    This video has been clipped slightly as of January 2024 to remove a copyright block claim from [Merlin] in Germany, hence the strange jump in the intro. I wasn't able to establish whether the claim was really legitimate or not (the company have a history of false claims) but this is the easiest solution :)

    Considering you partially call these videos "sleeping aids" (and I have in fact slept with them playing), I'd say that the tag is apt, but also that the quality is still incredibly detailed and on another level. In fact, I'd say you're the Brian Eno of UA-cam gaming videos at this point, making vids that are both meticulously detailed to watch closely and yet calming enough to have in the background. Amazing works as always. Happy Holidays to you MrEdders.

    I have mad respect for indie devs developing a long-running franchises like this - even if the connection is more thematic than narrative.
    I hope Fisher lets people distribute the old games one day, though; game preservation is important and the idea that any game gets lost for eternity is saddening. Perhaps a GOG release with the two as 'unsupported extras' - with a wrapper stating us such.

    • @MrEdders123
      @MrEdders123  Рік тому +4

      Yeah that's what I'd like to see. Although (and I'm purely speculating here) maybe GoG refused to sell the newer LHoD or something. They've made some really weird decisions regarding what indie games they let on their store.

    While I appreciate the nice graphics and storytelling, these adventure games never really "clicked" with me, exactly the reasons you mentioned on this video (pixel hunting, trying everything with everything, etc. kinda outdated game design). There's only one such game which I've been able to complete, Alone in The Dark, and even then it must have taken a few years for us three kids to figure it out, we played it separately on our own and then traded advice at school, sometimes we went together at someone's place and tried to brainstorm it. There was a lot of game on that single floppy back then.

      Unfortunately I wasn't able to find a working link to it, only archives of the pages talking about it on Fisher's old website. I think it was included on older copies of the mail order CD ROM of LHoD 2000 along with a bunch of other Fisher games. From what I could tell it was mostly a proof of concept, not a full-fat game 🙂

    if the graphics are pink and bluegreen then it is CGA . EGA could display 16 colours simultaneously out of 64 total colours and a max resolution of 640x350. VGA was 16 colours simultaneously out of 256 total and came in 640x480, so the gameplay you show doesn't have a ton of colour variety and also seems to come in 640x350 unless you're aftermarket modding that to fullscreen somehow, it's probably EGA, unless it supports 640x480.these games remind me of those Mac games like Shadowgate and Uninvited a lot but they seem more ambitious and slightly improved over those early entries. the DOS ones I mean, they definitely look like products of thei year they were released for each entry.

    • @MrEdders123
      @MrEdders123  Рік тому +1

      Yeah I never found a version of the original LHOD that seemed to be CGA, despite references to it in the shareware ads and in-game text. As far as I can tell there's only EGA variants and the VGA version with different gameplay. 🤔

    • @WildFungus
      @WildFungus Рік тому

      @@MrEdders123 as all the formats were created by IBM the EGA mode could downscale to CGA and VGA to EGA as well: if that was the hardware present. So the mention of it in the shareware ad, without having seen it, I would imagine is just to assure customers they didn't need to upgrade to play it maybe?

    Although happy to see a new video, 3hrs is really long.
    I was about to suggest making the videos shorter or better yet split, in this case maybe an old and new games two video split.

    • @MrEdders123
      @MrEdders123  Рік тому +1

      You're right, and it was definitely a mistake trying to do everything at once. What happened was that I couldn't find enough background material on Romantic Blue, so I thought "eh, I'll cover all of them since they're only shareware games". I didn't realize the reboot games were full-length titles. I definitely could've made a better video on just the DOS games and compared them in more depth to Uninvited and other horror first-person adventures like Personal Nightmare or Elvira. I know not to do something like this again though :P

    • @MrEdders123
      @MrEdders123  Рік тому

      Hmm, looking at the old recordings I appear to be running in VirtualBox (XP), unfortunately I didn't record the process I used to actually install and run it. I distinctly remember downloading a patch of some kind (that was in Russian iirc) but I'm not sure if that was the method I used in the end. I can see it's running about five times too fast (which doesn't really matter in-game other than text vanishing quickly) and I slowed it down a lot for the video.
      Sorry I couldn't be more help. You can also play the browser version (insanely slowly) via Internet Wayback Machine. My personal recommendation is that you play the reboots instead. There's not a whole lot of story to the 2000 version and the gameplay is pretty much identical to other static background point and click games of the era. Fisher himself has disavowed it. 😔

    If I may proffer my opinion, I think that the often heralded 'dead genres' were often never big unit shifters to begin with. Full Throttle moving 1 million units is regarded, even at the time, as being aberrant to the usual sales yields products of its ilk would garner. Flight sims are kinda similar. These genres didn't die because they were outdated so much as they got eclipsed by the financial ballooning of the industry, caused by more profitable games like Halo and a general shift towards console development over PCs at the turn of the millennium.
    That is to say, their financial impact on the video game industry wasn't as big as it might otherwise have seemed in its heyday, but in a small pond, adventure games could be a big fish. And then the pond got bigger and bigger while the fish stayed roughly the same size. It was easy to ignore in amongst a sea of other more marketed material. This analogy ignores a more nuanced take so admittedly it is not perfect :)

    I don't think it's fair to hold early transitiona titlesl in the genre by the standards of today. Softlocking is a real issue and it happened but eventually developers began to prioritize those sorts of bugs, they found better ideas than instant death sto have some interesting things happen because we just had this idea that if you made a mistake, you jumped in a hole in mario you died. And eventually we came up with better ideas. But human beings who make video games came up with those ideas because of games like this. Like the complaints were made at the time and overall the industry listened. And the the most recent point and click genre game to come out and make any serious splash is so good people constantly refer to it as an RPG, I'm talking about Disco Elysium of course. Anyway good overview but like yeah man we all said back in the DOS days I dunno like the industry stopped doing it so complaining about it now seems frivolous.
