The Vinyl Verdict
Приєднався 4 лип 2023
Everyone and their mother has a UA-cam channel these days so why should my dad and I be left out? We're hopping on the bandwagon and using this channel to dive into our dusty vinyl collection, uncovering musical oddities, and putting the "like father like son" adage to the ultimate test.
"I've Been Waiting" Badfinger / Iveys Guitar Cover
Another first on UA-cam and I think I learned the reason why. On November 7th, 1968, a 21-year old Pete Ham didn't hold back on this final track for The Iveys' "Maybe Tomorrow" LP. This is based off the extended version released as a bonus track on the Magic Christian Music remaster. I played my guitar parts in reversed channels to make the parts more clear.

In this video, we'll be reviewing Iveys' album "Maybe Tomorrow," released in select countries in 1969 but not officially in the US/UK until decades later. This album serves as a prequel to all the Badfinger albums we've covered and offers a unique blend of psychedelic rock and pop sounds. 0:00 - Intro 2:47 - "See-Saw Granpa" 3:42 - "Beautiful and Blue" 5:08 - "Dear Angie" 5:30 - "Think About Th...

Had to do a more in-depth cover to capture that amount of detail that Pete adds at the end here.

Debut Joey Molland songwriting credit on Badfinger's "No Dice" album. Although the title bears a resemblance to another famous song, this is totally original and rocks hard.

Can it get more hipster than this in the Badfinger world? The Vinyl Verdict takes a spin of a souvenir that Jacob recently brought back from Argentina.

Sharing my guitar cover of "Crimson Ship" by Badfinger, a beautiful and underrated song from their 1969 album Magic Christian Music and written by Tom, Mike and Pete. In this rendition I've incorporated some of the bass line as well.

"Midnight Sun" Badfinger Cover
Переглядів 246Місяць тому
Check out my cover of 'Midnight Sun' from Badfinger's 1970 Magic Christian Music album. Written by Pete Ham, this song was murder to try to sing in the original key (which is oddly half a semitone flat). I found there was a soulful groove in the writing that infected every instrument. Originally intended to be sung by Ron Griffiths, Pete stepped in after Ron fell ill with chicken pox and delive...

