For thick CA glue, I just grab the packs of Gel Superglue at the Dollar Tree. You get three small tubes of the stuff, and it works fine, and lasts unopened for a long time (well over a year!)
Little tip from me. Where I live they have a product called invisable gloves. It's a hand cream used to keep dirt and grime out of the pores of ones hands when painting or doing mechanical work and such. It will surely keep the CA glue from sticking ones fingers together as well..
Great out take. Classic. I almost always glue my fingers to something when I’m using CA glue. Had to cut off my fingerprint onto some baseboard. The fast cap debonder is key.
Or you can just buy a bag of pre-cut shims wherever you get lumber, like everyone I've ever seen install a door uses. Then rather than sawing, you score them with a utility knife and snap them. And rather than CA, you drive a couple of nails through it. A little CA can be a trick if you're having trouble with alignment or something, but not part of a permanent repair.
Always make sure you have de-activator handy when using CA glue. I’ve seen my mother-in-law glue her fingers together and my brother smacked a piece of wood he was glueing and the CA squirt onto his eyelid. De-activator will break the bond for at least several seconds allowing you to get free.
I've gotten CA glue in my eye before as well. It's annoying but won't harm anything, just scratch your eyelid. It falls off over time. I wouldn't use a debonder on your eye though!
Nice I’ve got CA glue and activator now. Retired carpenter I did that many times but no CA just wood glue and couple nails. I didn’t have to do any filler or finish that was painters job, now it’s all my job👍
As an old school carpenter joiner you would be better off nailing those together through the door jamb. Btw, those are called folding wedges and have been used for wood joints etc for thousands of years. Thanks for the video.
I'm a dangerous DIYer and I appreciate your videos very much. Your finger sticking to the glue bottle at the end is very relatable😂 PS your second link to the cheaper version sent me to a saw blade Edit - me not verifying Voice to Text translation. Tends to bite me a lot. On the upside I'm learning to enunciate my words properly
I got into the habit, whenever I needed to use liberal amounts of CA (more than a couple drops)… open up the CA release solvent first, before ever touching the glue. 😂
I've done this on a new jamb install before installing the stop and make sure they'll be covered. I've also had to do this to re-straighten a jamb that was originally installed with too few nails and in those cases I just countersink the screw heads and put them where they'll be hidden when the door is closed. I've filled and painted over or used painted screws depending on how much the final look matters.
ok , my comment is a question, the initial view of the trim showed a "frayed" base at the door jam. I have a number of these and would prefer a repair over replacing all the door jams. Care to make a video , share a link on how you did the repair to this door frame?
@3:10 CA glues suck with shear force. Next time, try rotating the bottle off of your finger. Also, while watching I was thinking to myself "he's gonna glue his fingers...." :)
I use one of those dense foam pads, they have them sometimes in the garden section or with the tools. For a stool I always sit in my makita vacuum when possible.
I could have used brads, but then how don’t make a cool video about this shim trick? Plus with the glue that thing is 17X stronger than measly Brad nails!
I'd say that if you're really concerned about the final position of the jamb, especially if you just spent time repairing it, this would be the way to go. You always have the concern of the pressure being a little too high and pulling it in too far. Or a little too low and having the head of the nail sticking out and then having to, carefully, set the nail. Also, in this case the framing was a little farther back on the one side and you could easily rack the jam one way or the other if you're not exactly centered. Overall, I'd say this is a handy tip and not one I would have thought of on my own.
No doubt- but also making your own shims and using ca glue with activator opens the doors to a lot of other cool use cases. If you’re installing a door it’s cedar shims nailed or stapled on.
