- In this video of the San Diego Jeep Club Project Build we rip out the entire interior to include the seats, carpet, center console and plastic moldings to make way for adding the LizardSkin Sound Control, Ceramic Insulation and Top Coat. The LizardSkin is going to help quiet the ride significantly and reduce heat inside the rig on those hot desert trail runs.

LizardSkin Sound Control (SC) is a spray-applied automotive sound damping coating that is great for reducing exterior noises and enhancing sound systems. It is an advanced, water-based composition of a high-grade acrylic binder with sound-damping particles.
LizardSkin's Ceramic Thermal Insulation coating is a premium spray-on thermal insulation product for all cars, trucks, street rods, customs or race cars ---wherever heat is a problem. LizardSkin Ceramic Insulation (CI) is an advanced spray on thermal coating that consists of a water-based composition of high-grade acrylic binders with ceramic insulation particles to create a thermal barrier.
With LizardSkin's spray on ceramic thermal auto insulation, heat entering the interior is reduced by 30°F or more, making for a cooler, more comfortable ride. For maximum automotive thermal performance, encapsulate the entire interior and all appropriate exterior surfaces. - Авто та транспорт
This was 6 years ago, and would love to see how the lizard skin has held up. A follow up video, even a short would be awesome!
One note; When mixing, make sure to set the drill to REVERSE. The mixing paddle is designed to flow in a way as to not damage the particles that provide the sound dampening. Setting the drill to REVERSE allows proper, damage free mixing. This info comes straight from LizardSkin.
Can we get and update video? I have an 08 JKU and want to do the lizard skin insulation. How is it holding up and wut kind of difference did it make ?
Ahhh, yea.... update videos, I would have liked to seen it all back together again, AND how well it worked!!
7:51 raw talent
Great Team work. Love the build and can't wait to see each step of the build. Thanks for letting the public see this. Cheers.
It was a great team effort and much needed extra hands! It's going to be an exciting project and fun sharing with everyone! Thanks!
Excellent team work and another great video TR and RT! Kudos to Amy and her pit crew for jumping in to help the first day!
Looking forward to watching the rest of the build.
Thank you! Amy and her pit crew were awesome to have in the shop. It was a long day, but we all had a great time! Thanks!
once again love the family involvement.
Great job on the video. The thing I would have like to see is before and after road test. I’ll keep browsing the videos to see if I may have miss those on your channel. Solid channel Trail Recon!!!
Great video! I really like complete and thorough mods/projects like this.
Thanks! Going to be a very thorough project for sure!
I used LizardSkin tape on my baseball bat in high school, I had no idea that they made this type of stuff. That's pretty neat.
"Lizard Skins" is a different company than "LizardSkin" that produces this insulation. I use their handlebar tape on my bike. Great stuff.
This is a scarily timed video. I was looking for ways to sound dampen my wife's Hyundai and it was down to either Dynamat or Lizardskin. This is really great, dude. Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful! If you are just doing the sound control and not the ceramic insulation and top coat it will be a much shorter process.
I'd just buy her a louder stereo. I'm not putting this much work towards sound deadening a Hyundai. I'd file for divorce.
Another great video. Amy and her pitcrew and what a cool Jeep club you guys all rock ambition and teamwork combined watch out!!
SDJC is an awesome Jeep club for sure!
Jeep should do this at the factory when built!
It would be nice, but the dealer option price would probably be crazy expensive!
Oh yeah, sure, just like the $1,200 they add on for “undercoating” something else that should be included in base price, like the horn, seats, windshield, and frame....
They need to work on their frames rusting out first....
This looks super awesome! Hope it actually reduces road noise! I would love to do something similar but to protect the undercarriage.
Bravo Zulu! Teamwork is key.
Thanks!
Damn! excellent prep job before the spray. Great video!
Lots of prep involved, but for a project like this it essential to ensure you get good coverage and adhesion. Thanks!
Voluntold, ah that word brings back memories. Ain't nothing like some good old fashioned mandatory fun.
LOL! I was kidding of course, Amy and her kids were so excited to be helping with the project.. such good Jeep people!
"Voluntold" goes hand in hand with "If it ain't raining we ain't training" it wasn't raining at all from what we can see in the video, but it shows you guys do have a great team!!!
Getting this on my TJ build. Gonna be the last step of the project. I planned on bedliner, but now I'm aware of lizardskin, so thanks.
Looks awesome can't wait to see it continue to progress
Thanks! I'm excited about what's to come!
prep always takes the longest. cool to see the interior disassembled like that, great hustle!
