      Yeah... that’s how platforms are- maybe some people cant use stairs, when I use Amtrak, there is a gap from the platform and the train, so the conductors place a very strong ramp to place for people to walk over

    • @PostcardCathy
      @PostcardCathy 3 роки тому

      And you expect a wheelchair bound para or quadriplegic to suddenly be able to get up and climb the stairs?

    • @teeceedeecee
      @teeceedeecee 2 роки тому +2

      That hand cranked platform is generally for people who are unable to climb the stairs from low level platforms (level boarding platforms interfere with track loading gauge and are therefore not supported by the freight railroads that own the tracks on most of Amtrak's network). Many Amtrak stations are only served 1-2x/day, some even less than that and some are even unattended; the number of ADA boardings is fairly minimal, and they could need to board through any door for various reasons; so the lift has to be something that doesn't require batteries or electricity (who charges it at an unattended station?) and needs to be light enough to be quickly grabbed and moved to the specific door where it's needed - so the hand crank approach makes sense despite its downsides.

      With these regional trains Amtrak uses more coaches or baggage cars in place of a coach to provide a sufficient number of axels to engage signals and crossing gates. That coach is probably never, ever used. In the hey days of passenger trains before Amtrak passenger trains had a dozen or more mail cars providing the sufficient number of axels. Keep in mind Amtrak wasn't created until the railroad operating on the northeast corridor went bankrupt because the USPS terminated the railroads mail contracts. The USPS chose to fly the mail long distances and truck the mail short distances more than fifty years ago. Simply put, mail can fly across America in hours compared to a similar number of days by train.

    • @adamm2837
      @adamm2837 6 років тому +8

      Many Amtrak trains in the Midwest and western United States use Superliner bi-level equipment, which have doors located on the lower level of the cars and they would be far below high-level platforms, so that's one of the reasons this platform is so low.
      Other places that use strictly single level equipment, such as the Amfleet coaches used in the video, its just cost-prohibitive, or there isn't enough patronage, etc.
      High-level platforms are more common in the Northeastern United States, especially on the Northeast Corridor, which runs between Boston and Washington, D.C.

      The platform height is because Amtrak is mostly hosted by frieght railroads who mandate that the higher the platform the further it has to be away from the track.
      Only in areas where Amtrak or commuter agencies like NJ Transit or LIRR have dedicated tracks for high level platforms and the equipment needs it (like the Acela or subways and ELs)
      North America has the largest frieght cars in the world and they need a certain clearance.

      In large cities the platforms are large enough for the entire train. In rural America small towns their depots have small platforms, you board where the conductor and porters are. With the long distance trains the conductor like to group passengers in a coach by the stop you are getting off at. Those getting off on the first night are in different coaches than those getting off the second night. Doing this allows passengers to sleep better at least in one of the coaches...

    • @teeceedeecee
      @teeceedeecee 2 роки тому +2

      Adding to what's been said (a long time ago), on long distance trains (this isn't one of them), the passengers are often assigned a seat at intermediate stations so the car attendants can keep track of where people are going and what their status is if they end up in the diner or lounge car. It's also a fare enforcement mechanism: once we know seat 29 is going to city A, we then make sure seat 29 is empty at that city and that they aren't shorting the company. This can't really be done if boarding is a free-for-all. Furthermore, because most of Amtrak's network is owned by freight railroads, they can't have level boarding at most stations because level platforms reduce the loading gauge of freight trains; this means an employee is on hand at stations to assist with safe boarding via stools and the cars' built in but manually operated step traps. The stairs on Amfleets fold down and are not supported underneath so they're not necessarily that stable, they're still a foot off the ground when extended, the doorways and vestibules are narrow, and so it's a good idea that that low platform boarding process is a supervised activity.

    Why is the train not level with the platform?

    • @RailyardProductions
      @RailyardProductions  5 років тому +4

      Amtrak operates equipment with three different floor heights. East coast services are based on high floor equipment, while the rest of the country is planned for low floor equipment, due to existing routes and equipment types, or the use of freight rights of way. Over time, it is likely that level boarding standards will be significantly enhanced through improvements to the fleet, with ramps, lifts, or extensions operating from the rail car, rather than manual lift equipment being provided at the platform. Passenger Train Floor Height
      Depending on which type of Amtrak equipment is used, or will be used, at a station, platform height is preferred to be either 48 inches or 15 inches above the top of rail (ATR) to be consistent with the floor height within the train. Talgo equipment, as presently used on the Cascades service, has a 24 inch floor height, but are equipped with a carborne wheelchair lift, permitting use of a 15 inch ATR platform to effectively achieve level boarding. In some instances, passenger trains with different floor heights may use a station; in these cases, the platform design may combine two segments of different heights.
      Freight Train Clearances
      If freight trains use the track adjacent to the platform, level boarding is only feasible if excessive dimension freight cars (i.e., “high and wide”) are prohibited. If such cars are permitted, the platform would interfere with clearances required for safe passage of these reight cars. In these cases, a maximum platform height of 8 inches ATR is typically used, with portable wheelchair lifts, setback (mini-high) platforms and other means permitted to be employed in lieu of level boarding for accessibility purposes.

    Classic riff-raff. Overweight and traveling with a trash bag after arguing with someone? Those are the type of folks Amtrak unfortunately attracts. This is why I don’t support high-speed rail. I’d rather have more investment in aviation, which except for the budget airlines, filters out the riff-raff.

    Didn't see any fight, in fact, I wish I could get those minutes back.

      The "fight" was 50% off screen - 2 people apparently standing 20 feet apart yelling at each other. The station attendant had time to winch people up and down the handicapped lift - TWICE - and this guy couldn't finish his argument. I suppose the other train passengers are eternally grateful he didn't get on the train and continue the argument at the same volume, via cell phone. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