Join us as we travel back in time to 1970 to review "Magic Christian Music", the debut album under the Badfinger name. "Meanwhile Back At The Ranch / Should I Smoke" Badfinger Guitar Cover
Not familiar with the song myself but watching the ‘three jacobs’ shredding it was pretty damn cool! 👍🏻😎
As a Badfinger / Iveys fan I never heard this song until it was released in the early 1990s with those non-Beatle Apple releases on the Iveys LP that wasn't released in the USA or the UK. Thought the song was fantastic and wondered why it didn't carry over to the first Badfinger LP (Magic Christian Music) as a handful of tracks did. Watching your video gives a wonderful appreciation for how difficult these guitar parts were. I also have to say you must have a terrific ear for picking up all the chords and leads. Really enjoyed this! A+++++
That guitar is so sick! Can't imagine having to change strings on a floating bridge though.
Fortunately, I have a fantastic roadie who takes care of those kinds of things 🙂
Another great job. I'm not a guitar player, but it is great to see you demonstrate how Pete (and Joey on others) may have played some of these songs. Just my observation on this great song, there is a part that maybe Frampton used later (not intentionally) on Do You Feel Like I Do (when coming out of his solo toward the end)??
Thank you that's the goal! Since there aren't any videos of the members playing most of these parts, doing my best to try to reverse engineer and represent what they were playing and make them come alive. Interesting on the Frampton observation - I'll have to check that out!
Hey, nice cover!! Can you guys do "When I say" please
Oh we'd love to but those will be some tough guitar parts to recreate. Stay tuned!
I had this single with Daddy’s a Millionaire on the flip side, wish I could find it.
As far as I know the track listing on the Maybe Tomorrow album was put together by Apple Records from assorted recordings they had lying around. I don't think they guys themselves had much say in selecting the songs. If this is true that might explain why this material was omitted from their touring repertoire. .
That would make a lot of sense! I wonder which other tracks almost made the cut.
@@TheVinylVerdict Great question.
Gentlemen: your insight to the history of Badfinger is so interesting and informative. Appreciate your continuing commitment to the vinyl verdict: thank you! 🙏🏻😎
I have 2 different pressings of that album. Neither are on Apple. Both are bootleg
Seems like the market is oversaturated with bootlegs. All the more reason there would be a huge market for a remastered/remixed vinyl
@@TheVinylVerdict yeah when I got recently apparently came out of Russia and the other one I’ve had since I was a kid it says Apple on it, but it’s not an apple pressing
It's a great video review Jacob and Michael! Sure wish Apple had respectfully re‐issued a Boxset or 'Deluxe package for the short-lived The Iveys album...seeing as they bundled it with 2010 Remaster Magic Christian Music album - The Iveys weren't even given much exposure back in 1969 as the original LP was given UK, Italy, Germany & Japan lukewarm releases. Thank you again Vinyl Verdict for the shared review!
Yes seems like they missed the boat on that remaster but hopefully there will be some comprehensive Iveys release in the future! So much material from that era for Apple to consider
wow I'm really surprised you got this rarity in Argentina, only a very few people know about Badfinger here
I never said it was easy 🤪
A classic album.
Great cover!
Would love more of these!
More in the works! Thanks for the support
More badfinger reviews please!
It's on the way 😉
Thank you again for another awesome cover!
Hey, nice cover, you have the tab? This music is so cool!
Thank you! No tabs currently but open to doing it someday if I can learn how to easily notate it.
Great guitar cover and I love the Epiphone!
Same it really captures the "No Dice" sound with that single pickup!
Jacob shredding it on his own! Great job young man. Love it! You dah man! 👍🏻😎
You guitar slinging muthas! Good guitar work on a classic rock cover! Thanks for posting! 👍🏻😎
Cool, nice job guys! Great tone on those guitars and Michaels vocals sound loud and clear
Guitar work was great. For some reason at least on my iPhone, the vocals just don’t come through.
Thanks! Mixed for speakers so let me know if you hear it better there
You guys are awesome but unfortunately the song is not a Pete ham or tom evans written classic joe mollands songs are not in same league as tom evans mike gibbins and Pete ham written songs
@@BobEvans-s3b The quality of Pete and Tom's songwriting is undeniable, but we also recognize the power of Joey's songs. It's clear that Badfinger appreciated it too since they played this track in their encore for 2+ years.
Fantastic cover!
Great cover, as always. The licks are nailed to a tee!
What is the name of the two guys presenting this?
We're Jacob and Michael! Check out our channel for many more Badfinger discussions
Chris O 'Dell's book backs up Mal's account that all four Beatles were at Pattie Boyd's birthday party and 1970 at friar Park. She was living at Friar Park at times and was their assistant. George wrote the song Miss O'Dell about her when he was waiting for her when she was running late. Funny... George also wrote Blue Jay way when he was waiting for Derek Taylor in San Francisco when Derek was running late. Apparently a bored George was a creative George. Oh... Chris O'Dell states that Paul and Linda, John and Yoko and Ringo and Maureen were at that birthday party for Pattie.
