Ass was the third Badfinger album I ever bought. I really didn’t care for it at first but now I like it more than Magic Christian, the 2 post-Ham records and maybe even No Dice. I got Joey Molland to sign my vinyl copy a few years ago and he laughed when I handed it to him and started talking about the cover and the inner sleeve and how it was all Tommy’s idea. I don’t hear any singles on this LP, but Apple Of My Eye is a great song. Actually Icicles could have been a hit single. It’s one of my favorite Molland tracks.
It's definitely more cohesive than Magic Christian which always felt like it was straddling the Iveys and Badfinger eras. You can feel their combined fingerprints all over the songs. Funny to hear Tom was behind the cover - definitely his sense of humor!
Guys: Your continuing commitment to the in depth analysis of Badfinger’s musical catalog is not only ‘Timeless’ but outstanding in every way. While I enjoyed all of their musical releases, I never had so much information about the behind the scenes events through their whole history. Very, very interesting. Great job and always interested to see a new posting from you boys at Vinyl Verdict. Thanks!
Thank you for following along! We appreciate all their work too, but it's been particularly fascinating to shed light on the lesser-known parts of the story and dive into a bit of research ourselves.
ass shows what a great global hit songwriter Joey molland truely is ive had the pleasure of writing many songs with Tommy Evans Mike gibbons and Joey molland all 3 great songwriters thanks guys for all of the great work you do on badfinger
Ass isn't quite as fully realized as Straight Up or Wish You Were Here, but "Timeless" & "Icicles" are two mind-blowing great tracks that lift the recordings up to make it one of their better albums. Maybe, Allen Klein or someone at Apple decided the original recordings of the Ass album needed added depth or something.
The songwriting was still very strong but they did seem to have production challenges compared to the other albums. Given everything happening at Apple at the time, it's not hard to imagine why...
I'm surprised Apple didn't promote it just a little more with an E.P. release let radio DJ's pick - Apple Of My Eye, The Winner, When I Say, Blind Owl or switch out a song put on Get Away...
Even the "Apple Of My Eye" single was really lagging the album release. Love the idea of a sampler like this that provides a taste of each member's songwriting style.
Brave you! You are correct. Never should have been the album opener. Yes, it's a pretty melody, yes the lyrics ( in context) are clever. But this ditty quickly wears off. More popular in America (touring)

Joey delivered some exceptional tracks. Impossible to imagine this album without them

Apple of my eye is a bit dull compared to the other songs on it
Always thought of "Apple Of My Eye", "When I Say", and "I Can Love You" as each band member contributing a sentimental ballad.

They should have opened with constitution
