Websites are greatly struggling as well, you cannot compete with publishers when it comes to youtubers. My old website, they went from biggest in the country down to being beaten by two websites who have volunteers as review writers. Steam Reviews and Content creators have beaten not only quality and quantity on the industry, they've become more reliable because you have choice. Game websites have become a choir.
But is it a genderless rock ? Does the rock really comes from China or was part of the japanese island that detached from china mainland million years ago, making it cultural appropriation ? You have to ask these questions before playing the game, it is very important. Otherwise you are a fascist. Fact !
@@octavianpopescu4776he’s talking about forcing it where there’s no context where it’s needed. Arguing against it isn’t the same. If I said “wow black panther was good there’s just not enough Asians in it. It needs more Asians.” Everyone is gonna dogpile me for such a retarded take injecting diversity where it’s not needed. Take Dune for example. The OG movies had the natives depicted similarly to the Atreides who are from a completely different planet. It makes sense for the native population of a desert planet subjected to constant sunlight to contain more melanin in their skin in the new movies and so the castings are perfect. But playing an eastern game specifically referencing eastern myth and legend the need for diversity and inclusion hinders what the developers/writers are trying to convey with their setting in the first place. Theres no room for diversity and inclusivity when the inspiration for a game is region based. This should be a textbook example of journos dismissing an entire culture over their own belief.

In every iteration of journey to the west there's always male and FEMALE demon, yes even demons only know 2 genders, heck the spider demon always portrayed as female, even guanyin bodhisattva is portrayed as female, so no what they mean there's no female characters in game ?
A fun little context. The first known full length version of Journey to the West was published in 1592. The first permananent settlement in America by British Settlers (Jamestown) was established by 1607.
As a woman that plays video games, you ABSOLUTELY can play and love a game without female representation being in it. Some of my favorite games are The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, and God of War, all which have MALE protagonists. I have never once felt disheartened at seeing a man as the playable character. It is the heart of the story and experience that matters, not the gender of the character experiencing it.
As a woman too, I can 100% confirm that’s true! Not a single sex, race, gender and more NEEDS proper representation in EVERY video game. (Witcher 3 is a fucking fantastic game, great taste!)
I'm still steaming that they changed Snow White to be this Hispanic girl... it's upsetting because if you say that, people misconstrue your intent and call you a r4cist or big0t. When I'm not saying I don't like the Hispanic culture, I don't like the fact that an already established story of this white woman has to be changed because of all this diversity, inclusion crap being spewed everywhere. I feel like it doesn't do the Hispanic culture any favors either, seemingly implemented as a "These people are inferior, let's give them a leg up and put them in this _higher_ pedestal." and _that_ doesn't feel genuine. I feel like it's more r4cist to change her _because_ Snow White was white. If she had been any other color, they prob would've kept her the same. People in Sweden, Iceland, Denmark don't get to have their heritage celebrated, since anyone white in fiction is being changed to placate the DEI movement? Same thing for Ariel; the man wrote it to celebrate the Danish with his titular character explicitly stated as being a fair-skinned redhead. The reverse applies as well. I would be mad if they tried to rewrite Moana as some light-skinned Aussie in the outback. Excuse my rant. Just wanted to share.

I’m not black, I think “some” media and games are basically creating stereotypes about black people, and some of the stereotypes aren’t positive after all.
HR is always the first part of a company to fall to woke hires. Companies want to hire women for the optics so they hire them and shove them into HR where they can't do any damage (so they think), then once in HR, they make sure only the applications of fellow wokies make it to the hiring managers.
five chinese media reviews are gamersky:10 3dm:10 gamecore:10 erbing:9.5 a9vg:9 They mentioned that almost the only shortcoming of this game is that the map guidance is not good and you often get lost. In other aspects, it is top-notch. Several shortcomings evaluated by Western media, including optimization and bug issues, seem to come from the non-Chinese version, which should be easily resolved before release. Some people say that the story is difficult to understand, which is really outrageous. When we Chinese players play God of War, The Witcher, and Red Dead Redemption, if we don’t understand the story background, we are very willing to look up information. In the twenty-first century, a normal person should have a certain understanding of the world. As a Chinese, I have read Greek mythology, The Lord of the Rings, the original novels of The Wizard, Harry Potter, and You have read the story of King Arthur, and even read The Divine Comedy and the Bible. So as a Westerner, isn’t it your own ignorance that you haven’t read Journey to the West? It can actually be a point deduction. As for the political correctness shit, I won’t mention it.
Poor choice of words, my friend. Calling someone ignorant for not having read a specific literary work, lol. Also, the Chinese gaming outlets giving it 10 are rating Wu Kong above titles such as Elden Ring, Sekiro, Monster Hunter, and even Bauldur's Gate 3 (at least gamersky). I'm not saying Wu Kong is or won't be amazing but I'm inclined to believe they are adding at least 0.5 or more points simply because it is Chinese-made. And why is the story being difficult to understand outrageous? Some stories ARE more difficult to understand than others, especially across cultures... Are there ways to eventually find out more and understand it? Yes, of course there are. But that doesn't make the story inherently easier to understand.
If they are not big on reading, there are movies out there they could watch that would give similar understanding, which is how I got my knowledge of journey to the west (that and some doraemon episodes), these "journalists" are such a joke

