Platinum Carbon Black is my goto for line and wash with watercolor. I have a black TWSBI Eco dedicated to this ink and had never problems with cleaning it out or it drying in the pen.
I am very appreciative of the detailed examination of this ink. Being left handed as are you, my concern is dry times. Perhaps I am still somewhat hesitant that I may smudge the ink while writing.
Yea, I can confirm your experiences. Reliable and great flow in a variety of nibs. I was turned on to it by UA-cam artist “Peter Draws” a few years ago. Your video is great!!!! 🖌🖋👍🙋🏼♀️🥰
Thank you! I also recommend three other waterproof inks for artists: Noodler’s Lexington Gray (very well-behaved and good in dilutions too; dark enough for writing and can be used in a waterbrush, transparent and can be layered); DeAtramentis Document Brown, and DeAtramentis Document Dark Red. The DeAtramentis Document inks, unlike Noodler’s inks, have to be completely dry before they are waterproof. The Lexington Gray, especially, is a workhorse for me. I prefer it to black. Another waterproof fountain pen ink I enjoy is a very dark interesting purple, Noodler’s La Reine Mauve. It spreads just a bit, so it might not be good on all papers. I still enjoy its archival status and its beauty. Some people have reported some spreading in Lexington Gray but others have not seen this in their tests. I have not had this issue with Lexington Gray.
Curious if you’ve tried De Atramentis Document Black or Sailor Kiwa Guro? I’m trying to decide between the three for a lot of writing as well as a bit of drawing. I’m leaning towards the Carbon black or Document black. I might just have to order samples of all three if I can and see what is going to work best for me. I’ll be using them in fine and extra fine and possibly soft fine nibs in Pilot Custom 743’s.
Hi.. I wouldn't bet my house on this, but I do recall reading some places that the De Atramentis Document inks tend to bleed on a lot of non-premium paper. Do let us know if you got around buying the samples and testing them. Cheers!
@@iodboi I ended up getting bottles of De Atramentis Doc. in both black and red. Have not tried them yet but when I do I’ll try and remember to come back and give some feedback.
Thank you SO much for such a detailed review! Does anyone know the dry time for different papers of this ink? I want a solid black for work but that means that I can't be waiting 60 secs for it to dry.
@@theoffstageme I'm new to fountain pens. Just bought a Sailor FUDE and am researching what ink will be best for drawing. My local art shop here in Sydney doesn't have either brands. Your channels really good mate. I subscribed. Cheers.
This is my absolute favorite black ink. I will rebuy over and over and over again.

I used the carbon black cartridges in a Platinum desk pen. Worked perfectly with watercolours.
I've had this ink in a TWSBI ECO with an extrafine nib for a month with no problems. This is the second ink I ever bought.

i love the look of this black. what in your opinion would be the best alternitive to put in a vac filler? are any of the noodlers black vac safe?
Favorite for artwork ever.
I’ve always thought about getting some but never have. I guess because it gets upstaged by showier colorful inks.
Superb review!
Have you tried Lamy Obsidian? It has a shiny finish. Is this anything like the surface of the Carbon Black?
I have tried it. It’s no where near as dark or as water resistant as Platinum. But there is a bit of a shine on the surface from memory
Have you tried DeAtramentis Document Black it is also very permanent check it out :)
Nice video. Good information. RS. Canada
Thank you!
Have you done a review of SketchINK Black?
Not yet. I haven’t looked at any of the SketchInks yet