Prep did take the longest and is probably the most important part to ensure you get good adhesion. Ready to get things put back together!
John, Brad, Amy, Kyle, and Niki, you all did such a GREAT job. Jeep is looking excellent! John G. enjoy your trail trip this weekend.
Thank you for letting us help out on this one! We really enjoy working with everyone and helping with their rigs.
San Diego Jeep Club Amy and the "pit crew" were an invaluable part of this install!
Thank you! Any time you guys need help, just call and you'll have 6 more hands!
Great video, love seeing the kids involved
Thanks! Wheeling for them is a total family affair, so it was fitting to have them all in the shop.
The reason "bed liner floor" got popular in the first place was it's cheap to do. This shit costs more than nice, molded vinyl floors! Wayyyyy more time consuming too. If it was 100 bucks or so, sure, but at that price no freaking way. Great job on the quality install though.
A lot of work looks good. 🇨🇦
Just did this to my jeep lastnight. Debating on doing the hard top as well
Would be interesting to see if Lizard Skin has ever been used to insulate hard tops.
Way to go guys. Great job.
Thank you!
That looks really good. Might try this on my Jeep. I hadn't even heard of lizard skin before this. A lot of guys around here have Line-X or something similar done to their interiors.
I had not either until I went to the BJ Auto Auction and several resto mods had it done. I researched it and thought it would work well with the build. It definitely reduces the road noise and heat coming from the floorboards. The end product is a softer material than the traditional liner, however you can add liner on top of the Lizard Skin product if you want.
Awesome project!
Thanks! Just the beginning, so much more to come.
I just used line x works perfect...plus i can custom mix colors.
thanks for this because i was planning to do this on my 2014 2 door, keep making great videos been here since 200 subs and im excited to see where this channels going :)
Wow, thanks for following the channel for so long, that's awesome! Would be a little less work on a 2 door... less real-estate!
i was planning to just to simply bed liner it, but its nice to see how it should be done properly. time for pricing
austin myers this is different then the traditional bedliner, you do not get the hard/scratch resistant shell, you do get a significant decrease in road noise. I am taking it out to the desert this weekend and looking forward to seeing the hard work results!
How's it holding up after 3 years?
What a good product to use for frames
Great job!! I plan to rip out the carpet and spray raptor liner in my JK interior floor soon, any ideas on how to hide the wiring after the job is done? I haven't seen a complete video on that yet. Thanks Joe
Watching them find five years worth of food and trash under the carpets is the best selling point for doing this. Lizard skin in now in my Amazon shopping cart.
Having a "pit crew" (with a cute Mom) sure helps out when taking on a project that requires lots of labor. Paint work can be a lot more work than people think. That project makes me think about moving to San Diego and joining your club for a chance to win that rig! It's going to be awesome! Can't wait to see the rest of the goodies going in. And great video work as always! Keep it up!
mariodesmo you are welcome to come out anytime and join us on a run! Btw, this rig is a Club Project build and is not being given away.
Darn, I thought it was being raffled off! lol!
I must have been day dreaming when I first learned about the project. Thanks for the invite, I do get down to SD now and then, I have family there in town.
It's great to see a club have so much support from the members. My local club unfortunately, is losing member support and not as active as it once was. I've been thinking about reaching out to other local clubs and see what they're up to this year. Good luck with the project!
About 4:40 is where I usually think "oh, boy! Hope this goes back together". Haha
LOL, thankfully it did with no problems.
JeepSolid lotsa notes! That is the key to a successful rebuilding!
great video!
Thank you!
I’m curious what this cost to have done... $?
I know it's been a while but just curious if you remember how much of the paint you used? Looking to do a 2dr jk and wondering if I can get away with just a single gallon
Clearly not a quick weekend garage project. I'm sure it's great stuff, but I normally have the doors and top off, so something this involved is not worth it to "deaden the sound and heat" imho. Great video never the less, thanks for posting.
Ya, for the work involved I don’t find this worth it. Most of the noise from Jeeps doesn’t come from the bottom shell anyways.
Hey TR, once you guys were finished did you reinstall the body plugs? If so, how did they fit with the added thickness of the floor?
Amazing work guys. Thanks for the video. What do you recommend for undercarriage rustproofing/coating? Rubberized coatings I believe arent too good, any suggestions for long term protection especially in snowy Canada? Thx.