However, according to some media reviews, the game's story is weak and difficult to understand, which is one of the factors that deducted points. But all the Chinese media have given praise to the story of this game, describing it as magnificent and extremely interesting. Just as a player, I hope that these media that have profoundly affected us can be more fair.
It's the part that they're asking for gender instead of the usual racial diversity that makes their racism clear to me. Clearly that change can't be because it's based on asian culture, or they wouldn't be asking for more women either, only one scenario left.
I disagree. There’s a lot of diverse and inclusive games, shows, movies, etc. that are great, and I don’t see why those would hurt the quality of them. I think the big problem is when it is used as a main marketing tool as if it is somehow impressive or makes the product worth buying or engaging with. Like I don’t see why having a game with a diverse cast would harm the quality of the game, but I also don’t think it makes it more worth my money. It’s too often used as an excuse to sell shit and to hate on genuinely good and fun media. I love old Overwatch, the new Fallout show, Into the Spiderverse and more which are all very diverse and inclusive, but that’s just a nice cherry on top of a pile of already amazing and entertaining games, shows and movies. TLDR inclusivity and diversity isn’t the problem and doesn’t hurt games. It’s the way game devs and journalists use it as an excuse to make and promote terrible media and insult good media.

The game takes place after Journey to the West. Players assume the role of a monkey character, who is highly likely to be Sun Wukong's second soul, an external incarnation, or a manifestation of his inner demon. Sun Wukong, also known as the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, the Traveler, and the Victorious Fighting Buddha, is a character in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. In pursuit of immortality, Sun Wukong traveled across the seas to learn from Patriarch Subhuti. There, he received the name 'Sun Wukong' and mastered advanced magical skills such as the Great Immortal Technique, the Seventy-Two Transformations(The origin of the transformation in the game), and the Somersault Cloud. Upon setting out, Sun Wukong initially lacked a weapon but later acquired the Ruyi Jingu Bang (a magic staff that freely retracts in the game and is usually kept tucked behind his ear), the Phoenix Feather Cap, the Golden Armor, and the Lotus Silk Boots from the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas. He later caused chaos in the Underworld after, one day while drunk, beings from the Underworld came to claim his soul. To avoid this, he broke into the Underworld and altered the Book of Life and Death by erasing his own name, which recorded those destined to die, thereby creating turmoil He alarmed Heaven, prompting the Jade Emperor to summon him and appoint him as the Keeper of Horses. Unhappy with his lowly position, Sun Wukong returned to Flower-Fruit Mountain, defeated the Heavenly King Li and the Third Prince Nezha, and forced the Jade Emperor to promote him to the title of Great Sage Equal to Heaven. He was given a residence in the Heavenly Palace and tasked with managing the Peaches of Immortality Garden. By stealing and eating peaches from the Peaches of Immortality Garden and disrupting the Queen Mother of the West's Peach Banquet, and then sneaking and consuming the Elixir of Immortality from the Supreme Lord Laozi's gourd ( have gourd in the game), he transformed into a body of indestructible gold(There are presentations in the game) After being captured, he was roasted in the Supreme Lord Laozi's Eight-Trigrams Furnace, which gave him the ability to see with fiery eyes(This ability is not currently seen in the game) Despite facing hundreds of thousands of celestial troops, the Four Heavenly Kings, and the Twenty-Eight Constellations, he could not be defeated. Eventually, after losing a bet with the Buddha, he was trapped under the Five Elements Mountain, where he repented. he caused further chaos in Heaven. Despite facing hundreds of thousands of celestial troops, the Four Heavenly Kings(Appears at the end of the PV), and the Twenty-Eight Constellations, he could not be defeated. Eventually, after losing a bet with the Buddha, he was trapped under the Five Elements Mountain, where he repented. After more than five hundred years, guided by the Bodhisattva Guanyin, he was rescued by Tang Seng, who gave him the title "Traveler" and tasked him with protecting him on the journey to the West. Sun Wukong battled demons and monsters(9*9 81 difficulties), endured countless hardships, and successfully obtained the sacred scriptures, eventually achieving enlightenment and being honored as the Victorious Fighting Buddha. After an unknown number of years, when demons were rampant and Buddhism and Taoism had declined, a monkey appeared, marking the start of the game.

