I heard this movie existed way back, a time even before the 2023 Mario Movie was announced. I was only curious to see what this movie was after hearing so much about it.
This was such a great anime. Simple, virtuous morals about being a hero and overcoming odds. And in the end, Mario was just happy to help even though he didn't "get the girl." Beautiful in its simplicity, *sniff

I really like this movie. It somehow manages to encapsulate the feel of Mario and the 80's very neatly, and because of that it kinda feels like the most authentic depiction of the franchise. Also, I don't like the ending but I do like how Mario accepts he won't be with Peach, but he's still happy regardless because she's happy. It's a bittersweet moment, and it legit helped me get over a relationship. also bowser is amazing in this Edit: Been on a binge on content based around the Mario movie by Illumination and now I think it's safe to say this is the best Mario adaptation to film based on the characterization alone. I might make a video talking about the three theatrically released Mario films (this one, the Illumination movie and the live action one) when I get around watching the '93 one.

I see a lot of parallels to future Mario Titles here. The purple Toad with the starts resembles Dr. Toadley from M&L:BiS and The Prince from the neighboring kingdom also resembles Prince Peasley from Superstar Saga. Also Toadette makes her appearance years before Double Dash in 2003.
I wish Nintendo would make more tv shows (or movies)! I'd love to see a Nintendo cartoon series focusing on different Nintendo universes every episode!

Despite the disappointing ending, it still holds up decades later, which is why I’m glad I decided to watch this on the day before I saw the Mario Movie by Illumination, which was also epic. I was surprised that Bowser in the 2023 movie is a lot like Bowser in the anime, despite being a lot more menacing and evil.
Palpas I never liked that prince character eversince I saw this for the first time. I mean, Mario and Luigi saved her, not him. Yes he was with them as a dog but he didn't do anything really. Revisiting this anime after like 10 years from when I first seen it, it holds up better than I remember it, still has several “questionable” parts but I think with this “more accurate” translation it makes a lot more sense, who ever did this translation did a good job, unlike the old one I saw which made no sense at all, of course it also helps that I now know a little bit more Japanese than I used to.

I know the feeling I was so happy to actually see a animation for mario and the ending kind of gave a bit of disappointment/sadness/confusion to the ship between mario and peach and part of me is still trying to get over it but my time playing Mario games helps out way that anger for the ending.

Maybe this is one of those instances when the writers of the animation didn't have the knowledge of how the enemies work. Then again it's a cartoon so I guess that logic didn't matter anyway.
But Nintendo did. They people at Nintendo have the authority to greenlight or cancel it, or even to insist to tell the movie's producer "NO NO NO! You are doing it all wrong. That monster can't be defeated like that in the game. This movie is supposed to be an animated version of the game, so you need to get the game mechanics correct in the movie. Now go back and re-make that scene, or will remove your animation company's rights to make this movie. Remember, it's my company Nintendo that owns the rights to the Mario franchise, and we sold you the rights to make this movie, and we can just as easily take those rights away from you.". Nintendo owns the intelectual property that is "Mario", so Nintendo has the authority to control the movie's production, and they also have the responsibility to make sure that the movie is accurate to the game it's based on. Nintendo employees should have not only watched the movie after it was done filming but also kept careful track of the movie's production process, to make sure that there weren't errors like that in its final release.

This was my first time watching this, and I gotta say, it was shockingly great! This is what I want the illumination movie to be like! Not- uh, we don't talk about the other one. But no, seriously, The great mission to rescue Princess Peach was super good. For releasing in such an early time in Mario's history, it appeals to a good chunk of fans! It's not perfect, the ending comes entirely out of left field, but it doesnt make the movie worse, I like to think of it as adding some quirk. A must watch for any Mario fan, young or old.
I remember as a child watching this during the VHS days with no subtitles of course and I absolutely loved it. The restoration was done very well and its funny how many years later I still really love this oldie. To the restoration team "Thank You"!!!!! and same to you #magiblot1 for sharing it.

