Love seeing these super realistic enclosures. Looks just like a piece of the woods here in the northeastern US. Keep it up!

What a nice and thoughtful enclosure! Most of the pine snake videos are showing racks or sorts🙄 I was really looking for this, thank you!

That's a big boy! I have a pair of baby northern pines. Looking forward to them growing up and being massive colubrids with great attitudes! (At least the male anyways.)

Also if he is anything like my pines, he will just dig up all the plants and trash them within about 15 minutes.

I know this is a silly question but is the pine straw safe for them? Disregarding their name and all lol, usually pine is toxic to snakes, what makes the pine needles different?

Not silly at all! So what makes pine unsafe is the sap and it's ability to cause respiratory problems. The needles don't have any sap and I dry them for a while just to be in safe side.

The oils tend to be concentrated in the needles and can still pose a threat to your snake.
The key is that not all pine is toxic. Pine bark, as an example, is typically harvested from monterey pine trees which are known to be toxic, but other species like shortleaf pine (which can be found in the northern pine snake's natural habitat) are not toxic.
This is a super important distinction. It's not usually enough for the needles or branches to have dried as oil residue will remain. He is likely having luck with pine specifically because his local species happen to be nontoxic.

It's a floor protector sheet, I cover it in detail on another video called "waterproofing a vivarium'