entertainment and, if I'm going to be honest, a game getting a bad review by a mainstream journo company is more often than not a greenlight that the game is pretty good or at the very least primarily concerns itself with gameplay over secondary features like identity politics. It's sort of like a "damn, kotaku is complaining about this game I never heard of, it could be pretty good ill look into it" kind of deal
Once again, I feel I must mention that in the original myth Guanyin, who is Goddess of Mercy and highly respected by the Bureaucracy of Heaven, is an important part of the story, making multiple appearances, I have to imagine she has a role in the game somewhere. As for diversity, come on man, its a Chinese legend about a monkey made of stone becoming immortal and escorting a priest, 85% of the characters are either gods, spirits, dragons, or some kind of demon that looks like an anthropomorphic animal. All of this is subject to what parts of the myth this game actually covers of course, from what I have seen it seems we don't actually play as Wukong himself, but those are some wild conclusions for just playing the first two chapters, even before you consider the type of world the story takes place in.
These -journalists- activists are just mad the main character isn't some overweight pansexual transgender with green hair screaming about the 'patriarchy' or 'toxic masculinity' in every cutscene. It's completely ridiculous and western gaming outlets should just all go bankrupt already because they are completely worthless. Just a bunch of deranged millenials and Gen-Z who are completely clueless yet somehow think their ideology matters. I'm definitely going to get this game, just like I bought Hogwarts Legacy because I like Harry Potter and because I hate all those social media rejects hating on the author over things she never said.
"It's important to mention the controversies surrounding the game's studio" Ah, yes, the controversies that were made up by game journalists because the devs refused to be extorted by a company that wanted to ruin their game.
I wouldn't say so. I think most people that listen in to this sort of drama rarely go to the actual website and learn about it secondhand via non-journo media i.e. yt videos, so they don't actually make a ton of revenue off of controversy.

They mentioned that almost the only shortcoming of this game is that the map guidance is not good and you often get lost.

I disagree. There’s a lot of diverse and inclusive games, shows, movies, etc. that are great, and I don’t see why those would hurt the quality of them. Yeah, and you know she wouldn't be complaining about a lack of diversity if every character was a woman.
If she really want to see a "good diversity" wukong related show she would want to watch the lego monkey kid series🤦

To avoid this, he broke into the Underworld and altered the Book of Life and Death by erasing his own name, which recorded those destined to die, thereby creating turmoil
He alarmed Heaven, prompting the Jade Emperor to summon him and appoint him as the Keeper of Horses.
By stealing and eating peaches from the Peaches of Immortality Garden and disrupting the Queen Mother of the West's Peach Banquet, and then sneaking and consuming the Elixir of Immortality from the Supreme Lord Laozi's gourd ( have gourd in the game), he transformed into a body of indestructible gold(There are presentations in the game)
After being captured, he was roasted in the Supreme Lord Laozi's Eight-Trigrams Furnace, which gave him the ability to see with fiery eyes(This ability is not currently seen in the game)
Despite facing hundreds of thousands of celestial troops, the Four Heavenly Kings, and the Twenty-Eight Constellations, he could not be defeated.
It's a game about Chinese mythology, it has existed for millennia way before the therm DEI.
uh not quite, journey to the west is like 400 years old. i get what you mean though.
Dao and Buddhahood mythology is though, thousands years old, but I get what you're saying.@@GrassSaint33

