Insightful and informative. I encourage you to send your children to the French immersion school. You will never regret. I am from Sierra Leone, I studied French in secondary school. I sat French at WAEC”O Level and A Level “ I pursued it at the University in Sierra Leone graduated as my major and taught it in schools. When I relocated to the United States when in my early 40s I realized the importance of learning a second language. Knowing that Spanish is the second popular language after English in the USA, I took advantage and studied Spanish. This enabled me to be employed as a Public Librarian. Right now I’m being paid salary differential for the French and Spanish I’m using in my interaction at work. I never regretted acquiring the two other languages. Children acquire languages faster before the critical period of 18 years. As for me because of the foundation in French language which is a Romance language like Spanish I found it easier to learn Spanish. Now I’m multilingual. Please encourage them to learn French in this part of the world, it is an additional skill which will open doors for them in the future.
Happy I came across this comment. This just looks like all nudge I needed because initially I wasn't having it with my husband when he suggested our son attends a French immersion school in Montreal. Now, I've seen beautiful reasons to support my husband in that regards and I'm hoping it will land him more and better opportunities in the future. I actually felt it will be too tough for him since he already started with English. I am so pumped and encouraged right now. ❤
Very thoughtful and informative. If you’re agnostic about morality and other social mores, another way of approaching this would be looking at annual school rankings done by the Fraser Institute. To be clear, don’t take the rankings as gospel but use them as a resource to support other considerations that are important to you. Basically, the rankings rank schools by academic outcomes. Another thing is socioeconomic factors of a suburb generally have a strong correlation to behaviour and academic outcomes. Children in poor suburbs that attend schools with a majority of kids from poor socioeconomic backgrounds tend not to do well. I’m generalising a lot for the sake of brevity. But the point is if you’re not going to choose a fee paying private school then your choice of suburb is very important. By this I mean, if you just think of renting in the cheapest suburb you can find, you might save money but find yourself in a poor performing school district I advise thinking about university in collaboration with your primary/high school choices. Not all universities in Canada are created equally and there are elite universities, middle of the road and run of the mill ones. Unfortunately, high status, high paying jobs in law, investment banking, journalism, politics, etc tend to employ graduates from a narrow pool of elite universities. Here’s a way to research this. Look at the top 100 graduate employers, then on their websites look at recent graduate profiles and you will see patterns of which universities and degrees are advantageous. You can also see online which high schools tend to successfully place students in elite universities. Finally, the school system is predicated on parental involvement. That is to say, parents are generally expected to provide a disciplinary framework in the home, encourage habits like reading daily and to some extent cater for their extra curricular needs like sports clubs. I’ve generalised this point. However, the school expects you to let them know if you have any concerns or uncertainties throughout your child’s education. Ask questions, ask for support. If you expect your kids to have a Nigerian like school experience you will be disappointed. Both education systems (Canada and Nigeria) are good but they emphasise different aspects. Canada emphasises critical thinking and kids are encouraged to question everyone from a young age and apply concepts to the real world. Canada is transitioning from being an extractive economy to a knowledge economy driven by innovation. So what? It affects the school system in very subtle ways that may be unsettling. I studied in South Africa and back then academic rigour was the main thing my parents cared about. By year 10 I could fart calculus in my sleep. When I went to the UK for university I had a culture shock. Canada will likely be the same. When they teach a concept, say algebra, kids have to think how they can use it in various settings say in hospitals, to make financial decisions or solve real world problems. There won’t be strong emphasis on cramming concepts like times tables but rather how to use them to in real contexts. Again, I finished high school many years ago so obviously my experience is different from my kids. Almost forgot. The teaching philosophy of a school is also something to look at. Basically, schools use either a direct teaching method where the teacher explains and demonstrates ideas and leads classroom discussion. Or the school may use inquiry based teaching where students are given a more prominent role in their learning for example by developing their own hypotheses and experiments. Recently, some schools use a blend of both teaching methods. Understanding your child’s needs will help you choose the best system that works for them. Please pay attention to this point as it is the most important of all the issues I raised. Google it and learn more about it. Sorry for the long post, education is my passion.
Thank you for this information By the way, your hair is beautiful. Your laughter is infectious😂 You're always on point! Neze nwa, beautiful inside out❤
Catholic schools still uphold moral principles and God's principles as well that is why even non Catholics still send their children there. I was once a teacher in a catholic school in Calgary though I am not a catholic but I was impressed by their standard when I was there and that paved way for us to tell the kids more about God.
