The 1984 softail was pretty significant also. The first to showcase the EVO engine and the hard tail look with the hidden shocks.

As a EVO softail owner, I agree 84 was significant in the softail story as the first year and its exclusion from this video only points to its dominant presence in my upcoming 90’s video!

@@neildewitt2869 AMF was done in 1982. And for all the AMF haters, without them buying the company in 1969, there would be no H-D today. They dumped money into the company. Everyone knows, quality wasn't great by the mid seventies. AMF served a purpose. They put the money into the development of the EVO. Along with engineers from Porsche.

I would almost say the glory days of Harley Davidson are actually now, being that in 1980 Harley Davidson almost went out if business, and it was the 1985 introduction of the Evolution block head motor that saved them. Even in the 1990s it was almost impossible to buy a new H-D being that demand exceeded supply, and everyone had to either buy used, or get on a waiting list, or buy a UJM or (Universal Japanese Motorcycle). So ACTUALLY, looking around today I see far more Harleys on the road than I ever did in the past. I myself when I first started riding in 1994, easily found a 92' GSXR 750 for a first road bike, where as HD there were only run down worn out old club bikes available.

Great video, didn't appreciate the FXRP with the fixed fairing when they first came out. I believe they were wind tunnel tested and didn't fit what I thought a Harley fairing should look like. Most every casting number for the 5 speed bikes of the 80's through 1998 all have a "dash 79" part number on them. On a side note I personally have NEVER seen a 1979 FLT Tour Glide. Apparently, there are a few out there.

Rebuilt it and after a few years got it all fixed back up to where I finally had to hone and go ten over on pistons and a S&S carb. Took electronic ignition off went to points but to get point in Alaska was a pain so finally went back to electronic ignition again. Only big problem was finding a ring gear. It's a press fit and it started spinning on the clutch plate. Finally found one and changed it out. I love that bike. It has everything that it needs. Jump on hit starter switch and go. Check oil put gas in it. Change tires and battery as needed.

And if you are still too petty to understand why Harley Davidson is still king, then you probably also fail to understand why 124 ft lbs of torque is the "performance" a large man riding with his wife on the back is looking for... Dont forget her luggage. And no, your 85 ft lbs of torque BMW 1200GS is not gonna cut it, besides that the crank is parallel not longitudinal placed.

Earlier HDs had such horrible paint jobs. Wavy as the ocean

Paint has improved since then for sure. My 1996 and my 2021 look equal in my opinion

@KennyQuestShow yeah, they started doing a lot better in the 90's albeit they couldn't get the pinstriping to match. I have 2 original paint bikes with messed up pinstripes. One is pink and should be red and the other has the colors flipped on the gas tank. Apparently this was a problem back in the 90's lol

on my 96 there is a "gold" pinstripe, however some reported it to be yellow. Later in the same model year the switched to silver.
