I have used this ink for sketching quite a long time (used up more than a whole bottle) and I really liked it because it dries very fast and is really black. The only problem I had with it is that when it's dry it's shiney, not matte. I you look at it (especially if you covered a bigger area with it) at an angle it reflects the light, which I didn't like in my sketchbooks.
Now I switched to de atramentis archival ink. It's a bit of a warmer black (brown/reddish) but it dries even quicker and is completely matte. It's also just as waterproof. I don't see myself switching back any time soon.

    • @hurfsome
      @hurfsome 5 років тому +1

@Yasmine S. it's not as obvious but at an angle you can still see that it's a bit shiney. It's not that big of an issue. It just bothered me a bit.
Imo it's a compromise. You give up the really deep black of the Platinum ink for an even quicker drying time and a matte finish.

From experience with a few "waterproof" inks, I think some of the movement you see on some papers are due to the dissolving of surface sizing, where some ink remains on top of the gelatine size. More absorbent paper the ink bonds fully into the fibres and exibits less movement. Cellulose papers do tend to be more highly sized.

After the frustration of trying many different inks, this is my favorite so far for watercolor drawings. It's quite black and dries quickly.

JFYI, Platinum is selling the Ink cleaning chemical for remove the solid carbon particle from your pen when you left for very very long time without using it.
I love this ink so much but at first I was worried to damage my nice pen by using this ink, even the writing result is quite beautiful.
But now I know that there is a way to dissolve the carbon by the product from Platinum themselves!

I’ve been using noodlers and de atramentis and am completely satisfied with those inks :-)) noodlers takes longer to dry , since I’m using it in watercolor journals , so that can be a bit frustrating at times, but de atramentis has been fabulous discovery for me.. no issues at all with the de atramentis ( document inks)

On Stillman & Birn Beta paper, the De Atramentis Document ink in an EF fountain pen is almost grey, however, the ink doesn't feather at all and the ink flow is great. My problem with the Carbon ink, which is much blacker on this paper, is that it feathers on this paper.

I switched from noodlers to Carbon. In my experience, especially on Moleskine, carbon is superior with respect to waterproof qualities. For urban sketching when you want it dry quick there is just no contest. Try the same test with noodles side by side and I think the noodlers would run. Noodlers is very fine ink all the same.

I just ordered another bottle this morning. I lost all of my art supplies in the Camp Fire that destroyed Paradise. I have tried several “waterproof” inks and this is the best I’ve found. I use it in my Pilot Metropolitan (with EF nip) with my Moleskine sketchbook. I have never had any bleeding issues except with cheap paper. Very much worth the price. And sometimes Copics don’t like it, but that may be a paper issue also. Good video.

This reply comes quite late, but Pilot metro F and this Platinum ink is the combo I’m planning to buy. I want to use them on 120gsm paper for writing journal. Do you think they’ll work well?

    • @nearzero1555
      @nearzero1555 Рік тому +1

@@14xiyang I would say so. It has become my go to fountain pen ink. The only issues I’ve had is the paper seems to determine how water proof it is. Also if you should leave it in a pen for more then two weeks you will need to disassemble the pen and clean it. Hope that helps.

My expectations about permanent ink for fountain pen at first completely all about perfections, which is completely fast dry, no such an issue ink feathering or bleeding on paper, and cheap that don’t cause too much penny. But, i make research and some studies, and watch this video, and now im realise to particularly needed for me to test out any permanent ink and paper overall for my project. Luckily i stumbled here for moments till end. Thank you😁 for sharing this.

I bought some of this as my first ever bottle of ink when I got the Moonman fountain pen (Fine nib) that you reviewed a while ago. So far, I am very pleased with the ink and the pen. I've used it with a "normal" cheap sketchpad (not intended for watercolour), just doodling, and there's no feathering. I just tried it on a Jackson's watercolour pad (actually made by Kunst & Papier), 35% cotton (hot press?) and no feathering there either.

I don’t have any problem with this ink! I use this ink for my Stillman & Birn Alpha Series sketchbook, and sketchbooks made of watercolor paper that is made in China called Baohong. The Baohong paper is 100% cotton and 300gsm. It is quite cheap in China, but it performs really really well! I really recommend you trying this paper if you can get it in Singapore!

It's also bleachproof. My daily driver for writing and drawing. Good for very fine nibs, because it has some substances to make it more fluid (it also has a lower surface tension) it thickens the lines a bit.

I think the reason it seems to feather is due to the excess ink that goes on when you use the dip pen. Feathering always increases with a broad nib and large amounts of ink. A finer nib will decrease the feathering.

@@timothy790110 In regards to feathering, of course paper plays a bit part in it but the ink itself also affects this. For instance, some ink formulations are thicker or have additives that impede spreading on paper.
I have personally witnessed the difference in feathering caused purely by a change in inks (same paper, same pen, same nib), so I beg to disagree with the "not the ink" part of your statement.

@@timothy790110 I feel like we are not on the same page, are we even arguing about the same point??
My original comment: I appreciate this ink as it does not feather on me
Your reply: are you dumb, the ink does shit all, it's all about the paper
My reply: no. ink ALSO impacts feathering (hence, my appreciation for this ink in terms of its performance with feathering is reasonable)
Your reply: yeah but paper is MORE important for feathering
Firstly, you are moving the goal post of the argument. Why.
Secondly, did I at any point say that paper does jack and ink is king for feathering? No. I merely said that ink can make it worse or better, and that THIS PARTICULAR INK (which was the whole focus of this review video we are commenting under???) happens to do okay for feathering (hence my original comment???).

It looks like on the papers where you get feathering, it dries completely waterproof, on the ones without, the water ends up a little dirty. I've used this for urban sketching, where you typically want your colours a bit muted, it's fine, if you wanted super-vibrant colours though it might be an issue.

If anyone is looking for other options, that reliably dry waterproof on most papers within minutes I use Pebeo india ink (encre de chine) with dip pens, or Rohrer & Klingner sketchINK with fountain and technical pens. The R&K SketchInks also come in a wide variety of colors and are all lightfast, I use them with watercolors all the time :)

    • @thismonthindub

Agreed, Pebeo chinese ink is really good for waterproofness. I suspect there is acrylic or some other type of polymer binder in there, because it turns to a rubbery kneadable substance when it dries on the bottle.

I think it's because of the cellulose content in the canson and Strathmore that caused the feathering. Also neither of those papers are sized like arches. Pretty sure sized, 100% cotton paper should be fine for that

I think you should have cleaned the G-nib, now you probably had transfer from whatever ink had dried on the nib to the carbon ink. But then again, I have found it feathers on a lot of papers yeah. It’s only good in pens that give off very thin lines or very limited ink flow, like the platinum carbon pen or the kuratake brush pens that can also take the carbon ink cartridges.

I have been following your course with great interest. I am using a fountain pen to draw with and want to add watercolor to finish the sketches as you have illustrated. I am using Heart of Darkness ink but can not find a watercolor paper that works with the ink. The ink is not waterproof on all of the watercolor papers I have tried !
After some research, I find that the ink is waterproof on plain copy paper; but that paper is too thin and wrinkles up when watercolor is applied.
Would you please let me know the correct combination of fountain pen ink and drawing paper so the dark ink lines do not run and the paper holds it's shape and doesn't wrinkle after the watercolor is applied?
