was able to replace the heating element quickly and easily! However, as soon as I turned the power back on and tried a cycle, yes water heated, but it is now stuck on the wash cycle (I hear it draining, but it won't go to the rinse cycle or finish/stop! Just kept washing for over two hours until I noticed! I've reset it three times (factory reset by pressing the buttons in sequence) - could I have accidentally hooked the red and white wires on backward? Or are they on correctly if its running? Surely the timer didn't stop working at the exact same time that I put the new heating element in...any ideas why it's stuck on WASH and won't stop running? HELP!

Make sure there are no nuts on your element before inserting the element in the tub. The one I got came with smaller metal nuts that were the same threading as the long OEM white plastic nuts shown in the video. These metal nuts need to be removed before inserting, and discarded if the white nuts will work. Also, make sure there are no Styrofoam packaging particles sticking to either side of either washer or flange. Finally, my element had some electrical glue that had gotten on the flange, but thankfully not facing the washer. If the dried glue were touching the washer, it would compromise the fitting and might cause a leak.

My lower sprayer arm came loose, hit my heater element, which melted the arm edge, the impact jarred the element loose from a holder bracket, which allowed the heating element to dip down into the tub floor and burn it. This dishwasher can not be removed, previous homeowner installed tile floor on top of tile floor and there is no clearance to pull the unit out.
My plan is to patch the tub with epoxy. Install new holder brackets for the element, install a new sprayer arm...does that sound like it may work?
Does my scenario/explanation make sense, Or am I describing what happens when the element warps with age? Would one suspect the element stretched with age and popped off the holder bracket? Is there hope of a repair as I provided in my plan above? Thanks if you have time to address. ~ Hand washing like cave men until I fix it. Ha. : )