How much material did you end up spraying? Did you need the full 2 gallons of each the Si and Ci or would the 1 gallon buckets be enough to properly coat a JKU? I'd like try and save a couple bucks and not have half used buckets of the material if possible.
Thanks
it says 2 gal covers 45-50 sqft...a 2 door jeep is aprox 38 sq ft
PLEASE please please do a follow-up video. How is it holding up? How good is the in insulation? Can you compare it to and uninsulated Jeep on a summer/winter day? Is it much more quiet that a standard Wrangler?
After you put everything back together how are you managing the wires? That way as you load and unload your rig you’re not chewing up your wiring. I just got an 2018 recon and hate carpet as a whole so looking into options and this is a great tut. I’m really interested in your wiring covering/management/safety.
How did this fare on reducing road noise? I am thinking about taking out all the carpet in my 14 JKU and applying this, but my main concern is road noise. How did it compare to the stock setup? Thanks!
What are some other options to sound proof? I've looked at Herculiner and Flexseal. Anyone have any favorites? Preferably cheaper and not requiring an air compressor
where's the rest of the video? you did half a job, put it back together!
xDDDD
How’s the factory heat insulation holding up after all this time?. Surprised you guys didn’t strip that out as well. I can foresee problems in the future. Great video guys.
Disappointed that y'all didn't include a final video showing the completed install with seats and everything in place. Also would've liked a review of the results. Thanks for the video of the install.
Jody Newell the new seat install is coming up shortly. Keep your eyes peeled for the new video releases! We will be doing reviews of items as we progress. Don't worry, we are going to cover what you want!
Thanks for the reply. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the big reveal. I have been curious about lizardskin vs rhinoliner vs linex for my jeep.
Jody Newell keep in mind that the LiazardSkin is not a replacement for the traditional "bedliner". LizardSkin is meant to reduce the sound and the heat transfer into the cab. In this it has done great so far. The finished product, while it is durable, is still a bit pliable. You can put a traditional bedliner on top of it if you want to harden the surface. Hope that helps.
you should do a video of the done finished put back together episode. to show the difference and how good it works.
New sub 👍
Right on... welcome to the channel!
curious how this turned out, i'll search to see if the part two 'results' video is out, i wanted to do something like this as i am a quiet freak, after you sprayed, it dried, i would have loved to see dynamite applied. as well bet that would be amazing once the interior is already apart... natch you'd have to have a place to leave it till it totally dries cures. i think jeep should have that spray from factory or at least an option
Her jeep would be great for a rig walk around!
And awesome video!
She is warming up to the idea!
Any update on how the Lizard skin performed in terms of both sound and thermal insulation?
I know this might be a dumb question but I’m new to the Jeep world. But can you reinstall the carpet after you apply the LizardSkin coating? I like the sound deadening/heat protection but I prefer to have the carpet.
I know it's been forever since this came out. But, it's not difficult to remove the shifter knobs from wranglers. It's just pulling upward as you are twisting it left & right continuously. It'll pop right off quick.
Great video... I love all of your insightful videos. Do you think the sound control is worth it if you topless most of the time? I have a TJ with no carpet and I’m either topless or bikini top 100% of the time. I’m going to use the CI for the heat and I’m just wondering if it’s worth the extra $200 to sound deaden as well. Thanks guys!
Would it work well on the underside of the Jeep rather than in the cap?
I do all my own work to my tj but man you will never catch me doing this. It looks like a huge PITA! Great work though it looks great! I don't agree with the PRP seats but it's not my Jeep haha :P
Benny O'connor it was a lot of work, no doubt about that. It was also great to have friends willing to help out! It was a great feeling putting on the topcoat and seeing the finished product.
DIY is always best, but for this project you having some extra time and a few pair of hands is essential.
Any long term update on how this held up?
You guys should invest in a good breaker bar!
I’m debating whether to remove the sound proof material off the body of the Jeep or keeping it. I’ve noticed it’s quite hidden in this video once the bed-liner was applied.
I would have loved to have seen highway and off-road video before and after of the sound difference.
Well how'd it work? Before and after Db testing would be ideal. That's a ton of work if it only makes a small difference. I think most of the noise and heat comes in through the top and windows.
Any idea how to remove the rear inside plastic panels? The panels on each side of the tail gate. Some Jeeps have a sub woofer in that area but mine does not.
I am curious about the road test
After it is all back together did it cut down on road noise compared to just the carpet?
Been looking at this compared to BEDRUG. How has it held up?