I KNOW! The only anime Nintendo keeps bankrolling is 'Pokemon'! I know they're probably embarrassed by DIC's 'Mario', and 'Zelda' cartoons, as well as the live action movie, but if 'Pokemon' can keep going on this long, why can't they give the same treatment to Mario, Zelda, or Donkey Kong? It would certainly be refreshing to say the least!

I remember watching the Mario anime movie years ago as a kid, and enjoyed it.
Despite the disappointing ending, it still holds up decades later, which is why I’m glad I decided to watch this on the day before I saw the Mario Movie by Illumination, which was also epic. I was surprised that Bowser in the 2023 movie is a lot like Bowser in the anime, despite being a lot more menacing and evil.

Palpas I never liked that prince character eversince I saw this for the first time. I mean, Mario and Luigi saved her, not him. Yes he was with them as a dog but he didn't do anything really. So that was a dumb move in my opinion. The ending is the "WHAT?! WHAT THE F*CK WAS THAT? THE MARIO BROS. DESERVED THE CREDIT AND PRINCESS NOT HIM!" kind. You know? 😂

Revisiting this anime after like 10 years from when I first seen it, it holds up better than I remember it, still has several “questionable” parts but I think with this “more accurate” translation it makes a lot more sense, who ever did this translation did a good job, unlike the old one I saw which made no sense at all, of course it also helps that I now know a little bit more Japanese than I used to.
Den Film hab ich zwar einmal gesehen, aber manchmal denke ich es wäre cool wenn ich ihm als Kind gesehen hätte. Als Kind habe ich die Serien von Super Mario Bros 3 und Super Mario World gesehen. Ich war als Kind ein krasser Mario Fan, jetzt bisschen wieder seitdem ich diesen Film geguckt habe, das ist ein schöner Film. Ich höre mir gerne das Outro an.

I know the feeling I was so happy to actually see a animation for mario and the ending kind of gave a bit of disappointment/sadness/confusion to the ship between mario and peach and part of me is still trying to get over it but my time playing Mario games helps out way that anger for the ending.

Maybe this is one of those instances when the writers of the animation didn't have the knowledge of how the enemies work. Then again it's a cartoon so I guess that logic didn't matter anyway.
But Nintendo did. They people at Nintendo have the authority to greenlight or cancel it, or even to insist to tell the movie's producer "NO NO NO! You are doing it all wrong. That monster can't be defeated like that in the game. This movie is supposed to be an animated version of the game, so you need to get the game mechanics correct in the movie. Now go back and re-make that scene, or will remove your animation company's rights to make this movie. Remember, it's my company Nintendo that owns the rights to the Mario franchise, and we sold you the rights to make this movie, and we can just as easily take those rights away from you.".
Nintendo owns the intelectual property that is "Mario", so Nintendo has the authority to control the movie's production, and they also have the responsibility to make sure that the movie is accurate to the game it's based on. Nintendo employees should have not only watched the movie after it was done filming but also kept careful track of the movie's production process, to make sure that there weren't errors like that in its final release.

Okay I was surprised to see this was at least 82% game accurate. This was just funny and kinda cool. It makes sense for once and isn’t like the Movie or Super Show. Best interpretation of Mario on the big screen until 2022. I love it.

This was my first time watching this, and I gotta say, it was shockingly great! This is what I want the illumination movie to be like! Not- uh, we don't talk about the other one. But no, seriously, The great mission to rescue Princess Peach was super good. For releasing in such an early time in Mario's history, it appeals to a good chunk of fans! It's not perfect, the ending comes entirely out of left field, but it doesnt make the movie worse, I like to think of it as adding some quirk. A must watch for any Mario fan, young or old.
I will watch the hoskins leguzamo Mario movie any time over something like turtles 3 .

Why hasn't Nintendo done more of this? I'd love a Super Mario anime. A Legend of Zelda anime. A Metroid anime. HECK, even a Ice Climbers anime.
I KNOW! The only anime Nintendo keeps bankrolling is 'Pokemon'! I know they're probably embarrassed by DIC's 'Mario', and 'Zelda' cartoons, as well as the live action movie, but if 'Pokemon' can keep going on this long, why can't they give the same treatment to Mario, Zelda, or Donkey Kong? It would certainly be refreshing to say the least!