"This character needs to have more of an urban vibe, so we included an equippable pack of Newports."
well...but some would say it's racist if make the monkey black... we can't make everyone happy.
That would be hilarious.
Believe me, I hate them more than enough, I haven't visited any mainstream gaming website in at least a decade.
This reminds me of Cyberpunk where there was a race that was being put within a stereotype
There was a large group of people that were not of that race IRL complaining about that happening
BUT
the people that were part of that race IRL were absolutely loving how it was represented and giving all kinds of praise
As far as I know, 40% of the content in the game is hidden, and it needs to be solved through puzzles or monster drawings, which is why some media reporters say that there are not many monsters

"Great diversity in items and mechanics"
"Gameplay gets repetitive"
Can you freaking pick one? Never mind that you can say "repetitive" about literally every game.
the negative points besides inclusivity are extremely general/vague, likely because journo had little to say about the actual game. Many of them have 0 passion for gaming so it wouldn't be surprising if it's just some bullshit they made up to pad out the con section lol
Credit to that game reviewer for being open and honest about their fake reviews. I knew screen rant was going down the drain but when their honest trailers was used to defend the acolyte and make fun of star wars fans, that was the last straw. I hope they enjoy chapter 11
Honest Trailers hasn't been relevant in over a decade. Who tf still watches them?
I dropped Honest Trailers after that mid tier trailer for the OG Crash Bandicoot trilogy.
I hate how some people say gameplay is repetitive. Well no shit what in life isn't, everything after a while becomes repetitive
I dont think they dont deserve to be called game journalists. They're not real gamers.

Tbh, I wouldn't want to be labeled as a "real gamer". I just want to play games & not be linked into some BS labels & political dramas
Diversity should never be an arguement
Remember that people didn't see Lara Croft as a strong female lead in Tomb Rider reboot but rather annoyed by how sadistic Crystal Dynamic treats the modern Lara, that's just how journalist completely missing the point of a female lead in a video game.
When you has to deal with an esg score as a dev, you can't win.
“No female characters”
LMAO THEY INCLUDED THE SPIDER SISTERS AND THE FOX
“You underestimate my power!” -Anakin Skywalker
This is where the fun begins
"Lacking in inclusivity and diversity "
Count me in!
I might get this game just to support it.
Why do we care about gaming journalism to begin with?
I mean we don’t
it’s good entertainment because of how outlandish and out of touch they are
Devs and publishers hold journalists reviews higher than non-professionals. It’s very unfortunate.
Cause we are annoyed at them
entertainment and, if I'm going to be honest, a game getting a bad review by a mainstream journo company is more often than not a greenlight that the game is pretty good or at the very least primarily concerns itself with gameplay over secondary features like identity politics. It's sort of like a "damn, kotaku is complaining about this game I never heard of, it could be pretty good ill look into it" kind of deal
Lack of DEI is actually a Pro
Once again, I feel I must mention that in the original myth Guanyin, who is Goddess of Mercy and highly respected by the Bureaucracy of Heaven, is an important part of the story, making multiple appearances, I have to imagine she has a role in the game somewhere.
As for diversity, come on man, its a Chinese legend about a monkey made of stone becoming immortal and escorting a priest, 85% of the characters are either gods, spirits, dragons, or some kind of demon that looks like an anthropomorphic animal.
All of this is subject to what parts of the myth this game actually covers of course, from what I have seen it seems we don't actually play as Wukong himself, but those are some wild conclusions for just playing the first two chapters, even before you consider the type of world the story takes place in.
bro small correction amaterasu is japanese goddess not chinese
Isn't amaterasu Japanese???
@@devawizard3790 You right, i'm dumb, I meant Guanyin, my bad
She’s also a competent female character when almost every time Wukong get stuck, he asked for her help.
Screen "rant" really living up to their name huh
"It's important to mention the controversies surrounding the game's studio"
Ah, yes, the controversies that were made up by game journalists because the devs refused to be extorted by a company that wanted to ruin their game.
"great diveristy and items mechanic" and "gameplay become repetitive over time" is wild.
the pros add cons contradict themselve
Imagine lowering the score for DIVERSITY, holy western journalists
Can’t wait to give this game a 5*.
Diversity is when you add a African American trans girlboss to your game

“Always King Kong. Never Queen Kwong.”

@@barahngit works, but slowly
I wouldn't say so. I think most people that listen in to this sort of drama rarely go to the actual website and learn about it secondhand via non-journo media i.e. yt videos, so they don't actually make a ton of revenue off of controversy.
