Yamaha Grizzly 450 - front brakes service

  • Another workshop task video covering a service on the front brakes of a 2014 Yamaha Grizzly 4x4 ATV. Not a full overhaul, this time the calipers stay on the bike & there is no removal of the pistons - that work is covered on the videos on the Yamaha Viking brakes.
    Here I show you the correct method, as per the Yamaha service manual, on servicing the front calipers. Applying grease, copper paste & thread lock to all the right places & also the things you should be checking for too...
    I have tried to include all relevant torque settings and specifications as and where needed so that this video contains all the information you'll need to perform the task.

    Nice job Andy. My new arctic cat was designed by shoe cobblers im sure of it. Brand new in 2006 and the front caliper fell off the fist 200 km, no Loctite anywhere and the brake system is so primitive compared to that Yamaha. I use thread locker and copper anti seize compound as you do. Cheers

It's been a busy few weeks for me and it's not over yet.....I have another Yamaha Viking coming into the workshop later today for a major service & full brake overhaul amongst other things. It's spent the last 2 years working on a beach so it won't be a pretty sight!

    I have a 2007 450 Grizzly - I can barely turn the hubs using both hands (6'4" 245# man) Brakes have never been serviced as I've only put 50 hours on the atv. I can push the atv freely with my hands to move it in the garage. The brakes I assume are seized. Will I need to bleed the lines too or just maintenance the calipers? Why does this happen on these Yamahas? Thank you for this video - looks like I have some work ahead of me.

    GERAT VIDEO ANDY when you say copper paste is that copper antisize? an please do a video on rear brakes

      Thank You. Yes....it has lots of names around the World...copper anti-sieze is the same.
      There are already quite a few videos covering drum type rear brakes on the channel...take a look in the brakes playlist :-)

    Do use silicone paste on the slide pins? Ive been using that on all my cars and also atv’s.

      Hmm....I'll give that a try as the copper paste does tend to dry out over time. Cheers for the tip. Andy

    can you please do a video on the rear brakes (the wet brake system) i have 2 350 irs both with bad rear brake for a long time and cant find anything about ding a full replacement of the plates inside rear brake system ... pleeeaaaassseee

      Excellent that would be great ! and long over due for my grizzlys :-( you look like a guy i need to know haha ! would you happen to know if there is any rear brake kit for the grizzly 350 irs wet brake ? because i haven't got a clue which individual parts to order from partzilla etc ..

    shouldnt you use blue loctite on those bolts? the guy working on them next year might be cussing you a bit :P I also like to pump the piston out a bit and clean up any crud that's built up around them when I change pads cause they'll be pushed back further into the caliper.

      +Scott Tuttle Well spotted though unfortunately I had run out of the less aggressive stuff! The pistons were pretty clean and pushed back in under thumb pressure. The job was very tight in budget and I was just instructed to fit pads, no time allowed for caliper servicing. Sometimes you just have to follow the customers instructions. If I remember correctly I advised that all calipers should be stripped and cleaned at the next service (in a year!) It's always me that does the work on their bikes so I'll no doubt be cursing myself next year!

      Nice vides. I just bought a 2008 grizzly a couple days ago and I've been going over everything top to bottom. Its always nice to have a reference for something new. Just changed the oil today and the owners manual doesnt even mention taking out the strainer bolt which seemed strange to me and got on here and found your videos for more details.