When removing the tape, i see that it doesnt peel like it does with paint. I assume a razor is needed to get a good crisp line?
Anywhere by Chicago I could do this to my jeep? Thanks
Any updates on he jeep ? And did you guys do the hard top?
Can you spray this stuff inside car doors without affecting the window or door operation?
how many gallons did you guys need of both the ceramic and sound control?
how much did it take to cover the floor?
So did you put the carpet back in? So all this to quiet down a Jeep?
Hey Brad, do you know anyone that has tried the coatings sprayed on the interior of hard tops ? This could be a allot better solution than the foam stick em pieces.
Been debating this. Over the past couple years, did you find anything out?
Nice video, but a before and after decibel reading would have attracted a lot more interest in the product, especially if it works well.
Did you do a before and after sound check with meter?
After watching them take the seat out, I definitely think you need to talk to other "Jeeping" people and find an engineer and see if you can design seats that are easy to remove and insert. I had a Ford Aerostar van and the back seats were easy to remove. So the actual design is there and all that is needed is for it to be adapted to the Jeep. Now get to it sailor!
I've been looking for a review of this! I wanted to tr this out, maybe I will now that I've seen your video! I never realized how much stuff you really have to remove...
Is there a big benefit of this over doing a bed-liner application?
Bedliner and Lizardskin are 2 separate products. The lizardskin is a softer product, which makes it soak up the heat and the sound better. They say you can add bedliner over top of it for a more durable surface. I have left it as is and have not had any issues so far. Hope this helps!
05:51 thumbs up man :D
Also did you do the inside of the doors
hopefully another video on how well the product works with sound reduction?
Absolutely, once we get all the new seats installed we'll be sure to report back.
Jeffrey Samples I can tell you already that the sound control is living up to its expectation. Just me closing the doors I can hear a difference in the cab. I'm taking it out to the desert this weekend so looking forward to a quieter and cooler ride!
Is there a follow up video to this one?
how about a before and after sound measure ? It looks like a lot of work and expense for suppliers benifit
I've wanted to do either this or dynamat for a while now in my XJ. How tough is this stuff? Like if I didn't put the carpeting back in. Would it stand up to wear and tear of shoes and cargo?
This stuff seems very tough, a nice hard durrable shell. We are not planning on putting the carpet back in, just some rubber floor mats.
Se7enAte keep in mind this is not the traditional "bedliner" and as you can see in the video it does have some flexibility so I would tend to believe that the durability would not be the same as traditional bedliner. You do get improvements with a much quieter and cooler cab, which you would not get from bedliner. I hope that makes sense.
I understand that. Could I spray bedliner over lizard skin?
Se7enAte I checked their site and that specific Q&A: We do not recommend the use of LizardSkin Ceramic Insulation or Sound Control as a bed liner. Although the products are very tough and durable, they are not designed to withstand the rigors that bedliner materials are subject to. Bed liners materials CAN be applied over the top of LizardSkin. Please call for further details. Four-wheel and off-road enthusiasts have used the product on floorboards, but it is recommended to apply a Urethane topcoat to enhance durability.
I think a lot of noise comes from the top not the bottom. Why would you not sound deaden the hard top?
Has anyone ever applied this to the inside of thier hardtop?
Great vid guys! Did you get all of the stock interior trim back in? I watched the seat install and saw some of the wires exposed and didn't know if you left it out for the install or not. I love the idea of this product but would want to retain some of the wire hiding trim pieces in the door thresholds etc.
CMad919 I have yet to put the trim pieces back in since we had been working on the seats and other interior items. I will be getting all of the interior back to factory within the next week or two.
You can hide wiring, if not putting carpet back in, by covering with peel & stick Dynomat type product, before spraying product.
How much cfm of a air compression do you recommend to drive the paint gun?
jak p I'll need to find the card that came with the gun, there was a CFM number that was needed....i checked their FAQ but could not find it listed. If you don't see a response from me soon. Give their customer service a call, they were very helpful and could most likely answer that question quickly
Can this material works on a Bronco
Wonder if this would work on the interior of a top ?
do they make it in a colour match ? to jeep colour
If you really wanted a before and after of the sound dampening why didn't you do a decimal test and before and after of the heat coating it would temperature test before and after
What size compressor did you use?
Can you get this stuff in different colors?
Please do a video on how it holds up
2mm not 20mm? I know it’s a metric imperial conversion thing lol - great videos!
Jason Belch I was gonna say, after adding 20mm I’d be curious to see how everything fits back together. 😂😂😂