I think expenses depend on province, my child attends a catholic school here in Ontario, I never incurred expenses. All stationaries, school bus, chrome book, book bag et al were all provided for free. No tuition fee either. The only thing I bought was indoor shoe, every other things were provided including winter jacket
Wow! Everything is provided for. This is the difference between Western countries and Africa that we always talk about. Honestly in Africa everything is a struggle….God have mercy on us🙏🏾
Yes atleast the one my child attends. They really welcomed him well with lots of clothing self and cookies, guess because we were new immigrants then. Plus we are not catholics @@ChidinmaEluwa-u3e
@@mashrohingya9397why are you so quick to throw shades at Africa Neze is also abroad and incurring costs too. watch the video, fees, transport, feeding and supplies are not free there too.
Kindergarten in our province is full school day. School supplies are also not supplied in public schools. No school fees in public school. School busses also free in public schools. School lunches are paid for except if you are on income support.
Neze you remind me. I am not Catholic but I went to Catholic schools because I love the discipline and the curriculum. When I tell you when I graduated college was easy for me. The distinct learning agendas were so inline academically with what I was trying to achieve. I’m not Catholic and sometimes I squint my eyes at the church 😂😂😂 but that’s all churches but the education is top notch. My son will be doing the same. I am in the states
Hi Neze, hope you are settling in well. I am in South Africa 🇿🇦 and my son will be going to a catholic school when he goes to grade 4. He is currently in grade 2. I am not catholic myself however I prefer the way things are done in a catholic school. I think children there are taught excellent values and morals (from my perspective and preference ). With us they get to do 3 languages,so it's English, IsiZulu (an indigenous south african nguni language) and French/Italian (you choose) . It is rather expensive but the private school he goes to now is no different (it's just not a church school). So I feel it depends on what you want your child to be exposed to that ultimately determines the kind of education you provide your child (and of course your affordability)
Also the Canadian system sounds a lot like the South African private school system. All that you said I can definitely relate to. Better facilities, different sports,we also have smaller classes with a teacher and sometimes an assistant teacher. I also prefer the school lunch system (we pay for it termly though). However it should be noted I am referring to the private school system and NOT the government system (that one is a story for another day 😔)
Neze. Thanks for the video. I guess it is based on your province. In Ontario for catholic elementary the child must provide a catholic baptismal certificate to be admitted. It is only at secondary school level that any child irrespective of religion can attend a catholic secondary.
I wish you say the actual cost for thing or estimate of each thing you mentioned; example school fee, food, bus. So we could have an idea. But I’m still watching.
I'm currently on this table. Thanks for posting. Biko, Neze nwa, my son is presently writing waec in Nigeria, and we will leave right after his exams. Pls, what are his options? What grade would he likely be placed in? He is 16years old. Pls do you have any idea on this?
He has to attain the age of majority which is 18 years of age before tertiary institution. Even though you graduate in Nigeria you must start from the grade you are placed.
Very informative indeed thank you Neze coz kne may never know where life will throw them one day i lofe Canada but because of the weether i am scared i might not survive it with my Asthma condition
Very informative video, thank you. But i am confused, people want to send their childs to catholics but are worry about being taught about "Hail Mary"... really ? What do people expect when they go to Catholics ?
Uuummm you guys in Canada do go through alot of questionnaire forms for school, here in Belgium 🇧🇪 our kids go to school and alot of the schools are Catholic schools, but they also have public schools and you are allowed to choose whichever you prefer for your child and in those public schools, some even gives other religion choices like the kids be taught Islamic studies, am a Muslim, but both my kids went to Catholic schools, they never demand for any special certificate of be a Catholic or be baptised nothing of that sort and they were never forced to study anything about Catholic religion, unless they want to, and we do pay certain things like school books, school locker or school trips, also school food or your kids can take their own food the schools bus are normally free, and i don't know if the kids in Canada receive any children money?Belgium pay kids money from the 6th months of pregnancy, which the child will receive the money till the age of 25,and can still work tax free in holiday time and weekends from 16 years. Hope its the same in Canada 🇨🇦??
Nazelle- please Do not go to Staples- staples is very expensive. Next time - go to Dollar Stores for school supplies. I live in the USA and Staples is outrageous with their prices. My daughter went to the public school and 100 % FREE but Catholic schools are Private school and it is considered Luxury and u Must pay
Hey Neze, perhaps you should have narrowed down the topic to your current Province because in Ontario Elementary, the Catholic School Board wont admit in Elementary any Child with No Catholic background. Any faith can however join High school.
Neze. Your children should go to a pure English school. In most schools all over the world, you hav3 the opportunity to learn languages. If a child goes to a language school school, the children fall back on English language, which means they are behind and restricted in the global stage.

At 16, your focus should be a tertiary institution
He might probably be in grade 10 or 11.