Quite the find to add to your collection. Very cool guys! Awesome 👍🏻
Love that someone is putting Badfinger music out there. Nice cover you guys 👍
Thanks for the support! We're proud to make our little contribution to keeping Badfinger's musical legacy alive!
Super cool. Love me do is great. I wish it ended a little better
An interesting finding! Your mention of the lead guitars reminded me that on "No Matter What", there's a chance Joey played the solo on a lap steel guitar! That's what he said, according to a reliable youtuber named Sam Popkin, who does Beatles and some Badfinger covers.
I've believe that! The tone of the solo is never quite recreated live, even with slide guitar, so would make sense that it's lap steel. Sam did a great job with his instrumental cover.
Great video and such a great EP! "Love Me Do" is my favourite Badfinger song, such a great rocker! I own a Mexican Badfinger EP, which has the "Straight Up" cover with "Without You", "Believe Me", "We're For The Dark" and "Better Days".
"Love Me Do" really lifts you right out of your chair! The Mexican EP sounds like an interesting one - I wonder if it was released retroactively after Nilsson's "Without You" or at the time of the No Dice release since it contains exclusively tracks from that album.
@@TheVinylVerdict It was released in 1972, so most likely was as a result of Nilsson's hit.
@@matthewvinyl Wow yeah according to this site it looks like "Without You" was the last single in both Argentina and Mexico. Nothing from Ass or the Warner Bros albums. www.45cat.com/artist/badfinger/mx
@@TheVinylVerdict That’s very interesting, I wonder why they stopped after “Without You”.
Great addition to your Badfinger collection!
Very cool find guys! Thank you again for cool review today!
Very cool Beatles memorabilia shop! Thanks for the tour Jacob!
Thanks for joining on the virtual tour!
One of my favorite songs from the first album.
What a fun cover, love the blend of acoustic and SG riffs shared in this video short! Thank you Michael and Jacob!!
Best song on the debut.
What a talented young man!
Crisp and clean Jacob - you delivered - as usual. But there is nothing ‘’usual’ about what you do! Exceptional job- Enjoyed it! Kudos to you young man! 👍🏻😉😎
Such a great cover! The inclusion of some bass lines was definitely a good idea! I was on the edge of my seat when I saw that you almost missed the notes! 🙂 Good job!
Thanks - Pete was not a guy who liked to play the same thing twice so makes it a little tricky to remember all the iterations sometimes 😵💫
@@TheVinylVerdict Makes sense. Keep going!
Over some concerns that there might be lawsuits thrown about, a lot of really cool things exist, but have been kept under wraps. When I posted animated (edit: a RealPlayer) video of Tommy's wedding online back in the 1990s, I received some really nasty and threatening correspondence by a member of the popular lineup of Badfinger. Why would anybody want to subject themselves to that?
I can understand how something as personal as a wedding video could be sensitive but at the same time that reaction seems out of proportion. Glad it's finally out on youtube so we can all enjoy it
One of the few songs that founding Badfinger member Ron Griffiths didn't play on. His harmony would have really added to the song. ☹️
I do agree that Ron should've been there, but he was fired before they became Badfinger, according to different sources (a shame).
I just got the exact same guitar! So fun to play
No spoilers!
Another cool video from the team at The Vinyl Verdict...thank you again Jacob, great work on bass and guitar performance
Beautifully played Jacob!
Sweet
Very well played my friend!! I Subscribed, Keep it up!🎸
Hey guys found out videos through my home page as I’m working on a discography review episode on Badfinger. I think it’s great you guys are talking about Badfinger as much as you do. Are either of you on social media? Curious to know.
Thank you and would love to hear your perspective on the Badfinger discography that is so highly underrated. You can reach us at thevinylverdictchannel@gmail.com and we can connect on socials from there.
Adding to comments today there was a song listed in Ass Sessions from Autumn of '72 listed as "Sandcastles" in Dan's book 'Without You' you wonder if there were some other demos from that period...plus Mike didn't return right away so there session drummers filling in for him - not the full Badfinger line-up yet you wonder if a lot rough tracks of the songs exist at all on tape?? The other rumor is Todd engineering the sound mix at Badfinger's 'Carnegie Hall' March 1, 1972 was committed to tapes...it's all speculation so has Todd actually been asked what took place and what became of recordings if it happened!!
YES! I think this remains one of the only unreleased tracks mentioned in the book and I'm sure it would be an interesting listen from those early Ass sessions! A soundboard version of the Carnegie Hall performance would also be a treasure
24:12 That scream from Pete really cuts deep for me. What a sensational album! 👏
